Book Description
Clean, healthful, sparkling water - that's what a backyard swimming pool is all about. Professional pool maintenance crews can keep a swimming pool clean and its water crystal clear, but they cost a small fortune. Yet many pool owners who try the do-it-yourself approach find themselves plagued by a host of troubles. Cloudy water. Algae sprouting on the pool's walls and bottom. Pumps, pipes, and other equipment that corrode and deteriorate at an alarming rate. Funky odors.
That's where WHAT COLOR IS YOUR SWIMMING POOL? steps in. This classic time-tested resource for pool owners is back in a completely rewritten edition and with a new author. Alan E. Sanderfoot has updated the text to spotlight the latest swimming pool technology and has greatly expanded the range of information about hot tubs and spas.
This easy-to-use, easy-to-understand resource teaches pool owners everything they need to know about keeping a pool or spa beautiful and healthful. Sanderfoot starts with basics: water treatment and filtration systems. Then he moves on to the nitty gritty of how to select and care for filters, pumps, motors, and heaters. He explains the best way to clean a pool, how to make minor repairs yourself, and what to look for in pool covers and such pool accessories as automatic water monitors.
You'll find step-by-step directions for winterizing a pool, and for opening it up again in the spring. There is even a chapter on inexpensive things the owner can do to give the pool a face-lift. WHAT COLOR IS YOUR SWIMMING POOL? demonstrates how a little investment of time throughout the swimming pool season can prevent major problems and expenses down the road.
Customer Reviews:
Good advice for pool maintenance.......2007-09-15
This book quickly answered some vexing questions I have had for some time concerning the correction of imbalances in my pool water. It clearly explains what steps are needed to put things right. Good value for money!
Basic but good.......2007-08-16
Middle of the road. I preferred the Ultimate pool guide, but as a newcomer to pools this book also helped me understand a lot.
Layman's Guide.......2005-08-11
This book was written in layman's terms. Everything was explained in easy to follow step by step directions. I feel much more in control of my pool after reading this book. I will definitely keep it around as a reference book.
Good Introduction To Pool And Spa Maintenance.......2005-07-16
I own a home with a large spa in the basement. When I purchased the home, the spa was not filled with water, and since I had no experience maintaining pools or spas, I read this book to give me some general operating tips. Although the book is not written to explain details concerning all complex pool and spa maintenance procedures, it is an excellent introduction for the novice pool or spa owner.
It is true that the author sometimes refers the reader to a trained pool professional, but I think that is appropriate given the range of possible complications. He also recommends getting a periodic professional water analysis (most pool shops will do this free or at very reasonable cost) as the chemical sticks are good for only fairly basic information. One of the strengths of the book is the explanation of the basic applied chemistry involved in pool maintenance.
After reading this book and getting a water analysis, I have been confidently enjoying the hot tub. Overall, I recommend this book for all pool and spa owners, especially novices. People with a lot of experience with pools may desire a more advanced text, but I think this one works great for probably 99 percent of the pool and spa owners out there.
A fine homeowner's guide to maintaining a trouble-free pool.......2004-03-10
This updated third edition provides a fine homeowner's guide to maintaining a trouble-free pool, spa or hot tub. The updated edition has been completely revised and covers everything from water safety and treatment options to solar heating. Spas and hot tubs are also included in this edition, making it an excellent, practical owner's guide.

small but good book.......2006-03-17
Small book, too small for reading at circle time to group of children. Hardback cover is approx. 5"x5" with pictures inside much smaller. This would be a nice book for one on one or independent reading, or leaving in science area, it has a lot of good information.
painstaking 3-d detail inspiring sense of wonder.......1999-09-27
These painstakingly detailed, beautiful drawings are serene, pensive, yet light-hearted 3-dimensional renditions of these tiny creatures. The text and illustrations inspire a closer look and sense of wonder for small children and their adult companions. And it fits in your pocket!

Customer Reviews:
Forget it / time warp.......2002-08-06
Do not buy this book. It is incredibly out of date. It also spends too much ink on the tourist traps that are already well known (e.g., 20 pages on Harvard Square, which is increasingly full of chain stores), and gives short shrift to the neighborhoods that are truly up and coming (e.g., one column on Central Square...which is also increasingly full of chain stores :-( ). A big disappointment, since I liked one of the earlier editions so much. I'm not sure what they updated for this edition; they highly recommended a bakery that's been shut down for over six years! Talk about information anxiety....
I am a long-time Boston resident, and I bought this book to loan to my guests from out-of-town. Now i'm going to find a book that has actually been updated since the days before "internet". Is there a Rough Guide for Boston?

