Customer Reviews:
Good technical key.......2000-05-09
This is an excellent key for trained botanists (or very knowledgable amateurs) who want to identify the flora of the Blue Ridge Mountains of the southeast United States. However, it is not a book for the untrained, casual observer of wildflowers. The dichotomous key is easy to follow, though I wished the habitat descriptions were more detailed. The lack of illustrations is distressing -- sometimes a picture IS worth a thousand words! However, I appreciate that illustrations are expensive and would have increased the size of the book. It is easily carried in the field -- always a plus.

Wonderful story!!.......2007-08-24
After visiting this area in San Francisco, I just had to get this book! It's a wonderful primary-level story for my first graders (read-aloud).
One interpretation of the life of a tree.......2006-03-07
This book does a decent job showing how a giant sequoia grew for more than 2,000 years only to have a large tunnel carved out of the base for joy rides, causing it to topple over and die. But the book's take on history has a Christian bent, telling us how old the tree was when Jesus was born, when the Christians were being persecuted by the Romans, and when the Christian Crusades were being carried out - a focus you might want to take into consideration if you are looking for educational books about nature.
A Wonderful Book About the Giant Sequoia.......2001-07-10
This is a Wonderful book about a giant Sequoia Tree in California. The book is beautifully illustrated and tells of the beginning of life from a small seed, to the over 2000 years of life the giant tree must endure. From a small seed taking life, a "Time Line of World History" is also displayed along the bottom of each page. We found this book originally in a bookstore at the Sequoia National Park Visitors in California. Although this book is intented for younger children, it has an underlying message for adults. My children, and my family enjoy reading this short story over and over again.

Customer Reviews:
Photo of Yosemite Indian Chief is Captain John of Yosemite-Mono Lake Paiutes.......2006-02-25
Loved most of the book. I loved how Mr. Johnston writes that the first people of Yosemite were Paiutes, but then writes they became Miwoks, then back again to Paiutes? If the first Indian people of Yosemite were war like Paiutes, then it turned to peace-loving Miwoks, then back to war like Paiutes it is kinda odd? Maybe because they were always Paiutes. The Yosemite National Park Service has been trying to pass off the story that Paiutes and Miwoks were friendly with each other. That was false. In fact the Miwoks were scared of the Mono Paiutes and were the ones who named the Ahwahnees "Yosemites" which in their language Yosemite meant "The Killers". The Miwoks were afraid of them and never entered Yosemite Valley until after the death of Chief Tenaya when they went to work for whites in the park. Hank Johnston has a photo of a Native American chief he and the Yosemite National Park Service don't recognize in his book. Under his photo it has something like "Unknown Historic Chief of Yosemite". That man was Yosemite-Mono Lake Indian Chief Captain John of Poko-Tucket. Yet the Yosemite National Park Service never knew that the historic chief after Chief Tenaya was a Paiute chief? People interested in reading the real history of the Native Americans of Yosemite should also read Lafayette Bunnell's book about the Yosemite War. He was one of the two men to meet and write about Chief Tenaya and wrote that Chief Tenaya was the founder of the Paiute Colony of Ahwahnee and that he spoke Paiute, not Miwuk. In fact there is not ONE mention of the word Miwuk, Mewo or Miwok in the whole book. Yet there are many, many mentions of the Mono Paiute people throughout the book as being the primary group of Chief Tenaya's band of Inidans. The other person wrote that Chief Bautista of the Miwoks called the Ahwahneechees or Yosemite Native American Indian people the "Monahs". Which is another word for Mono Paiute. So in conclusion the Native Americans of Yosemite were Paiutes. The Indian people who roamed Yosemite. This is a good book, but needs improvement. Great photo of Native American Yosemite Indian chief CAPTAIN JOHN OF THE YOSEMITE-MONO LAKE PAIUTES.
The Yosemite Grant.......2002-10-24
An excellent treatment of this period in Yosemite's history. Fun to read, gives detailed information, is indexed, and the sources are sited! Photos are well done and informative. Students at the fourth and fifth grade level can read and understand the text.

