Outstanding.......2007-05-06
Purchased after a recent seminar showcasing the Pike Place Fish Market, I found this book an outstanding tool to take back to my co-workers. When Fish Fly focuses on the World Famous Pike Place Fish Market and how the owner, John Yokoyama, turned his once failing business into a fun, thriving one. Motivational, inspirational and easy to read. It has proven itself time and again with work and the difficult task of motivating others.
Simply fantastic.......2006-12-29
The book tells a really inspiring story about how it is possible to turn a team, a company around to delivering excellence and beyond.
I've read quite a few management and team building related books, and still mention this one before any other books on the same topic.
- It is a realy honest book
- It is about real people with their real story
- The author shows how he had to change first
- It is a very simple, quick read that will stick.
Thanks
Bart
A Good Read !.......2005-03-23
Author John Yokoyama, owner of Seattle's World Famous Pike Place Fish Market, explains how he changed his attitude toward his employees, embraced a new way of treating people, led his employees in a fundamental directional shift and built a widespread reputation. This isn't a business "cookbook" that tells you step by step what to do. As Yokoyama insists, you can't just copy someone else's success. You must be an individual. However, the story of his turnaround and triumph at World Famous Pike Place Fish Market is a good read that illuminates the need for leaders to treat their employees, as he says, as people, not as human resources. Although the Market is getting to be as overexposed as a fish left out in the sun, we welcome this first person exposition from the owner. After numerous published accounts about the Market, the saga of how Yokoyama empowered employees, promoted his business and changed his style comes through best in his own words.
The original is the best.......2004-11-09
This book cannot be appreciated by those who have not read the original Fish!. Though this book is directly from John Yokoyama, the owner of the world famous Pike Place Fish, it lacks the kind of inspirational and personal touch that made the Fish! philosophy so famous. At best it appears to be a nice opportunity to hear the story of the great place from the owner himself but there is much room for improving the sequencing of topics, the narrative style and in bringing out the true excitement of the place. It appears at many places that too much importance is given to employees' conformity to the vision of becoming world famous and the business is run as a proprietary concern, enforcing the views of the owner on most occasions.
One incident in the book that really moved me - Two fish mongers who fly to Minneapolis to entertain a child who is in hospital diagnosed with leukemia. One of the fish mongers himself had undergone treatment for a tumor and his empathy for this little girl and his own emotions are the at the core of the Fish! philosophy.
The contribution of Jim Bergquist, the consultant who was instrumental in bringing about the transformation at Pike Place Fish is acknowledged, but not fully elaborated.
This book may not fly off the book stands like Fish!.

Love Pike Place Market but the cookbook?.......2007-01-11
Pike Place Market is one of my favorite places to visit. I was excited to get the cookbook and the recipes do sound yummy. However, they also require a lot of work & ingredients that I don't have time to shop for. Maybe someday when I have a lot of time on my hands....
A big book in a gift-size package.......2005-08-23
The Pike Place Market is a destination point for anyone visiting Seattle. The market is a vibrant maze of fish stalls, vegetable vendors, meat purveyors, etc. To local foodies, the market is shopping central, especially for seafood. Tourists love the sense of history, plus the entertaining fishmongers singing and acrobatically tossing whole fish across the counter.
Braiden Rex-Johnson, an expert on the Pike Place Market, captures the essense of the market in this gift-size cookbook. The stunning photographs bring alive the color and commotion of the market, and the exceptional recipes reflect the diversity of Northwest cuisine. Don't miss trying the recipe for Baked Whole Salmon with Vietnamese Dipping Sauce. I made it for a dinner party and it was a dramatic presentation. The Fried Oyster Caesar Salad was another winner, along with the Shellfish Risotto. I'm looking forward to trying many more, whether I'm cooking for the family or entertaining friends.
Easy to use. And a great gift........2005-07-01
I was given this book as a gift and I'm delighted with it. It's sized smaller, like a gift book--so portable and easy to use. I appreciate Rex-Johnson's introduction that focuses and guides consumers on ocean and fish sustainability. This is befitting any bonafide cook from the Northwest (or anywhere!). Besides great recipes, she includes a helpful Appendix of techniques, everything from making bread crumbs to a chiffonade. The book seems basic enough, and sophisticated enough, for a broad range of cooking skills. And the photos and presentation are beautiful, interwoven with historial trivia related to fishing. There's a lot in this little gem.
Great Recipes and Gift Idea.......2000-07-14
This is one of my favorite cookbooks. In addition to truly delicious and different recipes, it includes historical notes about the Pike Place Market - which is one of the oldest fish and farmer markets in the U.S. - interesting facts about finny creatures. bivalves, and crustaceans (did you know that the plastic-like quill inside a squid is the vestige of its primeval molluscan shell?) , and the many people and cultures that make up and sell at the Market. The recipes are a bouillabaisse of cultures too: Thai, Cajun, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Native American, Sephardic, Mediterranean, Mexican - and you will find a number of accompaniments, which perfectly complement the entrees. A great gift (my wife has shared many copies), and a delightful read even if you don't feel like cooking. My only criticism - I wish her husband/architect, Mr. Johnson, had been commissioned for the cover illustration. His drawings that are interspersed with the text add interest and depth to Braiden's fine writing. Also, this book does not replicate her other fine works.

