Lots of ideas and information.......2007-07-09
I bought this book because a) I love hiking and being outdoors and b) I have two lively dogs that I want to take on day trips with me. This book is part of a series which I had heard great things about from fellow dog owners.
The author gives alot of detail about each trail. They are carefully mapped out and she lists hiking must-have's for humans and dogs alike. The trails are rated by difficulty levels and most of the hikes seem easy-moderate. The photos included are beautiful and really inspire you to get out into nature with your dog! We have already walked a trail that was listed for one of our local parks. I plan on doing many more, in different places, throughout the summer. I think this book is great for all those interested in hiking and bringing your canine companion along for exercise and an enjoyable day away from the city.

This delightful work is the latest in a series of books titled "Best Hikes with Dogs." Other areas previously covered include: Oregon, Colorado, New Jersey, Arizona, North Carolina, Las Vegas, and many more. The author has chosen 55 trails in the New York City, Long Island and Hudson Valley region suitable for canine expeditions. I was pleased to find that two of the hikes were in my town of Yorktown. I was really surprised to see the John Hand Park as one of them. Most Yorktowners have never heard of it or Blinn Road where the trail begins.
The author is careful to select trails that are not too strenuous. For instance, her Hudson Highlands hike keeps to the valley between Mt. Taurus (Bull Hill) and Breakneck Ridge. Undoubtedly, the thousand-foot peaks along the Hudson River would be no problem for Lady, the dog who led me to the summit of Colorado's Mt. Princeton at 14,197 feet. For more difficult routes in this area, I agree with the author's recommendation of the "New York Walk Book."
Each trail is well described along with the history of the area. Directions to the trailheads and parking areas are clear. Maps and altitude cross sections are provided for each hike. The book is filled with photos of the scenery, people, and, of course, happy dogs.

The Essential VT Trail Guide.......2007-08-19
If you could have one (and only one) trail guide for Vermont, I would suggest this one. While there are plenty of references and resources out there for Long Trail hikers, it can sometimes be a bit harder to find (or hear about) mountains and trails that are off the LT. Because this book's focus is on those non-Long Trail hikes and rambles, it fills in the blanks that are left wide open in nearly every other VT hiking guide I've found (be it $35 book, $6 map, or freebie bulletin in a visitor center somewhere). The maps are detailed and easy to follow and the writing is superb.

This book is great, it's so hard to find out about trails in the Las Vegas area (outside of the heavily populated areas). As a bonus, the authors are local and lead hikes every now and then around the valley. The web-site address for the guided hikes is printed in the back of the book.
Hit the trails with your pup!.......2006-03-12
Chewbacca (25 lb pup) and I really enjoyed using the book on the trails! It was nice to know what hiking-obstacles we could expect. The first-aid section for dogs was really great too. If you've got a dog you blaze the trail with... then check this guide out.
I LOVE THIS BOOK.......2006-03-11
Thanks to "Best hikes with dogs Las Vegas and Beyond," I am much more adventurous and take my dog to new trails often. Directions to trails and details of terrain have helped me choose which hikes are best suited for my dog and I. The book takes "guessing" out of the equation. A must have for anyone hiking with or without a dog.
Best Hiking w/ Dogs book EVER!!.......2006-03-11
I love, love, love this book! It is easy to read and all the hikes I've done (with my two dogs in tow) have been great. I would recommend this book to anyone (even if you don't hike with dogs). It is so hard to find a quality hiking book for this area. This is the BEST!
A MUST.......2006-03-10
Whether you are just beginning to venture out or if your are an expert hiker, this book is a MUST for you and your four legged friend, as you begin to explore the desert around Las Vegas. The descriptions of the hikes are enticing and most importantly accurate in terms to difficulty, length and what is needed for preparation before you go. In fact the book provides great information about caring for your dog in the Las Vegas heat and dessert terrain which is asset to anyone with a dog even if you are not a hiker and just plan to stay in the city. However, if you and your "best friend" do plan any hiking or adventure trips this book is a MUST. Lewis and Jacoby-Garret have taken the time and given the attention to detail that will make this book relevant and helpful for hikers in the Las Vegas area for years to come.

This book has an excellent overview of Classical Athens and Greek History. I especially liked the chapters on the different deities that the Greeks worshipped. This book is an excellent overview for those interested in learning more about this formative period in history.

Greek soldiers defeated numerically superior Persian armies in several battles near the beginning of the fifth century b.c. That set the stage for what is known as the Golden Age of Greece, several decades of almost unparalleled accomplishments in art, politics, and civil affairs. The leader during this inspired era was a citizen of Athens named Pericles. He led many important political changes in the city. He was also largely responsible for the development of the Acropolis. Buildings such as the Parthenon still inspire awe and admiration among countless numbers of visitors to the site every year. Pericles was a controversial figure during his life. He often needed all his powers of persuasion to convince his fellow citizens to retain his position as an Athenian leader.
