Book Description

Highway 50 crosses the heart of Nevada. It follows sections of trail first marked by John C. Frmont in 1845-1846 and early government surveyors in 1859. Pony Express riders raced over parts of the route in 1860, and the Lincoln Highway, the nation's first transcontinental highway, came this way in 1913. Today's traveler on what some call "America's loneliest road" will sample almost every aspect of Nevada's complex and exciting geology, will pass through historical mining towns that are evidence of Nevada's legacy as "The Silver State," and will cross the new Nevada gold belt where producing mines help make Nevada the number three gold producing region in the world. Several side trips explore ghost towns, petroglyph sites, rock collecting localities, and wildlife viewing areas along the way.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a travel guide.......2004-08-22

"Close enough for government work" is a slam with a core message that is demolished by Tingley and Pizarro's book. The inside cover makes it clear that this book, published by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, is keyed to the designation by the Nevada Legislature of US 50 as the official "Loneliest Road." Thus forwarned to what by conventional wisdom ought to be a badly-organized piece of legislation-inspired junk, I was blown out of the water (OK, sand) by the photos (plenty of color but also outstanding B&W), organization, and clear and enthusiastic writing. The emphasis is on geology over social history, but the interaction between the two is always made clear. And it's not just history--wise comments re the possible sound of Sand Mountain versus the reality of OHV roaring alert readers to what is worth stopping for. Anyone traveling through Nevada on US 50 as opposed to I-80 or I-15 must be a tourist. This book gets granular for you.

I am seriously addicted to these Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology books. They lead you by milepost on such wonderful tours. You'll want to grab your camera, rock hammer and pocket protector, and hit the road with this one.

There are a lot of excellent maps in this spiral-bound book. The Great Basin offers many surprises to those who leave the Interstate. Enjoy.

I have a confession to make. When I live in a place that has ice and snow on the ground for twenty-something days; the temperature hovers around the cold mark (anything below 50 degrees Fahrenheit;)and my home heating bills are larger than my mortage payment, I frequently contract cabin fever. Symptoms include, but are not limited to, looking at maps, howling at the moon (when available), chasing parked cars, and reading travel books. I know, I know, it's only the beginning of winter and readers are typically not standing in line to get tickets for their summer vacations. However, to my surprise I find that a number of libraries have very popular travel programs that start in January. Could it be that others are afflicted with this seemingly incurable malaise? Thus, you can imagine my delight in finding a copy of this wonderful travel book. My wife and I traveled U.S. Highway 50, christened "The Loneliest Road in America" by Time magazine, across Nevada a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, while we had a number of obligatory travel books of this region, this one was not available. I can't believe how much we missed! Since it was published by the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, it is a specialized travel book. But don't let that fool you. While it is chock full of information on the geology, flora, and fauna of the region it is so much more. In addition to being highly readable it has 70 color photos, 170 black & white photos and an abundance of illustrations, maps, and sketches. The book takes the traveler along this historic Lincoln Highway from Carson City to Baker and introduces you to a unique Nevada adventure complete with national forests, deserts, and a National Park, Great Basin, that many travelers don't even know exists. About the only thing you will miss is the diesel fume spewing monsters pulling full grown homes and bumper-to-bumper traffic at every milepost. During our visit to Great Basin National Park we encountered perhaps a dozen cars. The book has a helpful road log keyed to highway markers. The trip will take you from ghost towns to Pony Express stations and so many side trips into areas of pristine beauty that you will be hard pressed to believe you are in Nevada, which is, after all just a lot of desert, right? You might even visit a lake that produces some of the best trout fishing in the State and stop for a picnic lunch under aspens that will take your breath away. How about stopping in Fallon and visiting the Naval Air Station and Strike and Air Warfare Center, the Navy's Top Gun training center. Riding the "Ghost Train" from Ely is a trip you won't forget. We discovered the works of Nevada poet Kirk Robertson in a small bookshop in Eureka, which has a beaufifully restored historic courthouse. Kind of a special two for one deal. If you are looking for the fastest way to traverse Nevada complete with four lanes of pavement, interchanges, and fast food stops, Highway 50 is not for you. On the other hand, if you have just a touch of adventure in your soul and don't mind beautiful scenery, historic ambiance, and lots of space, this is worth your time. I would not make this the only travel guide to take on such a trip but I would not leave home without it. Take heart fellow sufferers, spring and summer is coming and this book will remind you why the wait is worth it.

