Book Description
Nature's Economy is a wide-ranging investigation of ecology's past. It traces the origins of the concept, discusses the thinkers who have shaped it, and shows how it in turn has shaped the modern perception of our place in nature. The book includes portraits of Linnaeus, Gilbert White, Darwin, Thoreau, and such key twentieth-century ecologists as Rachel Carson, Frederic Clements, Aldo Leopold, James Lovelock, and Eugene Odum. It concludes with a new Part VI, which looks at the directions ecology has taken most recently.

Engrossing and enlightening.......2005-11-23
I used to muse on the subject of environmentalism and why two seemingly opposed camps ("pro-environment" and "anti-environment"--though "anti-environment" could more fairly be termed "pro-development") think the way they do. This book answered many of my questions and started me thinking about more in-depth issues of environmentalism. The history presented is fascinating and, in some cases, appalling. I found myself thinking, "how could these people so eagerly destroy the environment that sustains them?", but at the same time the logic was right in front of me. I may not have agreed with it, but there it was.
The book is divided into six sections, which explore environmental thinking in chronological order: 1) Two Roads Diverged: Ecology in the Eighteenth Century; 2) The Subversive Science: Thoreau's Romantic Ecology; 3) The Dismal Science: Darwinian Ecology; 4) O Pioneers: Ecology on the Frontier; 5) The Morals of a Science: Ethics, Economics, and Ecology; 6) The Age of Ecology: Science and the Fate of the Earth.
This book was required reading for an environmental ethics class (something I think every college student should take), and I enjoyed reading it. We were asked to think about the points in the book in the context of 6 different frameworks: morals and ethics, religion, capitalism, the commons, science, and wilderness. I recommend that other readers do the same. Thinking about environmentalism from these different viewpoints gives it a different spin every time.
I never really considered myself an environmentalist, although I am all for living sustainably on the earth (within reason--some sustainability viewpoints are admittedly extreme). However, this book definitely shifted my opinions to those of a more environmentalist-like identity than I had before.
This review refers to the Second Edition (1994).
solid, informative, and clearly written........2004-03-26
This comment of Worster's from page 433 pretty much sums it all up:
"Whether we choose to learn from the past or not, the past is our most reliable instructor in reality."
He presents the supporting material for his case just as elegantly and firmly, throughout the book.
Good structure, sloppy execution.......1999-05-05
Donald Worster has written a gem of a book. It's too bad that he gets lost in his own selfconceit. Worster merely wants to say that all other ecological ideas are products of cultural conditions. Howver, his ideas are not. Worster is a master at structuring his points, and he is colorful at times. My favorite part, however (other than the connection of interdependncy to fascism) was when he misused his "In the begining was The Word" quote. "The Word," in the original Greek text of the bible, is actually "logos," not literal words of creeation. I had a hard time buying his schtick after reading that line.

Book Description
This wide-ranging investigation of ecologyâs past traces the origins of the concept, discusses the thinkers who have shaped it, and shows how it in turn has shaped the modern perception of our place in nature. Donald Worster focuses on the dramatic shifts in manâs view of the living world that have occurred since the eighteenth century, looking closely at the contributions of such figures as Linnaeus, Gilbert White, Darwin, and Thoreau, as well as those of the twentieth-century ecologists Frederic Clements, Aldo Leopold, and Eugene Odum. The author has written a new preface for this work, which was first published by Sierra Club Books in 1977.

Got Us Lost.......2006-06-29
This book has a great description of the history in the region, but if you want to use it to find restaurants, DON'T. This book got us lost each time we used it to find a restaurant they had written a review about. Twice, they listed restaurants that had closed over a year ago! The Rick Steve's book about Prague is infinitely better and it never got us lost because they update it!

