5 out of 5 stars great way to teach manners.......2007-10-10

I bought this book for my 4 yr old who is an avid reader. She loves this book, and we've read it many times. Together, apart, a lot! I like the idea of using cookies to illustrate what each manner (or emotion) means. The 'retro' illustrations are wonderful as well.

I'm SO pleased I chose this book for my grandchild! This book is meant
to build good character in a child and with optimism! Before I give it to
my grandchild I should read it several times to REMEMBER...! a book for
ALL times, for ALL people especially those engaged in wars.

5 out of 5 stars Cookies - Bite Size Life Lessons.......2007-09-24

Such a clever book - very different from the other kid books out there, and a great way to explain concepts that little kids otherwise have a difficult time grasping. A great gift-book, too!

5 out of 5 stars Tasty Terminology.......2007-07-13

Wondering how to teach your preschooler or young child about putting others first? This book offers a sweet way to gently teach a child the meaning of cooperation, gratitude, honesty and more. Each character trait (positive or negative) is illustrated with a vignette relating to baking, eating and sharing cookies. The pictures are charming and endear children to the attributes. My 3 year old daughter requests this book over and over again and we enjoy the pictures and the humorous, sweet explanations. My favorite shows a little girl reaching over a long table to hand part of her cookie to a tearful kitty cat who has just dropped his cookie on the floor. It reads, "Compassionate means . . .Don't worry, it's okay. You can have part of my cookie." We all have something to learn from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-07-04

I purchased this because of a wonderful review. I was not let down. My children, 4 and 6 love it as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Bible Translation and 12-step Biblical Study.......2007-03-11

This Bible is a translation by a collective group of biblical scholars of many denominations. It is a flowing, dynamic translation that remains true to the original language as exegeted to modern language. It is a great simplified version of the Bible in a very readable form that has tremendous 12-step insights related to the word of God. A great gift for a Christian in recovery to link his or her faith to the 12 steps.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study and Resource Bible.......2007-02-19

The Bible was received in excellent condition and in a very timely manner.

The Life Recovery Bible is one of my favorites because it's written in plain english. I also enjoy the summaries found at the bottom of each page because they are thought provoking. The recovery themes help to bring worries into proper perspective.

This Bible is very good for those in recovery. It is best when used in a recovery group setting and there are leaders who help you work through the recovery steps and verses. The NLT translation is very easy to understand and this Bible will also help in other parts of your life.

Do you communicate ineffectively with some people and powerfully with others? The reason may be a difference in personalities and communication preferences. The Art of Speedreading People is a crash course in communication strategies, showing you how to observe behavioral clues to gain valuable insights into people's personalities and communication styles. The result: you become a more effective and convincing communicator, and you are more likely to receive the response you want.

This book is like a practical communications seminar based on the psychology model called Personality Typing, which is focused on identifying key personality traits in order to communicate most effectively. First, you analyze your own personality type and determine your placement on the scales of extrovert/introvert, sensor/intuitive, thinking/feeling, and judging/perceiving. The book then teaches you about the clues that indicate other people's personality type, including speaking style, body language, and occupation. You test yourself by reading a few scenarios and personality typing the characters described. You put the system to work by learning approaches to "speedreading" people in person and on the phone using skill-building exercises. Finally, you learn how to communicate effectively with people who are a different type or temperament than you. The Art of Speedreading People is intriguing and useful, especially for those who work in a sales, service, teaching, or managerial position, or any job where effective and positive communication is paramount.

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one book on personality type, this should be it.......2006-05-11

I took the Myers Briggs personality test and learned a bit about personality type in communication and psych classes in college. But I wanted to know more. I wondered how I could figure out the personality types of others and use this information to help understand and communicate with others. I came across this book on Amazon and I think I purchased it because of all the great reviews. So I thought I should contribute a great review too. If you only buy one book on personality type I recommend this one. It's a great intro to type and it's very easy to understand. I refer back to it all the time. I also recommend "Just Your Type : Create the Relationship You've Always Wanted Using the Secrets of Personality Type" by the same authors, which matches all 16 personality types with each other, explains how type affects couple's interactions and suggests potential sources of conflict. Also very interesting. I would definitely purchase other books by these authors.

