Book Description
Cumberland Island is the largest and most beloved of the Georgia barrier islands. Although it can be reached only by boat, more than forty thousand people make the trip each year to enjoy the island's natural splendor and solitude. As on most barrier islands, human activity has long been a shaping force on Cumberland. It is among the few islands, however, that we have let return to a relatively natural state. With its expansive oceanfront beaches, dunes, interior maritime forests, freshwater ponds, tidal creeks, and salt marshes, Cumberland is all the more special for its restored natural environment.
In The Seasons of Cumberland Island, naturalist and photographer Fred Whitehead captures the unique allure of the island's flora and fauna in 118 stunning full-color photographs. Moving through seasons punctuated by the comings and goings of such animals as the migratory birds that pass through in autumn and spring and the loggerhead turtles that nest here in summer, the photographs reveal the subtle but important effect of cyclical change on the island's ecosystem. The lush color images, which are often paired with detailed captions, include spectacular views of muscadine vines and Virginia creeper in autumn, a prowling bobcat in winter, a nest of pileated woodpeckers in the spring, and a green tree frog announcing an impending summer rain shower.
Featuring an introduction on the importance of the complex ecosystems of barrier islands like Cumberland, the book informs as it enchants. Here is a stunning tribute to Cumberland's sublime treasures that also serves as a thoughtful reminder to respect and protect the wildness of our barrier islands.

Outstanding photos of a magical Cumberland Island.......2006-02-05
I recently returned from a visit to Cumberland Island and I had already purchased and admired all of the photos in the book. When I returned from my trip I again looked at the book and it made the island come alive again in my mind. The photographer has captured the entire essence of Cumberland Island and brings it to life. The book gives a preview of all of the things the island has to offer: wildlife of every description and vegetation scenery that takes you back in geologic time before man set foot on the island. The photos in the book show the diverse creatures such as deer (including 2 white ones); alligators, racoons, wild turkeys, bobcats, birds, waterfowl, armadillos, pigs and wildhorses (not native to the island) etc. The diverse vegetation and wildlife is featured by seasons in the book. The photographer is a wildlife expert and also gives tours to the guests of the incredible and comfortable Greyfield Inn. Buy the book and then go see the island!

Hikers helper-separates the chaff from the wheat.......1998-10-17
Details the flora and landscape of the hike; degree of difficulty of hike in a straight forward, useful manner. I have used the book for several day hikes in the Lake Tahoe and Bay Area and the book has helped make the hikes enjoyable and fun. Heed the degree of difficulty listing, they are accurate.
BUY IT and ENJOY!!!!!!!!
Excellent guide and timesaver for the northern Sierra.......1997-10-31
I had a short time to spend in the backcountry and needed some succinct guidance for choosing the best trail for my time and experience levels. The 100 Hikes guide filled the bill - got me from Reno to the Sand Ridge Trail. The trail guide and map was way ahead of the material I picked up at the Forest Service Ranger station and I had a great two nights on trails that were just right for the equipment I had with me. Well written, guide from guys who've obviously been there on the ground. I'd even buy the book someday if the library copy is checked out next time I'm heading for northern California. An excellent book on eskimo life.......1998-12-09
I read this book many years ago as a child on a recommendation from my father. He gave me his copy of the book before he died. The book's details on Inuit life and how it is affected by the inclusion of the sailors makes for great reading. This should be required reading in school and for any Sociology course.
Fascinating juxtaposition of European and Eskimo culture........1998-07-08
James Houston, a noted glass designer (for Steuben) lived among the Eskimos as a civil servant for the Canadian government. He helped them organize coops for the distribution of their art. This book is about the sailors who are taken in by Eskimos after their ship sinks. It vividly contrasts the highly organized and friendly Eskimo society with the unruly and often cruel code of the European seafarer. Great reading from an author who knows! Also recommend his Spiritwrestler.

