Targeted specifically to middle management..........2007-07-08
Middle management is one of the toughest positions in corporate America. You're expected to run things successfully, while often not having enough sway and power to implement your plans. A book that aims to remedy that is Ignited: Managers! Light Up Your Company and Career for More Power More Purpose and More Success by Vince Thompson. An excellent book that should be on the shelf of every manager...
Contents:
Introduction - Living in Quake Country; Base Camp - The Ignited Quiz
Part 1 - Get More Power: Action with Traction; The Manager's Universe; Leadership in Limited Space; Managing Your Emotions; The Deadly Lack of Empowerment Trap
Part 2 - Get More Purpose: Ignition Point 1 - The Process; Ignition Point 2 - The People; Ignition Point 3 - The Message; Ignition Point 4 - The Landscape; Ignition Point 5 - The Strategy; Ignition Point 6 - The Story; Ignition Point 7 - The Spirit
Part 3 - Get More Success: Selling From The Fulcrum; Your Own Sense of Balance
Index
The reason why people put themselves into "the middle" is to make a difference in the lives of their coworkers and the company in general. But it's not an easy road. Ignited starts with a quick quiz that will give you a general idea as to how your attitude plays out in relation to your job. Then the three parts of the book help you find your path to a more effective role in the company. Part 1 talks about general principles of management that might sound like common sense, but that often get lost in the midst of the battles. I really was struck by the effectiveness of the "universe mapping" exercise. It shows you who you are linked to in terms of your success. Following that up with an attempt at mapping your boss's universe can then give you the insight as to what you need to do to make them successful (and yourself in the process). Part 2 then gives you the tools you need to effectively run the areas that are uniquely yours as a manager... your people, your message, and so forth. The final part of the book then sums up the newfound power and opportunities you have as an ignited manager, and gives you the roadmap on how that new position and knowledge can be leveraged for your success and balance in life. By the time you've worked through the book and focused on the changes outlined, you should be infinitely more involved and effective in your position.
Rather than read yet another book on how a CEO leads, focus instead on reading something targeted to your specific situation and circumstances. This is that book.
A guide to management excellence.......2007-06-26
Ignited is a treasure chest overfilled and brimming with insights, tips, techniques, motivations, and inspiration for the people who are the backbone of organizations-- middle managers.
Ignited is an eminently practical book that lends itself to immediate use from word one. I recommend when you sit down to read the book that you have a highlighter pen, a number of bookmarks and some note paper-- this may not be formatted as a workbook, but you'll end up treating it as one and applying its advice as you progress through it.
The author, Vince Thompson, has many years in management and so writes from personal experience as well as education and research. His analyses, explanations, and suggestions all give you a sense of his having "been there" and confidence in his advice.
Thompson gives you a solid grounding in all the essentials of managing both up and down the organization and then shows how to leverage those essentials into formidable skills that ignite your management style, your organization, and your career. The essentials include understanding and applying the principles of networks and networking, team-building, access-gaining, self empowerment and leadership-- all from an uncommon perspective. He helps you learn to become a key (and highly effective) manager by harnessing the power of knowledge of organizational processes (what is done, when, why, how, and by whom) and people in or related to the organization (who does what, knows what, has what connections, has what power, etc.). He tells you why. He tells you exactly how. And, he provides clear and interesting examples and anecdotes to illustrate his points.
His own enthusiasm and excitement, paired with his knowledge-packed narrative, will ignite you.
How managers in "The Middle" can make a difference.......2007-06-12
In a remarkably thorough and informative Introduction, Vince Thompson observes that managers in what he characterizes as "The Middle" are "the connective tissue in their organizations. Only they have the ground-level expertise required for success, the links to people above and below them in the corporate structure, the insights into customer needs, competitive realities, and the organization's strengths and weaknesses." Thompson wrote this book for them but also for those to whom they report because, as he correctly insists, the potential contributions that managers in The Middle can make are too often ignored or under-valued. Thompson's book offers a better solution: "a way for [managers in The Middle] to stay within the corporation and begin making the kind of difference [they] want to make, taking back [their] businesses, careers, and lives in the process."
