Excellent starter book........1999-08-16
This book is well illustrated and can serve as an excellent resource for those wanting to know about range plants. This book would be useful to ranchers, students, laymen, and technicians. If one wanted to carry just one book to the field to identify and learn basic things about a variety of plants, this would be the one.

Book Description
In nature, the roots of most plants are infected by symbiotic fungi to form mycorrhiza which play a central role in the capture of nutrients from the soil. Most of our knowledge of the biology of the mycorrhizal symbiosis has been derived from studies carried out under controlled conditions in the laboratory or glasshouse. There is an increasing awareness of the need to extend these studies to the more natural situations in which the symbiosis evolved and in which it normally functions. This volume brings together a series of papers which place major emphasis upon mycorrhizal function in nature. They consist of edited and revised contributions to the Third European Symposium on Mycorrhizas, held at the University of Sheffield, 19-23 August 1991.

Description:
Phosphorus (P) is one of the most limiting macronutrients in savannas. Seasonality strongly affects nutrition processes in such ecosystems. We studied arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM), microbial and phosphatase activity in the rhizosphere of Trachypogon plumosus Ness. in three acid savanna soils differing in taxonomic order and P content. Microbial number and activity, P mineralization and AM dynamics were quantified in rhizospheric samples of T. plumosus during the dry and the rainy season at three sites in the Estacion Experimental La Iguana, Guarico State, Venezuela. Soils were characterized and infective AM propagules enumerated using the most probable number method on Sorghum vulgare Pers. Acid phosphatase activity (APA), dehydrogenase activity (DHA) and number of bacteria and fungi were determined in rhizospheric samples. AM colonized root length percentage (%CRL) was also determined in T. plumosus. Our data showed that the three soil orders had a very low fertility. AM infective potential showed values similar to those reported for tropical savannas. Also, AM %CRL was high for a grass species. APA increased in the rainy season in all cases. However, DHA and microbial counts decreased during the rainy season suggesting that soil microorganisms do not mediate the increase in APA. AM colonization, seasonal changes in microbial activity and in APA seemed to be important processes for P availability and T. plumosus P-uptake in savanna ecosystems.

Description:
The colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal spore abundance and community were investigated in a valley-type semi-savanna vegetation of Yuan River in southwest China. Of the 62 plants representing 33 families surveyed, 59 plant species (about 95%) were arbuscular mycorrhizal and 3 species (5%) were possibly arbuscular mycorrhizal. Rhizosphere soils harbored abundant arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal spores in a range of 240-6430 per 100g soil with an average of 2096, and most spores were small with diameter less than 70@mm (about 78%). The fungi most frequently found were members of the genera Acaulospora and Glomus. Acaulospora spinosa, A. denticulata, A. tuberculata, Glomus sinuosa, G. clarum, G. intraradices and G. microaggregatum were the most common species. These results revealed that arbuscular mycorrhizas are a common and important component in this semi-savanna vegetation; the high spore density and colonization were presumably a selective adaptation toward the hot and arid ecosystem.

Description:
Growth and yield potential of wheat inoculated with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices were investigated at different phosphorus levels under field conditions. Surface sterilized wheat (Triticum aestivum var. Swift) was infected with sheared-root inoculum at the rate of 0.5g dry weight per 1000 seed and sown in P-deficient loamy and slightly acidic (pH 5.5) field plots fertilized with 0, 5, 10 and 20kgha^-^1 of commercial P. Plants inoculated had significantly higher dry weight and yield compared to controls. Mycorrhization of roots in both inoculated and control plants increased with P-level but decreased over time at higher P-levels. The mycorrhiza-mediated growth effect was higher at 5 and 10kg than at 20kgPha^-^1 in terms of plant dry weight, number of grain per spike, and 1000 grain weight. It is suggested that sheared-root inoculum of G. intraradices may contribute to reducing P fertilizer applications.

Description:
Major factors that constrain tropical soil fertility and sustainable agriculture are low nutrient capital, moisture stress, erosion, high P fixation, high acidity with aluminium toxicity, and low soil biodiversity. The fragility of many tropical soils limits food production in annual cropping systems. Because some tropical soils under natural conditions have high biological activity, an increased use of the biological potential of these soils to counter the challenges of food production problems is proposed. Most plant species (including the major crops in the tropics) form beneficial associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. These fungi could be the most important and poorly understood resource for nutrient acquisition and plant growth in agriculture. This review treats the role of AM fungi in enhancing physical, chemical, and biological soil quality. It focuses on the roles of AM in maintenance and improvement of soil structure, the uptake of relatively immobile elements, both macronutrients (phosphorus) and micronutrients (zinc), the alleviation of aluminium and manganese toxicity, the interactions with other beneficial soil organisms (nitrogen-fixing rhizobia), and improved protection against pathogens. Mycorrhizal associations enable a better use of sparingly soluble phosphorus pools, thereby increasing the efficiency of added phosphorus fertilizer and of the large relatively immobile phosphorus pools. Mycorrhizal management through agroforestry, reduced soil disturbance or crop rotation, is often a better option than mycorrhizal inoculation, considering the problems and costs of large-scale inoculum production. Research directions that are needed to increase understanding of mycorrhizal associations in tropical cropping systems and to increase mycorrhizal benefit are indicated.