5 out of 5 stars A "must" for all Davy Crockett fans & frontier history buffs.......2000-06-06

For historians and biographers, the man who became an American legend has been difficult to define. William Chemerka's The Davy Crockett Almanac And Book Of Lists showcases a wealth of information on virtually every aspect of a life of dramatic accomplishments, helping the reader to discern between the Davy Crockett of history and the Davy Crockett of popular culture. Chemerka provides the Crockett Family Tree; his basic life story, and a large number of "Crockett Lists" ranging from Top Ten Crockett Books, Davy Crockett's First Railroad Journey, and The Davy Crockett Drive-In, to Davy Crockett Comic Books, Crockett in the School Books, and Other Published Deaths of Davy Crockett. The Davy Crockett Almanac is indispensable, "must" reading for all Davy Crockett fans and students of America's frontier history and heroes.

    4 out of 5 stars Crockett Almanac........2000-03-13

Fittingly dedicated to Fess Parker, the tall Texan and actor who led the Davy Crockett craze in the 1950s and whose image became emblematic of the historical frontiersman, this book covers Crockett "from A to Z" even in the literal sense, with a section so titled. Even in the first paragraph of the Acknowledgements, the author, with admirable and even enviable selflessness, recommends that the reader might investigate "...original works [i.e., sources] for a more comprehensive appreciation of the legendary frontiersman." This book thusly focuses as much on historical fact as on the legend and myth, and seems to reach an ideal balance between them, leaning in the direction of the former while retaining a solid link with the latter.

It's a virtual treasury of information, facts, tidbits and fascinating details that would be difficult, if not altogether impossible, to find in any other single volume. The author, an educator, discusses matters that would interest virtually anyone with even a peripheral curiosity about the American icon Davy Crockett specifically or in Western history generally. Operatively, the book covers Crockett in all his incarnations - from the historical and distinctive frontier personage to the popular cultural image. It also contains well-executed illustrations by various people, including artist Rod Timanus, author of the recently-published "On The Crockett Trail" (Pioneer Press, Union City, Tennessee). Among the most compelling illustrations is a photograph, ca.1932, picturing Crockett's last home.

One entry states that during an 1834 visit to Camden, New Jersey, Crockett was pickpocketed of nearly $200 (in purchasing power an enormous sum in those days). Considering that the state has been the occasional but unjustified subject of jibes, it seems a testament to the integrity of the book that its author freely acknowledges that the offense against Crockett was committed in the author's own home state.

It may be hard to believe that sometimes authors become jaded from experience of publication, but we're fortunate to have a book like this from someone who clearly appreciates tangible and even tactile connections with history. We needn't read between the lines to see how he felt when he himself had the opportunity to handle one of Crockett's own rifles. This enthusiasm is reflected in his book, which was evidently thoroughly researched by consultation of documents and people (including historian Bill Groneman), and is effectively a setting of historical gems about Crockett and all that goes with him.

What you'll want to know about Davy Crockett, the historic icon and the man of popular 20th-century fame, you'll find here; those who want further information will be pointed in the right direction. There are interesting references to the Crockett of prevalent imagination, such as a Frankie Avalon quote from John Wayne's film "The Alamo," and the name of the actor who portrayed Crockett in a virtually forgotten but enjoyable 1956 film, "The First Texan," which starred Joel McCrea as Sam Houston.

The book also constitutes a "Who's Who" of Alamo people. One warranting mention is Ray Herbeck, Jr., Associate Producer of the film, "Alamo . . . The Price of Freedom," and the man responsible for "Remember the Alamo! - Mexican & Texian Music of 1836," a recording of music played on period instruments, and to which this reviewer was introduced at San Jacinto (coincidentally on the eve of the 123rd anniversary of Santa Anna's death), through the kindness of Western historian J.R. Edmondson, author of "The Alamo Story: From Early History to Current Conflicts" (recently published by Wordware / Republic of Texas Press, Plano, Texas).

Chemerka's book follows the same format as his previous volume, "The Alamo Almanac & Book of Lists." That he follows it effectively is meant even literally here: the new book is indeed as effective as the former one.

Physical characteristics can be surprising. Among the most personally intriguing entries in Chemerka's book are the titillating physical descriptions of David Crockett by those who actually saw him. Since he and the other Alamo defenders all lived and died before the advent of the camera, these contemporary descriptions, though few, are of significant historical value. While photographs of Johannes Brahms show that his hands were disproportionately large (which helps explain some of the forbidding stretches and leaps in his piano compositions), a description of Crockett the man states, "...his hands & feet were particularly small for a man of his appearance and character..." The physical descriptions of him go on to say, in part, that he "...was about six feet tall and 200 pounds, no surplus flesh, broad shouldered, stood erect, of great physical strength, fine appearance, swarthy complexion, high cheek bones, long, dark hair, his cheeks mantled with a rosy hue, eyes vivacious, and in form, had no superior." It's noteworthy that in this book there are two portraits which seem in particular ways to correspond to at least some of the facial descriptions: one is a painting of Crockett on p.144 - and the other is the photograph of the author himself on the back of the book. The similarities in countenance are of course incidental but they're certainly fitting, since the features, if not altogether "matching," seem to coincide. It takes little imagination to mentally superimpose both images without conflict. Mindful of this, perhaps it's no accident that the book's author is a man whose passion for Crockett and his era is evidently manifest, and possibly even unparalleled.

