This book was purchased for me shortly after I bought my golden puppy. She is now 8 months old - I have refered to it extensively all through this new undertaking. The layout is the best I've seen, illustrated with "how to" photos and filled with relevent and needed facts and information. It is a quick and fascinating read, covering what you want to know. Each time I go through it, I find something I hadn't seen before.

If you want a purebred, but not sure which one to get, make sure you read the books by Bruce Fogle. This book covers such things as basic commands, crate training, first aid, breeding and so much more. The book isn't long and I found it so helpful.

I found this book very helpful. It has graphs that have trainability, house trainability, etc. that compares them to different breeds. It is quite useful in the training section too. It also has a history on the dog, and just about everything you want to know about Goldens.

some of the info in this book is untrue...Color of a Shepherd DOESN'T EFFECT A DOG'S BEHAVIOR, for Example Black Shepherds are calmer and white Shepherds are Hyper. Any Shepherd can be hyper, my Sable Shepherd was hyper up til he died 12-12-06 at 7 months old. So COLOR has NOTHING to do with a dog's Temperament or Behavior
Extremely basic information about the breed........2007-03-18
It is basically a picture book with captions and some information in small paragraphs. It explains all things in basic terms and pictures. It has helpful information about the breed in history and relatives and some basic training styles to common health problems. It is more of a quick reference book, like cliff notes for more detailed books on GSDs, than anything else. I would recommend for younger readers or people that really like the breed and want just a basic, picture filled book to introduce people to the breed. I would also recommend for someone shopping for a dog and has yet to chose the breed, it explains how to pick a puppy and what is needed for the German Shepherd through out its life and would be a good reference to compare different breeds.

this book is a great source of info not seen in any of the other Shepherd books. It is sort of small, but goes very in depth into specific Shepherd health problems, Shepherd traits, diet, and anything else. I liked the fact that it was Shepherd oriented the whole way throguh, unlike many other dog books. I highly reccomend this, even if you already have a GSD.
A book full of striking photos and good advice.......2002-06-02
I have had this book for some time and have recently decided to revisit it. I am glad I did. Along with the incredibly good quality photos of the many different 'models' of GSD that are available (and so co-operative for the camera!),there is lots of sound advice on anything you could possibly need regarding your GS. It is a bit short on words, but this makes the information concise and easy to remember. I particularly liked the first aid advice, so this book could prove invaluable and is small enough to be portable, so the advice can be at hand should you need it... The book would be great for a new GSD owner (perhaps included by the breeder on purchase of the pup?), as well as the experienced, especially if you like pictures of nice, everyday, non show dogs!

Compact size. Carefully put together information. Solid basics given without too many words but understandable. Pictures are very helpfull and exceptional quality. This is cheap and good book for novice GS owner. I favor this book out of 4 i bought before.

Not nearly as vital as the inside cover proclaims, this book lacks in-depth information. Overall, it gives you very little useful info on the various breeds. You get a breed history snippet, very generic temperament description, and information like size and coloring. If you want in depth historic and breed information, look elsewhere. This book is only useful as a pictoral guide to common breeds.
Great book on dogs and dog breeds........2007-03-18
It has great pictures of over 300 breeds and basic information on all of them including their size and weight, brief history, country of origin, job, and has a picture of a man and the dog to show the size. It also has the history of dogs and many other great information. I have had the book since I was young and it always was a great source of information and a great book to just look at all the different breeds and their pictures. I loved the book then and love it still. I highly recommend for any household that has any interest in dogs and for young kids that want to know more about the dogs they see on tv, outside or at dogshows. I Love this Book!

This book is visually clear as well as informative regarding over 300 breeds. The organization makes it easy to find that odd breed seen on TV dog shows, even if you missed the breed name. The dogs are organized according to the major groups, and then in each section are grouped with like types.
Each dog's description includes beautifully done photographs showing different views, samples of color variations, and a graphic that compares the dog in size to a human. The description is concise and includes additional facts about the history and other interesting information.
This book includes major breeds as well as breeds not common to the American Dog shows and as such is helpful when watching shows from other Countries.

If you love dogs, this is a book you will enjoy for the profusion of excellent photographs! It is also packed with good information. Each breed is described in one or two pages with bullet points about its history and character. Color-coded data in the margins tells you the size and weight, temperament, and origin of the breed. But the best part of this book is the collection of full-color, detailed, and very expressive photos.
The book is organized into chapters for "companion dogs, gundogs, herding dogs, hounds, terriers and working dogs." This is a little confusing, at least to a non-breeder. For example, Labrador Retrievers are in the 'Gundogs' chapter and Chow Chows are under 'Working Dogs'. Fortunately, there is an index to assist with locating the dog you want to learn about.
I picked up this book to help me identify the breeds that went into my two adorable mutts. I admit I didn't get very far -- best guess is that one is a Lab-Chow Chow mix and the other is at least part American Pit Bull Terrier. Now that I have this book about breeds, I think I need a "Mutts of the World" book to help me figure out my little monsters!

