Book Description
Below the soil surface, the rhizosphere is the dynamic interface among plant roots, soil microbes and fauna, and the soil itself, where biological as well as physico-chemical properties differ radically from those of bulk soil.
The Rhizosphere is the first ecologically-focused book that explicitly establishes the links from extraordinarily small-scale processes in the rhizosphere to larger-scale belowground patterns and processes. This book includes chapters that emphasize the effects of rhizosphere biology on long-term soil development, agro-ecosystem management and responses of ecosystems to global change. Overall, the volume seeks to spur development of cross-scale links for understanding belowground function in varied natural and managed ecosystems.
* First cross-scale ecologically-focused integration of information at the frontier of root, microbial, and soil faunal biology
* Establishes the links from extraordinarily small-scale processes in the rhizosphere to larger-scale belowground patterns and processes
* Includes valuable information on ecosystem response to increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and enhanced global nitrogen deposition
* Chapters written by a variety of experts, including soil scientists, microbial and soil faunal ecologists, and plant biologists

Book Description
Blending unconventional film theory with nontraditional psychology to provide a radically different set of critical methods and propositions about cinema, Moving Image Theory: Ecological Considerations looks at film through its communication properties rather than its social or political implications. Drawing on the tenets of James J. Gibson’s ecological theory of visual perception, the fifteen essays and forty-one illustrations gathered here by editors Joseph D. Anderson and Barbara Fisher Anderson offer a new understanding of how moving images are seen and understood.
Focusing on a more straightforward perception of the world and cinema in an attempt to move film theory closer to reality, Moving Image Theory proposes that we should first understand how cinema communicates information about the representation of the three-dimensional world through properties of image and sound.

Book Description
This entertaining and informative book is a resource on critical thinking and persuasive language. Using the oratory of America's talk show host, it unmasks methods of persuasion that can lead to false conclusions. See why it has been endorsed by environmental groups and critical thinkers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining and Educational.......2004-01-17
If you want an easy to understand book on how to recognize the persuasive tactics used in the media, this is for you. Very informative in how to recognize when you are being manipulated .A great text for universities for linguistics, critical thinking, writing, ethics, political science, persuasive language, advertising, public policy, environmental science, and other courses.
A textbook on falacious reasoning, not an attack on rush........2001-12-29
Dittoheads will still be offended to learn how few sound arguments their hero uses. But, Rush haters may be disapointed. The author doesn't challenge Mr. Limbaugh's beliefs or opinions, only his arguments. If you liked "Rush Limbaugh is a big fat idiot", this probably isn't for you. But, if you enjoy critical thinking, this is a nice change of pace from the usual dry textbook.
DO NOT BUY!.......2001-12-10
This author does not know what he is talking about, what a waste of money. Give it up!!

Book Description
Active (imaging radar) and passive (radiometer) microwave systems are increasingly used for Arctic ecological research. Unfortunately, until now ecologists interested in remote sensing often lacked access to the full suite of physical and analytical techniques of microwave systems, data processing, and ecological applications because a suitable reference book did not exist. Arctic Ecological Research from Microwave Satellite Observations answers this demand by summarizing the main microwave satellite applications for Arctic ecological research. This book is invaluable to specialists with a background in microwave techniques, as well as to other ecologists interested in applications of microwave active and passive remote sensing for tundra, boreal forest, and Arctic sea-ice habitat and marine mammal studies. It presents a brief introduction to Arctic ecological problems, the role of satellite sensing for monitoring Arctic ecosystems, and related data processing applications. The volume then examines results of Arctic sea-ice habitat studies using OKEAN-01 satellite data, then provides a comparative analysis of multisensor satellite monitoring of habitat using OKEAN-01, SSM/I and AVHRR satellite instruments. It also describes the evaluation of relative information content of ALMAZ-1, ERS-1, JERS-1 SAR, and Landsat-TM data for identifying wet tundra habitats. The book concludes with results of sensitive boreal forest type detection to monitor potential impacts of climate change on boreal forest structure.
Book Description
Most of us are familiar with the terms climate change and global warming, but not too many of us understand the science behind them. We don't really understand how climate change will affect us, and for that reason we might not consider it as pressing a concern as, say, housing prices or the quality of local education. This book explains the scientific knowledge about global climate change clearly and concisely in engaging, nontechnical language, describes how it will affect all of us, and suggests how government, business, and citizens can take action against it.
If people don't quite understand the seriousness of climate change, it is partly because politicians and the media have misrepresented the scientific community's strong consensus on it--politicians by selectively parsing the words of mainstream scientists, and the media by presenting supposedly balanced accounts that give the views of a small number of contrarians equal weight with empirically supported scientific findings. The science is complex, couched in the technical language of sinks, forcing, and albedo, and invokes probabilities, risks, ranges, and uncertainties. And policy discussions use such unfamiliar terms as clean development mechanism and greenhouse-gas intensity.
Climate Change explains the nuts and bolts of climate and the greenhouse effect and describes their interaction. It discusses the nature of consensus in science, and the consensus on climate change in particular. It describes both public- and private-sector responses, considers how to improve the way scientific findings are communicated, and evaluates the real risks both to vulnerable developing countries and to particular areas of the United States. We can better tackle climate change, this book shows us, if we understand it. We can use this knowledge to guide our own behavior and pressure governments and businesses to take action.

