Another winner by Mark Blum.......2003-03-07

It would be difficult to assemble a finer 3-D book. Everything works. Until you see this book, you have not seen a frog, a snake or a gecko. The detail in the eyes, feet and tongues are amaizing. This book really puts things in perspective. For children AND adults.

Fabulous book with stereo 3-D photos!

I highly recommended this book for school children and adults alike.

I was introduced to one of Blum's books by a friend and liked it so much that I sought out and bought all of his 3D books. I find the price so reasonable that I've since bought more to give as gifts.

I enjoy looking at the 3-D photos as much as my seven year old son so I already know several adults as well as children who will be getting this book as a gift.

The technical quality of the photos and printing of the books is very good. A magnifying, stereo viewer is built into a unique bi-fold cover of the book A little research showed that this idea is well over a hundred years old (like stereo photography) but I still find it very innovative because it is so rare and unusual.

The photographer has an inspired eye and top technical skill. The close-up photography is wild. I wonder how he got those frogs to hold still like that. Some of them are beautifully colored too.

The writing accompanying each image adds to the photos with just the right amount of scientific and general information to serve both young and old reader. I like this book very much and I hope you find this review helpful. I recommend looking for the other 3-D books by Blum. They are all great!

GREAT FUN for ALL Ages!!.......2001-11-09

Well, I am running out of superlatives for Mark Blum's work! I just have to repeat myself - AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES IN 3-D is simply FABULOUS!! One of the MANY wonderful aspects of this book is how it takes you right INTO the world of these creatures. YOU get shrunk down to the size of a tree frog to meet one! AMAZING!

And all for this price!?!? How DO they do it?

Not just for Kids!.......2001-09-07

The publisher has unfortunately tried to market these fabulous works as childrens books (not that they aren't wonderful for kids as well), but these photos are truely amazing both in the quality of the photography, but also in the presentation. They are printed on very high quality coated paper with a STURDY set of lenses built right into the hard cover, which allows you to view them in all their splendor without any additional equipment.

These are not red/blue lenses! The images are presented in true color stereo pairs and when viewed, merge into a single, dynamic 3D image - WOW! I can't say enough about the overall quality of viewing for ADULTS as well as children.

The price is another thing that confuses me. I don't know why these are so inexpensive? I urge anyone who loves nature to buy all of the books in this series!

So, good. Don't miss it........1999-12-30

All I can say is that you will be amazed at this book, and I have spent the last week since I got it doing nothing but using it.

Outdated Information Dangerous for Iguanas.......2000-04-24

This book suggests two things that condemn it as being an unreliable source. It suggests that hatchling iguanas eat insects as a part of their diet. This has been shown not to be true. Iguanas eat only vegetable matter their whole lives and diets with high animal protein can kill them by age 6 (the process is slow and unnoticeable). The second suggestion that iguanas need to ingest gravel to aid digestion will be much more quickly fatal to an iguana. Iguanas are not birds and do not have any requirement for gravel. This book was published in 1976 and the information has been since proven harmful.

Way cool!.......2000-04-30

"Outrageous 3-D Reptiles" is a "very cool book" in the opinion of my 5-year old. Including a pair of 3-D "glasses", this book has 3-dimensional pictures of reptiles ranging from chameleons to crocodiles. Each photo is accompanied by a breif description of the animal, including what it eats and where it lives. A great book for children, especially those interested in reptiles.

As a travel writer focusing on the New England States, I am always on the look out for informative and well-written guides concerning these interesting states.
A well- researched book can provide an excellent window into a particular geographical area's history, culture, attractions, and its people.
Not surprisingly, Insight Guides New England guidebook effectively synthesizes an understanding of the culture, history, institutions and people of this rich region.

A look at what the book offers will assure you that you will not be disappointed with its contents.
Commencing with the chapter entitled America's Attic, the guide book exposes how the traditions of Old England were blended with the New World's values creating six distinctive states, each with its own character.

Drawing upon the vast knowledge of the book's contributors, these six states, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, are more fully explored providing the reader with a better sense of place and understanding of their distinctness.
In addition, there is an entire chapter devoted uniquely to Boston, its history, diverse neighborhoods, attractions, and daytrips you can enjoy if your home base is here.