First, Thompson asks his reader respond to ten questions that comprise "The Ignited Quiz." The purpose of the responses is merely to suggest (rather than measure) to what extent the respondent is an effective and empowered manager in The Middle. In this context, I am reminded of what Ernest Becker suggests in his book, The Denial of Death. No one can avoid physical death but there is another "death" that can be denied: That which occurs when we become wholly preoccupied with fulfilling others' expectations of us, both in our personal lives and in our careers.
Thompson then carefully organizes the material that follows "Base Camp: The Ignited Quiz" within three Parts. First, he offers some basic tools for improving the thinking and behavior of managers in The Middle. Next, he provides seven "Ignition Points" that are keys to the unique value that managers in The Middle can create. Finally, in Part III, he explains how to create a balanced fulfilling life while earning a living. They are not mutually exclusive. The challenge is to understand what really is most important in one's life, then achieve and then sustain an appropriate balance of those values dreams, objectives, needs, interests, and obligations.
Of special interest to me is what Thompson has to say about what he calls "Quake Country," a land of perpetual change. "A place where companies merge, morph, rise, and fall at an ever-accelerating pace - where the only thing certain about the latest management buzz phrases - from `failing fast,' `coopetition,' and cannibalization' to `process commoditization,' `productive friction,' and `social networking' - is that they will be replaced by new ones tomorrow, each change leaving the essential business problems behind." Much of value has been said and written about the difficulties that C-level executives face when struggling to make sense of and then respond to such an environment. Indeed much has been said and written about the extent to which C-level executives (especially CEOs such as Dennis Kozlowski at Tyco, Kenneth Lay and Jeffrey Schilling at Enron, John Rigas at Adelphia, and Gary Winnick at Global Crossing) have exacerbated these difficulties. To the best of my knowledge, very little attention has been focused on those who manage in The Middle. Hence the importance of Thompson's book.
Here is a representative selection of Thompson's key points:
"The concept of Management Value Added (MVA) is based on a simple question that you should ask whenever you're making a decision about how to invest your time and energy: `What value does management add?' And how could your actions `add value' to any situation in business? That's right - by helping to meet your bosses' needs. The goal of MVA is to ensure that you are adding the value most important to your boss and company but also that you are always adding value in every situation." For example, managers must understand that if they are going to a meeting, they better be well-prepared to add value to discussions. Perhaps a better example would be a situation, what Bruce Bodaken and Robert Fritz characterize as a "managerial moment of truth," when supervisers have an opportunity to provide constructive criticism to a report-to that will be of substantial value to her or his performance and thus to the overall performance of the given organization.
"People come and people go, but processes - once developed, codified, and set in motion - tend to perpetuate themselves until someone deliberately changes them (which is often easier said than done). The sum of the processes defines what the company does and determines whether or not it is successful."
Citing Steve Mummulo (of US Search) as an example of a "Linkmaker," Thompson sums up the lessons to be learned. "When you're trying to get something done, use the proper channels first. Then, if the official procedures don't work and you find you must make an end run, do it in a politically sound way: Explain your reasons, get your boss's support, and keep people informed. Above all, show results. If you can make your network pay off, you'll be a hero. If you don't, you won't."
Citing Henry Mintzberg's concept of "emergent strategy," Thompson asserts that it is the strategic role of managers in The Middle "not simply to execute the strategy dictated by the top executives of the firm, but to supplement it with creative ideas, initiatives, and inventions of their own, driven by their first-hand knowledge of developments in the competitive arena, their own capabilities, and the openings for profit they perceive."
Given the organizational constraints that limit, often discourage, and sometimes even punish open and honest communication (especially "bad news"), how can those who manage in The Middle help their team members overcome barriers when tough corporate challenges demand clear and frank communication? Thompson suggests these tactics: "Acknowledging the constraints. Establishing an important business context and purpose. Recognizing the crucial role of the team member. Creating a separate space where it's safe to be open. Rigorously avoiding any form of recrimination or retribution for negative or `politically incorrect' statements."
This review is somewhat longer than I originally intended but I consider the issues that Thompson addresses to be so important, and his insights and counsel about managing in The Middle to be so valuable, that I felt obligated to include several quotations from his narrative. If I understand Thompson's ultimate objectives correctly, they include the following:
1. Help those who manage in The Middle to be more effective as "the connective tissue," as "the links to people above and below them in the corporate structure." This will strengthen their organization and, at the same time, expedite their career's development as well as nourish their personal growth.
