The Hopes of Snakes: And Other Tales from the Urban Landscape
ASIN: 1580175287 |
Book Description
For more than 30 years Ted Williams has been hailed as one of the foremost nature writers in the United States, with articles and columns that appear in a wide range of national magazines--from Fly Rod & Reel to Audubon. His eloquent advocacy for a host of environmental and wildlife conservation issues have won him prestigious awards. The National Wildlife Federation presented him with their Conservation Achievement Award; his conservation writing won him the Federal Wildlife Officers Association Award; the Outdoor Writers Association of America recognized him with their highest honor, the Jade of Chiefs; and the Coastal Conservation Association of New York named him "Conservationist of the Year."
Wild Moments is a collection of Williams's beautifully crafted seasonal observation columns that is sure to be prized by Ted Williams's fans and to attract a broad new readership. The text is complemented by the illustrations of John Burgoyne, himself the winner of more than 150 awards in the United States and Europe.
Williams explains the weather conditions that bring out the brightest reds in autumn leaves, when to watch for the massive migration of northern flickers, how hungry wolf spiders catch their prey, and why American goldfinches wait until July or August to build a nest and start breeding.
Although Williams's home is in Massachusetts, his columns describe the action of the natural world all across North America, with a few forays to other parts of the globe. So readers will learn why there are so many aspens in Yellowstone National Park and the extent of the burrowing owl's habitat (from southwestern Canada to Argentina).
Written in an inviting, accessible, and entertaining style, these brief columns are packed with in-depth information on a broad range of topics. Anyone who loves the natural world will find this book irresistible.

