good... I bought this book only because it's a textbook for my class...never read the whole chapters
A Good Start to Ecotourism.......2000-02-07
This was a very good introductory book to ecotourism. It was not too scientific as well as not being too elementary. It provided good information about the multiple effects of ecotourism in order to make the reader more aware of tourism's effects. I will be able to apply the information I obtained and use it for my trip to Central America in order to be a respectable and responsible traveler.

California Desert Flowers: An Introduction to Families, Genera, and Species (Phyllis M. Faber Books)

Book Description
The Mojave Desert eco-region extends from eastern California to northwestern Arizona, southern Nevada, and southwestern Utah, and boasts plant communities as diverse as alkali sinks, dune systems, Joshua tree woodland, pinyon juniper woodland, mixed mojave scrub, and even riparian woodland. Mojave Desert Wildflowers will be appreciated not only by amateur wildflower enthusiasts, but experts will also find the detailed photographs and charts useful in distinguishing among similar species in difficult groups. Species are arranged by color and plant family for easy identification. This guide features 300 of the common species, full-color photographs, detailed descriptions, information on bloom season, and interesting facts about each plant.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely Easy To Use.......2006-04-16
This is probably the easiest to use desert plant book I have (and I have eight that focus on desert plants in all). What it lacks in completeness, it more than makes up for in terms of ease of use. There is a picture for each plant and the plants are grouped according to flower color. So as long as the plant is in bloom, it's not too hard to find out what it is. This book does a great job of covering the plants you are most likely to come across which makes it a great book to thumb through in the field. If you are dealing with similar species within the same genus or rare plants, you'll probably want to get the Jepson guide.
Beautiful pix, helpful text.......2005-09-02
I love these Falcon guides mainly because of the lavish color illustrations. Every flower in the book has its own color picture, along with helpful descriptions. The front matter in this book includes all sorts of background material about the Mojave, along with the usual educational stuff about plant types, leaf distribution, etc. And the book is made to last -- if you take any care of it at all, it will last you forever.
Great book.......2005-02-12
Money well spent. We are ready for wildflower season! A lot of color pictures with good information. If you live in or near the Mojave Desert this is a valuable book.
A Gorgeous, Informative, Sturdy Field Guide.......2003-07-15
Pam MacKay's 'Mojave Desert Wildflowers' is a wonderfully informative & beautifully photographed guide to the wildflowers of the Mojave. This sturdy plastic-coated field guide contains over 300 gorgeous photos, finely detailed plant descriptions, and is virtually an introductory textbook on Mojave Desert ecology. I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates the Mojave Desert. The author lives & teaches in the Mojave and her dedication, attention to detail, and love of the desert are revealed on every page.

Beautiful Book!.......2003-05-15
This guide is so easy to use and the pictures are beautiful. I highly recommend this guide for first time wildflower enthusiasts!

Wildflower Guide.......2006-05-14
This book does a very nice job of dealing with some of the most common wildflowers likely to be encountered in Death Valley. While "Mojave Desert Wildflowers" by Pam MacKay might be easier to use and more thorough, Roxana Ferris does a fine job cataloging the common wildflowers of Death Valley. There are exceptional line drawings for each plant and a limited number of photographs. Considering that this book was published in 1983, it really is quite nice. For some plants Ferris also includes information which is not included in other guides. If you feel the need to have five or so books which deal with desert wildflowers of the Mojave Desert (especially the Death Valley area), I would definately recommend this book. Although it's not as indispensible as "The Jepson Desert Manual," it is without a doubt worth purchasing.

Great Source of Information.......2003-06-21
This is a very well-written volume about Nikko. It's crammed with information on locations and rituals. It also teaches about shrines and temples. Related history is provided as well. There are illustrations and diagrams for almost everything. There is no wasted space on the pages.
I've never seen a book this size have this much information packed into it. It's safe to assume there may be other books that might go into more detail on some of the subject matter, but this book should cover what most people need to know to enjoy a visit to the region.
Book Description
There has never been another period of time to compare with the last 100 years. From the Auto Age to the Computer Age, from Lucky Lindy to a man walking on the moon, our world has been an endless wellspring of unparalleled drama. Using their trademark brilliant photography and informative writing, the editors of Life have assembled a fascinating, engrossing volume that captures the happenings and the characters who have fleshed out this saga, names that will live through the ages: FDR and JFK, the Babe and Elvis, Einstein and Martin Luther King. And, of course, the likes of Hitler and Osama Bin Laden. This is a volume certain to entertain today and for generations to come.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2007-01-09
I purchased this book as a Christmas present for my uncle and aunt. They are both retired, and love to read. They immediately opened it up, and lots of wonderful family memories came into the conversation. It now sits on their coffee table.
Some dubious choices, but fun to look at.......2006-08-28
"100 Events" might better be titled, "100 20th century mostly-American events that LIFE has pictures of." Nothing wrong with that of course, but it would make for a more accurate title.
The book unfolds in classic LIFE format, with full page and double-page layouts of famous events. Some are truly momentous and have potential world-wide historical impact. The discovery of the structure of DNA will affect the way human beings heal, diagnose and even propagate. Dr. Christian Barnard's first heart transplant in 1967 also changed the way we see the human body - less as a unity than as an array of interchangeable parts. The dropping of the atomic bomb dramatically changed the nature of warfare and the way that all nations must learn to relate. And the walk on the moon in 1969 was a technical achievement that truly did astound the world and perhaps even paved the way for an end to the Cold War.
But Marilyn Monroe modeling a bikini? The Yankees acquiring Babe Ruth? Louis Armstrong? Madonna? The U2 Incident? Even the 1969 Woodstock music festival is a questionable choice.
Whatever.
The pictures are fun to look at. The events may spur debate. Which 100 would you choose? LIFE could have done worse.
Every Picture Tells A Story.......2006-02-03
There is a shot of Hitler primping in his open car before an adoring crowd, just soaking up the adulation. There is three-mile island ominously sitting in the dark with red lights (like Christmas lights) outlining it, and perhaps previewing the nuclear meltdown that occurred there in the late 70's. There is Dolly, the cloned sheep, looking at herself in the mirror, as amazed as we were at that time. There is a young Fidel Castro screaming into the microphone as he took over Cuba. There is the bus load of passengers reading about the Kennedy assassination at the same time, the disturbing headlines all facing the camera. These are just samplings of the great work that Life did.
Life was good at taking the right photographs at the right time.
This book is a good one, even if you only look at the pictures.

A sign of passing times........2002-02-19
A nicely designed book about the visual fun along the nations roads and small towns. By the nature of these signs a lot of them shown in this book have probably disappeared by now. How many barns are still standing with a Chew Mail Pouch Tabacco painted on them? The author's note that as companies merge and expand one part of America can now look very much like any other part but surely this has always been the case, a Coke sign looked the same anywhere, Holiday Inn used their 'Great Sign' coast to coast. Perhaps what they regret is the decline of originality (and fun) many small-time businesses put into attention getting signs.
Most of the hundred or so photos in the book are external signs but there are some vintage postcards, matchbook covers and architectural photos. The chapter on motel signs shows the art of the signmaker at its best, arrows, lettering and animal shapes made out of neon, revolving stars, in fact anything to attract the eye of the passing motorist.
John Margolies earlier book 'The End of the Road' covers the same subject but concentrated more on buildings rather than signs, both books capture a vanishing America. Nostalgia fans will love these books.