2. Help those "above" (i.e. in senior management especially CEOs) to understand, appreciate, and then take full advantage of what managers in The Middle offer as "connective tissue" and "links" as well as their insights into customer needs, their awareness of competitive realities, and their understanding of the given organization's strengths and weaknesses.
3. Help those "below" the superviser to whom they report. As Vince Thompson correctly observes, "If you help your boss achieve success with his or her boss (not by going around your boss but collaboratively), you're really onto something. You're focusing on the issues that matter most at the highest levels of the company - the ones that'll get you the most recognition, the most power within the firm, and permission to pursue all your other dreams and goals."
As I finished reading this brilliant book, I was again reminded that organizations and even individual careers resemble vehicles in many different ways. Here's one example that seems especially relevant. Let's say you have just purchased a 2005 "cream puff" Mercedes with a full tank of gas, new tires and a new battery, tight breaks, and it has just been washed. Looks new. And of course, it has been properly inspected, registered, and insured. Then when you insert and turn the key, nothing happens. Nothing. The car isn't going anywhere and neither are you until the ignition problem is solved.
For many people, particularly those who "insert and turn a key" in their organization and/or in their career...and nothing happens, this will be the most valuable business book they have read in years.
Ignited will light your fire.......2007-05-14
Ignited has several good ideas to help a middle manager creatively navigate the corporate minefield. I found several of the ideas worth trying out, and discovered that I was doing a few things right but needed to modify some behaviors. This is a fairly easy read but you need to take time with each section to evaluate your behaviors and style in order to get the most out of it.
Good book. Buy it.
Got more out of Ignited than out of Good to Great and 7 Habits.......2007-04-30
Instead of going on and on about the same idea, Thompson introduces a new insight into challenges of management and provides actionable strategies on almost every page. The situations that he describes happen daily and the solutions are very practical.
A must read not only for managers but for everyone working in a team.

All New Chilton Books.......1999-12-04
These books are a joke! So mouch false information and so much useless information. Besides, its not even the Chilton company anymore! Just a name that the publisher is living on. If you want better information, go Mitchel or Motor Books.
Rehashed old info.......1999-11-16
A reader from Rochester,NY , August 3, 1999 My customer satisfaction with this book is very low. I deeply regret not heeding the comments of the online reviewers. Mainly because, I was raised on Chilton manuals and have never been disappointed until now. This manual is lacking in critical information for your most basic repairs. The layout is extremely confusing. Chilton has dropped many of it's covered mechanical repairs and I can find no information on chasiss electrical, or engine electrical. I have a ASS in Automotive Technology and a ASS in Electrical Technology. I am also ASE
certified. There is no way I can purchase another Chilton manual From Amazon.Com. I must now preview it at the bookstore first. If there is anyway I can replace this so called comprehensive manual with another I will and return this book.
A reader from East Norwood WI , May 5, 1999 I WAS SHOCKED ! Got my new " SHOP EDITION" Chilton book. What a joke. No Fuel Injection Diagnostics, No ABS Diagnostics, No Emission or Driveability Diagnostics, No Leveling Control Diagnostics, No Cruise Control Diagnostics, No Cooling Fan Diagnostics, No Traction Control Diagnostics, No Steering Column Exploded Views, No Dash Guage Diagnostics, No Diagnostic Flow Charts, No Ignition Troubleshooting Charts. I guess a "Shop" doesn't need this information.
A reader from dallas,Tx , April 15, 1999 Good reference tools, reasonably priced Gave me the info I needed and I didn't need to spend the $200 that Motor charges.
A reader from Wallingford CT , April 4, 1999 NOT FOR ANY TECHNICIAN I KNOW! How could they claim this book was wriiten with the technician in mind? I had used CHILTON PROFESSIONAL books for years. This poor excuse for a Chilton book has no information for a Pro or a "Backyard Mechanic". Other than some specifications and some generic procedures, there is nothing in this book of any value that you couldn't figure out on your own. Professional Technicians beware.
A reader from Rocky Mount NC , March 29, 1999 Wish I had heeded the reviews You guys are right. Chilton used to be synonomous with quality. What a useless product. Cars have become so complicated how could I have beleived Chilton could have covered so much information in so few pages. Well they didn't and couldn't so I would like a refund.