Wild Moments.......2007-07-15
Wild Moments: Reveling in Nature's Signs, Songs, Cycles, and Curious Creatures is a book that describes the beauty of nature year round. Furthermore, this book challenges the reader to seek out and enjoy nature during every season of the year. For each season, the author describes dozens of animals and plants that he has encountered during that season. Each short description includes interesting behavioural information as well as tips on how to attract, identify, or locate these interesting wild animal and plant species. These descriptions examine both the common and not so the common varieties.
Wild Moments: Reveling in Nature's Signs, Songs, Cycles, and Curious Creatures is an extremely informative book. However, as this work is divided into dozens of short individual description type essays this book reads more like a poetry book. Thus, the reader feels at ease while learning about nature and not overwhelmed by clinical scientific descriptions. Furthermore, as this book covers so many different nature topics, most any reader will easily find his or her favourite topics. Moreover, this book focuses on both animal and plant species that are common worldwide and those that are only found in very specific areas of North America. This unique aspect of the book challenges the reader to look for the species common to his or her area as well as to learn about rarer animals or plants that may be completely new to him or her.
Inviting, lovely nature observations and trivia.......2005-04-06
The essays comprising Ted Williams' Wild Moments are perfect choices for armchair readers who want a thoughtful and informative browse discussing life cycles of plants, animals and birds. Among the topics of discussion are which weather conditions lend to fall foliage, how wolf spiders catch prey, and why American goldfinches build nests out of the usual spring season. Inviting, lovely nature observations and trivia.
Fascinating and Upliftng.......2005-01-15
Those familiar with Ted Williams' Incite column in Audubon magazine, or his
work in other periodicals such as Fly Rod & Reel, know him to be a tough,
unyielding proponent of sound conservation. Woe to the public official
charged with protecting the environment who finds himself in the sights of
Ted's pointed pen after failing to carry out his job, whether by design,
indifference or incompetence.
Ted's writing grabbed me the first time I read his Audubon column "Incite."
Even though I was an immediate fan of his work however, it wasn't until I
read his first book, The Insightful Sportsman, that I discovered the poetic
quality of his writing. His elegant prose is most evident in "Fairy
Diddling." "Fairy Diddling" (fairy diddles being a nickname for flying
squirrels) is an engaging peek into the lives of these capricious little
characters, who don't emerge from their tree cavities until after the sun
has set. The piece concludes with this evocative sentence: "They are out
there now, wherever the globe has whirled into its own shadow, haunting
woods you thought were spiritless, flying between the cold moon and the
earth, jesting to Oberon - and accomplishing the important work of keeping
the night what it was meant to be."
Now comes Wild Moments, a sampling of Ted's Earth Almanac columns gathered
together for publication. While The Insightful Sportsman is largely a
collection of his hard-hitting investigative columns, this new book reflects
the soft side of a man whose passion for the natural world is second only to
a deep love for his family. In the preface he tells us that these short
essays, packed with fascinating but largely unknown facts about birds, fish,
mammals, insects and plants, celebrate the beauty and magic of nature.
The book is divided into four sections - one for each season of the year.
Winter includes an essay on ruddy turnstones. Ruddy turnstones are
shorebirds that flip over shells and pebbles in pursuit of crustaceans
buried in the sand. Although - as birders - my husband and I have watched
these plump little birds for years, we did not know that one will enlist the
aid of another when encountering difficulty upturning a stone.
Spring doesn't simply arrive for Ted, it comes "as the Northern Hemisphere
leans into the sun..." It is the time when wolf spiders creep from their
burrows in search of food and fairy shrimp hatch in vernal pools. It is
also, of course, the time to witness the elaborate courtship dance of the
male American woodcock.
Ted is big on sharing nature with youngsters, and he recommends taking kids
out to pick berries in summer. While we're out there, we might keep an eye
out for the bright yellow garden spider, whose web is spun with a substance
that is stronger than steel. And if we're in the right place we might see a
flock of nighthawks overhead, foraging on the wing.
"The earth is fat in fall," he writes, "dripping milk and honey into the
mouths of wild creatures and into the souls of humans who will soon be
entering their own form of hibernation in front of flickering fires and
flickering screens."
Ted Williams learned about nature in the same way Henry Thoreau did; he
spent as much time as possible immersed in it. His family owns a "camp" (a
New England term for what we in some other parts of the country would call a
summer cottage) in New Hampshire. He spent much of his childhood at this
camp, one of only fourteen on a 280 acre island. Except for the fact that
his grandfather and uncle took him fishing from the time he was four, there
were no naturalist mentors. His connection with wildlife grew out of
singular explorations of the island. From the time he was six years old, he
rose early and set out alone in a rowboat to travel up into the swamps where
he spent long days attending to the lessons of his outdoor classroom.
Even those who subscribe to Audubon magazine and read Earth Almanac
religiously will appreciate this fine collection, and not only because
previously unpublished material is included. Everyone who cares about
conservation will come away, as I did, with a renewed hope that we are
actually winning the battle. That news, as Ted says, "is remarkable and
uplifting."
thank you, ted.......2005-01-03
Ted Williams eloquently describes everything that we love as well as that which we take for granted in the natural world. This book serves as both a reference guide and a collection of daily affirmations that remind us of our exquisite relationship with nature. Thank you, Ted Williams for capturing these wild moments, and for inspiring me to get out and see them for myself.
Wild Diamond Prose .......2004-11-19
One needn't travel to distant worlds to encounter the exotic and astounding. One need only have eyes to see what has been before us all along. Williams is the lens through which we glimse wonders and exquisite beauty still abounding in the often cruelly damaged wild world in which we live. In these brief essays, collected from his Earth Alamnac column in Audubon Magazine, he reveals secrets of the commonplace--creatures and plants we may have glanced at many times without really seeing.
The entries are like prose poems in crystalized language which make one stop again and again and say, ah . . . From the sublime: "sweet pepper bush fills the air with a fragrance that freezes the fleeting hours of August, drugs the droning bee, and transports aging wanderers of the woods to a time when summer never ended and one's only commitments were to fish, frogs, and turtles . . ." to the ridiculous: "tufts of silk protrude from the sun-split pods (of milkweed) like stuffing from puppy ripped pillows. . ." And don't forget the magic: "Since this theory (the ancient belief that circular growths of fungus are set by dancing fairy feet) cannot be disproved, why hasten its extinction when you are afield with young companions?"
If you know an environmentalist, give her this book. It will cheer her darkest hours and energize her crusade. If you know someone who is not an environmentalist, give her this book. It will convert her as surely as a full-immersion baptism. And keep your own copy to read and re-read . . .

