Book Description
Snorkel Maui and Lanai is the one and only guidebook exclusively devoted to snorkeling on Maui and Lanai. In this expanded second edition, it has even more sites and maps than before. No other guide comes close to the level of snorkeling detail provided here. Take "Snorkel Maui and Lanai", along with a good general guidebook of your choice, and you'll have all the details you need for a great vacation!
From a colorful cover to 39 accurate maps and details on 67 top snorkeling sites, SML draws you into the fascinating underwater world that shouldn't be missed by anyone touring Maui or Lanai.
As Dave Barry says: "When you finally see what goes on underwater, you realize that you've been missing the whole point of the ocean--it's like going to the circus and staring at the outside of the tent."
Snorkel Maui and Lanai is the second in a series of guidebooks that provide more detailed snorkeling information than ever before available for each of the Hawaiian islands in an attractive, easy to carry package. "Snorkel Hawaii: The Big Island", also available from Amazon.com, provides the same detailed coverage of Hawaii's biggest island. "Snorkel Kauai", guide to the Garden Isle, will also be available on Amazon.com in early 2001. Our website, snorkelguides.com, provides detailed updates and more.

Accurate and invaluable.......2007-05-26
I went snorkeling in northwest Maui in April 2007, and found the Malinoski guide to be accurate and more complete than other guides that I read.
Snorkel Maui .......2006-02-26
If you are going to Maui and plan to snorkel, this book is a MUST !!!! It will take you to sites you would NEVER find on your own.
snorkeling in Maui is entirely over rated - so is book.......2005-10-31
We went to many spots in this book, and found the rating system to be a little off. In general, the Caribbean offers superior snorkeling to Hawaii, and even the best spot that the authors may rave about in this book is mediocre at best. We also found other guide books to give more accurate info on the best snorkel spots. This book is good if you are afraid of the water or have kids, but those more experienced may actually be better off without the book, relying instead on timely advice from locals.
Only good Snorkel focused book for Maui..........2005-09-05
I have used both the Snorkel Kauai and this book on different trips to Hawaii. On our most recent trip to Maui, I found this book to be quite useful for finding those harder to find access points to the numerous beaches in South Maui. I also have the Maui Revealed book by Dougherty & Friedmann, but I find their discussions on snorkeling spots to be quite limited in all of their books and definitely not as good. Also, with Snorkel Maui and Lanai, the beaches are organized geographically around the island, the maps are closer to the page describing the beach, and the directions to get to the beach and find parking are much better than you will find in the Maui Revealed book. I didn't mean this to be a comparison of these two books, but based on other comments, I think if you want to explore the beaches in detail for where is best to snorkel you should buy this book. It is not expensive and is a good deal.
The most useful section of this book is on pages 40-42, "Maui Snorkeling Sites at a Glance". They list the beaches going from west to south to east around the island and a "snorkel worthy" rating, how easy is the access, facilities, what page you'll find the description on, and then a brief note on each. These pages are well worth the cost of the book and I would use them constantly to plan our next day. I found their ratings (A, B, or C) to be dead on and "easy, intermediate, or advanced" rating to be good, too. The next best aspect of the book is letting you know about the beach access parking, you don't often get that for every beach in Maui Revealed.
A very useful book!
P.S. As they suggest, do NOT miss Honolua Bay, Malu'aka Beach, and the Fishbowl (we followed the instructions from Maui Revealed for that one, though). Ulua Beach was beautiful and good for snorkeling, too.
Hope this helps.
Be sure you're buying the most recent edition.......2005-07-17
The version of Snorkel Maui and Lanai (second edition) listed as copyright November 2000 is the most recent version of this book. If you are seeing this on the reviews for the 1996 version, click on the authors name to find it. It has more maps and sites, and up to date information! The Amazon search engine from time to time sends folks to the original 1996 out of print edition in error.
The actual copyright of the second edition is 2001, and we will get that corrected on Amazon.com

Great Book .......2004-10-13
Ann Fielding has put together an informative book that is very useful for snorkeling.
A nice addition to any saltwater aquarium hobbyists' library.......1998-10-05
This book is packed with SPECTACULAR photos of fishes, corals and inverts found in Hawaiian waters. It includes a common name, scientific name, Hawaiian name (if applicable), and description with each photo. It is a good guide in helping to identify and learn more about these marine animals.