PIKE PLACE MARKET COOKBOOK:
Recipes, Anecdotes and Personalities from
Seattle's Renowned Public Market
By Braiden Rex-Johnson
Foreward by Tom Douglas
Rex-Johnson puts the reader well into the middle of the frenzy and color-filled mealtimes at Pike Market. She readily lines out signature dishes, menu rotations and histories of those sharing the fruits of their wares and labors. She captures the many faces of the Market, which she describes as "Part meat, fish, and produce market; part breathtaking panorama of water, mountains, and sky; part vaudeville show; part arts and crafts extravaganza; and part slice of nitty-gritty street life." Pike Place Market is the most visited landmark in the Pacific Northwest. One cannot buy a ticket to anything like this!
This 96-year-old mecca has a colorful history, and was almost torn down to make way for "urban renewal" in the early 1970s. More recently, Rex-Johnson tells how in 1997, The Market Basket CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program reinvigorated the farmer population and helped save the Market's farm-fresh food resources.
Each of the nine food sections in the cookbook is headed with a handy preview. The Entrée page reflects such diversity as Irish Stew, Zaire Chicken Curry, Korean Beef Bulgogi, Rouladen (Germany), Pancit Bihon and Mechado (the Philippines), and New Mexico Tamales.
These are just some of the stops she makes:
~ Chef Charles Ramseyer, of Ray's Boathouse, shares his simple, yet elegant appetizer, Scallop Terrine, along with chef's tips for perfect preparation.
~ From Sosio's Produce comes Microwave Mozzarella Vegetable Pie. This is a simple, health-filled dish of Japanese eggplants, sweet peppers, onion, spice blend and mozzarella cheese. Mic this in 10 short minutes. Even quicker is their Cheesy Tomatoes, baked in the oven.
~ The simple Pea Pullao from The Souk is a spicy, vegetable-rice dish. The cookbook cross-references this dish with Marketspice's Chicken Masala (page 86) and Café Campagne's Lamb Burgers and Balsamic Onions, Roasted Peppers and Aioli (page 98).
~ A backgrounder on the Pike Place Market Creamery features Nancy Nipples, the proprietress and self-described "Head Milk Maid" of this now-famed institution. Learn about "aracauna" eggs.
~ From Alm Hill Gardens comes another fresh pea dish--Raspberry Snap Peas--made with raspberry vinegar and toasted sesame seeds. The handy Techniques section, page 203, refreshes your memory on toasting seeds and nuts.
~ From Chicken Valley comes an unusual Northwest Chicken Stir-Fry. It contains the usual stir-fry basics plus hazelnuts, spinach and dried cherries, plumped. Meet the owner and learn of the restaurant's background and their take on all feathered-food sources. Rabbits, too.
~ On the bread scene Nancie Brecher, teacher of cuisine to thousands of Seattleites, shares her Fresh Dill Beer Bread, an unusual accompaniment.
~ From Tim's Fine Berries, a recipe combines raspberries, brown sugar, raisins, apricots, citrus juice, zest, onion and toasted almonds for a lip-smacking Red Raspberry Chutney.
~ On the dessert track, find a recipe for Chilled Strawberry Soup from Northwest food expert Sharon Kramis. Guests will enthuse over this berry, banana and pineapple fruited gazpacho.
~ From Mech Apiaries comes a Sour Cream Cranberry Pie, a tart, yet creamy treat.
~ You will feel quite quenched and close to Danny McCullem of Danny's Wonder Freeze, after Rex-Johnson introduces you to his concept. His "Real" New York Egg Cream, is a gem in the heart of Seattle, a simple drink which is a lot method.
The Pike Place Market Cookbook has excellent Appendixes: Techniques, Produce Availability Chart, Mail-order Information and a comprehensive index. Rex-Johnson's book is part cookbook and part intriguing Seattle travelogue.
Delightful read about the Pike Place Market.......2003-06-21
(From Take 5 newsletter)
Braiden Rex-Johnson's revised edition of the Pike Place Market Cookbook is a delightful read about the Market's colorful vendors and includes delicious recipes from shopkeepers, restauranteurs and local chefs. Rex-Johonson's first edition was published in 1992, and a decade-plus later nearly a third of the businesses featured in the original book have changed hands. She describes current vendors from the fishmongers to French bakery, smokehouse to spice shop, berry vendor to brewery. Among her 130 appetizer-to-dessert recipes are 60 new recipes and 70 of the best from her previous book. The Pike Place Market is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike - this book will guide readers to the many tucked-away shops and cafes, and its recipes will prompt a shopping list for the next trip.

