4 out of 5 stars Excellent text and photos in this brief book.......2007-07-11

I agree with the previous reviewers: I carried this book to the Galapagos and found it a super companion. It isn't comprehensive -- and a few additional pages of IDs and photos might be desirable -- but it covers all of the essential natural-history topics: geology/volcanoes, history, fish, birds, mammals, turtles & iguanas, geography and so on -- and the photos and text are excellent. Indeed, the text is what sets it apart; there are short, interesting discussions of many of the features that are exceptional to the islands, so without any deep study you come away with some appreciation of what you have seen. Finally, in addition to the good chapters mentioned by other reviewers, there is an excellent chapter for planning your trip, which details what you will see where. It is amazing that so much good stuff was fit into this thin book. Take it with a more comprehensive treatment if you want the name of everything you see (or ask your guide).

5 out of 5 stars Galapagos Wildlife, 2nd:A Visitor's Guide.......2007-03-27

Small enough to bring with me, but comprehensive enough to be helpful giving a good overview of the habitat and wildlife of the Galapagos. Pictures good as are descriptions of the islands and conservation.

3 out of 5 stars Good to superficial guide, depending on your interests.......2002-12-05

Having visited the Galápagos and planning my return, I can say this introductory booklet (140 pages) is a reliable for people who want an overall idea of the ecology and want to identify some of the most prominent wildlife they are likely to encounter - it is easy to understand, has good information, decent photos of the main players and illustations of the commonest landing sites. For you, this booklet rates three stars for clarity, comprehension level and lightness in your backpack, but it fails next to Andy Swash and Rob Still's more comprehensive and better illustrated "Birds, Mammals and Reptiles of the Galápagos Island".

For those who want a more in depth knowledge of the Galápagos and their wildlife, or are traveling to some of the more remote sites or the northernmost islands: you will feel short-changed and wish you had purchased more comprehensive guide(s), so you can identify all the critters you will possibly observe and learn much more about their habitats and behaviors, climate and cvlimate zones, etc. For those travelers (birders, nature buffs, divers, etc.), this booklet rates a generous three stars for its relatively topical treatments.

Choose your guidebooks according to your interests and skills. And go there, walk softly and leave nothing. Visiting should have as little impact as possible, and in my opinion when done properly does help protect these wonderful islands of biological diversity from rampant pirate fishing, oil spills and short-sighted political stewardship. Our "tangibilitized" interest is the only one the Ecuadorian government- at least up until now- has responded to.

5 out of 5 stars Galapagos Wildlife.......2001-12-06

I just came back from the Galapagos and found David Horwell's book indispensable. It is a very readable and concise introduction to the flora and fauna of the Galapagos islands. Beautiful photographs. Very informative. Easy to carry around and refer to. I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in the Galapagos islands.

4 out of 5 stars Travel size Galapagos.......2000-01-18

This relatively small book on the wildlife of the Galapagos Islands is packed with information and pictures. The author has gone to a great deal of trouble to condense a vast amount of data into a handbook for the traveller, without sacrificing essential information, clarity or accuracy. Not only does it cover the wildlife that the visitor is most likely to encounter, it also gives a succinct history of the islands. Working in the Galapagos Travel Industry, and having considered many similar books for pre-trip briefing and ready reference while in the islands, this is the book I would recommend.

3 out of 5 stars More of a checklist than an explication.......2003-01-27

The subtitle gives you an indication that this is not exactly a reading experience, but a guidebook during your actually sojourn. While it contains some useful pre-trip information, Stephenson concentrates on detailing the flora and fauna that are on each island, and their approximate locations, in a format that is almost like a checklist (or, for the birders out there, a lifelist). Stephenson is knowledgeable, and her information accurate as far as I can tell, but there's really no savoir faire here, and there's the rub. If I had only this to base my foreknowledge of the islands, I'm not so sure I'd be so excited about going. Luckily, there's other books that are better at capturing the uniqueness of the islands and their place in history and our world today.