Mention the Arctic and most people think of the North Pole, polar bears, Eskimos, and a whole lot of ice and snow. That's fine, as far as it goes, but there's a lot more to the Arctic and subarctic than Nanook of the North. Consider, for example, the Ainu people of Hokkaido, an island of Japan, or the Chukchee of Siberia; add in the native peoples of Greenland, Canada, and the Aleutian Islands and you've got a vast geographical area diverse in cultures. Different as the traditions and individual ways of life might be from tribe to tribe and region to region, there are some fundamental similarities in Arctic peoples' experience--a harsh and unforgiving environment, hunting and fishing as a way of life, and, above all, a rich oral tradition. It is with this oral tradition that Howard Norman is chiefly concerned. He has collected 116 folktales from a variety of northern peoples and organized them into categories such as "Tricksters and Culture Heroes," "Shaman Stories," and "Stories of Strange and Menacing Neighbors," among others. Each section is prefaced with a short introduction that provides a solid basis for understanding important themes. Whales, skunks, cannibals, and ghosts are just some of the characters that populate these tales from the top of the world.

Tales of Shaman, Spirits and Animal People.......2003-12-25
Having covered Native American, Arabian, Scandinavian and African myths, legends and stories, Pantheon turned their attentions to the Arctic circle and produced this wonderful little gem. In this book, the tales of the Siberian Yukaghir and Chuckchi, Ainu (caucasian natives of Japan) and Native Americans of Alaska and Canada are covered. There are lots of stories from the Inuit, Aleut and other such Nations in particular. As with the other Pantheon books, the chapters are divided into major themes including Village Life, How Things Became the Way They Are, Culture Heroes/Tricksters, Shamanism, Animal People, Monsters and Spirit, Hunting Stroies and Marriages Between People and Spirits. The Culture Hero/Trickster section in particular is enjoyable as it covers the Smart Beaver Cycle of the Tagish, the Glooskap tales of the Micmac and the Wenebojo Cycle of the Chippewa, but all the stories are wonderful. Readers will become aware of the deep cultural heritage of the Native peoples of the far north as they go through the book, seeing the many major connections (like Big Dreaming, Shamanism and so forth) as well as cultural differences which made each Nation unique, with their own beliefs and customs as rich and varied as those of Europe. In addition, many of these stories, such as those of the Ainu, are so obscure that its not likely that you will find them elsewhere.
Two maps, one of the Arctic region of North America, and the other of the Sub-Arctic region of North America, round out the book. I found it to be an excellent book and one of the few of it's kind readily available. My only complaint would be that nothing of the Saami (Lapps) was presented, and there were only a few tales from Siberia. Still, those are but minor issues considering how wonderful this book is regardless. Those with an interest in Native American (or general indigenous) culture, Shamanism and just mythology and religion in general should certainly look at this book. Its out of print now, but its still worth looking for if you can find it.

This book provides the first comprehensive history of the Native Peoples of North America from their arrival in the western hemisphere to the present. It describes how Native Peoples have dealt with the environmental diversity of North America and have responded to the different European colonial regimes and national governments that have established themselves in recent centuries. It also examines the development of a pan-Indian identity since the nineteenth century and provides a comparison not found in other histories of how Native Peoples have fared in Canada and the United States.