Book Description
Geared toward tourists traveling to New York, but appropriate for residents as well, this book is an easy-to-use, nuts-and-bolts guide to enjoying theater in New York City. Lively and far more in-depth than a general tour book, it tells travelers how to pick a show, how to buy tickets, the best times to see shows, how to get tickets for shows that are sold out, how to get refunds in the event a trip is canceled, how to spot scalpers, and what to do if the show closes before a show date. Entire sections are devoted to discount tickets, how to use the subway and stay safe in New York City, where to eat, where to stay, and much more.

The Back Stage Guide To Broadway is a no-nonsense guide packed with basic etiquette considerations, questions-and- answers, and general advice specifically for New York City theatre-goers, whether they are residents or tourists. A Front-Row Guide to Broadway.......2005-08-03
If you are planning a trip to New York City and would like to see a Broadway show but are looking for the best way to pick a show and obtain discounted tickets to overpriced productions, I can't think of a more helpful guide to the process than The Back Stage Guide to Broadway, by Robert Viagas.
Even for the native New Yorker and longtime theatregoer, there is much useful information in this practical primer, which also includes tidbits of Broadway lore and New York trivia as well as tips for the tourist eating in, staying in and getting around Manhattan's theatre district -- a black-and-white foldout map of which is in the back of the book.
If the undue policing isn't too much of a drag on the theatre experience, the prospective visitor to the Times Square area looking to save time and money can only hope that, despite some factual, grammatical and typographical errors, this handy pocket guide will be around and revised for years to come.
Book Description
Originally published in 1847, History of the Conquest of Peru, a companion volume to William H. Prescott's masterly History of the Conquest of Mexico, continues his vivid chronicle of Spanish exploits in the New World. The book's commanding vision of Pizarro's tumultuous overthrow of the Inca empire has secured its reputation as a classic in the literature of Latin American history.
------"History of the Conquest of Peru represents an author's triumph over his materials," observed Donald G. Darnell, one of the historian's several biographers. "Prescott exploits to the fullest any opportunities for dramatic effects that history might provide him. . . . If there is one [distinguishing] feature of the Conquest of Peru . . . it is the portrayal of the Spanish character, that striking fusion of courage, cruelty, pride, and gallows humor. . . . We seem to be overhearing dialogue and observing firsthand the interaction between the Spaniards as they struggle for control of an empire. . . . Although Peru lacks a noble protagonist . . . it is still an immensely readable history. The description of the Inca civilization, particularly its wealth, the precise explanation of the cause of the conflict between the conquerors, and the depiction of the Spanish character--these together with the careful research, the sheer abundance of anecdotes, and the exploitation of primary materials all contribut
e to the history's continuing popularity."

