An excellent reference for your nature walks through unfamiliar territory.......2007-04-20
This book is an excellent reference book for the nature lover who isn't up to speed regarding the particulars. For each tree, there is a blowup photo of the leaves, a smaller one of the bark and a black and white sketch of the general appearance of the tree from a distance. There is also the English and scientific names and some textual explanation of the tree. This explanation is a paragraph description of the appearance, a paragraph on how to identify it and one sentence descriptions of the habitat and geographical range where it is found.
A great introduction for kids.......2006-11-11
Ok, this isn't the full blown Audubon Tree book(s), but at this price, what do you expect?
This and all the Pocket Guides are great stocking stuffers for kids, especially for those blessed with parents who think getting the latest Gameboy or Hero Clix is more important (hint hint, you know who you are).
As they get older, their interests will become more defined and you'll know what (more expensive/extensive) particular field guide(s) to buy them.
Yeah, it's cliche, but a child's mind *is* a terrible thing to waste.
I've bought all the Audubon Pocket guides more than once (kept a few for myself, yes they're that good) and I've only been disappointed with one (most of the photos were blurry). No, I won't say which one, as it may not matter to someone else (but I'm picky about that kind of stuff).
Hand them out to your nieces and nephews, and any other kid that can't tell an oak from a pine tree or quartz from slate or Pleiades from Orion or ... well, you get the picture.
They've thanked me later on(and actually meant it, lol) and they'll thank you too.
Small enough to use while backpacking.......2006-08-30
I like these small Audubon books because they are light and easy to use. The pictures are clear and the information is easy to read and use. They aren't as detailed as the bigger Audubon books, but then the larger ones are heavier and in a back pack, being light weight is everything.
Disappointed.......2001-07-11
Bought this book to take on walks/hikes. The first time out I could not find anything on two out of the first four trees of which I was not familiar!! Very limited coverage of any trees other than those we all know from everyday experience---rather a disappointment!!
A Handy Informative Guide for Trees.......2000-03-29
I bought this book because I was tired of only being able to identify a handful of the most distinctive trees. This small, colorful and easy-to-use guide was a godsend. It it paperback and can easily fit into a breast pocket, yet the full-page color photos of leaf shapes and sizes are adequate - even for a novice like me - to identify trees. It shows tree silhouettes, bark types and leaves and explains about various tree families to help us all be able to distinguish the trees from the proverbial forest! The information, organization and size of this book make it a "strong-buy" for anyone with an interest in "knowing" trees better!

This is a very good book, cool illustrations.......2002-01-15
I fount this a very well Illustrated book, the pictures are incredible, and I liked the way to find the tracks they are located int the top corner of the book so when you move quickly among pages you can easily find any track...
Considering that this is a pocket guide, it is very complete, I found it very well for beginners, because it is not complicated to locate and identify tracks.
tracker.......2000-02-26
I found this small inexpensive book a worthwile purchase. The drawings for tracks were't very informative, however pictures of the species are excellent. With the brief descriptions of the animals reads more like a pocket field guide than a tracking manual.

All That the Rain Pronises, and More.......2007-10-14
The Book is well worth buying, I have found it to be one of the best available. The information is very helpful, but some of the photos could be a little more clear. The companion book is more detailed and also worth buying; Mushrooms Demystified.
good guide and fun too.......2007-02-20
This might not be the first and only mushroom guide you would buy - especially if you do not live on the west coast. It is a great compact reference and David Arora is a true expert who also makes the information fun and accessible. I think everyone who gets past a few forays should have this guide in their pocket.
This Is My Favorite Mushroom Book.......2007-02-17
I have 30+ mushroom books. This one is the one I like most. It's fun to read and is small enough to carry with me on the mushroom hunting trips. In addition to the wonderful pictures, clear information, and useful tips, it has a lot of fantastic real-life mushroom hunting stories. This book is very practical and easy to read. It is a great book for people who love mushrooms.
Best in the West.......2006-11-08
This little book led us to some of the tastiest mushrooms
I have ever eaten. Easy to follow and the pictures are
superior. I have found that by using a variety of books,
one can zero in on the edibility of a given mushroom.
This book also is packed with great tips for the fungi
friendly.
A "hip" pocket guide.......2006-11-05
It's just what the title says. I recommend it as a take-along resource when you're out collecting or just out exploring. It has the humor and more in-depth info that makes Mushrooms Demistified a great book, but it's small enough to take with you. Great book!

