4 out of 5 stars "Universe" Astronomy Textbook.......2007-09-30

It was very easy to order and the price was the same as my bookstore at school. The only thing that made it more expensive was the shipping and then it took about 5 days to get to me. When I received it it was in a very solidly sealed box that I couldn't open without a knife. When I finally opened it, the back cover of my "soft" textbook had poke holes all over it from where I tried to open the box on the back seam.
The book itself is well written with great pictures of the cosmos.

4 out of 5 stars Great introduction to astronomy with well thought out steps.......2006-11-05

This textbook is well written with well thought out sequence of topics and its bundled softwares are superb. It expounds the items of astronomical subject in clear unambiguous words arranged in logical order requiring only a modest mathematical skill, well suited for a freshman student for science requirement as well as an intelligent and curious lay reader. The content is quite up-to-date; more remarkable for its online companion for prompt updating for currency. For instance, in barely 2 months after new definition excluded Pluto as a planet, the webpage supplement already informs its reader of it. Included exercises and problems are thorough and complete, and thus allowing students to critically refine their grasp of the preceding topics. There are a few minor errors which are easy to be discovered by a reader, and how to access additional websites and CDs are not clear enough in the preface to the student. I base my review only on the first 5 chapters that was covered in my first academic quarter of study. However. browsing the subsequent chapters to the end lend me confidence that the quality has been maintained.

5 out of 5 stars Descriptive Astronomy for the Astronomy Student.......2006-06-11

Most introductory astronomy texts take the descriptive approach and subject the student to very little mathematics. Such tomes assume that the student is taking the course to fulfill a core science requirement or to satiate non-technical interest. This text is a rare exception to this rule.

Throughout the book simple explanations of the scientific phenomena discussed are detailed using algebra and trigonometry. Basic formulas are illustrated and ample problems are given to drive home the mathematical nature of astronomy. This text is perfect for the freshman or sophomore science major who requires a deeper knowledge of astronomy than a non-mathematical text could provide.

Make no mistake, the text can be used easily in a general astronomy class that requires no math prerequisites. However, for the physics or astronomy major who is just starting her study of the subject, this text is the perfect blend of description and mathematics. It would also make a fine introductory graduate text for elementary and high-school teachers who wish to pursue a master's degree.

The software on the enclosed CD-ROM disks makes visualizing the concepts presented within the text much easier. If one's physics department doesn't have access to a planetarium the software offered remedies the problem quite nicely.

1 out of 5 stars Quality of the delivered product........2006-02-21

While the reason for buying the book was met (required text book for university study) the condition of the delivered item was very substandard. When the book arrived it was bent and creased and the front cover had been "pushed" in such a way that it was starting to come away from the spine. The book was not secure in its packaging and was able to slide around inside the box scuffing both front and back covers. I would not be happy if this happened to a $20 book let alone a book that cost me AUS $135.

I will seriously consider next time I need a book whether I will get it from Amazon.com . The amount of money I saved was not worth the damage that occured to the item.

Not Happy!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous In-Depth Intro to Astronomy.......2005-10-12

I'm an amateur astronomy nut, and have read several dozen books on astronomy, cosmology, etc. This is probably the most clear, in-depth, understandable treatment of astronomical issues that I have ever read. Be it stellar evolution, stellar death, theory of relativity, black holes, galactic evolution -- you name it -- this book presents the research clearly, and explains tough to explain issues in terms I can understand. Bravo! My only complaint is that it's a bit heavy on Solar System research (first half of the book); I found the last half more to my interest.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for newer bird watcher........2007-03-08

We found your book to be full of beautiful bird pictures and good information. A excellent book especially for the newer back yard bird watcher. An excellent addition and tool for anyones library. A beautiful gift.

3 out of 5 stars Great pictures, information, poor selection of birds.......2007-01-23

I purchased this book for myself and our children to aid us in identifying the birds that are visiting our southern Arizona feeders. Unfortunately I found many of the birds we see were missing from this guide. It's got fantastic pictures, and excellent full page details on each bird which IS included, such as song, nesting habits and duration. I was very impressed with the guides on how to make your own birdfeeders of various types as well as the helpful guide in the back regarding landscaping for birds. Unfortunately, because it's not a regional book, it is proving to be less useful than I hoped. It's a great book to start with, but I think many birdwatchers, even casual ones like myself, will quickly wish for a more comprehensive guide.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, informative on many levels.......2006-12-15

I am new to birdwatching and purchased this book along with Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America. The Sibley guide covers more birds, but the Audubon has all of the common ones that I see in my yard, and has actual photos of the book as opposed to the drawings in the Sibley guide. I find that I refer to both of them frequently, however the Audubon book is one that you can sit down and read, whereas the Sibley one is a true field guide with just a paragraph on each type of bird. The Audobon book is a great starter book, and not only contains information on particular bird species, but also has great information on bird behavior and things you can do to encourge more visitors to your yard. I have enjoyed this book so much I just purchased it as a Christmas gift for my sister who is new to birdwatching also.