The colorful cover features a beautiful watercolor rendition of the saddleback butterflyfish, painted especially for us by a talented Hawai'ian artist, Camille Young. Dave Barry provides funny and insightful commentary.

Takes you by the hand.......2007-08-22
Excellent guide. Gets you there, shows you where to go in, when not to go in, and what to look for. I've been to Kauai snorkeling at least 5 times, and this was the best ever, thanks to this guide. Highly recommended.
Indispensable guide to snorkeling in Kauai.......2006-01-27
This guide is indispensable for locating the best snorkeling sites in Kauai. The information on public parking as well as entering and exiting the water at the sites is very helpful. I just returned from a trip to Kauai, and this book was absolutely priceless in helping me choose the best snorkeling sites on the island. If you're a serious snorkeler, this is the book for you! Even if you're interested only in swimming beaches on Kauai, this book is great for getting directions to the beaches and info on public parking.
This is the new, enlarged full color edition of Snorkel Kauai.......2005-12-07
For those who enjoyed the original Snorkel Kauai, you'll love this new enlarged full color 2nd edition. There are now dramatic beach pictures, as well as colorful detailed maps and lots of underwater photography by an award-winning photographer.
Amazon will soon have Search inside the Book for this title.
Follow the book and you will see amazing things!!!.......2004-08-01
What a book!!! I purchased this book prior to going to Kauai in December 2003. Did my reading/research and thanks to the Malinoski's found some excellent snorkeling locations. I only wish there was more vacation time to hit every spot listed within the book.
My brother and I snorkeled one location (which was listed within the book) and swam with several green sea turtles. It was amazing!!! If you do the same, remember that you CANNOT harass or even touch the turtles. They are protected by Hawaiian law, as are the monk seals (sea lions).
I just bought the Malinowski's book for snorkeling Maui. I hope to visit Maui this Christmas and see more amazing underwater sights. (one tip of advice: purchase a good underwater digital camera -OR- a disposable underwater camera (Fuji or Kodak, $8-10 at Walmart) for your snorkeling adventures. You'll find plenty of fish, coral and other underwater life to photograph).
The definitive snorkel guide for Kaua'i.......2002-07-10
Boy, I wish I had had this guide at the beginning of our recent trip to Kaua'i. It's terrific! We've snorkeled in many of the places described - Ke'e, Tunnels, 'Anini, Po'ipu, Pu'u Poa, Hideaways - and the information jives with what we experienced. However, with this guide in hand we'd have known not just which places to go (other guidebooks steered us there), but more detailed information about the reef formation, currents, and safety aspects of each spot. For instance, I spent most of my time at Ke'e fighting the current on the left side of the bay, when all along the best conditions are to the right.
In addition to on-the-nose snorkel information, the authors do a very good job of advising novice snorkelers on equipment, techniques, and safety concerns. There are helpful sections on general fish types (not an exhaustive guide, but enough to help a beginner distinguish a wrasse from a parrotfish), plus plenty of pertinent information on the island, its weather, and interesting excursions out of the water. Although we've been to the island twice now, I learned some useful things for our next (anxiously awaited) trip.
This is the book I'd recommend first to anyone interested in snorkeling on Kaua'i. There are other fine general guidebooks out there, don't get me wrong, but this is exactly what it says it is: SNORKEL Kaua'i.