Wagtails and Jackdraws.......2006-11-06
I went to Germany this past summer and saw many birds I could not identify. Upon returning I searched online for birding guides that covered Germany, and this one showed up many times as being recommended, so I bought it.
The guide is wonderful with lots of high-quality color illustrations and descriptions of birds and their geographical habitats by season, and for some birds includes stage of life. It covers North-West Europe with a focus on Britain and Ireland, so when I return to Europe I'll be sure to bring this guide!
Perfect size.......2006-03-22
This is a very nice field guide. I especially like the indexes on the inside of the front and back cover. All field guides should be like this. It sure saves a lot of searching in the alphabetical indexes and eliminates all the post it markers I use in my other field guides. Will be going to Britain in several weeks and looking forward to getting a few lifers. Not the most detailed of guides but perfect for traveling.
Pocket Guide to the Birds of Britain and North-west Europe........2001-07-27
I checked this book out of the library prior to a trip to London, and now I'm going to buy a copy for my library. This is such a well laid out book, and the perfect size for the field. The information on the covers is particularly nice, with black and white illustrations of members of all the families so that you can quickly determine where in the guide to look for details. This is very helpful because there are many unfamiliar birds there that don't fit into the categories of birds we're used to in the states. And right inside the front cover is a color-coded index to help you quickly get to the section you need. I also liked the interesting facts about the birds that you don't see in many field guides. If you need a guide to birds for this area, this is definitely the one to have!
Pocket Guide to the Birds of Britain and North-West Europe.......2001-06-16
I ordered this book for a trip to Northern Germany and really lucked out. I read previous reviews, liked the format and size and gave it a shot. It was perfect for my needs. I recommend it highly.
Please let them publish one for North America!.......2001-05-23
Before our vacation in Denmark this month, I purchased this guide and based my selection on the 2 previous reviews and its small size. Boy, did I get lucky! This is one great field guide! Not only is all the pertinent information for each species located on one page, but that one page is also full of all sorts of interesting items (such as behaviors and flight patterns), written and/or pictured. If the authors would compile a similar guide for our North American species, it would surely replace my almost-worn-out National Geographic (my previous favorite)!
Book Description
The classic key to identifying native trees of the Pacific Coast, updated to reflect changes in the names of trees since publication of the first edition. Identifies native trees, and some widely introduced or naturalized species, of the Pacific Coast region, from British Columbia to Baja California. In this edition, Latin names of trees that grow in California conform to the University of California's 1993 Jepson Manual, and more recent name changes. From the Finders series of pocket guides to native plants and animals of the U.S. and Canada; like all plant guides in the series, this book uses a dichotomous key format for accurate identification.

pocket guide.......2007-09-21
mis-ordered, i had meant to purchase the field guide to clouds, which has been renamed the weather field guide. there is some decent general information in this pocket guide, and i would recommend this book to 10-14 year olds. but if you are really interested in weather and cloud formations you want to buy the proper field guide which really isn't that much larger than this book, and contains a great deal more information and photographs.
Beautifully illustrated pocket reference for all!.......2004-07-13
This pocket book to weather can be used in the field for years, since it's reliability level is high for a first guide. The photographs are more spectacular and much easier to see. The background behind the cloud photos is also breathtaking. The "heap cloud" family is extensively covered here, coming out at more than 15 photographs in all! This will easily encourage an amateur meteorologist to delve into studying cloud formations and phenomenons. Once again, the material is geared toward amateurs and experienced users. There is an explanation beside the cloud type listing covering: Cloud significance, season, range, and local area abundance. Please heed that you must buy this before the advanced Audubon guides.
Pictures are very good, information too........2002-01-15
Well I consider that this is a very well illustrated book as well as all those from Audubon Society, pictures are impressive.
The information on the book is very useful, it is also very detalailed for a pocket guide, and I consider a good aspect the way to find clouds, is quick and you will easily learn to classify them.
Good Book.......1999-07-31
Nice pics. Nice info. Good boo
So easy to read! Such beautiful pictures!.......1998-07-11
This book is similar, though much more condensed, to the National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Weather. It has some of the most beautiful weather pictures I've ever seen! The text is also right next to its corresponding picture, making it very easy to use. The small size makes it perfect to carry along with you everywhere!

Very Helpful.......2001-01-20
This was a great book! It was helpful to me because im a duck hunter. It would also be great for other duck hunters who dont know their ducks too well. They show all kinds of ducks, and where they breed. It also shows lunes, geese, and even swans. This book is great for curious readers and also big time duck hunters.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent illustrations, very informative........2007-02-10
Color illustrations are terrific. Makes one want to dive into
the world of gemstones. The only thing I didn't like about the
book was that the writing was way too small. The print needed to
be a lot bigger for those of us who need it. Otherwise, great book.
Gemsone Identifications.......2007-01-16
I feel this is an excellent book to purchase now in learning as beginners, to identify gemstones. It is in color and has a lot of detailed information on each gemstone. I highly think you need this book in the beginning in identifying gemstones.
Plenty of color pictures.......2004-09-17
The next best thing to having the real thing is to have good pictures of the item. And this book is loaded.
Th book is well organized and has information from where to find the gems and pictures of their natural forms to ha to make the best cuts. We get chemical makeup and their history of trade.
An added plus is a section on organics such as pearl, shell, coral, and amber.
I am using this book to help determine what I am looking at on online auctions.

African Mammals Book.......2007-09-29
It is a good book...diagrams are detailed well and descriptions are good of the animals....good guide book for college classes.
If Kingdon or Estes say it, believe it !!.......2007-06-27
Excellent information if studying. Kingdon is an excellent source of CORRECT information when it comes to African animals.
The Best Guide for Field Use in Africa!.......2006-08-05
This compact little guide is a condensed version of The Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals by the same author. That book is easily the best overview of African mammals, with detailed info on each species/genus, but it is not really practical for use as a field guide (see my review of it).
This book contains the same illustrations arranged in a format that makes them handier for actual identification in the field.
It is very comprehensive, covering every single species of African mammals with the exception of bats, rodents, insectivores, elephant-shrews and hyrraxes, which are usually represented by one species for each genus. But every single genus is represented, and of rodents, every species of squirrel is dealt with separately.
Maps and brief info on distribution and ecology of each taxon is now to be found on the pages facing the illustrutions.
The latter are a mixed bag, as in the original work: while most are quite good, even excellent and life-like, others are quite awful, either showing animals with stiff, straight limbs/bodies as if drawn with a ruler (like the Crowned Monkey) or in highly unnatural positions (like the Potto with the limbs twisted out, or the Cheetah standing up like a circus horse).
All things considered, this is easily the best field guide to mammals of Africa, though for more in-depth information on each taxon, you may still want to have the original book in addition to this one.