WE are starting the search for a new dog and I have narrowed the number of breeds I am looking at to a handful. I bought this book as a way to learn more about cockers. This book containes many features I found very useful - full descriptions of the differences, both physical and tempermental, between American and English cockers, great behavior profile charts, sex and type differences, breed-specific health problems and even a section on how coat color effects personality. While cockers still seem to me to be wonderful dogs, this book helped me determine that they are not the breed for our family at this time. A very useful and well written introduction to the breed.

For all its slim 80 pages, this is an excellent reference book. In particular it so graphically illustrates the differences between the American and English Cockers, that anyone in doubt of their own dogs lineage, would not go wrong consulting this book.
Colour photography is used throughout and all salient points are accompanied by appropriate photography or diagrams.
It might be a small book, but it seems to cover a great deal.

I was disappointed in this book. It barely touched on some important topics. I would strongly suggest buying "Dachshunds for Dummies" instead.
Dachshund for Dummies.......2002-03-27
I just recently had a medical emergency with my Dachshund. She woke up and I noticed that she was dragging her back leg, I knew immediately what was wrong and took her to the vet within an hour of noticing it. Within 8 hours she could not stand on either leg and I had to rush her to a big Vet Hospital, they did surgery on her that same night. Back problems in dachshunds are common and if I had not read a lot of books on the subject I would not have know. I found this book very well written and very informative, the way they explained everything about their backs in depth. I would recommend this book very highly and plan on purchasing it for all the people who purchased her puppies, a MUST FOR ANY DACHSHUND OWNER.

I liked most of this book. I have a male chocolate lab and wanted to know more about the breed. It covered every area from showing, to the breed standard to lab behaviors. The only subject I was dissapointed about was the lack of information on breeding a male labrador. I wanted to know more about the basic steps to take when breeding my male lab with a female. For example, when can I breed him? How do I get the word out that I have a male labrador to breed? If you're an owner of a female labrador, this book covered those areas. However, there were only a few lines on breeding a male.

I bought this book for other Labrador (1st and multiple time) owners who also enjoy it. Some things the pictures present may otherwise be difficult to explain. I am researching all I can for an upcoming Poodle purchase. I picked this book up at a store, and was pleasantly surprised when I came home and read it. It's small, only 80 pages, but I thought the information included in those pages was outstanding. I was really surprised. Good job, Dr. Fogle.

I bought this book based on the reviews already listed. When I received it I was extremely disappointed. I found this book to be very inaccurate. Its statements based on color and size were complete opposite of my exprience and that of my family. I also found it to be inadequate in breaking down general appearance and grooming of the poodle. I have found many books far better than this one.

I read this book because I have an interest in the Balkans and was actually in Montenegro once. I made it all the way through the book, but was not impressed. The plot rambles and the various characters' motivations are often unclear. The characters are mostly one dimensional and formulaic -- the adventurous, handsome Englishman in an exotic foreign land, the evil Austrain captain, the fanatic Montenegrin freedom fighter (Danilo). At times I thought I was reading a romance novel. In sum, there are better ways to spend your time than reading this mediocre, plodding novel.
Incorrect Facts about Montenegrin Ethnic Background.......2004-10-31
The historical and ethnic setting of the novel is at least disputable. Montenegrins have their own identity, and they call themselves Montenegrins, not Serbs similar as Austrians are not called Germans, and Scotsmen are not Englishmen.
Ethnically, Montenegrins are similar to Serbs, but to put the sign of equality, even for the fiction, hurts the ethnic sentiments.
Perhaps, it tells more about the source of historical facts Mr. Lawrence used than about his intentions to promote any view on Montenegrin ethnicity.
Untangling Balkan politics and English romance.......2004-01-06
Lawrence has written a brilliant novel full of history, politics and romance. The reader will care about the characters and shudder at the foreshadowing of Balkan conflicts. The prose is rich and with many exquisite description of human emotions and natural phenomna. I am only sorry that Lawrence does not have string of novels to his credit. I would surely read him again.
Literate Adventure is more literature than adventurous.......2002-09-20
Occasionally, when I read a book, the hype is such that I expect more than I get. This book is billed as a literate spy novel about a British adventurer, young and naive, who gets caught up in the intrigues of the Balkan peninsula during the period just prior to WW1. It turns out to be much less than that, and in a way more. The fact that it doesn't live up to its promise was something of a dissappointment to me, and it was only partly offset by what the book was instead.
Auberon Harwell journeys to Montenegro at the behest of the murky Lord Polgrove, to do something intelligence-wise. We're never sure what Harwell is there for, other than his half-make-believe cover story of collecting flowers for his sponsor. He doesn't seem sure what he's doing either, and muddles around aimlessly for half the book before he begins to actually do things that impact the plot in any way. When he finally gets to some action, the author turns what was supposed to be a spy novel into a tragedy involving a mother's love for her son, and the consequences that flow from that. There is finally some adventure towards the end of the book, and the plot does begin to speed up. It was too late for me, however, to enjoy the book. In the last thirty pages, the book takes some strange turns, and frankly it sounded like he got tired of writing.
Some of the prose is quite eloquent. The question is whether eloquent prose in service a plot that's much ado about nothing. I, frankly, think that the story's the important thing, unless the prose is truly memorable. For me, the book didn't measure up that way.