Book Description
The vibrant city of Dublin is divided into three areas: north and south of the River Liffey, and the Greater Dublin vicinity. Packed with details of each area, you'll find top 10 lists of the greatest pubs, the best places to enjoy traditional Irish music, the hottest restaurants, and incredible excursions all across Ireland.
Customer Reviews:
Needs some updating but still well worth it.......2006-12-17
If you are planning a short trip to Dublin this is a must have book. It covers excellent restaurants and wonderful places to stop and shop. The essential sights are all listed by region and are explained in enough detail for one to decide if they want to visit. If you are going for a longer period of time I would recommend a bigger guide but I would still get this one to walk around with.
Needs Updating!!.......2006-05-24
I bought this book based on previous DK purchases I had made and found it to be terribly out of date! This book was bought for my fiancee who was travelling to Ireland from the USA to visit myself and my family. Being Irish and living and working in Dublin I found the most basic information to be incorrect, most notably the currency which has been the Euro for the last 6 years. Other transport information also should be ammended in relation to the new overground rail system, called the Luas, that has vastly improved commuting for one side of Dublin to the other. on the whole this book does manage to portray Dublin as a city with an historic background that has to been seen to be appreciated. Also some of the references to attractions outside Dublin appear to make the rest of Ireland look less modern which gave the impression to me that it is more rural and agricultural than it actually is and may not be the most appealing to visitors! Anyway I hope this review just helps to point out some glaring mistakes that should be fixed. On the whole the quality of this DK book was well above other publications that I have read.
Excellent .......2005-10-10
A pleasure to read as an armchair travel book and very useful on the streets of Dublin on a recent trip.
Illustrations are scrumptious, information on specific sites informative but concise and it is pocket-size - what more could one want?
One of the Best.......2003-03-22
Want a great guide that gives you the information you need to know in a easy to reference way? Want a guide that is also a great souvenir? Go for this one! The main caution is to be sure to get a current edition -- Dublin is a city that is changing fast!
Great Pictures... but you're going to need another guide.......2002-12-30
This guidebook is great for its pictures and detailed diagrams of major sites, neighborhoods, and buildings. The book is absolutely filled with brilliant photos that help visitors (especially first time visitors like myself) what the sites look like. It also has photos of practical things such as roadsigns, the euro currency in all denominations, police cars, telephones, and even food. This might seem silly, but it's very helpful to know how to use their telephones and to learn which coins are which before going over there. It has a limited list of places to stay and doesn't go into detail about how to get to all the sites they cover. This is why I think this shouldn't be the only guide you buy if you're planning a trip to Ireland. It is definately one of the ones to buy, however. Another note: if you're like myself, and plan to travel light to Ireland, keep in mind that this book is rather heavy because of the thick, glossy pages - they're great for the pictures, but they'll weigh down your bag. Hope this helps!
Book Description
Sections include: Southeast Dublin, Southwest Dublin, and North of the Liffey.
Customer Reviews:
I hate Eyewitness Travel Guides.......2007-08-19
Although Eyewitness Travel Guides may offer more visual guidance than other guide books, they are still quite terrible. Maps are difficult to read and information is inconsistent.
if you are going to only Dublin this is a great one to use.......2006-12-17
If you are planning a trip to Dublin this is a must have book. It outlines the city and gives excellent recommendations on where to stay and eat. The way the city is divided up in the book is the perfect way to plan your trip and can be divided into really three days. It has some outlying things but if you are going around Ireland I would use the Eyewitness book on Ireland and pass on this one.
Get Eyewitness' Guide to Ireland instead.......2004-01-05
I bought this book in order to plan a trip to Ireland. I also purchased Ireland by Eyewitness. My advice, unless you are only going to Dublin, buy the Ireland book instead. The Dublin books contents are reproduced verbatim in the Ireland book, plus you get info on the rest of the country as well. Don't get me wrong--it's a good travel guide, but you get more for your money with the Ireland guide.

Book Description
Sarah's life in Colonial Pennsylvania is anything but easy. She and her family have to grow, raise, and make everything they need-including their clothes. The time and effort that takes means that nothing is replaced until it's absolutely necessary. As Sarah helps plant flax and raise sheep throughout the year, her one dress gets tighter and tighter. But in the nick of time, wool is spun, fabric is woven, and a brand-new dress is made just for her.
The details of colonial life are captured in lively verse and glowing illustrations, making Sarah's joyful spin in her new dress an ending readers will cheer.
Illustrated by Ted Rand.
Customer Reviews:
Love Sarah!.......2005-11-15
Sarah is a sweet and realistic character from the colonial period.
If you are studying colonial history or if you want to showcase that world for your child, you must buy this book.
What of course makes it absolutely splendiferous of a story is the author. We all know. . .or we SHOULD know about this writer, Verla Kay. She writes things
1) in rhyme
2) with historical flair.
My classroom would not be without her titles for resource and literature.
A win win win!
A lovely book.......2004-09-28
Verla Kay blends beautiful, cryptic rhyme and historical detail into stories that captivate children. "Homespun Sarah" does not disappoint. This book found its way to our shelves for homeschooling purposes, but has since become a family favorite for "snuggle time with books."
Ted Rand's illustrations are lively and homey, and bring the text to life.
This book is not only essential for homeschoolers of young children who are approaching American History in their studies, but for families dedicated to reading to their children.
Wonderful........2003-06-17
I have done much research on the colonial period. It never ceases to amaze me how the children's books bring it all home so much more powerfully than any history book.
Wonderful.
Book Description
Through dramatic depictions of significant moments in American history, this informative series gives young readers a vivid sense of Colonial American life -- its farms and villages, cities and ports, and the struggles and dreams of its inhabitants. Illustrated and indexed.

A fantastic book for the study of the german homestead!.......1998-12-17
We study the German heritage of our county and how many of the farms in our county were established. This book is great to show the children what is on the farm and the life of these new Americans. It was also great is showing the life of an indentured servant. Great book to have in your library!
