Inexpensive and useful.......2007-08-01
We have used four of the Deckers' national park road guides so far and found them all to be worthwhile--especially at their low price. The guides help ensure that you don't miss the "must see" places. This is especially useful if you have to allocate your time carefully.
Useful Guide.......2007-01-26
I would recommend a guide to get the most from your Death Valley trip. We entered the park from the south, from Pahrump, where the traffic is lighter and the landscape quite fasinating. The guide was very useful and lead us to sites we might have bypassed.

California Desert Flowers: An Introduction to Families, Genera, and Species (Phyllis M. Faber Books)
ASIN: 0762711620 |
Book Description
The Mojave Desert eco-region extends from eastern California to northwestern Arizona, southern Nevada, and southwestern Utah, and boasts plant communities as diverse as alkali sinks, dune systems, Joshua tree woodland, pinyon juniper woodland, mixed mojave scrub, and even riparian woodland. Mojave Desert Wildflowers will be appreciated not only by amateur wildflower enthusiasts, but experts will also find the detailed photographs and charts useful in distinguishing among similar species in difficult groups. Species are arranged by color and plant family for easy identification. This guide features 300 of the common species, full-color photographs, detailed descriptions, information on bloom season, and interesting facts about each plant.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely Easy To Use.......2006-04-16
This is probably the easiest to use desert plant book I have (and I have eight that focus on desert plants in all). What it lacks in completeness, it more than makes up for in terms of ease of use. There is a picture for each plant and the plants are grouped according to flower color. So as long as the plant is in bloom, it's not too hard to find out what it is. This book does a great job of covering the plants you are most likely to come across which makes it a great book to thumb through in the field. If you are dealing with similar species within the same genus or rare plants, you'll probably want to get the Jepson guide.
Beautiful pix, helpful text.......2005-09-02
I love these Falcon guides mainly because of the lavish color illustrations. Every flower in the book has its own color picture, along with helpful descriptions. The front matter in this book includes all sorts of background material about the Mojave, along with the usual educational stuff about plant types, leaf distribution, etc. And the book is made to last -- if you take any care of it at all, it will last you forever.
Great book.......2005-02-12
Money well spent. We are ready for wildflower season! A lot of color pictures with good information. If you live in or near the Mojave Desert this is a valuable book.
A Gorgeous, Informative, Sturdy Field Guide.......2003-07-15
Pam MacKay's 'Mojave Desert Wildflowers' is a wonderfully informative & beautifully photographed guide to the wildflowers of the Mojave. This sturdy plastic-coated field guide contains over 300 gorgeous photos, finely detailed plant descriptions, and is virtually an introductory textbook on Mojave Desert ecology. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates the Mojave Desert. The author lives & teaches in the Mojave and her dedication, attention to detail, and love of the desert are revealed on every page.
Jim Otterstrom
Beautiful Book!.......2003-05-15
This guide is so easy to use and the pictures are beautiful. I highly recommend this guide for first time wildflower enthusiasts!

Great Information!.......2006-03-30
This book provides information on a large number of great trips in the Death Valley area. I've personally used this book as a guide for several trips and have found it to be reasonably accurate (which is difficult considering the constantly changing conditions in the Death Valley area). The author provides a lot of extra information pertaining to human and natural history which adds to the interest of the trip and gives ideas for further research. The author has also written several other useful guides which are also very useful.