Beautiful Visual of Orson Scott Card's Alvin and Ender.......2007-08-30
You have to get this if you love Alvin and/or Ender. This graphic novel is a great blend of alternate past and future. It is also the first time I have seen such a beautiful rendition of native americans for just a comic book.
Alvin's story is more amusing to see it from another perspective. You need this perspective to appreciate how simple, yet full of foreshadow, the first two Alvin books were. The story shows great care where racial lines are between the whites and reds, yet somehow Alvin trusts.
Ender's story is also an outsider's view of the Ender's universe with the first colony. There is a great potential story line of discovering more about the "bugs" that Ender is so intimate with.

A SHORT work,thought provoking and yet............2001-12-09
Things work out strangely on ones journey through life. Picture me stranded with broken fan belt on the way home from work on my wife's birthday. That morass overcome,and truck in shop, I drove the family car to work on Thanksgiving morning, departing earlier than usual for whatever reason. On a sixty-five mile drive, what do I encounter but a broken down vehicle in the same exact spot I languished in just a few days before. Now only five minutes from my office and well ahead of schedule, I was transporting a brother and sister to a nearby apartment. They were fresh from Kosovo. Speaking little english, we bade each other farewell and they were in my thoughts often in the coming weeks. Christmas shopping for year 2000 led me to a discount bookstore where I found this work as well as a stack of others on the Balkans. I would rate this book more highly were it not for the price (...) It was admitted to by the author in the preface to the American edition:the text apeared on two weekends in the Suddeutsche Zeitung. It is a mere pair of clippings,granted.
On to the merits of the book: Handke states the war was the reason for his journey, and that he was "drawn" to the country (Serbia) of the disintegrating Yugoslavia "least known to me". In my impression, he observes and questions constantly all aspects of the situation. He has experienced, from Germany, through the slant of the media lens what he sees as distortion. Here he tries hard to gain a proper perspective during the short journey he has through the countryside. A worthy read and best read twice, as I am about to do.
Lyrical questions.......2001-08-20
I know nothing about Serbia beyond what the press commonly reports. This book is the first I have read about that country. It makes no apologies for Serbian atrocities. It does, however, lyrically call journalists and journalism to task.
Written in German in late 1995 for a European audience, this 82-page book applies equally to the U.S. I speak as a former journalist who, during 25 years of largely national U.S. writing, plumbed every side to every question before reaching conclusions--always over-reporting to find nuances, and often reaching conclusions only as I wrote. It was a handicap not easily overcome.
That is not how many, perhaps even most, journalists work. The fault is built into the system. Editors expect reporters to have an angle before they present an idea. Without a hook, assignments are often not made. Editors will deny it, but they expect reporters to have reached some conclusion before they begin reporting, and to report to prove their points. In other words, they routinely ask journalists to put the cart before the horse--an especially troubling phenomenon in this era of political correctness.
Reporters say they are after truth and good. Most are in fact after the big game, the story to make them famous, a kill. Nowadays CNN hires television actors as news anchors. You get the picture. Ironically, on big stories covered by throngs--which I intensely disliked and avoided, and which of course include wars--reporters tend to mimic each other, to sit around after they file, bragging about their prowess. The largest braggarts are also often the least talented.
Institutionalized problems have a depressing effect on journalism. Few stories are black and white. But most present that illusion, although they are products of very little, if any, deductive thought. Certainly, nuances do not surface in short sound bites feeding most news wires. Peter Handke seems to know all this--and a great deal of philosophy.
Serbia aside, this book shows, in near-poetic language, that things are not always as journalists portray them. For that alone, Handke's tiny volume is worth its weight in gold. Alyssa A. Lappen

An excellent book for those who wish to want to have an alternative prespective and source of information with respect to the conflicts in Yugoslavia.
While the editorial reviews were negative, they are also hypocritical, as it is appears unlikely that either of the two editorial reviewers have any first-hand information, but instead are regurgitating information from the western press (one of the key points which Handke raises).

Once again, Handke tackles a difficult issue with masterful language. Upon its publication, the book received numerous negative responses by many critics who clearly had not read the piece. This carefully constructed book never "sides" with anyone, instead it attempts to seek out questions rather than answers. It is a dense difficult piece that is made very accessible by Scott Abbott's fine translation. I strongly recommend it and urge you to read it with an open mind.