4 out of 5 stars Good information but a little outdated.......2007-08-11

A very useful book to take with you to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. However, some of the information is a big outdated. We went took a Galapagos 7 day cruise with a company that isn't even listed in this book. It was the best vacation we had ever gone on - highly recommended! It was on the Athala w/ Columbus Travel. Still, the book is a good source of information.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Travel Companion.......2007-04-20

This book was invaluable during my trip to the Galapagos. Unlike many guidebooks that contain out of date info, this book was current and a nice little reference book for both trip planning and island exploring.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this one........2007-02-17

This "guide" to the Galapagos contains long, boring chapters on tour companies, logistics (including insightful advice such as "bring lots of film" and "don't drink the water"), how to take photographs, and mainland Ecuador. There is a short chapter on Galapagos wildlife. Mr. Boyce owns Galapagos Travel, a tour company specializing in trips to the Galapagos. It is obvious that Mr. Boyce wrote this book for two reasons: (1) to establish himself as an "authority" on the Galapagos, and (2) to sell a copy to everyone who gets on one of his boats. Don't waste your money on this one. (I can't recommend his tour company, either.) If you are in the market for a good guide to the Galapagos, I highly recommend Michael Jackson's authoritative Galapagos: A Natural History Guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guide.......2007-01-12

Booked a trip to Galapagos Islands...this book has been a great source of information on what to bring, what to expect, how to photograph wildlife, etc. Although, we had already booked our trip when we received the book, the section on "planning" your trip or choosing the tour company seemed like a great resource for someone doing initial research.

4 out of 5 stars A fine book with some minor flaws.......2006-12-08

I was given this book as gift prior to a diving trip to Galapagos Islands in Nov 2006. I brought it along, as we would be visiting 4 islands during our liveaboard's journey. It was a good companion piece and I enjoyed reading Boyce's background on the basic animals you are likely to observe (sea lions, frigate birds, etc.) and the history of the islands. He mentioned that a sea lion was likely to be guarding the steps to the landing pad of South Plaza Island and that was the case when we visited!
He repeatedly mentions that one should not mix a diving trip with a land trip; I disagree with this opinion as we really enjoyed the variety of our trip (the scuba diving here is superb). He also does not recommend bringing a tripod, as it would be unfeasible to use on the trails. I found my tripod fairly indispensable for getting sharp photos of the iguanas and sally footed crabs and never a problem to use on land, so you may want to ignore this advice. Other than that, it was a useful guide for your Galapagos visit, truly an amazing place to visit!

Book Description

Since its creation in 1968, the Galápagos National Park has been considered by UNESCO as one of the jewels of the planet. Long regarded as a mysterious and desolate archipelago, this wildlife paradise is a true showcase of evolution in action. In recent years, the newly developed Marine Reserve fulfils the ultimate purpose of the National Park Service—protection and conservation of the region, following decades of abuse by illegal fishing.

This guide describes the rich human history, the geology and origin of the islands, the "El Niño" phenomenon, the amazing natural history, villages and visitors' sites, and provides insights into the regions' fascinating residents—sea birds, endemic land birds, prehistoric reptiles, playful sea lions and the incomparably enchanting underwater world. 180 color photos, 70 maps.

    Book Description

Mysterious, remote, and home to many strange and marvelous creatures, the Galapagos archipelago is a bird watchers' paradise. Here one can find penguins on the Equator, the flightless cormorant, the renowned finches who played a role in Charles Darwin's theories of evolution, and many other species, some found nowhere else in the world. In Galapagos Diary renowned illustrator Hermann Heinzel pairs with wildlife photographer Barnaby Hall to capture in words and images the stunning birds and other wildlife of the Galapagos Islands.
The first half of the book provides an overall tour of the islands, describing in words, illustrations, and photographs the range of habitats and wildlife to be found there. The authors highlight the strange behavior and breeding strategies of the archipelago's land and sea birds with alluring and often amusing images.
The second half of the book is a detailed field guide with sketches as well as finished paintings, photographs, and maps. Galapagos Diary contains vibrant images and informative text on every page, along with detailed and highly descriptive field notes, moving this volume beyond conventional field guides. Hermann Heinzel's enthusiasm and skill shine through in these beautifully written notes on all the Galapagos birds including the extremely rare and endangered Dark-rumped Petrel and the Mangrove Finch.
Concluding the book is a checklist of all the birds so that bird watchers and natural history enthusiasts visiting this magnificent island archipelago can record their personal observations. Armchair naturalists alike will thrill to the vivid illustrations of the unusual creatures the inhabit these islands, and to the engaging and insightful text that transports us to the Galapagos, once known as the "Enchanted Isles."