The Best of Outside: The First 20 Years
ASIN: 0393323986 |
Book Description
The most hilarious, whimsical outdoor moments captured on film, from twenty-five years of living Outside.
Short of near disaster or the sublime, what are our most memorable outdoor moments made of? The totally surprising, sometimes bizarre oddball moments that catch our psyches off guard and strike our funny bones to the core. Call it the wild side factor.
The editors of Outside proudly present outstanding images gleaned from 300 issues of their back-page "Parting Shots" photo feature. It's their way of celebrating the pratfalls and singular coincidences of an outdoor lifethe comic circumstances of relatively tame mammals (us) spending more and more time closer and closer to large, wild animals. These images are a rare chance to look into the wide world outside and laugh at both ourselves and that infinitely wondrous, entertaining three-ring circus we call the universe. 67 four-color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
Epic laughs ensue.......2005-04-22
This is a collection of photos from the "Parting Shot" page of Outside Magazine. Each of the photos is real, and works with the themes of Outside Magazine. (It's an outdoor adventure magazine. So expect extreme sports, animals, and a quirky look at stuff.)
Even if you never look at Outside Magazine, and even if you'll never think of yourself as an outdoor adventurer, these are wonderful pictures. Visitors grab it and giggle just as they do with our collection of Charles Addams cartoons -- and for much the same reason. These photographs run the gamut from beautiful to frightening to charming, but most are laugh-out-loud funny.
The reprints are a high enough quality that you can count on leaving this book out for years of enjoyment. Bring a smile to your face, and look at this book. Give a smile, and show someone else this book.
Captivating Moments of Beauty and Silliness.......2004-04-30
'The Polar Bear Waltz' is a wonderful book taken from the best of the popular "Parting Shot" feature in 'Outside' magazine, which monthly showcases a wild, wonderful, beautiful, funny, or just plain quirky shot taken by a top rate nature photographer.
The book contains a brief introduction and the remainder is the beautiful photographs, with photography information yet no captions to allow the reader to mentally construct their own. The photos are breathtaking, many involving animals, many human interest shots, or even an occasional landscape. My favorites have to be the 'polar bear waltz' photo by Frans Lanting in Hudson Bay, Canada (p.77), the 'smiling saguaro' by Joe McDonald taken in Arizona (p. 79), the 'north pole' shot by Per Breihagen (pp. 72-73), and the 'whimsical ostrich' shot by Kevin Horan taken in Addington, Oklahoma (p.45). All of the shots in this book are great, but perhaps the most touching is the photo from Mount Elbert, Colorado by Dave Showalter on September 16, 2001 (p.96), surely one of the most inspiring photographs I have ever seen.
This is a beautiful and affordable book of some of the most truly amazing and stunning, sometimes playful, sometimes serious, but always magnificent photographs that I have ever seen. I recommend it to anyone.
mostly human.......2004-01-01
Althou there are some "silly" animal shots, most are humans, especially skier and other atheletes. Don't buy it for the animal lover.
Great pictures, and funny too.......2003-01-03
I bought this book for my brother for Christmas. After he opened it, it went around the whole house and everyone loved the pictures. This is a great coffee table book and one that can be enjoyed over and over.
How to stuff a wild stocking.......2002-11-30
Simply a great gift book for anyone who loves wild places, adventure, the absurdity of life, and a good laugh.

well written arson investigation.......2006-02-04
Presley, Oklahoma firefighter Shelby Fox hears a scream from the nearby home of M.B. Perry. She races over to insure the schoolteacher is okay only to find the woman on fire in her bed with a man watching. The apparent arsonist attacks Shelby.
Police Detective Clay Jessup visits his close friend Shelby at the Presley medical Center where she recovers from her beating, but cannot remember the assault or why she was found unconscious in the home of M.B. by her crewmates working the fire at that house. Shelby plans to find out one way or another what her selected amnesia hides from her. As they follow clues at new arsons that use microwave ovens amongst other devices to set deadly infernos she begins to recall bits of the atrocity she observed and how she became a victim. The arsonist killer wants his only witness dead while Clay wants the woman he loves safe and sound by his side.
Rightfully so, the romance takes a back seat to the well written arson investigation that has the two protagonists seeking a serial killer who in turn is seeking the heroine before she identifies him. The action-packed story line grips the reader from the moment that Shelby intrudes on the horrifying burning of her friend and never slows down through a series of fires until the final confrontation. Though the romantic relationship never heats up, the third Hot Zone thriller (see MELTING POINT and BURNING LOVE) is an exciting tale worth reading.

Writing as it should be........2000-05-06
I read this book in one day. I loved both Rafe and Mary Margaret. What great characters! I especially liked the fact that Meg wasn't a weak, wimpy "take care of me" type who couldn't function because of her rioting hormones. I've read too much of that sort of stuff lately. Want to slap those women up side the head! Mary Margaret and Rafe are fabulous together. Both in and out of bed!
Now that I know there is another book in this series, I'm going to check the library to see if I can read that one.
Wonderful, can't-put-it-down read!.......2000-03-29
This book completely captured my imagination. What a wild, wonderful time I had reading it. Thank you, Naomi Horton. Romance as it should be! :o)
Absolutely loved it........2000-02-12
This was a continuation of her "Wild" books, and although I never got a chance to read the first one I thoroughly enjoyed this one. From the very first page, I was completely captivated by both characters. Naomi Horton really delves into both and makes you truly know them (and root for them every step of the way). I first read her in an anthology and loved her matter-of-fact, witty, and incredibly fun writing style. Unfortunately, none of her other books are in print--hopefully there will be some reprints soon. Anyway, this one definitely does not disappoint.

Book Description
The captivating, real-life images in this celebration of the natural world introduce young children to the diversity of animal habitats around the globe. Some of the world's leading wildlife photographers capture the beauty and tranquility of a koala resting comfortably in an Australian eucalyptus forest, penguin families gathering on the icebergs of Antarctica, and an elf owl peeking out of its nest in a saguaro cactus. The simple prose encourages early readers to connect the colorful photographs with the accompanying text, as they sound out words and describe the animals and their domiciles. Whether they are pictures of general regions such as the savannah or the rainforest, or of specific homes, including a cave and a beehive, the images in this collection show children that all living creatures—both animals and humans—live in special places they call home.