Seasonality of organic phosphorus mineralization in the rhizosphere of the native savanna grass, Trachypogon plumosus [An article from: Soil Biology and Biochemistry]

Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Soil Biology and Biochemistry, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Savanna ecosystems have low primary productivity, strong seasonality, and acid soils with low phosphorus (P) content. Organic P (Po) comprises around 50% of the total soil P and is plant-available only after mineralization. Rhizosphere processes mediated by plants, microorganisms and arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) are important for plant P nutrition. We studied P transformation rates, Po-fractionation, acid phosphomonoesterase activity (APA), AM status, dehydrogenase activity (DHA), and bacterial and fungal plate counts in the rhizosphere of the native dominant grass Trachypogon plumosus. We collected samples from three acid savanna soils differing in order and P content (Entisol, Vertisol and Ultisol) at Estacion Experimental La Iguana (Northeastern Venezuela) during the dry, rainy and transitional seasons over a 2-year-period. Less available Po fractions (moderately labile, moderately and highly resistant) seem to be involved in short-term P-cycling transformations as they significantly varied with season. During the rainy season plant P content (576-1160mgPkg^-^1 dry weight) and APA (44-200mgPNPkg^-^1 dry soil) were higher, while microbial number and activity (DHA) were lower. The higher P availability in the Entisol (6-9mgPkg^-^1 dry soil) resulted in a better plant nutritional status and inhibited APA. T. plumosus seems to be highly dependent on AM symbiosis (45-71% AM colonized root length, 0.6-8 AM spores g^-^1 dry soil), especially during the rainy season. Po mineralization processes, mediated by biological associations in the rhizosphere, are crucial for understanding seasonal P-cycling and fertility in acid savanna soils.

This book gives ou a nice overview of the region, and incredible specific tips for visiting Russia.
A Fine Overview on Russia, but not Ukraine or Belarus.......2001-05-07
As usual for the Insight series, this book provides a great deal of practical information on the history, cultures, life, and tourism, especially for the visitor to the great cities of the Russian Federation, along many spectacular photographs. However, I thought the chapter on Lake Baikal was disproportionately long at the expense of other parts of rural Russia. Perhaps the book's greatest deficiency is the skimpy treatment of Ukraine (and Belarus, for that matter), which should now appear in their own full guides. Less than 60 pages of photos and text just doesn't cut it for these two countries combined. A charming photograph of a bunch of Ukrainian schoolkids posing for the camera more or less seems to ask the reader, "What about us?" Simply put, they should have an Insight Guide book of their own next time around.
Insight Guide Russia Insightful But Not Complete.......2000-04-19
Insight Guide Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine covers a goegraphically vast expanse of the three countries. It offers a comprehensive history of the regions, and an overview guide to slavic and eurasian culture; including music, art, theater, literature, and food. The large section dedicated to cities and towns of the three countries is excellent for a tourist who wants a brief overview of the architectural and cultural highlights of each location. The street, country, and metro maps are excellent. The small list of lodging and restaurants in each city is adequate, but not spectacular, and most listings are on the pricey side. This book did have one deficiency; while it listed the locations of each city and landmark on maps, the writers did provided limited insight as to how to reach these locations from a central point such as the larger cities in each region. There is no mention of specific bus or train routes connecting the cities, and little information about reaching outlying monasteries and resorts, other than a goegraphical direction. I recommend this book as an aid to a tourist on a an organized trip of Russia. It is also an excellent source for the independent traveller who speaks Russian well enough to arrange their own travel between cities by inquiring at train stations or tourist centers. Other useful tools are the language guide, tips on local customs, and the communication information pages, which offer telephone, mail, internet, and wiring information.

DK Eyewitness Travel Guides- Moscow & Prague.......2006-03-24
These are by far the best travel books out there, because of the detailed picture maps and the specific historical info for each area of the cities.
GOOD, BUT NOT GREAT.......2005-08-23
Its up to the minute information is invaluable as you travel around St. Petersburg. But, its AAA apearance is so dull you hardly want to use it. My recommendation is to buy this for the current info. and the EYEWITNESS GUIDE for its intelligent and beautifully illustrated usability.
Moscow for Dummies.......2004-01-03
Greetings,
As the founder of a company devoted to enriching cultural and business travel to Russia, we are always looking for a good, general guidebook for clients. We give "Moscow Eyewitness Travel Guide" to all of our full-service clients going to Moscow. It is a good visual and historic guide to St Petersburg,
We call "Moscow Eyewitness Travel Guide" the "Moscow for Dummies" as it is designed to be browsed. The thumbnail-sized color photographs will inspire you to read a bit more about the attractions, so it is ideal to review before the trip, as well as during the first meeting with a local tour guide ("Gee, this building looks interesting, how do I see it?"). Most of our clients read the book before going, and put Post-It notes on pages with interesting attractions to ask about.
"Moscow Eyewitness Travel Guide" is also ideal for the cruise ship visitors who will be in Moscow for less than three days, as the photos give a good appreciation to the visitor of what there is to see, especially in a limited amount of time.
The history and art sections are reasonably good for a guide book. The restaurant and hotel suggestions are accurate (as far as quality and general pricing range, although the pricing itself is not accurate)..
Note, however, that we always tell clients and other visitors to Russia that you should get the most current guidebook, as attractions, hotels, restaurants and transportation options do often change--AND THEN VERIFY THE INFORMATION! All in all, we recommend "Moscow Eyewitness Travel Guide" as the first guidebook to purchase when planning on journey of Discovering Russia's capital city, Moscow.

Customer Reviews:
1995 edition???.......2002-10-12
Given the recent changes in Berlin, I was quite surprised that the published date of this book is 1995. As I began looking through it, I became concerned when I read phrases like "Once Berlin resumes its role as capital towards the end of the century, ..." Other than the publish date, the book seems great: lots of crisp photos, good touring routes and location maps, and concise descriptions. And its all in a nice compact form.