The NLV is my favorite version and this study bible really helps you to get into the word and fully disect it! I love the breakdown of the 1 year reading schedule in the back. It is enough to get you through the whole bible but isn't overwhelming or hard to fit in. It even tells you that it focus' on all of the main and key points of the bible. I love the cross refrences and I love how you can read a foot note for almost each verse to totally understand it's meaning. I have been much more excited to open my bible and read it every day since getting this. My husband really likes the traditional looking bibles so this wasn't one to get his attention, until he started looking at mine. Then he wouldn't leave mine alone until we finally bought him one too. It is a perfect size...not huge like the full size version, but it does make the print kind of small. I personally am not bothered by the print. There is tons of extra information and extras in this bible and I truly recommend this bible (especially since it is priced at an awesome price) to anyone, people familair with the bible and especially people still growing and learning. It has been my most favorite purchase in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Best next step to complement 12 steps.......2007-05-14

I hadn't read the Bible since youth, so this wonderfully-organized edition was a timely gift for me and, I believe, many others who are going through the pain, effort and joy of a 12 step recovery. Written in contemporary English, with many side bars and references to other chapters and verses pertinent to specific step-work, this version of the original "Big Book" lacks the elegance of the St. James or other traditional editions.{ I have a purloined Gideons to check the authenticity of this modern newcomer] It is,however,a no-nonsense work resource for those seeking the relationships, commonalities and divergences between the Bible and the principles of the 12 step approach. If you prefer to read in chronological sequence, you may, but to do so would miss the purpose of the structure the editors provide. Similar to those on the Internet, the sidebars provide "wormholes" to explore the universe of the Bible in a thematic manner. In any case, whether one is a focused researcher or simply lacks the discipline and fortitude to plod through a traditional version, the Life Recovery Bible is worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars A new way to read your bible.......2007-05-10

Nicely laid out. There are over a hundred sections that deal with recovery issues. Each day of your bible study takes you to a new verse and then commentary. It goes through the recovery steps one at a time before moving onto different verses/commentary that support the next steps. Also easy to read. if you choose to only study your bible 5 minutes at a time you'll get a lot out of it... no other bible I've seen allows you to study so little. Blessings and prayers to you for your success.... Paul

    Book Description

John Tyler Bonner, one of our most distinguished and creative biologists, here offers a completely new perspective on the role of size in biology. In his hallmark friendly style, he explores the universal impact of being the right size. By examining stories ranging from Alice in Wonderland to Gulliver's Travels, he shows that humans have always been fascinated by things big and small. Why then does size always reside on the fringes of science and never on the center stage? Why do biologists and others ponder size only when studying something else--running speed, life span, or metabolism?

Why Size Matters, a pioneering book of big ideas in a compact size, gives size its due by presenting a profound yet lucid overview of what we know about its role in the living world. Bonner argues that size really does matter--that it is the supreme and universal determinant of what any organism can be and do. For example, because tiny creatures are subject primarily to forces of cohesion and larger beasts to gravity, a fly can easily walk up a wall, something we humans cannot even begin to imagine doing.

Bonner introduces us to size through the giants and dwarfs of human, animal, and plant history and then explores questions including the physics of size as it affects biology, the evolution of size over geological time, and the role of size in the function and longevity of living things.

As this elegantly written book shows, size affects life in its every aspect. It is a universal frame from which nothing escapes.

    5 out of 5 stars Great stuff!.......2007-07-06

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It feels like you're hanging out with an old friend on the back porch. It is a very easy read, and the topic is neat. I really enjoyed the part on quorum sensing, totally fascinating. Thanks for a great book! I went to the library and checked out 3 more by Dr. Bonner.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great book.......2007-05-26

I found this book to be relatively interesting. It reads a bit like an academic trying to write a popular book: it is readable, but I sense a struggle to write in an unaccustomed genre. I thought Cats' Paws and Catapults: Mechanical Worlds of Nature and People was a better book, although more general in scope.

