4 out of 5 stars A good all-purpose field guide.......2000-04-29

On the whole, Ruppert & Fox have developed a very useful, easy to read field guide. Indeed, this is probably the best general purpose field guide for Southeast marine invertebrates available (it is also far better than the comparable Peterson guides). This guide is perfect for people who are just beginning to explore the marine environment, or for people who do not necessarily need to unequivically identify organisms to the species level. Overall, most hobby-level naturalists will find this an excellent addition to their libraries.

That said, however, no field guide is without flaws and this one has several. First, when you attempt to identify organisms, you find that taxa are arranged in a haphazard fashion. In a (poor) attempt to make ID's easy, the authors have forsaken the traditional taxonomic organization of phyla and have ordered them according to general morphological appearance. Second, with the descriptions provided, it is often very difficult to distinguish among con-geners. Finally, the authors have included lots "just so" natural history information. Although this certainly spices up the reading, many of the stories are unfounded. As an example: the authors claim that the Sargassum Sea Slug (Scyllaea pelagica) feeds on the floats of sargassum weed, which then provide the slug with buoyancy. This is not true. The "floats" inside Scyllaea are actually camoflaged hepatic organs.

Although these problems don't detract from the general usefulness of the guide, they are distracting, and at times misleading. Overall, though, this is an excellent resource and a must for all Atlantic (USA) marine naturalists.

        Book Description

Part 2 of volume I deals with the history of the Near East from about 3000 to 1750 B.C. In Egypt, a long period of political unification and stability enabled the kings of the Old Kingdom to develop and exploit natural resources, to mobilize both the manpower and the technical skill to build the pyramids, and to encourage sculptors in the production of works of superlative quality. After a period of anarchy and civil war at the end of the Sixth Dynasty the local rulers of Thebes established the so-called Middle Kingdom, restoring an age of political calm in which the arts could again flourish. In Western Asia, Babylonia was the main centre and source of civilisation, and her moral, though not always her military, hegemony was recognized and accepted by the surrounding countries of Anatolia, Syria, Palestine, Assyria and Elam. The history of the region is traced from the late Uruk and Jamdat Nasr periods up to the rise of Hammurabi, the most significant developments being the invention of writing in the Uruk period, the emergence of the Semites as a political factor under Sargon, and the success of the centralized bureaucracy under the Third Dynasty of Ur.

              Book Description

This second part of the sixth volume of Joseph Needham's great enterprise is the first to be written by a collaborator. Francesca Bray, working closely with Dr Needham, has produced the most comprehensive study of Chinese agriculture to be published in the West. From a huge mass of source material, often confusing and obscure, , and from first-hand study in China, she brings order and illumination to a crucial area of Chinese technological development. Miss Bray sees agriculture as a system of technology holding a balance between nature and society: it represents an interplay between what is allowed by the natural environment and what is hindered by the state of society. She thus begins her book with an account of the ecological background to China's agricultural history and with a thorough survey of the source material. The main body of the book is an account, organised broadly along the lines of the great medieval Chinese treatises, of the technological history of agriculture, with major sections devoted to field systems, implements and techniques (sowing, harvesting, storing) and crop systems (what has grown and where and how crops rotated). The crops studies in detail are those without which no Chinese could survive: cereals, legumes, oil crops, tubers, fibre crops, vegetables and fruit - the crops, in other words, of self sufficiency in times of hardship and of commercial enterprise in times of prosperity. The concluding section contrasts Europe's Agricultural Revolution with agrarian change in North China in the Han and with the 'Green Revolution' in South China in the Sung. Important distinctions between dry-grain and wet-rice agriculture are noted with the consequent variations in the development of Chinese society. In the theoretical analysis which concludes this section we find a vital contribution to the elucidation of the main question posed by Dr Needham's work: why did the Scientific Revolution which transformed the world take place in Europe and not in China?