Braiden Rex-Johnson's newest offering is her second edition of the best-selling Pike Place Market Cookbook.
Rex-Johnson, a Wine Press Northwest columnist, published the first Cookbook a decade ago, and it's been wildly popular with residents and tourists alike.
Like the first edition, the completely revised version is loaded with recipes by and features on vendors and chefs, and it beautifully captures what a special and magical place the Pike Place Market is in the Pacific Northwest.
If you own the original Cookbook, you'll thoroughly enjoy the revised edition, and if you never picked up the first version, this will become a treasured part of your cookbook collection.

In consultant Cyndi Crother's Catch! the fabled Pike Place Market fishmongers in Seattle explain a shared philosophy of work and life in their own words. The author's work as anthropologist--she interviewed and flung fish with 17 crew members--allows her to translate their inside jokes and shoutouts into habits of mind to "transform ordinary into great." Crother manages to keep Piscean puns to a minimum (stop floundering, how to get off the hook) and skillfully applies the principles of mind-over-matter cognitive psychology. Several phrases are key. "It's all over here," is an expression of personal responsibility and choosing a positive response to create the outcome. "What you say is what get" is a mantra for using choosing your words to change your mind.
These ideas of self-reliance, intention and language as reality are not new. Yet Crother gives them a fresh and practical application in the photos of individual fishmongers and in their words. Whether reading about Jeremy's ordeal of chemotherapy or Bugge's finessing the customer who was showered with ice from a flying fish, readers will find the most animated and instructive stories since Finding Nemo. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
The Pike Place fishmongers are almost as famous as the market they work at, lovingly profiled in the media and treasured by those who watch them go about their work each day with style and smiles. In "Catch!, Cyndi Crother tells their story--or rather, lets them tell it, in this unusual combination of oral biography and business blueprint. Using the fishmongers' examples, letting them explain their work lives and their personal lives, the book explores the issues of goals--both financial and humanitarian--and intention, showing how the crew itself creates these goals in collaboration with management to everyone's satisfaction. "Catch! examines the power of possibility, taking such guiding principles as coaching and acknowledgement that are lacking into many businesses and showing that readers too can be the prime movers in their own experience.