5 out of 5 stars excellant book for the money.......2006-08-12

Well illustrated, informative, helpful, perfectly priced.I recomend this book to amateurs and veterans of this hobby, this is a beautiful book easily worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH THIS ONE.......2006-06-23

I have been a rather serious birder for well over fifty years now and when I first saw this book (it was a gift) I almost felt insulted...back yard birder indeed! Well, I was wrong...I admit it. I have actually enjoyed this one far more that several of the many hundred or so more technical books on the subject that inhabit my shelves. This is a wonderful quick reference and is quite well organized. I have interested grandchildern and I not when they are here, which is almost daily, they reach for this volume far more than any of the others. Sharing my passion and hobby with them is great and this work is a wonderful help tool. Recommend it highly.

5 out of 5 stars Delicious and easy to make recipes.......2007-08-27

This is an excellent cook book on American barbequeing and the recipes I have made have been easy to make and delicious.I have been a bit dubious about some of the recipes after I have read the ingredients list but every time the recipes have turned out better than expected but exactly how the author Ray Lampe described. For instance I made the creamy coleslaw and it didn't sound like it would be that good but it was easy to make and the best coleslaw I have tasted.By contrast I have made a coleslaw from 'The Best Recipe cook book American Classics'and this has had a long description and went into great detail about every stage of making the coleslaw but the end result has been very disappointing. The book also contains little anecdotes about each recipe and the world of competition barbequeing and this all adds to the book.Overall this is an excellent book and I will be buying the rest of Ray Lampe's cook books.

4 out of 5 stars The Dr. is in.......2007-06-27

I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. BBQ at the Arkansas Literary Festival a couple of years ago. I bought his book then, and recently purchased another for my son.

Unlike most cookbooks, this one isn't just recipes and clinical information about the ingredients and preparation methods. Dr. BBQ includes stories about the people behind the recipes, as well as his own philosophy about weighty questions such as: Gas, charcoal, wood or pellets? Charcoal? Well then, chunk or briquette?

And to the people who insist that using gas isn't the way to prepare REAL bbq or charcoal isn't and so on, the Dr. suggests that unless they are going out naked and killing an animal with a stick before cooking it then THEY aren't really preparing bbq the traditional way either.

Good fun, good food, good guy. The recipes are easy to follow and produce great Q, but I must admit, I use this book for inspiration much more than for the recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Good cooking.......2007-04-10

Ray knows his stuff and can clearly express it. This ought to be your first reference when you're setting the menu.

5 out of 5 stars Very informative!.......2007-10-18

This book contains a lot of useful information. With details concerning every aspect of care for each type of animal. Would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-09-09

This book tells you everything you need to know for the novice to the experienced. Suggestions for those who want ornamental animals to the getting down to farming people. Pictures are great. Highly suggest this book!

4 out of 5 stars great book!.......2007-08-10

This book works great and spells everything out very easily. Not the most comprehensive I am sure but I actually learned alot from it. I was mostly interested in chicken and sheep as well as ducks and geese. great book for a beginner like myself.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, on various farm animals.......2007-08-08

This book is a wealth of knowledge! I own lots of books on raising ducks and chickens, and I have to say this book matches up well with all of my other books. Why is this impressive? Because the other books I'm comparing this book to are books that deal with only one type of animal (ducks, geese, chickens, exc). This book gives almost the same amount of detail as my other books plus it covers: Chickens, Ducks, Geese, Rabbits, Sheep, and Cattle. If your going to raise three or more different forms of live stock as a hobby, this is the only book you will need. If your going to try your hand at commercial production than you will need other books to supplement this book. I gave this 4 stars because the chicken and duck sections were not quite a thorough as some of my other books I own (though it came amazingly close). This is a no brainer purchase for anyone raising three or more of the animals listed above. A must buy...

5 out of 5 stars Best farm book yet.......2007-07-19

Have read lots of books in trying to get spun up on hobby farm life, and this by far takes the cake as number one animal 101. It is well presented, covers all the facts and includes diagrams and discriptions. Will recommend to others as first resource to start with.