The few inconsistencies in spellings (Rembrandt "Pearle" instead of Peale) are merely tpyos, clearly occurred in the typesetting and in context mean little. Nothing is "perfect" except perhaps in the mind of the poet.

For readers interested in Crockett the man, this book is superb material and is, in a phrase, highly recommended as an invaluable "at your fingertips" tool - for anyone - both as a reference work and as very enjoyable, even fascinating and, perhaps more importantly, enlightening reading. - - JEFFREY DANE

5 out of 5 stars An excellent source of information.......2000-04-06

I enjoyed the well researched informative facts provided by the author. Mr. Chemerka has not tried to provide an in depth analysis of the fictional and non-fictional accounts although he does take editorial license here and there. Nonetheless, it is valuable to any Alamo researcher.

    4 out of 5 stars ALAMO ALMANAC........1999-07-25

When an author combines research findings with the aggregate information and knowledge born of his or her background, experience, environment, upbringing and training, the fortunate result can be a book like this one. It's content is a near-ideal melding of an author's acquired professional skills and his evident personal predilections. To paraphrase Aaron Copland, the dean of American composers, "If it's in the writing, it's in the man." As we're often defined (or even judged) by our choice of friends, we're often best represented by the results of our own work.

David Crockett was a frontiersman and adventurer (and a hunter, farmer, businessman, veteran of the Creek Indian War, town commissioner, militia colonel and Tennessee state legislator), who served for a time as a United States congressman. He was not a congressman who spent time as a frontiersman and adventurer. The very existence of this book exemplifies the principle of priority, a concept from which many of us could learn. The author of this work has evidently set a goal, which he's clearly met, of producing a book that can be read and enjoyed by the reader, not merely examined and studied by the scholar (though even they should surely benefit from it). The author, an educator, discusses matters that would be of interest to virtually anyone with even an indirect interest in Western history.

It seems the book's intent is for expanse and diversity rather than depth. This is not a negative judgement but a positive observation: there's no other book quite like it so its singularity makes it quite special. Seek not here thy standard detailed biographies - thou shalt not find them. There are countless tomes about Western history generally, Texas history specifically, and the Alamo in particular with its countless sub-species (biographies of Bowie, Crockett, Travis, volumes about the collective defenders, their descendants, etc). This book provides something rather unique, which adds to its value: a compendium of fascinating details that would be difficult, if not altogether impossible, to find in any other single volume. It can, indeed, be a blessing to the researcher and surely a delight to the reader.

Of particular interest is the Alamo Chronology, offering a virtually year-by-year account of the location and its events, and presenting a veritable Alamo timetable in microcosm. The Alamo from A to Z, the book's longest section, offers data too abundant even to summarize here, and defies description. Suffice it to say it's a virtual treasury of information, facts, tidbits and fascinating details, allowing us to vicariously do our own excavations on the Alamo grounds. The section titled Alamo Lists includes (but isn't limited to) rosters of the defenders, the survivors, the couriers, the best Alamo books, and even the best actors in Alamo films. Operatively, the book covers the Alamo in all its incarnations - from the historical and iconic entity to its popular cultural image.

The book contains both photos and well-executed illustrations by various people. One warranting mention is the superb rendering by California artist, blade collector and Bowie historian Joseph Musso, picturing the three most prominent Alamo defenders: Crockett, Bowie and Travis. Outstanding and fascinating maps of the actual assaults are provided by artist Rod Timanus.

Perhaps the most compelling illustration, however, is the reproduction of an 1849 Daguerreotype. It's compelling because it offers us a literal glimpse into the past: it's the only known photographic image of the Alamo showing the chapel as it looked (if not literally, then surely effectively) at the time of the siege - that is, BEFORE its distinctive hump was added to the upper façade by the U.S.Army in 1850. It seems more than just coincidence that the Alamo is the subject of this, the earliest datable photographic image taken in Texas and a mere 13 years from glory. By its very immediacy, the appearance of this picture in William Chemerka's book seems to enlarge and strengthen the links in the chain that binds us to our own history.

One can easily foresee the entirely predictable objections and ludicrous reactions the book will prompt from some quarters. We can safely anticipate the claim by some academics that it's not source material for scholars. Well, maybe this book isn't SUPPOSED to be. - - We must recognize that some people are hard of reading, being unable (or worse, unwilling) to gauge a finished, integral work by its own intrinsic value, and to understand and appreciate it for what it is. They prefer instead to view it tangentially, and to focus on what it is not. Alas this postural view is often taken in academe and is popularly known as a cop-out.