Turns a tedious, dirty job into an adventure........2006-02-02
I don't know about you, but when I think about working in a fish shop, all I can think is; I'll never get that smell off my hands. I was in Seattle about 16 years ago and went to Pike Place Market. I don't remember seeing that particular fish market, but the whole market is pretty cool. This is a fantastic book. The thought of the motley crew of guys pictured in the book getting along and having fun is nothing short of amazing. The shop is proof that you can have fun, learn, and make a lot of money doing just about anything, if certain rules are observed. One of the main secrets of their success is the ability to be taught. So many people, especially after working in the same occupation for a number of years, or reaching a certain age feel like they know it all, and are not willing to try anything new. These employees each essentially 'own' a piece of the business. With ownership it's easier to accept responsibility and get a feeling of success and euphoria. This company also holds biweekly meetings, as well as huddles at the start and end of each day. The stories of each employee as portrayed inspired me, even if they were embellished by the author. The author did an exemplary job writing this book, and I would recommend it to anyone working for themselves or for an employer, after all, we are all working for ourselves anyway.
wow .......2005-03-06
This is one of the most inspiring things I have ever read. The best part was hearing how one of the fishmongers used this 'fish philosophy' in dealing with a brain tumor. His attitude was admirable and all of the guys' stories were so neat. They really seem to live what they speak about. In visiting the market last year I was able to see that they not only have fun, play, make your day, and are 'there' but also have great fish. Check out the book and order some great fresh fish while you are at it from www.pikeplacefish.com
A Good Read!.......2004-06-03
While author Cyndi Crother acknowledges that another wildly successful business book about this fish market preceded her, she has insights to offer based on time she spent with the free-wheeling, fish-throwing denizens of Seattle's World Famous Pike Place Fish. Her book picks up on the spirit of past coverage, but she adds the fishmongers' philosophical ruminations to her own slightly mushy, eclectic New Age managerial wisdom. This is not for strictly business readers, but it will ring a chord with those who seek to balance life and work. It's about warmth, and treating people with sensitivity, and creating your own reality by aligning your thoughts and actions with your intentions. It is also about workplace comradeship, customer service and how to sell the heck out of fish all day long. It's all pretty entertaining, given the lively background of the fish market. We suggest you throw a line in the water; you might just hook something you can really use
Most inspiriational book I have read lately!.......2004-03-06
If this book does not inspire you to come alive and get going with your life, nothing will. And it is not some philosoper's old boring stuff; it is real life from ordinary fish mongers. It is down-to-earth information that is easily read, easily undetstood, and easy to apply to your own life. I plan to reread this little book several times a year to remind me what any person can easily do to become "great."
The whole idea of the Pike Place Fish Market is inspirational. If you have ever been to the market in Seattle, you will be quite inspired and maybe even a happier person right away because if it. The people who work there are inspirational. They are succeeding personally and as part of a team. They are very happy to be working where they are. They have a formula for success that is really working, and working for ordinary people. This is why they sell tons of fish on the Internet. This is why they perform training programs all over the country. This is why they sell so many books and videos and T-shirts.
If you do not check into this source of inspiriation you are losing out. I'm so glad I know about Fish!
From the heart.......2004-01-18
I've read FISH! and all the related books...loved them all. Catch is different; it is written from the point of view of the fishmongers. It has passion -- it comes from the heart.
The fishmonger's vision "to make a difference" comes through loud and clear.
I've added Catch to my FISH! collection and I am recommending it to all my FISH! associates.
Keep up the inspirational work.... you guys are the best!
:)

Inside the Pike Place Market by Braiden Rex-Johnson is as fresh and vibrant as the famed Seattle marketplace itself. The country's oldest continuously operating farmer's market is miraculously captured in two dimensions: its nooks and thoroughfares, its personalities, and the found items that define the essence of Pike Place. With 20 market recipes, vivid photographs, and behind-the-scene tales of fish buyers, street musicians, organic farmers, herbalists, and tattoo artists, Inside the Pike Place Market relates the stories of this bustling urban village as if you were discovering them for yourself.
The book is a hybrid guidebook, photographic essay, narrative, and cookbook--and in this lies its success. Recipes, such as Fusion Flank Steak, Pear Vinaigrette, and Strawberry-Rhubarb Fool, mingle with Paul Sounders's intimate and colorful photographs and Rex-Johnson's succinct vignettes. Together they reveal the rich diversity that infuses the market. Most notably, humanity and tradition live throughout these pages. Meet Louie DeLaurenti, whose family has been in the market since 1928. Survey baby romaine lettuce, vine-ripened tomatoes, Chinese greens, and hot French pastries. Duck into a meatlocker. Listen to Demetrios Moraitis strum his bouzouki. Dodge the low-flying fish, then rendezvous with friends at the brass pig named Rachel. Open this book, and you step into Seattle's soul--and stomach! --Byron Ricks