    4 out of 5 stars A must for a bird watchers library.......2007-05-12

Heinzel and Hall have as the title suggests provided a diary with the last 100 pages being hand written notes and sketches of the birds encountered on their travels on the Galapagos Islands. The first 158 pages are rich in photographs of the birds found on the islands in their natural habitat. Photographs of some of the other animals found on the islands are included but the major focus of the book is the birds.

5 out of 5 stars Poor quality pix? "Busy" layout?? C'mon, this is well done!.......2006-03-20

I couldn't believe the panning review below. The pix are great in this colorful, beautifully laid-out book. Scenic shots (Galapagos is not the Riviera) alternate with close-ups of wildlife, maps, and colored paintings/sketches of the inimitible wildlife. "Busy" for some, packed with value for most. A great resource! The print *is* a bit small -- this book could well be republished in coffee table sized format....

1 out of 5 stars Very Bad Book.......2001-09-01

I strongly recommend not buying this book.
Visually it is a mess. The print is very small, the photographs are generally of poor quality and the layout of the pages are too busy.
The text is essentially a diary and may be of interest to the people who took the trip, but it is not well written. Although there is good information here and there you have to wade through a lot of boring text to get to it.

5 out of 5 stars A BIRD BOOK FOR "ALL".......2000-12-30

"The Galapagos Diary" is a delightful book. It has two levels of reader focus. The "top" level of focus is targetted to the reader who desires to relax and see birds in their environment. It contains "portraits" of the bird population featuring photographs by Barnaby Hall. It appears to be designed for relaxation and enjoyment as opposed to detailed study. The second level appears to be intended for the "student." It uses a unique combination of photographs and sketches to present the characteristics of the Galapagos' birds, their actions, and their environment. The two-level focus of the volume makes the book a desirable gift, because it targets a wide range of readers with varying backgrounds, interests, and ages. You don't need to know how to spell ornithologist to enjoy it.

    5 out of 5 stars Remarkable Book.......2000-12-30

Galapagos Diary was one Christmas present I couldn't seem to put down. Although I have never visited the Islands and have no special interest in wildlife, I found the pictures remarkable and the text compelling. I had no idea such unusual creatures inhabited the Galapagos Islands. The Blue Footed Boobies (now, really, who comes up with these names?) are my favorite with Great Frigatebirds coming in a close second. The book's young photographer, Barnaby Hall, is incredibly talented for his age--he looks to have been around 15 when he took these. What a professional job! I naturally recommend this book for anyone planning a trip to the Galapagos (it has a helpful section with sketches to help identify the birds and other wildlife), but also for anyone with a general interest in nature. If you like those Nature specials on television, this book is for you. As for me, I've added the Galapagos Islands to my list of Places to Go in the future!

A layman needs a good guide when on tour of a new territory, whether that be a museum, a literary genre, or a country's heritage. In David Pearson's and Les Beletsky's 485 page ECUADOR and its GALAPAGOS ISLANDS, they present a book that is as good a guide as a layman could hope for, not just for exploring Ecuador or its Galapagos Islands, but for getting to know much of the fauna of Amazonian Latin America. The text is professionally written, yet down to earth and not infrequently humorous. The famous entomologist J. Henri Fabre once wrote, "Others again have reproached me with my style, which has not the solemnity, nay, better, the dryness of the schools. They fear lest a page that is read without fatigue should not always be the expression of the truth. Were I to take their word for it, we are profound only on condition of being obscure." This approach to scientific writing - being informative without being pedantic - allows writers like Pearson and Beletsky to fill the reader's heart with wonder while still often bringing a smile to his/her face.