A FalconGuide to Death Valley National Park (Exploring Series)
ASIN: 0870814095 |
Book Description
In the fall of 1994, Death Valley National Park became the fifty-third park to be added to the U.S. park system. Spanning more than three million acres, Death Valley is the largest park in the contiguous United States and features a stunningly diverse array of natural attractions.
The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley National Park is the first complete guidebook available for this spectacular area. It covers the park's geologic history and also reviews the human history of the valley, form the Indians and first western explorers to the prospectors, miners, and present-day visitors.
Shrubs, trees, and wildflowers are described along with where and when they can be found. The habitats and lifestyles of the wildlife, from the rangy coyote to the tiny springsnail, are shared with the reader.
The Explorer's Guide contains short walks, day hikes, backpacking trips, and numerous descriptive road logs that lead explorers into the wilderness backcountry of mines, ghost towns, cactus gardens, incredible scenic vistas, and desert mysteries.
Written by two acknowledged desert naturalists, explorers, and conservationists, The Explorer's Guide is the only book you'll need for an all-encompassing experience in Death Valley National Park.
Customer Reviews:
Not for explorers!.......2006-05-16
We planned a week exploring around Death Valley based on this book. Not visiting the touristy places that you can find on any map, but exploring canyons that don't get nearly as much traffic. Maybe it was partially because the book hasn't been updated in awhile, but the descriptions of the places were wildly different from what we found on the ground.
This guy was a Superintendant there for a few years, and thought he'd write a book -- big deal. Coming out of one canyon where he described springs all over the place but we found only rock, we met some people who had another guide that was much better -- sorry that I can't remember the name. Anyway, my advice is to look around, and buy something else -- and something with maps in it, for one thing.
Good introduction to DVNP.......2006-03-30
This book provides a good general introduction to Death Valley, but lacks detail on hiking routes. If you're going to be hiking Death Valley, Michel Digonnet's "Hiking Death Valley: A Guide to Its Natural Wonders & Mining Past" provides better details. The Bryans' book covers more locations, but provides less detail on each.
Very good Introductory Guidebook .......2006-03-05
For a general introduction to DV and several of its scenic roadways, unpaved roads, and hiking trails, it's not bad at all. Of course, you always need a good topographic map(s) of the park as well, and the latest information from the rangers, as roads wash out, and trails become blocked or impassible. Only a fool would explore DV, even by car or 4WD, with only the tiny maps in a guide such as this.
While motor vehicle travelers can get by with plenty of water, a full-size spare, a recently checked-over vehicle and proper caution for remote areas of the park, inexperienced desert hikers would be well advised to acquire some additional knowledge on trip planning, equipment, first aid, and map reading. An excellent resource for this is The Ultimate Desert Handbook by Mark Johnson.
Don't Go to Death Valley Without It.......2005-04-07
We picked up a copy of "The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley" and found this book to be a fantastic resource for our visit! The book is very comprehensive in nature, with detailed descriptions of drives along ALL the roads in the park. It turned out that during our visit in March 2005, a large number of the roads through the park were closed due to storm damage from this winter's record rains, so the book was truly a godsend in figuring out alternate routes through the park.
Another great feature is that the authors tell you pretty accurately the condition of the roads (most of the roads are unpaved), including such important details as washed out areas, how steep are the grades, and the like. We also really appreciated the details on what mining ruins were to be found at the end of the bumpy drives.
We found the information in this book to be very accurate and honest, helping us to decide what we wanted to see in our way-too-short visit to the park. This book is a great one-volume source for seeing the most when you visit Death Valley. Enjoy!
"Goodbye, Death Valley".......2004-03-04
That was what people have thought that the name Death Valley had come from. A settler who had enough of what this land had to offer. And upon his exit, he muttered those words. This is all a theory, but this book will take you into the past and give you an all-around trip though a beautiful land that most people portray only as a barren wasteland. With descriptive writing and great photos, this book is A MUST for all of those who want to make the trip!