Book Description

Your backyard can be the source of the best eggs and meat you've ever tasted. The answer is chickens--endearing birds that require but a modest outlay of time, space and food.As they learned to raise chickens, Gail and Rick Luttmann came to realize the need for a comprehensive but clear and nontechnical guide. Their book covers all the basics in a light and entertaining sytle, from housing and feeding through incubating, bringing up chicks, butchering, and raising chickens for show.Througout the book, the Luttmanns express their wonder at the personalities of chickens--the role of brash protector played by roosters, and the instinctive motherliness of the hens. Given some freedom and attention, these birds can become much more than the egg-and-meat machines of commercial hatcheries and broiler factories. Chickens provide backyard farmers with enjoyable pastime, as well as a supply of good food.

Good, practical information on a number of subjects related to raising chickens and problems one might encounter.

5 out of 5 stars A great beginner's Chicken Book.......2007-08-23

This little paper back book is full of useful information. We checked it out from the libary so many times it started to fall apart. I figured if we are reading & needing it that much, it's time to buy the thing! It gives you information on raising chickens, culling, & housing. It is easy to read and understand. This book is a must read for any chicken beginner.

4 out of 5 stars Great content...poor design.......2007-07-09

I learned a lot with this book, but the quality is awful. It looks like it has been poorly reproduced. The illustrations are not good at all. I wish they would redo this with quality typesetting and graphics.

3 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-05-28

This book is good for the beginner. However, I would strongly suggest having another reference in addition to this book. It was written in 1976, and some of the information is out of date (incubator temps and such). The strengths of this book are that it's easy to read, has a seperate chapter on roosters, and that they share thier own experiences and their own blunders. This book is a decent place to start, easy to read, and under a 150 pages. Not bad. I own "Keep Chickens" by Kilarski, "Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens", and "Chickens" by Sue Weaver as well. Storey's Guide To Raising Chickens" by Gail Damerow is more complete and up to date, but it's also more time consuming to get the information. "Keep Chickens" by Kilarski and "Chickens" by Sue Weaver are more up to date versions of this book, and Sue Weavers book in my opinion is superior of the three. If I had it to do over again I would have bought Sue Weavers book for getting up to speed, and Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens by Gail Damerow for more in depth information after I read Weavers book. Trust me I've looked at a lot of chicken books, and done a lot of reading. This book is decent, and it will give some good information, and I'm not sorry I bought it. However, there are better books out there. Gail Damerow and Sue Weaver have superior products in my opinion.

It reviews the different types of honey and their health effects as well as provides hundreds of ideas and recipes for using honey in recipes, cosmetically in facemasks and shampoos, and for medicinal uses.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting read.......2007-09-21

The book Backyard Barbeque: The Art of Smokology -- was somewhat helpful and probably a great book for those meat lovers who are REALLY into this kind of cooking. It was worth the price I paid however, just to get some information about timing smoked meats.

4 out of 5 stars My Review.......2007-09-16

This is a good informational book. There are some great recipes, and break down about marinating and wood is very important from novice to professional.

5 out of 5 stars Taking the guesswork out of the smoking process.......2007-09-01

Smoking meat is not a trivial process, as I learned when I bought my first smoker. My first attempt was a disaster, producing a burned, woody, unpleasant product. In fact, it was so bad, I had thoughts of never firing up my smoker again. But, after my wife bought this book for me, and I read the "basics" chapters, I immediately realized the several mistakes I made. While my second attempt wasn't nearly as bad as the first, it wasn't what I was hoping for. By reading and following Richard's instructions, tips and following his basic recipes, the third attempt at producing brisket turned out wonderful. What I like about this book is that it's written for both the beginning novice as well as the advanced smoker, with great, easy to follow recipes for rubs, mops, and sauces. And, it's not just dedicated to smoking brisket and ribs, but all sorts of other meats including seafood and poultry. If you struggle to produce a well-smoked product or are interested in improving your technique, I highly recommend this book! No other book has been as helpful as this one for me.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to understand, great recipes.......2007-08-27

This is a BASIC book to introduce you into smoking meets. I smoked for the first time over the weekend, and thought why not try pulled pork, I smoked it exactly as the book called for and it was fantastic. I also made the "take my breath away" BBQ sauce which was to die for. He has some spelling mistakes, but his easy to understand/great tasting recipes more than make up for it. No pictures in the book, but you can easily accomplish your goal with out the visual aids

4 out of 5 stars Good Info that Needs an Editor.......2007-06-02

This book has a lot of good information in it, but the editor should be shot. It's filled with a plethora of really annoying basic grammar mistakes. For starters, there is a difference between "to" and "too."