With Ecuador being one of the most biologically diverse countries on earth, it is impossible to create a book that is both comprehensive and brief. The authors have gone for middle ground, covering the portion of Ecuadorian wildlife that is of interest and/or likely to be spotted by the ecotraveller to Ecuador. There are 96 color plates (with 5-6 animals illustrated on each one), several pages of color photographs, an excellent chapter - with maps - of Ecuador's National Parks and Bioreserves, a section on Ecuador's geography and habitats (e.g., Lowland Wet Forest, Mangrove and Coastal Vegetation) along with drawings illustrating several major plants in these regions, and 200 pages of animal descriptions under the headings 'Amphibians', 'Reptiles', 'Birds', 'Mammals', 'Insects & Other Arthropods', and 'Galapagos Wildlife'.

As an Ecuadorian resident, I have found this guide to be an excellent aid to identifying and understanding the natural history of the country. The book was both informative and fun to read, and I can highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about this wonderful area of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Go go Galapagos!.......2000-07-28

I have just returned from those Enchanted Isles and found Beletsky's guide omnipresent, dog-eared and tightly clutched in the sea-salted hands of many a visitor. I am surprised that the Sea Lions and Blue Footed Boobies did not have their own copies!

This guide is a truly indispensible accessory for those fortunate enough to have visited those Islands of wonder and enchantment. It is also a great whetter of one's appetite! Other books have their strengths, but when push comes to shove, or in this case just going around..., one wants a thorough compliment to one's naturalist (to make all those notations when one gets back home, of course) and also a look into what is to come. Accurate and beautifully illustrated.

    Book Description

Made famous by Charles Darwin's work on evolution and speciation, the Galápagos Islands contain an extraordinary wildlife that attracts thousands of visitors today. Those tourists who wish to concentrate on the birdlife now have A Guide to the Birds of the The Galápagos Islands, which offers unprecedented comprehensive coverage. This field guide presents every species to have been recorded within the archipelago, including accidentals and vagrants. Twenty-eight color plates illustrate the species, while four color plates show the key island habitats, with typical bird species for each also depicted. Beautiful line drawings, often showing interesting aspects of bird behavior, complement a concise, accessible, and informative text.

The book describes the morphological aspects that make it possible to identify the birds in the field, and also explains the natural history of the species that are resident to the Islands. An introduction offers information on the weather, topography, and evolution of the Islands and their birdlife. With this guide, all visitors, experts and beginners, will be able to identify and appreciate any species within the unique avifauna of the the Galápagos Islands.

5 out of 5 stars THE guide book to birds in the Galápagos.......2002-12-30

If you want to "do" the birds in depth, this is THE book for learning about the incredible endemics that gave rise to Charles Darwin's theories about evolution, as well as the resident and migrant birds for the "Islas Encantadas". (If what you need is a portable, topical and fairly complete field guide to all the critters here, get "An Identification Guide to the Birds, Mammals, and Reptiles of the Galpagos Islands" by Andy Swash et al, ISBN: 0300088647, here on Amazon instead.)

Unlike another reviewer, I DO recommend going to the Galápagos, but I also suggest doing research (Barry Boyce's guide, and others) to choose a "green" small boat trip of a week or ten days, one that assures minimum impact.

Politically, these unique and valuable islands are in peril right now from what has heretofore been an uncaring and corrupt government that has allowed illegal migration of people and their cirtters (one result was the 2002 oil spill off San Cristobal), untrammeled shark finning, sea cucumber gathering and commercial fishing within the boundaries of a most unique and valuable World Heritage Site and presumably legally-protected Ecuadorian National Park. Ecotourism has provided the money, concern and motivation to keep these islands preserved for research and future generations- for now. GO on this trip of a lifetime, but please tread lightly, observe and learn, support the "Islas Encantadas" from being fished out and plundered.