This story of a tragically injured young silversmith who ends up hip-deep in the American Revolution is inspiring, exciting, and sad. Winner of the prestigious Newbery Award in 1944, Esther Forbes's story has lasted these 50-plus years by including adventure, loss, courage, and history in a wonderfully written, very dramatic package. It's probably not great for little guys but mature 11-year-olds or older will find it a great adventure.
Book Description
Johnny Tremain, winner of the 1943 Newbery Medal, is one of the finest historical novels ever written for children. As compelling today as it was fifty years ago, to read this riveting novel is to live through the defining events leading up to the American Revolutionary War seen through the eyes of a boy who turns in his smithing tools to take up a rifle and fight for the liberty of America. Fourteen-year old Johnny Tremain, an apprentice silversmith with a bright future ahead of him, injures his hand in a tragic accident, forcing him to look for other work. In his new job as a horse-boy, riding for the patriotic newspaper, the Boston Observer, and as a messenger for the Sons of Liberty, he encounters John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and Dr. Joseph Warren. Soon Johnny is involved in the pivotal events shaping the American Revolution from the Boston Tea Party to the first shots fired at Lexington. Powerful illustrations by American artist Michael McCurdy, bring new life to Ether Forbes' quintessential novel of the American Revolution.
Customer Reviews:
Who are these people?.......2007-09-11
It is a sad commentary that a book as long-lived, as rich and readable, and as useful as a window on life in Revolutionary America (albeit only as detailed as appropriate for a young-person's book) is trashed by "readers" (if indeed they read the same book I did) whose sub-literate spew is as empty of content as apparently their minds are.
Dishearted by the use of profanity.......2007-07-15
Although the story line was very good, I was very dishearted by the use of profanity, slang terms, and the use of gory details that just didn't need to be there. I would not let my child read this book because of it. The profanity and slang terms were not needed. If you don't have time to read the book check out these pages 5, 26, 37, 49, 70, 108, 115, 121, 128, 129, 146, 168, 193, 212, 214, 222, 235, 236, 245, 246, 278, 286, 301, & 308. I know we each view things differently so you be the judge.
Excellent for the whole family!!.......2007-07-15
A great book to read aloud to one another as a family or just read by yourself. Tells the story of one boy's life in the time of the revolution of our country. He was filled with a pride that was brought low. His character developed into someone who could go on after a tragedy and be a benefit to those around him. Nothing boring in this book and will keep you turning the pages until the end.
Get this book for your kids -- then keep it.......2007-06-08
It makes me so sad to see how many kids find this book boring. I remember reading it to death as a kid, and loving it even more when I read it to my then-11-year-old daughter (though I have to admit that I loved it more than she did). The prose is crisp and vivid, the plot incredibly exciting, and the characters leap off the page. Johnny and Rab are hot! Come to think of it, that's why I kept rereading it as a kid.
This is a book for anyone who loves to read, and maybe that's why so many kids didn't like it. From my adult perspective, I was struck by how witty and nuanced Esther Forbes' observations of life in colonial Boston were -- perhaps beyond the grasp of most kids. I came away thinking about how ambivalent most characters were about the constraints placed on their lives by the mandates of Puritan belief, yet how fundamental faith was to them. I also admired the way Forbes contrasted Johnny's two crushes, the rich and snobbish Lavinia and the honest and loyal Cilla. The scene in which Johnny finally confronts Lavinia, revealing her to be a vulnerable human being rather than a goddess -- and thus letting the air out of his crush -- is masterful.
I would categorize this book as young adult rather than children's literature. I find I really like many young adult books because they're not afraid to be about something, and they leave your head full of ideas. Of course, that's like giving your kids tofu when they want a cheeseburger. (I like tofu, too.) But Johnny Tremain is way better than tofu. Read it for your own enjoyment, and if your kids are very good, let them borrow it.
Yawn- #1 Most boring book ever.......2007-04-24
I was forced to read this book for school and literally fell asleep a few times reading it. There is no excitement or adventure in the storyline and reading it just makes you feel more drowsy with every page turn. Who wants to read about a self-centered jerk who barely gets any better throughout the course of the book? Not me! If there was a list of the worst books ever written this would remain the chart-topper for eternity!!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
Back in the west.......2001-09-19
Ben is the main person in this story. They went west in 1845. His family went to Oregon. His doctor said it was better for him out there. I like the story very much. I liked how they showed the old pictures of the wagons going down the road. I liked the part where Pete pushed Ben and he hit his head against the tree. I also aliked the part where the oxen starting pulling the wagons and Ben sat on the ground. I didn't like the way Pete walked up and started talking to Ben. I thought it would be a surprise meeting.
facing west.......2001-04-07
My book is called facing west I like it because it has a lot of adventure and scary moments in it. They name things different then what we do. Zach and Ben are best friends it's a funny book too. AS you read this book you will find what the real Oregon trail and it feels like really on the Oregon Trail with Zach and Ben. I think you should read this book because I think you'llen joy it.