Book Description
"Everything started to go wrong the day we dragged the Eskimo up in the net off Malin Head. I wasn't long back from Alaska, and it seemed as if he must have followed me halfways around the world. My initial instinct was to pull his chewed up corpse free from the mountain of fish and to roll him overboard, to let him sink back into the depths of the ocean where he had first appeared from, to watch him slip beneath the waves as if he had never surfaced in the first place. Knucky even suggested as much."
When Jim Gallagher hauls the body of an unknown Eskimo up in his nets off the North West Coast of Ireland, the murky undercurrents of his own life get dragged to the surface. His obsession with finding out where the Eskimo came from, and how he met his watery death, fuses with his own search to understand his life in a small fishing village. Adrift in the mists of alcohol and poor health, Jim loses himself in mystery and subterfuge. Theresa, a returning immigrant, appears to offer the only hope, but as Jim sinks further all of his relationships are threatened. Drink, loneliness and the price of survival become the major themes in this subtly shaded and superbly handled literary debut from one of the best of the New Irish Writers.
Gerard Beirne is an Irish writer living in Canada. He was awarded the Sunday Tribune/Hennessy Best Emerging Fiction Writer and New Irish Writer awards in 1996. His work has been published in numerous journals including Stet-Irish National Literary Magazine, the Sunday Tribune newspaper, and broadcast on BBC Radio 3. His short story, Sightings of Bono, was adapted into a short film by Parallel Productions, Ireland, featuring Bono.
Customer Reviews:
The Eskimo in the Net.......2004-02-06
From start to finish, 'The Eskimo in the Net' by Gerard Beirne is an outstanding read. Never once does this book waver off course on its voyage to uncover the complexities of truth. Beirne has the rare gift of being both a superior storyteller and skilled craftsman.
After the main character, Jim Gallagher, hauls up a dead Eskimo in his fishing net off the coast of Northern Ireland, he sets out on a personal journey to find the origins of the unknown man. The side trips along the way make for fascinating reading: Jim's exploration of self, the unique power of friendship, the interplay of relationships and the mysteries hidden inside all of us.
I loved the way I got to know the characters in the book, not just as either good or bad but all the murky gray that made them seem truly human. I felt a part of the intimate lifelong friendship between Jim, Knucky and Frances and struggled along with them through the pages.
Five stars for this beautifully written novel! This is a book you will want to read over and over again.
How to Get Tangled Up with "The Eskimo in the Net".......2004-01-31
If you want to get caught by this quirky, evocative novel, all you need to do is read the first line. "Everything started to go wrong the day we dragged the Eskimo up in the net off Malin Head." Who could ask for a more intriguing opening sentence? Right from the first scenes, set aboard Knucky's fishing boat, willing readers get entangled in the snarled-up mess. As the two Irish fishermen, Jim Gallagher (the main character) and Knucky (one of Jim's best friends, and present employer) verbally wrestle over what to do with the partially decomposed body, Beirne lures his audience into the obsessive darkness which permeates the novel. His graphic descriptions of the Eskimo's corpse resting amongst the piles of wiggling fish and web of netting are both fascinating and morbid. Throughout the book, he maintains this clear, strong narrative voice. He also paints a memorable picture of the bleak ruggedness of the Irish coast, with its isolated fishing villages, where people are pushed, or driven, into alcoholic binges and stange sadness. Even the weather, with its constant damp, and unrelenting wind, emerges as another hard-nosed, but compelling, character. When Jim realizes the Irish authorities do not plan to fully investigate the circumstances leading to the Eskimo's death, he sets out on his own voyage of fixated, and often intoxicated, discovery. Beirne portrays the stumbling uncertainties of Jim's search with a compassionate, and sometimes surprisingly comic, voice. The scenes in the local pubs, encounters with Irish authorities, and glimpses into life abroard a Russian fishing trawler are especially captivating. Throughout the novel, the tangled mysteries of life's choices, of staying or leaving, of acting or not acting, of loving or refusing to love, are explored. Whether Jim likes it or not, he is being pulled along to a revelation of the truth about his own life. With a cast of deftly drawn characters, and enough mystery, death, drugs, and sex to sustain even the most jaded reader, Gerard Beirne creates an engrossing world of convoluted love, friendship, and compulsion, set in an unforgiving environment. It is a strong debut novel for a very fine writer, and sure to be well-received in North America, the British Isles and Europe.

Wonderfully written, which older readers may appreciate..........2006-07-30
I read "Harpoon of the Hunter" for a children's literature class, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's not a book that I would recommend to younger readers- not only because it really communicates in a strong, vivid manner the harshness and danger of Kamik's world, but also because there's a complexity to the way it deals with the themes of struggle and survival. The ending especially invites meaningful discussion, something that older readers may find more interesting. Mostly, however, the real treasure about the book, and what ultimately makes it satisfying, is how it is written. Plain, bare, simple words and style are appropriately chosen to convey the harsh, elemental nature of Kamik's struggle and world. In this way, Markoosie has written a book rich in atmosphere.
Grim tale of survival in a harsh environment........1999-01-25
While I think this was a good book, I would caution people to read it before choosing it for young children. It is a realistic portrayal of life, and death, in an arctic environment. There are a number of fairly graphic descriptions of people and animals dying and a general attitude of despair. However, it is an authentic piece of Eskimo fiction describing life in the Canadian Arctic before the coming of the white man. I would recommend this book to people who want a more realistic depiction of life than what Disney provides.