But little is told of Francisco's early years, and that little not always deserving of credit. According to some, he was deserted by both his parents, and left as a foundling at the door of one of the principal churches of the city. It is even said that he would have perished, had he not been nursed by a sow.3 This is a more discreditable fountain of supply.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding! Just like being there!.......2007-01-05
The Inca HUAYNA CAPAC (died in 1525 ad) had two heirs to the throne. ATHAHUALLPA (to whom he left the northern part of the country, with the capital of Quito), who was not from a mother of Inca blood, though she was the Inca's favorite; and HUASCAR, son of his lawful wife and sister, the legitimate heir to the crown. Huascar received the southern part of the country, with the capital Cuzco.
After the Inca died, the two brothers precipitated Peru in civil war; Athauallpa won. Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, Francisco Pizzarro captured Atahuallpa; his subjects were utterly disheartened at this sacrilege. Remember the fascinating episode of Atahuallpa sitting on the ground and the Spanish horseman approaching him until the horse was very close to the Inca's face; though Atahuallpa had never seen a horse before he did not flinch. However, some of his retinue were scared and pulled back. The Inca had them killed the same day for showing fear and dishonoring themselves. During his time in captivity the Inca had his brother Huascar killed. Atahuallpa was put to death by the Spaniards even though he filled a room with gold from all over the country as a ransom for himself and his familiy. After being pressured, he embraced the Christian faith right before being put to death; instead of being burnt alive, he was garroted.
Atahuallpa's general Chalcucima was burnt on the stake and Quisquis was killed by some of his own men who were tired of fighting against the Spaniards. Manco Inca was then crowned new ruler of the Incas as a puppet of the Spaniards. However, after some time he managed to escape and to live in freedom for a long time in Cajamarca.
Juan Pizzarro died wahile storming the citadel of Cuzco. Almagro and Pizzarro began a civil war. Almagro was captured and put to death (garroted in prison).Hernando Pizzarro, upon returning to Spain, was imprisoned for twenty years in a dungeon and released in 1560. He died at the age of 100. Followers of Almagro assassinated Francisco Pizzarro (1541) and started a feud against the Pizzarros. The son of Almagro was captured and behaded as well. Manco Inca was assassinated by a group of Almagristas whom he had sheltered in Cajamarca (they were afterwards all slain by the Incas). A feud erupted between Gonzalo Pizzarro and the viceroy Blasco Nunez. They went to war and the viceroy was captured and killed on the battlefield. Pizzarro proclaimed himself master of Peru.Pedro de la Gasca was sent to Peru in 1545 to straighten things up, on behalf of the emperor Charles V. He was a very good cleric and a good administrator. The offer of surrender and of pardon which he extended to Gonzalo Pizzarro was turned down. War erupted between the royalists and Pizzarro. Carbajal was an old brave and cruel general who fought on the side of the Pizzarros. He was captured and executed; same fate befell Gonzalo (1550). Prescott, who wrote in the 1800s without ever setting foot in South America, tells all these stories in a very captivating way. He is never dull, always exciting and a pleasure to read! (See also his History of the Conquest of Mexico)
great gift for old guys.......2004-05-18
I read this one while traveling around Peru and the local experts confirmed the accuracy of Prescott's 150-year-old writings about Inca culture. Many of the most important actors in the book were surprisingly old considering the hardships that they endured. For example, Pizarro himself was 60 when he started heading down towards Peru through terrible storms in wooden boats, often getting stranded in mosquito-infested jungles without food for months at a time. He was 65 by the time he actually conquered Peru. One of the Pizarro family's most effective generals in their fights against other Spaniards was 80-84 during the period of these civil wars.
This book makes a great gift for anyone traveling to Ecuador or Peru and for anyone over the age of 60.
Somewhat boring.......2000-11-13
There's a lot of information here but the book is often slow and dull and too wordy and pretentious for my tastes. Less is more.
A Great History Book!.......2000-03-25
A wonderful book! It reads like great fiction but the events aren't fiction-- they actually happened! This book kept me captivated, I couldn't put it down! Prescott does a marvelous Job!
Spellbinding account of an incredible piece of history.......1999-10-09
The conquest of the mighty Inca empire by a small contingent of Spanish adventurers, and their subsequent civil wars fought for control of the region, is a story so dramatic and improbable that it's hard to believe it actually happened. Prescott's artistic style, meticulous attention to detail, and brilliantly structured narrative bring out all the drama and excitement. Unlike many histories, this work has nothing about it that is tedious or dry--particularly remarkable since Prescott never visited South America and developed his sweeping account exclusively from literary sources. The author's ability to reconstruct the attitudes and motivations of the key characters gives the reader a much deeper understanding of the events. Before reading the book, I knew next to nothing about the Incas or the settlement of the region. Upon finishing it, I felt as though I'd received a thorough (and most enjoyable) schooling.

5 Stars.......2001-05-08
A very readable book for young adults about the Spanish Conquest of Peru. Marrin describes in vivid detail the daily life of the Incas before the Spanish arrived. A warlike people, the Incas valued toughness, courage and obedience to authority. They were not strangers to capital punishment or torture. Like the Aztecs, they practiced ritual human sacrifice to appease the many gods they worshipped. Although their society was highly organized and technologically advanced, they were not prepared for warfare on European terms. When Pizarro arrived, he kidnapped their leader and held him for a ransom of silver and gold. Without their leader to give them instructions, the Incas were helpless to launch a rescue mission; they had been trained to obey orders, not to think for themselves. For many years the Incas made attempts to resist Spanish rule, but in the end, Spanish greed, weapons, cruelty and disease overtook them. A sorrowful yet valuable account of the Spanish impact on the New World.

The Pizarro Tragedy.......2001-01-18
This by far is the best work written on the Pizarro Family as a whole. I am glad to see more information written on Gonzalo, Hernando, and Juan Pizarro. Before this book was written most people did not fully understand who Francisco and his brothers were basically about. This book perfectly illustrates who they were and the situations surrounding their fate.