Book Description
What's causing the deaths of desert bighorn sheep in Death Valley National Park? Wildlife veterinarian Olivia Landon has been called in to investigate. The plot thickens when her daughter, Ashley, is kidnapped by militants who mistake her for Leesa, a mysterious girl temporarily in the Landons' care. Tension builds to a spine-chilling climax when a showdown in the desert leads the family to a missile testing site and the key to what is killing the sheep.
Customer Reviews:
Ryan's review.......2006-11-03
I think this book was very good. It had a lot of action and suspense. In my opinion this book is one of the best in the series because of all the drama and suspense.
This book is about Jack, Ashley, and their parents going to Death Valley National Park and they bring a girl named Leesa Sherman. They all go to a place named Skidoo which is suppose to be a Ghost Town. Ashley tells them this freaky story about a man who got hung because he killed a lot of people. He was buried in a mine shaft. Jack gives Ashly a two-way radio and Ashley and Leesa go and look at some things before a sand storm comes. They see Leesa running toward them without Ashley and she said she lost her during the storm. They keep trying to contact her on the radio Jack gave her but there was no answer. All of a sudden they hear a voice come over the radio saying, "We have Ashley Landon and we are keeping her until Leesa Sherman is returned to us."
I recommend this book to a 11-13 year old or someone who likes mystery books.
Valley of Death.......2004-07-19
I liked this book because there was alot of action when Ashley was captured.I also liked in the end how Leesa went back with her mother and not to the Unit. This is a good book to read. If your interested in this book pick it up and start reading, especially if you like mysteries.

ASIN: 1930013140 |
Product Description
"Among the best-known of California's many short lines was the Yosemite Valley Railroad. Though several publications have explored aspects of this line, a comprehensive and profusely illustrated book has long been needed. Renowned author and modeler Jack Burgess has now filled this void. "In 1907, the completion of the Yosemite Valley Railroad revolutionized travel to Yosemite: the world-famous park could suddenly be reached in less than a day. Within a few short years, it was even possible for the long-distance traveler to reach the Park without leaving the comfort of a Pullman sleeper. The number of visitors to the Park continued to increase annually in these early years and the railroad advertised heavily to promote tourism even more to the unrivaled Valley. "The YV ran from Merced to El Portal at the entrance to Yosemite National Park, much of the route following the Merced River. Though passenger traffic to the Park was important, lumber mills and other industries along the line were major sources of business. The passenger and freight operations are all included in this book, along with numerous photos illustrating the on-line industries. "The fascinating story of this unique railroad is told by Yosemite Valley Railroad expert Jack Burgess and illustrated through more than 400 photos (including 43 color photos, some of them color slides taken by Al Rose before abandonment of the YV in 1945), 19 maps, and 26 scale drawings. Complete equipment rosters together with numerous timetables, postcards, tickets, and other memorabilia help provide additional insight into the railroad. The narrative is further highlighted with over two dozen anecdotes from railroaders who worked on the railroad over the years. The result is a highly informational and readable history of this wonderful railroad which, for 40 years, transported wide-eyed tourists to Yosemite." 372 pages, 8.5" x 11"; 400 photos; 45 maps and drawings, rosters, bibliography, index.
Customer Reviews:
Not just history, but very specific train details.......2005-05-09
Yosemite's natural history and wonders had become well known by the mid 1850s, but few tourists wanted to travel to the remote historic valley via horse: enter the train in 1907, which allowed visitors to reach the park in less than a day, fostering an increase in park appreciation which continues to this day. Yosemite Valley Railroad expert Jack Burgess began his study of the railroad in the mid-1960s as he searched for an appropriate prototype for his model railroad layout: his interest in modeling led to much more than a casual probe of the Yosemite Valley Railroad system, as the 400 black and white vintage photos, maps and illustrations packing detail into TRAINS TO YOSEMITE proves. Rail buffs will find well over 300 pages of detail pack in not just history, but very specific train details, from switching routines and classification lamps to relocated lines and bridges. It is this depth of information which is the mark of the model hobbyist - and which lends so perfectly to a complete, comprehensive coverage of the real thing. Yes, TRAINS TO YOSEMITE is a specialty item for rail transportation or California-specific collections: but such holdings will find it essential.
Incredible details and exhaustive research on the YVRR.......2005-02-22
This is the most comprehensive collection of photos and data on the Yosemite Valley Railroad yet published. The book is not merely a rehash of photos that you have seen over and over, but many entirely new photos...a lifetimes collection. Jack's excellent eye for details and dedication in reaching out to those who worked on the RR, lived in the community, or researched this road, make this book a real treasure.