MARKET SECRETS.......2001-06-02
I READ THIS BOOK BEFORE MY LAST TRIP TO SEATTLE AND DISCOVERED PLACES IN THE MARKET THAT I DID NOT KNOW EXISTED. MY GRANDSON AND I VISITED LOTS OF NOOKS AND CRANNIES IN THE LOWER LEVELS THAT I HAD NOT DISCOVERED ON PREVIOUS VISITS TO THE MARKET. THE MARKET IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES IN SEATTLE. FROM THE FLOWER STALLS TO THE HISTORY OF THIS SEATTLE ICON, THIS BOOK IS A GOLD MINE. IF YOU ARE GOING TO SEATTLE OR JUST TO LIKE TO READ ABOUT INTERESTING PLACES---YOU NEED THIS BOOK!
It was almost as good as being there!!!!!!!.......2001-02-08
The book showed me quite a few of the things I missed on my visit to the Market. I will be making another trip to Seattle in March and have already highlighted the places in the market that I want to see. I have even found places that my six year old grandson will enjoy visiting also. I have fallen in love with Seattle and the Market. My thanks to the authors for allowing me to visit the Market right in my living room in Houston when ever the notion strikes me.
West Coast shopping at it's best!.......1999-12-11
For anyone who has ever visited Seattle's famous Pike Place Market, the book is a joy. It captures the hustle, bustle and charm of the market. Braiden Rex-Johnson has culled stories that make the market come alive in words as well as the wonderful pictures of Paul Souders. The 20 recipes spice up the text and serve to bring home the variety and texture of the market. Congratulations to both Braiden and Paul!
Inside the Pike Place Market.......1999-12-10
Braiden Rex-Johnson has written a foodies delight. Sumptuously decorated with the photographs of Paul Soders, Rex-Johnson's exploration of Pike Place Market is candy for all the senses. This is NOT a cookbook. There are just 20 recipes (all very good). Rather, this is a delightful narrative of the history of the market, the people and products that inhabit it, and the terrific food that emerges from it. Braiden-Rex is deeply in love with her market, and it shows in her wonderful book. When you finish the book, you'll be hungry, but very, very satisfied.
Inside the Pike Place Market.......1999-11-30
I rarely read a food-related book, skimming instead for any nuggets of wisdom, or a select recipe or two. But few such books are as well-written as Braiden Rex-Johnson's "Inside the Pike Place Market." I opened to the first paragraph and just couldn't put it down. Part history, part travelogue, part cookbook, and lavishly illustrated with Paul Souders' photographs, this is indeed a book to savor from beginning to end.
Book Description
In 1907, Seattle’s farmers and shoppers were angry. The former were being cheated by middlemen, the latter objected to the high price of onions. A city experiment to connect the two groups was proposed, and thus was born the Pike Place Market. One hundred years later, the Market still exemplifies the farm-to-table experience. Its nine acres are home to an amazing array of fresh meat, produce, and fish. What's more, there's even marvelous spice shops, fantastic florists, a Shoe Museum, and a hardware store. This is where Starbucks first tested the nutty idea of gourmet coffee and where Sur la Table sold its first stockpot. Officially commemorating the Market’s centennial, this delightful book is packed with fascinating historical images, seasonal shopping lists, and pointers to lesser known spots. It tells the story of the place rightfully known as “The Soul of Seattle,” its quirky, colorful past, and its vibrant presence in today’s sophisticated city.

I Wish I was There!.......2001-06-06
This book does indeed engulf one in the splendors of the Gulf Coast. Sams' photographs transport you to the water. I could feel the spray and sea on my face-better I could smell the salt air and I longed to be there. This is the best gift I've ever given. My gift recipient complained that because it is so pretty, he went through it too fast! I highly recommend this book as one of the foremost coffeetable books in my collection! Jill Bertolet
I Was Engulfed!.......2000-12-07
I ordered my copy of this book direct from David J. Sams and spoke with him on the phone about this book before I bought it. I was familiar with the works of David J. Sams from his photographs in "Flyfishing the Texas Coast: Back Country Flats to Blue Water" by Chuck Scates and Phil H. Brown. As an avid angler fishing the Texas Gulf Coast almost every weekend and a lifetime of traveling the Gulf Coast from Texas to Biloxi Mississippi to Panama City Beach Florida, this book brings back vivid memories of the beauty of the coast. The brillant colors and composition of David's photographs engulf your visual senses creating longings to return to the coast. Photographs of the people, places, and activities of those who reside along the coast bring back memories of some of the more interesting people I have met in my life. The warm, relaxed lifestyle of the Gulf Coast has allowed the creation of a breed of characters not found anywhere else in the US. Whether your passion with the Gulf Coast is fishing, kayaking, sailing, or just sunning yourself, you will find memories captured through the camera lens by David J. Sams. Every picture is bright and vivid. Your dreams will only be limited by your imagination as you view the photos in this book.

Book Description
Throughout much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Ojibway people of Michigan's Bay Mills Indian reservation endured hopeless poverty, cultural repression, and deep racial prejudice. Despite such odds, they have survived as a people and a community through reliance on the bond of kin, the ability to reap and share the abundance of nature, and a strong belief in their identity as a native people.
Drawn from oral accounts of tribal elders, The Place of the Pike tells the history of the Bay Mills community from the perspective of the people themselves, whose own view of the past is not cast in terms of federal Indian policy, academic theories, national economic trends, or the personages of American political life. Instead, the Indians of Bay Mills see their history in the life struggles of their own tribal heroes.
In order to recapture the past, oral storytellers frequently employ visual imagery. These stories, combined with dozens of photographs from the tribe's photographic archives, make the text of The Place of the Pike come alive. This unique history will inform and fascinate a broad readership in Native American and Great Lakes history, community studies, and anthropology.
Charles E. Cleland is Professor of Anthropology, Michigan State University.