5 out of 5 stars Evolution at its Best!.......2000-10-11

This guide chronicles all you ever needed to know about the birds of the Galapagos! As a biologist, I am interested in many kinds of books about different species of animals, and this is among the best I have seen about the Galapagos. Hopefully more people who are eco-conscious will decide to buy guides like this one, instead of actually visiting the islands directly, we're leaving too many footprints on a valuable resource. Whether you are dreaming of a trip to the islands, or just plain curious, this book will help you become well aquainted with the birds of the Galapagos.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Galapagos Guide Out There!.......2005-02-15

If you are planning a trip to the Galapagos, this book is a must have. It covers everything. It begins with the historic and scientific background including Darwin, the ocean currents and arrival of various flora and fauna. Part Two describes all of the various wildlife on the islands. Part Three desribes in detail all of the islands. There are wonderful maps showing the details of anything you can think of looking for on each island. Part Four is dedicated to the Galapagos National Park. There are also sections on diving, practical information, chronology of the islands, appendices, etc.

This book is well written, the photos are great and as I said before, the maps are fantastic.

    3 out of 5 stars A disappointing guide.......2000-07-27

I bought this book due to the somewhat glowing reviews. I usually don't complain about that, but in this case I feel compelled to post a warning: if you are thinking of buying this book as a travel guide, don't! It has very little information about how to travel in the Galapagos, in fact I don't think the author really wants you to go to the Islands because he complains throughout the book about the impact of tourism.

The book is poorly edited with numerous mistakes. For example, Constant attributes "survival of the fittest" to Charles Darwin in the very weak section on evolution. In fact that phrase belongs to Herbert Spencer writing about evolution. In another area the author states there are two species of snakes on the islands, then goes on to describe eight species. One pet peeve, he calls Gulls, "seagulls" throughout the book, a very common, but galling mistake. I believe that English is not the author's first language and this shows throughout. In one area there is a reference to "black men" which doesn't seem to relate to anything else in the paragraph. This should have been noticed by the editors.

I think the sections on geology and history are probably very good, but the section on evolution is rife with mistakes. I won't detail them here, but if you want to know about Darwin and the influence of the Galapagos on the development of the theory of evolution, go somewhere else; this book will seriously mislead you.

The strong point of the book, the the only reason I gave it three instead of two stars, is the photographs. This are by the author and are outstanding, especially the underwater photos. The species lists seem very good and this book, if used with a good travel guide, would probably enhance a trip to the Galapagos.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......1999-12-13

Pierre Constant has created an exceptional book for anyone with interest in the Galapagos Islands. He describes their origin and natural history, as well as details of the flora and fauna on land and in the sea. Lovely color photographs and many diagrams help make this book indispensable for anyone studying or visiting the Galapagos.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic and well illustrated book on Galapagos wildlife.......2001-03-26

David W. Steadman, Steven Zousmer, and Lee M. Steadman have done an outstanding job on this book on Galapagos wildlife. The book is basically divided into two parts. The first part, amply illustrated by highly quality full color photographs, describes the overall geology, topography, climate, flora, and especially fauna of this important group of islands. Much of this stems from the fieldwork of David Steadman and his brother Lee. Truly fascinating, everything from paleonotological research in the islands, speciation of the island's famous finches, Charles Darwin's explorations and work in the islands, to conservation and more are addressed. Also found in part one are maps, both modern day and some early maps from when the island's were first being explored, as well some early scientific illustrations of the island's plants and animals.

Part two though to me is the main reason to buy this fine book, which contains the color plates by artist and scientist Lee M. Steadman. These excellent illustrations depict every resident species of bird from the islands as well as least one species of each major group of native reptiles and mammals. Even a few extinct species are illustrated. Accompanying each full page illustration of an animal in its native habitat is a full page description of the species, noting physical description in detail, ecological role, natural history notes, life habits, how the group got to the islands, possible relations to other species not only on other islands in the Galapagos but also on the mainland, and notes relating to conservation. The color plates are excellent, very true to life and quite beautiful, illustrating such species as the Galapagos Tortoise (of course!), the Marine Iguana, Red Bat, Galapagos Fur Seal, Galapagos Penguin, Dark-rumped Petrel, Flightless Cormorant, Lava Heron, and the San Cristobal Mockingbird. The famous finches of course are given several great pages of illustrations with several pages of text devoted to them.

This is a great buy, and it is a true shame that this book is out of print! I'll never understand why some books go out of print, this book is in my opinion a classic not only on the Galapagos but in the field of natural history in general, and should be reprinted again and again. I highly urged all of those interested in these wondrous isles to get Amazon to search for this book for you.