Book Description
The Grand Canyon comes to life in more than 100 stunning photographs.
From near and far they come, nearly five million each year, to see the Grand Canyon, long cherished as one of the nation's treasures. Grand Canyon Country explores more than the spectacular 277-mile-long gash in Arizona's red-rock country. Author Seymour L. Fishbein takes you to the remote forests of the Kaibab Plateau, the lonely reaches of the Arizona strip, and the multihued landscapes of the Painted Desert. Fishbein probes the intriguing history of canyon country, meets its people, and talks with those who ponder environmental issues and see threats to this magnificent region. The book -- like the canyon itself -- is something to treasure.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT PICTURES BUT SHORT ON MYSTERY.......2005-03-29
This NG guide is rich with photos of the canyon's majesty, vegetation, and wildlife, but short on history. Much of the book detailed the author's voyage down the river. Having bought this book at the Grand Canyon I can say with authority that the photos in no way capture the beauty and magnificence of the Canyon. While there I couldn't stop staring into it and walking around to various views. The light of the day changes everything and gives a whole new perspective. Looking down into the canyon calls you to explore. One day I'm hiking down there.
There is much more mystery and intrigue to the Grand Canyon than is contained in this book. Overall, just OK.

Book Description
Shore Lines can help you restore meaning and gain perspective. Mari Messer is a sea lover, who takes annual seaside retreats to collect shells, watch people and animals, and fill notebooks with images, musings, and reflections. The result of her sojourns is a book in the tradition of Anne Morrow Lindbergh's Gift from the Sea. Shore Lines presents the sea as a guide to life, helping readers become more focused and grounded as they view their lives through Messer's lyrical lens.
With Shore Lines, Messer inspires readers to "explore your own inner sea-space. To some, taking time for reflection may seem like selfish indulgence. . . . But perhaps now more than ever, we need such a respite, a chance to restore balance and clarity. . . . We need to go apart when there's danger we may come apart. If you can't get to the sea, I urge you to sit beside a fountain in a park, or seek out a river, a lake, even a puddle for your reflection. Or simply come along on an imaginal sojourn beside the sea as you read these pages."
Dip into Shore Lines to discover:
The power of the night stars appearing at twilight over the sea.
The meaning of a bouquet of gull feathers.
How to learn from sea cows and have "a friendship for no advantage."
The retreating tide has a pallet that "accepts our old work and leaves a smooth new beach to entice us to begin again."
Shore Lines is a vacation retreat by the sea that anyone can take any time of the year.

Book Description
This description of the Stone Age settlement preserved in the sand dunes of Scotland's Orkney Islands includes how it was discovered and what it reveals about life in prehistoric times.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing in lack of information.......2007-07-25
While any accurate photos and information on Skara Brae are a gift to the world, this book is a disappointment. It appears more as a quick way to make a buck than an homage to a marvel of pre-history.
My impression, however accurate or not, is that the author skimmed what travel brochures she could obtain at the site and reformatted the information for the pages of a hasty book.
But seek out any windows, including this book if nothing else, to see the world of Skara Brae, where people didn't have wood and had to build with stone, leaving intact their great rooms, tables, bed-nooks, and even niches in the bed-area walls, (for personal effects?). I feel the centuries between us erode when I see pictures of their everyday structures, which are otherwise lost in houses build of wood.
- Jane Yett
Nicely-done intro for young readers........2004-12-14
Caroline Arnold, Stone Age Farmers by the Sea (Clarion, 1997)
Stone Age Farmers by the Sea, aimed at a young market, is an interesting introduction and overview to the Orkney archaeological site of Skara Brae. While it's hard to call any sixty-four page profusely-illustrated book comprehensive, Stone Age Farmers by the Sea pauses to consider a number of introductory things that many more advanced-age books ignore, perhaps because those books assume the reader already knows a good bit about Skara Brae. Arnold, by not falling into that trap, comes up with a book that can be enjoyed by young and old novices to Skara Brae alike. *** ½
Good Young Person's Book--Short for the $$.......2002-01-06
I didn't realize this was a young persons title when I added it to my wish list. After receiving it as a gift, I was at first disappointed. But once I opened it and started reading, almost all was OK. The book is well-written, even if it is targeted for the 8-12 crowd and the pictures are great! The only negative is the $ for such a short book. It's less than 50 pages, but it is nicely printed and bound. I'll enjoy it now and my kids will in a few years when they are older.