A very helpful travel guide.......2006-02-21
I am planning a trip toi Prague and this book helps so much in my planning.Due to the difficulty understand the Schec langauge, the gu ide will be a great assistance re. hotels, restaurents, and sight-seeing,
Amazingly accurate, well-organized and the right level of detail.......2005-10-24
We loved this book while we were traveling because it didn't overwhelm us with too much detail, like Lonely Planet and gave us recommendations that we really came to trust. We just got back from Prague and the Czech Republic and used this book to take us beyond Prague to Czesky Krumlov to Pilsen and Karlovy Vary, not to mention some amazing castles, including Orlik and Karstejn and used this book to find hotels, restaurants and sites during our 1 week trip. We found that the book was amazingly accurate with its descriptions. For example, we ended up staying in a hotel in Pilsen that the book told us was clean, but had surly service - we found that was perfectly true! The woman at the front desk practically growled at us, but we completely expected it! The book told us that the castle at Orlik "never disappoints" and that was true - we had a wonderful time touring Orlik, and would probably never had visited had the book not recommended it. We were surprised at the level of accuracy that the book's recommendations provided throughout our entire trip. If you are a bit beyond the backpacker's approach to travel, this book is a great way to go. I highly recommend it.
Use Lonely Planet Instead.......2004-07-05
I read this book and then traveled to Prague with the information I thought I had absorbed. Frommer's Prague is incredibly innaccurate and is full of errors. To name a few, the times it lists for castles is incorrect as well as the location of several tourist spots. The guide assumes the train drops one off at the site, when it can lead one several towns astray from the actual location. Furthermore, in terms of times to destinations that guide makes it seem that only a few hours are necessary when one could spend an entire day getting to only one spot. This especially is true for Karstejn Castle and Krivoklat. Please make sure to print maps off the computer before you depend on this book (the book also lacks a great number of necessary maps for tourist spots). Prague and the Czech Republic are not difficult to navigate, but without a good guidebook with maps and relevant information, days and hours are wasted wandering, which leads to ruined adventures.

Customer Reviews:
Buyer Beware...............2003-12-02
After purchasing other Frommer's books and being happy with them, I was extremely disappointed with this one. Much of the information regarding operating hours, costs and locations was incorrect. Also, there were some other places that were omitted entirely. Fortunately, one of the people in my group had the Lonely Planet guide - otherwise we would have missed out.
User beware.......2001-10-30
Use this book with caution. Restaurant reviews are very helpful and the walking tours get you into the tourist parts of town. But don't trust the telephone/fax numbers. Of the three I tried, all were wrong. Overall, worth using though.
ATTENTION! ACHTUNG! ATTENZIONE! ATENCION! ATTENTION!.......2000-10-08
Do not, repeat DO NOT, trust any information found in this book if the correctness of the information is important to your safety or the successful completion of your travel. We trusted the statement on page 9 under ENTRY REQUIREMENTS, where it states that " Americans, British, Irish, Australians, New Zealand, and now Canadian citizens need only passports (no visas) for stays under 30 days." My wife, an Australian, was "disembarked" at the Zurich airport because she did not have a visa. The Czechs require Australians to obtain visas in their country of origin (the US in our case) and THEY MAKE NO EXCEPTIONS! Needless to say, our trip was ruined. There is absolutely no excuse for this kind of incompetent reporting of critical data, the edition we purchased was published in 2000, and so was our trip. The Czech visa policy has been in effect for years.
The best guide to Prague.......1999-03-19
Just returned from Prague, and this guidebook was by far the most valuable resource we had. Walking tours and restaurant reviews particularly valuable.

Wonderful!.......2006-04-30
I collect children's books, as well as literature about and from Kentucky. What a perfect addition to my library! I was mesmerized by the beautiful illustrations. I am waiting for a baby I know to get a little bigger as he still eats his board book pages, but when he can look at picture books like this one, I will get him his own copy!
Excellent Book for Classrooms!.......2003-12-02
This is a remarkable book that really helps with the Kentucky Unit required in the 4th grade. I am a 4th grade teacher and have used this book to illustrate and introduce concepts. Its best used a page at a time - not to be sat down and read to everyone. I cannot say enough about this book.
What a find!.......2002-12-06
I am a library media specialist from Kentucky and I have been waiting for a book like this for a long time. The illustrations are beautiful and the text is very informative and fun to read. My students really enjoyed hearing selections from this book.