5 out of 5 stars Big Ideas in a Small Book About Sizes.......2006-12-18

It must be true that size is important; I can count on regularly getting e-mails that tell me I ought to be dissatisfied with my current size and that offer me just the potion to improve it. That's not the big issue in _Why Size Matters: From Bacteria to Blue Whales_ (Princeton University Press) by John Tyler Bonner. "No one can escape the universal rules imposed by size," Bonner writes in the preface. Or, "To put it another way, size is a supreme regulator of all matters biological." There are aspects of size here that are surprising, and all the more so for most of them being in plain sight for any of us to have come up with. Bonner is a biology professor emeritus, who has concentrated his career on smaller animals ("I have devoted my life to slime molds," begins one of his other books) but takes up the problems and potentials of scale for plants and animals of all sizes, even imaginary ones.

Bonner does not mention science fiction movies which have as staples terrifying oversized creatures; his fictional examples are residents of the lands visited by Lemuel Gulliver, both the Lilliputians, one twelfth of Gulliver's "normal" height, and Brobdingnagians, twelve times his height. He repeatedly shows that if these were real biological creatures, just because of size difference, they would have different skeletons, different intellects, different voices, different metabolisms, and different lengths of life. Size would make those creatures different in many ways that mere inches could not measure. Bonner may draw many of his examples from Swift's fantasy, but his observations are all drawn from physics and biology. Increasing an animal's size always increases its complexity. Not only is this true from one species to the next, but since we all start out as simple singular cells, it holds true through the development until adult size is attained. Our gastrointestinal, cardiac, neurological, and other systems are more complicated than those of animals smaller than we, not because we are the exalted lords of creation, not because our big frames need more stuff to fill them, but simply because we are the size we are. As Bonner says, size rules all. Size considerations even answer the question of why animals evolved from tiny unicellular creatures into us and into whales and sequoias.

There are equations and logarithmic graphs within these pages, but Bonner's tone is never pedantic. He may frequently invoke Gulliver (or Tom Thumb and even Sinbad the Sailor), but the lessons are drawn from real animals, like Bonner's beloved slime molds, or geckos, bats, or fairy flies (actually tiny wasps with feathery wings), or ourselves. _Why Size Matters_ is itself a small book, but it is freighted with important scientific ideas brought forth with admirable clarity and good humor.

5 out of 5 stars Dee Bigger Dee Better .......2006-11-26

John Tyler Bonner is an Emeritus Professor of Biology at Princeton University. This present general consideration of the importance of 'size' in overall evolutionary development comes after years of close observation and study of cellular processes. For Bonner the complexity of an organism is measured by the number and kinds, the overall variety of cells which comprise it. Very simply , organisms of smaller size cannot have systems of operation of a kind that larger ones can. As he understands it 'size matters' and is a prime determinant of the shape and structure of the organism.
This is his summary of the main theme of this work.

" Changes in size are not a consequence of changes in shape, but the reverse: changes in size often require changes in shape. To put it another way, size is a supreme regulator of all matters biological. No living entity can evolve or develop without taking size into consideration. Much more than that, size is a prime mover in evolution. There is abundant evidence for the natural selection of size, for both increases and decreases. Those size changes have the remarkable effect that they guide and encourage novelties in the structure of all organisms. Size is not just a by-product of evolution, but a major player. Size increase requires changes in structure, in function, and, as we will see, in other familiar evolutionary innovations. It requires them because they are needed for the individual to exist. Life would be impossible without the appropriate size-related modifications."
Bonner goes on to explain why 'size' has been neglected as a subject of biological study. He gives general principles which indicate the overall importance of size.
He in this regard says that Strength is dependent on Size, that complex functions such as metabolism, speed of mobility, longevity and growth depend on size. He also says that the division of labor ( the complexity of an organism) is a variable of its size. Also he indicates that the surfaces which enable diffusion of food , oxygen and heat in and out of the body vary with size.
Bonner provides entertaining and interesting illustrations and examples. One has the pleasure of reading a book in which one feels an immense amount of learning and understanding is condensed into a relatively small number of pages.
While his general line seems to be 'bigger is better' rather than 'small is beautiful' this work would seem to fit into the latter category.

5 out of 5 stars Small Book; Big Thoughts.......2006-11-11

    Size matters.