A reader from Clinton IA , March 24, 1999 Why is AMAZON marketing this book? In all the years as a weekend mechanic I have never seen a book with more sketchy information. They would have been better off focusing on one model than trying to cram every vehicle from 1995-1999 in one 1400 page book. The price is outrageous!

Not for tweakers.......2007-03-04
But if you want a solid understanding of how everything works, so you can fix it, this is the single best book on the subject. It answers many of those those arcane questions that crop up when you're really digging into a problem. As many of us have learned, the error code is NOT a recipe for a repair. It is simply the place to start.
As an example, my F-250 4.9 started stalling when warm. I had also noticed an occasional gassy smell & my mileage had dropped noticeably. It also failed emissions on NOx. Later, I pulled a code pointing to the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT). Since the problem only occurs when the engine is fully warm, I checked that strategy & saw that the ECT is indeed involved in managing engine performance. Probst describes the effect of a low or high reading, provides a table of expected voltage and resistance values at specific temperatures, and the pin locations on the connector.
If the ECT isn't the exact problem, there's enough meat in this book to figure out what is.
Last time I had to take my car into Ford, I found I knew more about oxygen sensor operation than the service writer. It saved me $150.
Best Book Ever Written About Fords EEC-IV Compuer System.......2006-03-24
No matter what you want to do with the Ford EEC-IV computer (88-93) this is the book for you. This is a very indepth book that dosent just tell you how to do somthing but it also shows you why it does what it does and why it will do somthing else if you mess with it. He explains how everything works, from the sensors to the computer and then to the acutators, he explains how the work together and he writes very clearly so it is easy to understand and to put into action.
Best Bang for the Buck!.......2005-09-17
If you have questions, or just need a very good understanding of the Ford EEC-IV Fuel Injection systems, this is the book for you. Don't waste your time or money on any other book. This one explains theory, real life problems, and the methods for tracking down a malfunction and correcting it. Also includes what is the best way to go about improving performance, and making the system adapt to performance improvements.
Not what I had expected!!.......2003-03-10
After reading the reviews on Amazon and other sources I got the impression that Mr. Probst's book was "THE BOOK" to read for modification of the EEC-IV system on my Ford Truck.
I was very disappointed. 95% of the book was nothing more than a SIMPLIFIED discription of each component in the Ford and Mazda engine control system. Mr. Probst very strongly implied that people should not modify their engine control system.
I found Mr. Jeff Hartman's book "Fuel Injection: Installation, Performance Tuning, Modification" much more informative for technical information.
Hats off to Mr Probst !!!.......2002-12-13
This book is topps! Mr Probst uses a friendly, easy to read format. I am now plagued with two problems on my truck, and thanks to this book, I understand quite a bit more. I am a do it yourselfer, self taught, and this book brings things to light. This has given me the tecnical data I need, as where other books are unclear or leave you hanging. This is not a book by any means, it's an investment.
Raise my rent, put another shrimp on the barbie mate, and thank God for simplicity!!

Excellent Start .........................................2007-09-15
Lady Beware was very interesting in the beginning but slow in many parts.
It is not a page-turner, but if you like Jo Beverley probably you will like this one.
But, Beware of this romance if beautiful love scenes are important to you because there is just one love scene and it is very mild.
jayinfl.......2007-09-06
I just loved this book. I loved all the Rogues but this one and Dare's story (To Rescue a Rogue) was my favorites. You never know what's going to happen next in this book. I laughed out loud at several times and will surely add this one to my "keepers". If you haven't read all of the Rouges, you need to definitely need to start from the beginning!
A sensual delight with more than a dash of intrigue.......2007-08-11
A brilliant book in the Rogues series, raises the bar to another level. This book is packed with drama, romance and sensual delight, the dark and damaged male character and a brave and courageous heroine combined with the evil threat to them both makes a dynamic mix.
This book is so good you have to read it again soon!
Loved it.......2007-07-27
I loved this book. This was the first book in the series that I have read so now I need to go back and get the others.
Another great read from Beverley.......2007-07-20
Good characterization and fast-moving plot! Also, plenty of romance without being too graphic. I really enjoyed this one!