The back flap of the book contains an index pointing out the page numbers that will immediately provide information about getting acquainted, planning the trip, practical tips, getting around, where to stay, and activities.
The front flap of the book indexes the main cities, popular attractions, heritage sites museums, alluring islands, waterside venues, and the principal maps.

Best of all are the well-selected photographs of places and people enliven every page.
These photos are a visual delight- stunning, superb, clear and sharp of the highest quality depicting scenes of amazing color and beauty.
Just look at the image of the quintessential fall when you first open the book-a scene that would be worthy to a shortlist of the Audubon Society calendar.

As in all of the Inquest Guides, the main places of interest in the Places section are coordinated by number with a full-color map and a symbol at the top of every right-hand page telling the reader where to find the map.

Good way to see Boston.......2004-06-16

I found the suggested routes and hotel/gallery/hotel listings espacially useful. This is the only guide I used for my vist to Boston, and it worked well for me.

This is a great compact guide, which is easy to tote around and refer to. The travel tips section suggested a great variety of galleries and restaurants, and was helpful in planning how to get around the city (my first time in Boston). I used Insight Guide: Boston to plan my trip, and then carried the compact guide around in my purse when touring the city. Both the Insight Guide and the Insight Compact Guide to Boston were great fo rme, and I would recommed either or both to anyone planning a trip to (the really nice) city of Boston.

Very pretty, but occasionally wrong and incomplete.......2005-01-19

This book is certainly heavy on the eye-candy - it has lots of great pictures (though perhaps dated... very late-80's hair styles) and nice listings describing the colleges and whatnot. If you're looking for something that gives a feel for the look of the place (or at least the look on nice early-summer days when all the students are wearing their gowns), this is a lovely place to look.

Unfortunately, glaring factual errors and odd 'stereotypes' really detracted from the quality of this guide. Included is a brief summary of the Oxford colleges. Unfortunately, many are left out (seemingly at random - the maps also leave out several important sites while including other entirely mundane ones) and the descriptions of others are factually quite incorrect (and sometimes contradictory - All Souls is described as being the only graduate college [it is not a graduate college], then Nuffield is also described as being a graduate college [it is]). There are also odd little tidbits of information that seem to represent a story of the colleges frozen sometime in the past (and not a nifty 1920's past - presumably the late 1980's or early '90's when the first edition was published) - 'excellent darts team?' ok, so they may have once, but that's rather useless information today. My own college's description, though quite pleasant, is not a very good representation of the place today. Some of the college descriptions are also really just mean, representing some undefined antipathy on the part of the author (did someone from that college steal his girlfriend or something?).

Overall, it's a very pretty publication that certainly had a very good team of photographers and graphic designers, but as it's not so strong on the facts and could do with some updates - Oxford isn't as unchanging as it may seem.

Oxford for any traveller.......2001-06-26

This guide is the kind of tour book I love; richly descriptive, and it doesn't hold back on the details. It is filled with pictures and historical exerpts as well as great pub guides and college information. Having spent some time in Oxford I can honestly say that the book was true to the feel of the old town, and was a clear and vivid portrait of the sights and sounds of one of my favorite places in the world!! The practical information in the back caters to the tourist; the college guide caters to future students, the nearly 100-page section at the beginning is perfect for the ameteur historian with it's pages on the monarchy of old and the origins of each custom, building, and college. The founding of the colleges, events, and other features are detailed, and interests of every kind can be researched in this compact text. Maps abound throughout and illustrate different aspects of the college for a walker, driver, or bicyclist with great clarity. I was amazed to realise that I had read the entire book in one sitting. I may never go back to the travel books full of text, because they don't excite the reader for his/her trip, they are hard to get through, and they are downright dull to read.

I got this book because I need it for a class, but I actually started reading it before the class started. It's a great book to give you the basic info about a lot of popular and historic places in Boston. Each site has about 4 pages of info, including websites, phone numbers, and other tourist info. I wish I had known about this before my senior year of college in Boston.

This is a cute little coloring book for youngsters who have Native American blood! It teaches them information about the Dakota Indians as well as creating a fun way to learn. Since coloring is a childhood favorite, this is a great way to get some information across to youngsters.
