The Best Book on the Subject.......2002-12-02
This book is a must read for any person interested in the cutlural effect of wild and rural land fire. The book is accessible to everybody, it is well writen and light on technical jargon. Pyne undertook a momentous task by writing this book, nothing like it exisited like it when it was first published in 1984, (sorry to the one review that stated that his older books were better, this is the first one, his other books are great supliments in the cycle of fire.) A GREAT BOOK.
Culture and Fire.......2001-03-12
Although there are any number of worthy books and articles on the ecological effects of fire (and of fire-suppression), Pyne's take on the ways in which humans have and still do use fire in manners which are as much conditioned by matters of tradition as well as those of rationality struck me as a novel way of looking at the subject.
As a child I gleefully participated in the annual raking of fallen tree leaves into piles and their subsequent destruction by fire. It seemed part of the natural order of things and was great fun. Although the community that I grew up in has long since banned the practice, it never occurred to me to reflect on the cultural norms behind the practice until I read this book. It is rather enlightening and humbling to see one's own behavior examined with the level of detachment and dispassion that an anthropologist might bring to some unfamiliar and seemingly bizarre practices of some isolated aboriginal tribe!
This book is no polemic, nor does it have any obvious agenda. I am unaware of any controversy over its contents. This is not to say that the author's views are not fresh and interesting.
The author is highly knowledgeable about his subject and previously published a highly acclaimed book about a tragic forest fire-fighting incident that resulted in the deaths of several fire-fighters. This book does not have the high drama of that work, but it is very well written and stimulating. A very good read, in my estimation.

High interest book on meat eating plants.......2004-04-08
High interest topics are covered in the Eye View series and this one is no exception. The meat-eating plants covered are the pitcher plant, venus's flytrap, cobra lily, sun pitcher, albany pitcher, monkey cup, sundew, butterwort, and bladderwort. Did you know that monkeys have actually been seen using the monkey cup plant as a cup? The photographs are excellent, but it is a little disconcerting to see the book's cartoon child guide inside the traps of the meat eating plants. Karen Woodworth-Roman, Children's Science Book Review

I have been to New Orleans millions of times and this is the best all around book. The author has really, really researched and pulled up ALL kinds of interesting tidbits.
I think that Compass guides in general are the extra travel books one buys. I wanted more than Fodor's has because I already know all the best places to go. I think that she had good choices and you could use it as your only travel guide.
I think some readers were disappointed because maybe they were taken back by the exorbitant prices hotels charge. Hotel-wise , you don't get much for your money unless you go in summer or during Christmas.

This is an utterly luscious picture book. Chock full of photos of real interiors. Real homes of artists and the creative. Homes of people who love peeling wallpaper and cracked plaster; and especially those who love living in the midst of art works, or deeply personal collections.
The homes of people who love the humid haze, moist clay-scented New Orleans.

Southern style at it's best.......2002-11-08
This book has great interior pictures of some glorious New Orleans homes. Unfortunately when I've been there, I didn't have the opportunity to go inside to see the many interior styles. This book gives me the opportunity to see the beauty inside, that I've only been able to view from outside. Great book for those of us who love and appreciate the city!
Not enough on its own.......2002-01-02
We just got back from 5 days in New Orleans, and this was the only guide we took with us. It was a mistake. It's a difficult book to navigate, has limited maps, limited selection of accomodation & restaurants. If you go outside of Madi Gras & with children (two teenagers in our case) half the book is irrelevent. The restaurant '100 best' list doesn't match Zagats (always reliable). It warns against solo visits to the cemeteries (they're not safe, go on a tour), but doesn't explain why! Pity there isn't a Michelin Green Guide.

Yes, I purchased the "Mastering APA Style," Student's Workbook and Training Guide, it is a wonderful book. It has showed me a lot about the Grammer I guess I missed out on in school, but I am due to the contents in this book, getting better at writing. This book has been a great purchase in my future, if anyone is looking for a good book to learn APA writing style this is the book for you.

This book was very helpful for me because it had actual exercises for me to evaluate and complete and the answers were on the opposite page. Because of the ring binder, it was easy to complete the exercise without being tempted to look over to the next page. But once I was done, opening the book with the pages both in view aided me with understanding when I was incorrect and why.

APA Style: Student Workbook A Must for Any College Student.......2005-07-26
The APA Style: Student Workbook and Training Guide is an excellent tool for any college student at any level. I am in my senior year of college and have struggled with my writing abilities from the beginning. Thanks to this Workbook, I was able to narrow down my weaknesses and actually work on my problematic areas like: grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.
The spiral notebook style of this book comes in very handy when studying the book itself or using it as a reference book when writing papers. I recommend this book to anyone needing help with problematic writing errors or just need an APA Style Manual to assist with references.

This is a good resource guide if you need materials to test a student's knowledge of APA Style. I found it useful to evaluate students' knowledge of APA format before I had covered any material.
Unfortunately, I was expecting more information on pedagogical methods for teaching APA Style, not just for testing students on it. The resource guide consists of multiple choices evaluations and answer keys. If that is what you are looking for, it is a very useful resource.