It determines what any organism can do. Yet, size is relegated to the sidelines of scientific study. It is usually studied only as a corollary of another variable - speed, longevity or metabolism.

John Tyler Bonner, a retired Princeton biology professor, changes that. By examining stories from "Alice in Wonderland" to "Gulliver's Travels" grants size its scientific due. In this well-written and easily-understood book, Bonner spans the giants and dwarfs of the human, animal and plant kingdoms. He explores the physics of size in biology, its evolution and its role in the function and longevity of living things.

Size rules all things: strength, surface, complexity, living processes and abundance. No endeavor escapes its tentacles.

It is a small wonder that Bonner addresses his subject in as lucid and conversant manner as he does in this small, but pointed and thought-provoking book.

With a background in paleobiology, Christopher McGowan is adept at asking deceptively simple but actually very awkward questions of the "Well, we've dug up this fossil skeleton, now how on God's earth did it ever fly?" variety. McGowan looks at the way the scale and shape of animals relate to their behavior, diet, and life span. Why, in other words, tortoises live far longer than guinea pigs, but aren't nearly as much fun.

This line of argument leads to some seriously counterintuitive physics as McGowan explains how animals of different scales handle and exploit the physical constants by which they are bound. Discussions of drag, inertia, and viscosity are particularly well handled.

Especially refreshing and entertaining is McGowan's happy willingness to admit that millions of years of evolution are smarter than he is. Sometimes animals just make no sense at all. Consider Quetzalcoatlus, a pterosaur with a 40-foot wingspan and a long, serpentine neck. How did it get off the ground? Its neck suggests it may have been a carrion feeder. Did it climb laboriously to the peak of some vast saurian carcass and hitch a passing thermal? "This entire scenario," McGowan admits, with delicious understatement, "strikes me as fanciful."

While Diatoms to Dinosaurs is marketed very much at adults, there is an infectious enthusiasm about McGowan's writing that suggests a gifted teacher sharing sophisticated just-so stories with a spellbound class. --Simon Ings, Amazon.co.uk

    Book Description

In Diatoms to Dinosaurs, Chris McGowan takes the reader on a fascinating journey through the natural world, and examines life in all its various forms. He imparts the excitement of discovery and the joy of understanding as he demonstrates the central importance of size and scale to the survival of living organisms.

McGowan investigates a wide range of size-related phenomena, from the gliding mechanism of diatoms to blood pressure problems of dinosaurs. Questions asked - and answered - include:

The author explicates the scientific concepts - both physical and biological - needed to inform the relevant phenomena: area/volume relations, metabolism and other basic physiology, kinetic energy, inertial forces, the biology of senescence, boundary layers, and Reynolds numbers. Numerous illustrations scattered throughout the text make the biophysical principles easily comprehensible to readers, regardless of their scientific sophistication.

    5 out of 5 stars Intriguing........2002-06-21

The book is about muscles and skeletons, hearts, fluids and brains. Quite a large chunk of the book is about flight. I found the most captivating chapter was "Tiffany wings and kite strings". It is all about tiny fliers: microfilm model airplanes and microscopic flying insects. It reveals that the mechanism that insects use to fly is different to birds. After reading this, you may think twice about squishing the next harmless little insect that flies right by you. The section on drag was surprisingly very interesting.

Although it introduces familiar animals, it goes into enough detail to provide substantially new and rewarding information about these creatures, which you almost certainly won't be aware of. There are loads of great diagrams, which really make this book very enjoyable to read. The book is straightforward and I relished reading it.

A very very similar book is called "Cats' Paws and Catapults". It also contains many examples of design, although it is from an engineering perspective, and the focus is on comparing the design of evolution with that of technological invention. I think Diatoms to Dinosaurs is a much more interesting read - it is predominantly concerned with nature, not with technology. This book is simply more profound, but both books are very good.

5 out of 5 stars No fireworks but comprehensive.......2001-10-20

This book covers a great many zoological issues connected with scale as succinctly as possible offering a fairly comprehensive treatment. It includes scalar descriptions in terms of physiology, intelligence, lifespan, flight and swimming (among others) and whearas the style may be staid, palaeontologists will find much to refer to in this book which is based on solid foundations rather than guesswork and opinions. A must for students, researchers and communicators on the subject.