Aside from the grammar complaints, I really liked this book and use it as a jumping off point for my own recipes.

Nothing particularly creative in that book that anybody with some common sense wouldn't come up with.

5 out of 5 stars Just Plain Fun.......2007-04-24

Being a parent and a science teacher, I really love this book. It takes me back to my younger years when it was fun to launch anything more than 10 feet and still have all of your hair intact. What fun this book is! Gurstelle is great!

5 out of 5 stars ZOOOOM!!.......2007-04-13

If you like launching projectiles at incomprehensible speeds, making very loud noises, or launching more projectiles at lightning speeds then this book is for you it includes a few types of spud guns, a kite that you light on fire and the hot air slowly lifts it off the ground, three rockets two of which dont use fire making them relitively safe and some notes on safty (how not to blow yourself up) and a bunch of other stuff

great book!!!!!!!!!!

This an entertaing book. It would be excellent for anyone with kids. If more children and parents worked on these fun projects the kids would get an education, get out of the house and away from Video Games.

5 out of 5 stars fun and easy.......2007-01-10

We have tried the tennis ball cannon from this book so far and had great success with it. It was a great weekend project that was cheap and easy with great results. Great for summer time fun with the kids.

5 out of 5 stars Neat Source to have..........2007-06-06

I really like the 'down-to-earth' suggestions/comments. Enjoyable reading even quite humorous!

Lots of Recipes/Remedies using fairly common household items which are easily accesible & inexpensive. Instead of reading several products in the aisles, make your own right at home!! Things you use regularly may benefit your plants (EX: fling that banana peel in your rose bed - they'll thrive!)

Discusses many things from growing/caring for/etc Trees/Shrubs/Flowers to warding off unwanted 'pests' etc.

Good book to have. I'll be pulling it off the shelf often!

Boy, do I LOVE this book! I'm just a casual gardener, but boy, if you have nasty soil, need help getting your lawn started, garden started, problem with trees and plants, grab this book. I can tell you for a fact that that tonic Jerry has in this book for trees is just tremendous! Who would think that putting whiskey, beer, peroxide and jello on your trees would just make them grow huge in no time at all. My trees just love this stuff and I'm just thrilled with the results of all the recipes I've tried in this book. Plus, if you have problems with any plants you currently have, it's probably addressed in this book. Baker is the country's #1 gardener and this book shows why. I'm very thankful that I purchased it and got it for a great price on amazon.com. If you have roses and have trouble, this book is for you. He even tells you how to get rid of every bug imaginable. Also, if you're having trouble with your lawn, the remedy is in this book. Plus, Baker tells you how to select the proper plants for your area, and even outlines designs for you to have a nicely planted yard. He recommends what trees to plant as well and how they should be planted to take root quickly. He gives recipes for many tonics to get them off to a great start. Again, I can't emphasize how much this book has done for my garden. Now I'm attacking my clay soil and following Baker's advice. My yard is the best in the neighborhood!

3 out of 5 stars Overload.......2004-06-15

I just finished reading this book and, while it contains some good advice, I'll probably wait until I retire to use most of it. This is definitely for a hard core gardener, not a casual gardener like myself. There are so many different plant "tonic" recipes, it's hard to know which ones to use. If I followed all the advice found in this book, I'd never get anything else done.

Book Description

Showering outdoors after a day of playing in the surf, digging in the garden, or taking a daylong bike ride is the ultimate in summer relaxation.

Designer/builder Ethan Fierro celebrates the creativity and whimsical inspiration of summer with this collection of original outdoor shower designs he’s uncovered from coast to coast. He offers dozens of examples for homeowners to choose from, all pictured in stunning color photographs, ranging from the simple showerhead on the side of the cottage, to semi-detached and freestanding structures. Accompanying text describes the design and material elements involved in each example.

Beginning with the basics, Fierro includes an overview of basic plumbing and structural requirements, along with suggestions for incorporating a wide range of building materials, including stone, wood, metal, frosted glass blocks, earth, concrete, tile, stucco, and landscape vegetation. His plans are environmentally sound and mindful of cost-saving techniques, with ideas for repurposing found and recycled materials.

Fierro exhibits his own inspired aesthetic in the final chapter with illustrated plans for six fantasy showers, including a tree house, a vineenclosed frame, a stained-glass nautilus, and an underground cavity with a hole for sky-viewing. The Outdoor Shower will set free the inner spirit—and the inner builder—of any summer-home owner.