The story that Jo Beverley fans have waited so long for.........2007-08-11
The last of the wonderful Rogues series and delivered to the same high standard. Wonderful intrigue and sensual romance that captures the reader in the first pages and holds you entralled until the very last. The book comes to life in the readers mind with images of the characters and the setting, the scenes are so vivid it is like watching a movie. This book brings together the final story that links earlier books with the bonus of a delightful view of favourite character's lives in later years.
To Rescue a Rogue.......2007-03-13
I loved this book & was very pleased to finally know Dare's story. I also loved the way all of the rogues were woven in to help - as usual. I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of the Rogue's stories so far & am pleased to hear that they are not finished yet.
Interesting idea, but where is the plot? *Spoliers*.......2007-03-07
This book started off remarkably well. Mara St. Bride starts off sounding like an intriguing woman/child who is marked by trouble simply because of her Ademar hair. Dare's early rescue is touching and you can feel yourself grow griddy in anticipation of a good story. Then a hero struggling with opium addiction-wow, all right. Uncharted waters, I'm in....but then...the author seem to have forgetton about a small detail called A PLOT. Nothing happens in this book. The main conflict are fighting rumors. That's it. How we combat this rumor? How do we clear that rumor? Are you kidding me? Where is the action and intrigue that was promised in the first chapter? And heaven forbid if you haven't read any of the other Rogue books. There are literally chapters after chapters talking about people you have no idea who they are-nor do you care. Most of this book is just a giant reunion party from other characters from other books. They had their book-don't clog this one up. I don't care about Blanche being accepted by the ton-I don't know her-I didn't read that book-I want to know more about Dare...and surprisingly other than his addiction-you don't really get to know him. You don't get to know Mara either. Other than she decided in Chapter two that she was going to marry the hero and there were no obstacles in this book preventing her from her getting what she wanted. I thought Dare would have put up a great fight against her charms because he was an addict and didn't want to ruin her future. Nope. He loved her too and sure I'll marry you. That's it. The rest is just watching them literally talk about rumors and who said what. For a brief moment in the third act, Beverly realized there needed to be some kind of dramatic moment and introduces Delphie's possible mother and for about twenty pages things picked up again--Dare might actually marry someone else. Alright! Finally some action-but no...that frizzled rather easily, too. Berkstead was downgraded to a joke for no reason, just a loon for loon sakes. After the brief drama with the children-they exit stage right-never to be seen again-even in the epilogue. Yeah, he was really in love with those kids. Sheesh. Whatever happened to consistency? By the middle of the book I was tired of the Ademar hair coming up-it was cute at first, but I didn't see anything that warrant people to keep bringing it up. After a while I started a drinking a game and took a shot every time someone mentioned the hair. Nice way to end the night with a buzz. I also wanted Dare and Mara to finish the blasted book they parley with-why was this even mentinoned-oh, to eat up pages. However, after it's all said and done, Beverley's talent still shines through. She is a talented writer, she however was more in love with her research on opium addiction than she was in actually developing a story with a plot. Overall, just okay.
disagree.......2007-03-03
disagree with most recent reviews. if you want a 'bodice burner' - this book is not for you. it is a very compelling story about overcoming addiction. OK - so the title should indicate that dare rescued himself, and mara should be older than 18, but the rest wil chime a cord with anyone who has tried to overcome addiction (in my case - cigaretts).
KUDOS to jo beverley - this is a great book.
To Rescue a Rogue.......2007-01-02
Jo Beverly books are usually very enjoyable, but I could not finsih this one. The characters are lovable, but nothing truly interesting is there to grip the reader. Conversations and the thought processes of the lovers are juvenile and underdeveloped. I wanted to like this book and attempted 3 times to finish it. I finally gave up and read the ending to stop torturing myself. Don't judge Jo Beverly by this book. Most of her works are very enjoyable. Guess one can't expect magic every time.

Not enough early Bronco info.......2001-12-28
This is the second repair manual that I purchased that covers the '66 to '77 Bronco, as well as others. The first was the Haynes Pick-ups & Broncos 1973 thru 1979, and I can say without a doubt that the Chiltons manual is far superior. However, it still tends to concentrate on the '78 and later Broncos. I have a '76, and while it gives relatively detailed instructions for the later models, it usually only gives vague instructions for the early trucks, or omits them altogether. It's a handy reference, but not sufficient for more involved work or restoration. Your best bet is still the factory service manual.