5 out of 5 stars Unlimited wonders of Life.......2001-03-16

An excellent exploration of the mysteries of living things.

We are surrounded by wonders. From the tiny phytoplankton with 7.5 micrometers in size, to the giant brachiosaurus weighing 78 tons, life manages to find its way, showing us facts that are just almost impossible to believe.

This is one of those books you can trust because is written for somebody who knows what he is writing about. Explores quite interesting subjects ranging from the movement of the wings doves and bats, to the heart rate of mice, and the naps of elephants. There are also very good illustrations in it.

Definitely, a very nice and productive reading for everybody, especially for those Lovers of Nature.

We need a wide mind to understand the wide wonders of Life.

2 out of 5 stars Interesting Subject; Dull Book.......2000-04-16

This book almost repays the drudgery of reading it. It should be a case-study in poor editing. Apparently, no one ever quite decided who the audience was, and so it falls between any: though aimed at the general reader it is in essence a summary of technical literature - complete with maths, graphs, equations (more than a couple), and citations of authority in quasi-academic style. The text is at least one or two drafts from being finished; there are inadvertent repetitions, important points blurred or glossed over, paragraphs broken badly, and several discussions (including an entire chapter) that are off-topic and mostly pointless. McGowan's personal stories and asides are not well-integrated, as if an afterthought tacked on simply to soften his rather dry style. The illustrations are small, the photographs few and not directly relevant to the text.

McGowan seems to know what he is writing about; he needs an editor firmer and more adept and a publisher willing to put more money into the production.

4 out of 5 stars Physics of biology: limits of animal size and speed........1998-08-19

McGowan has put together a nice book about basic limitations that physics sets on animal size, e.g. how insect respiratory system limits insect size, or how big a bird can fly, or how body shape, swimming speed and Reynolds numbers compare with plankton and whales. Even though the subtitle claims that the book is about "living things", there is nothing about plants, which is a pity because e.g. trees are extreme in size. McGowan's writing is lucid and the level is good for reading: there are a couple of equations and about hundred simple charts and figures (B&W, nothing fancy) which give good extra information to the text. I was looking for a good study bible that would not only allow me to get into the word but to be able to apply it to where I am now, today and the Life Application Bible more that exceeded my expectations. I highly reccomend it.

4 out of 5 stars The LAB helps you dig deeper.......2007-03-08

This Bible was one of my best purchases this year! I own the NIV Life Application, but I have always enjoyed the New Living Translation. The Life Application study notes are wonderful and provide new perspective when reading those passages you've read times before. If you're just beginning reading the Bible, the notes will give clarity to stories, concepts, and characters you may not understand.
I like the two-tone leather and the personal size is very convenient. My only complaint with the personal size is the margins are inconsistent. One page may have a wider top or side margin than the page right next to it. Not a huge problem, but may really bother some readers.
So get the standard size if you need balanced margins, but please consider the Life Application to help you dig deeper.
There is no better study tool than the Life Application Bible!

    Book Description

Although size exclusion chromatography (SEC) is perhaps the most popular and widely used technique for determining the molecular weight distribution of polymeric materials, there have been very few texts written on this topic. During the past decade, SEC has experienced a considerable amount of growth in regard to column and detector technology and new applications. With these advances, SEC can now be used for determining absolute molecular weight, polymer chain conformation and size, and branching, as well as polymer solution properties. This book introduces the reader to the fundamentals of SEC with emphasis on practical aspects of the technique, such as column and mobile selection, calibration, new detector capabilities and guidelines for performing SEC on most types of polymers, especially those of industrial importance. This book is intended for either those new to the field of SEC, or for those research workers who require a more comprehensive background.

4 out of 5 stars Good book, but highly OVERPRICED.......2001-08-30

This book introduces the fundamental concepts of Size Exclusion Chromatography with emphasis in the practical aspects, without going into many details, or mathematics, but gives the necessary information. It is very readable and it is not intended to the specialist in SEC, but for people who use it, especially in polymer analysis.
On the downside, it is very, very, very overpriced.