If this book isn't a be-all and end-all of Alamo history and won't be everything to everyone, it's because it isn't its purpose. It's not for those who get annoyed because goldfish aren't trained to do tricks or because dogs don't live in fish tanks. Those who can gauge something on its own merits are the exceptions, not the rule - but they're the gems in the settings of an author's readership. Those who would benefit most by this volume and would respond most positively to it are those with the prudence and integrity to form their own opinions and draw their own conclusions. This principle brings to mind a relevant remark, made by Beethoven: when asked by the violinist Radicati about "the meaning" of the composer's late string quartets (virtually avant-garde music in his day), Beethoven replied in the most matter-of-fact manner and without a trace of conceit, "Oh, those are not for you, but for a later age."

Those academics who might not consider the contents of this book "source material for scholars" would be revealing more about themselves than about the book. For readers, it's superb material and is, in a phrase, highly recommended as an invaluable "at your fingertips" tool - for anyone - both as a reference work and as very enjoyable, even fascinating and, perhaps more importantly, enlightening reading.

An informative, idiosyncratic, and often hilarious collection of American political trivia, compiled by the editors of George magazine. Examples of what's inside: Elections Bill Clinton lost (there are five), Mario Cuomo's list of the best politicians who never ran for president, states that have most often voted for the winning presidential candidate (New Mexico is 21 out of 22) and the losing presidential candidate (Louisiana is 28 out of 45), Bob Dole's 10 nicest things about not being an elected official (reason 9: Favorite TV shows no longer interrupted by own campaign ads), and asteroids named after U.S. political figures. The best is a list of presidential insults. John Quincy Adams on Andrew Jackson: "A barbarian who cannot write a sentence of grammar and can hardly spell his own name." Teddy Roosevelt on Woodrow Wilson: "infernal skunk in the White House." Calvin Coolidge on Herbert Hoover: "That man has offered me unsolicited advice for six years, all of it bad." This book is enormous fun for political junkies. --John J. Miller

                5 out of 5 stars A valuable resource .......2005-09-12

I am constantly going to this book to look up things about American Politics. There is a lot of information that crosses many different areas. There is the Congress, The Presidency, and the Supreme Court. There is a lot of information about past Presidential campaigns which is interesting.

There is also a large portion of the book called Pop Politics that includes trivia on what actor played what President, what Politicians were on T.V. shows and many other things. There is also a guaranteed thought provoker of a chapter about Political Prisoners in America.

The book has a lot of information about the 105th Congress (1997-99) which dates the book a little, but most of the information is historical so it doesn't matter that much.

This is a very good resource. There is an introduction by the late John F. Kennedy Jr.

4 out of 5 stars Maybe not so accurate.......2001-07-30

This book is not only informative it's fun. I did however, find a mistake. The order of Presidential Succession is incorrect. Two of the Cabinet members have been omitted: Defense and Commerce. This makes me wonder the accuracy of the information.

4 out of 5 stars Worthwhile despite Errors and Omissions.......2001-02-02

This book is worth reading despite some flaws. One error occurs on page 167 where the book describes Jim Lightfoot as being a U.S. Senator from Iowa. Congressman Lightfoot never held that position. On page 197, Mario Cuomo is said to have become New York Governor in 1982. The correct year is 1983. On page 210, Ulysses Grant is incorrectly labelled the incumbent president in 1880. Rutherford B. Hayes was President that year, not Grant. On page 306, (future) Vice President Elbridge Gerry's name is reversed. On page 351, Governor William S. Taylor of Kentucky is listed as having been a Congressman from Kentucky. The Biographical Directory of the US Congress does not confirm this. On pages 72 and 73 is the list "Presidents' Relatives Who Wrote Books". One important one left out is "My Brother Lyndon", by Sam Houston Johnson. This book was written by LBJ's brother after Johnson left the Presidency. There are other lists which are also incomplete.

                  3 out of 5 stars A Place Called Heatbreak.......2001-09-18

'A Place Called Heartbreak' is a fairly good book.I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to know about the Vietnam War. I gave the book three stars. My favorite part was when Fred Cherry was finally let out of prison. He was an airforce pilot for the USA. He was captured when his plane was shot down by a North Vietnamese soldier. While he was in prison he taught the other prisoners "tap." Soldiers had to learn a tap code to communicate with other prisoners in different cells. That was pretty cool. This book was okay. Try it.--Baseball Stud

                  5 out of 5 stars Engrossed!.......2000-05-11

Engrossed is the only possible description for my boys when reading this book. The chapters are short enough to keep a reluctant reader going, the black & white illustrations add to the story. Myers' historic notes at the end add value to a well disguised history lesson. My boys are ages 13 and 12.