According to evidence, astronomy in India, China, and several other cultures developed independently. Indian astronomy wasn't influenced by Greek astronomy until Alexander came to the area. Chinese astronomy has at least an 8,000-year history; later developments suggest collaboration with Iranian cultures, but the oldest stuff is homegrown. So how did this writer determine that this astronomy came from the same source? Where is the archeological and literary provenance?

There isn't any. You have to accept on faith that this person is telling the truth. They aren't, and they didn't check to see whether any of the nonsense they spouted had any relation to evidence.

                5 out of 5 stars A very scholarly book.......2001-04-08

The thematic approach of the book deviates from the usual country-to-country approach espoused my most authors on the subject. It gives the reader a better understanding of the milestones and institutions of Souutheast Asia. It is more of a "why" and "how" approach, instead of the "who", "what", and "when" approach. In short, very scholarly!

                  Book Description

Although the Royal Canadian Navy had spent the early years of the Second World War in a desperate struggle against German U-boats on the North Atlantic convoy routes, the service's professional officers never lost sight of the need to build a balanced national navy, one that included the larger warships required for Canada to project its naval power around the globe.

Part 2 of the Official Operational History continues the story of the Royal Canadian Navy begun in No Higher Purpose and carries the narrative into the decisive final years of the Second World War, as the navy largely achieves its "blue water" ambitions. Based on extensive research in Canadian, British, American and German archives, A Blue Water Navy follows the RCN's path to victory from 1943 to 1945 as Canadian warships engage the enemy across the globe in the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific Oceans as well as in the dangerous waters of the European littoral.

Beginning with the Allies' North Atlantic triumph over the German submarine arm in April-May 1943, the volume examines the navy's many roles in European waters, including the RCN's combined operations role in the amphibious assaults on Dieppe, northwest Africa and Sicily; the procurement of large fleet destroyers and their operations guarding important Arctic and Mediterranean bound convoys; and the culmination of the RCN's overseas buildup with Operation Neptune and the invasion of Normandy.

A Blue Water Navy recounts the multitude of tasks Canadian naval forces performed in the war's final phases, from motor-torpedo boat, minesweeping and fleet operations to the inshore anti-submarine campaign. In tracing the acquisition of cruisers and Canadian-manned escort carriers, this important and well-illustrated history thoroughly explores the world-wide scope of the Royal Canadian Navy's involvement in the Second World War and its transition from a small-ship navy into a balanced force.

A Blue Water Navy was written by a team of professional historians and has been in preparation for many years. The first volume of this official history, No Higher Purpose, was highly praised by veterans of the RCN, current sailors and naval officers, and students of military and naval history. This second volume will be equally well received.

                    Book Description

Volumes I and II of The Cambridge Ancient History have had to be entirely rewritten as a result of the very considerable additions to knowledge which have accrued in the past forty-five years. For the same reason it has also been necessary to increase the size of the volumes and to divide each of them into two separately published parts. The individual chapters have already appeared as fascicles, but without maps, indexes and chronological tables which, for practical reasons, have been reserved for these volumes. Some additions and corrections have also been made in order to bring the text, as far as possible, up to date. Together the new volumes provide a history of Egypt and the Ancient Orient (including Greece and the Aegean region) down to 1000 BC in a form suitable for both specialist and student. Volume II, Part I, deals with the history of the region from about 1800 to 1380 BC. This was the era of Hammurabi in Western Asia, the Hyksos and warrior-kings of the Eighteenth Dynasty in Egypt, and the Minoan and early Mycenaean civilizations in Crete and mainland Greece.

The information in this volume is somewhat dated, but it remains a rich reference source.

This book even though a little startling at first. Brings to light some very hidden truths. These truths have been hidden from knowledge. The Bible states that "we shall know the truth, and the truth shall set us free". We need truth in a world full of uncertainties and lies. Truth brings knowledge. It is our Plumbline to measure everything with. We need this to survive. Life is empty in uncertainties. We know where we are going in truth and where we have come from! This book reveals - lays open, it is bare! Thanks for all the arduous research but it was well worth it. Thanks and well done.
