The Cougar Almanac.......2006-03-22
I was not only disappointed with this book, I was surprised by the propaganda type nature of its content. While well written, the known facts about the animals were skewed or omitted, replaced, instead by the author's decidedly biased opinions. I was further disheartened by the lack of any of the definitive biological works on these great cats in the works cited. He pulls some information from the work of Hornocker, but fails to include findings that don't fit the authors point of view. While taking the books published date into account,it still failed to offer findings of recent studies on the cats. I purchased this book in hopes of using it in a college paper and found it fell short of current facts, instead relying on personal point of view that is too subjective to include in any biological paper that is concerned with the truth. My biggest fear is that someone reading this book will mistake it for a completely factual work. Furthermore, his obvious dislike of hunters and his degrading belief that it is based on lower moral standards is enough to repel most open minded readers. It might be considered low morals to not print the facts that he claims do not exist.
Informative but preachy.......2004-12-29
This book is a survey of the cougar's natural history, including its habitat, distribution and behavior. The material is interesting, well written, and informative, and the book's many photos (some in color) are excellent. Unfortunately, the author's analysis of mankind's relationship to the cougar is a formulaic, cliche-ridden sermon that reprises an ever popular eco-myth. His essential premise -- yawn, we've heard this before -- is that Native Americans lived in reverential harmony with cougars until Europeans arrived to despoil the Americas. As a result, cougars - and other wildlife - have been pushed to the brink of extinction, and so right-thinking people must "bring cougars back" by resisting their ignorant neighbors' hysterical demands for cougar extermination. If you are an eco-religionist, you may enjoy hearing this familiar sermon preached again. But if you are searching for facts and an objective analysis of a more complex reality, then this book falls short. For example, although the author cites the research of Maurice Hornocker (perhaps the world's foremost cougar biologist), he fails to mention that Hornocker has said, "There are probably more lions in North America now than when Columbus hit our shores..." This hardly supports the author's "brink of extinction" hysteria. Similarly, the author's "blame-it-on-the-europeans" story-line fails to acknowledge that John Muir - a Scot who immigrated from Europe to America as a boy - launched the modern environmental movement by writing wilderness-advocacy books that were hugely popular with his Victorian audience. Nor does the author mention that broad public support for the preservation of wilderness existed by the mid-19th century (think of Thoreau, who reminded us that "In wildness is the preservation of the world"). So the actual facts regarding Europeans' impact on North American wildlife (and of America's attitude toward wilderness) is both more positive and more complex than the author's simplistic, stereotyped claims admit. A special problem with this book is its analysis of cougar attacks, which promotes a misleading and potentially dangerous theme. The author states that it is "contrary to the cat's nature" for cougars to attack people - a claim which must seem truly bizarre to cougar victims. And although the author grudgingly concedes that attacks have occurred (and are apparently increasing in frequency), he minimizes them by noting that many of the attacking lions may have been too sick to hunt for their "normal prey". Or they were females who were only protecting their young. But while the author attempts to validate these views by referencing the research of Paul Beier (another distinguished cougar biologist), he fails to mention that the data actually show that a large fraction of attacks are made by healthy, unprovoked cougars who clearly regard humans as prey. And although Beier's data record a few attacks by female lions with cubs, they do not show that the attacks were meant to protect the cubs. As a result of such flaws, this book is a distinctly mixed bag. It contains many interesting facts, but the author's analysis of them is often simplistic, and so his conclusions are sometimes mistaken. Let the reader beware!
Everything you wanted to know about cougars.......2001-01-17
This is a wonderful book! I've always been interested in cougars and now that they are showing up in my state where they haven't been spotted for a hundred years, I find the cats even more intriguing. Mr. Busch has written a great book and good pictures too!
short but sweet.......2000-09-06
Although this almanac is a bit on the short side, it is packed with information on the cougar, including a lot of information not found elsewhere. The photos are good, and the maps are fine, but it is the colorful writing that caught my eye on this one. Many almanacs are dry dry dry. This is one is not and should be purchased by anyone who loves the big cats.
author is biased towards houndsmen and hunters of pumas.......1999-02-04
buy a copy of harley shaw's "soul among lions" and you will have a better understanding of the puma's role in the west

Customer Reviews:
Very informative.......2007-08-13
I ordered several books for my grand daughter who was moving to Okinawa. She said that they were very helpful and made the transition easier.
An excellent book with misunderstood humor.......2007-05-03
Having known Sean Bramble since 1989, when he got me hooked on Strat-o-Matic Baseball over the July 4 weekend as my co-worker for a newspaper in Maryland, I can safely say that anyone who thinks Sean does not like Japan, or the Japanese, is dead wrong.
Sean has a very acerbic wit, and most of what he says and writes is tongue-in-cheek. I also point you to his Japanese WIFE, daughter and son, whom I refer to as Mini-Gaijin-Me, as evidence that he most likely doesn't hate the Japanese. Sean is a lifelong Monty Python fan, just like myself, and his humor reminds me of it at some times. And yes, some of the things one sees in Japan are laughable by American standards (and vice versa, like our inability to work together when times get tough, at least since, say, 1945).
If he didn't like living there or interacting with the people of Japan, I don't think he'd have stayed there for 15 years. Just a guess.
The book (since this is a book review, after all) is well-written, typical of the way Sean describes things -- with a laugh waiting around every corner -- and covers a great variety of things. In having the chance to speak with him over the Christmas break about his work on it, I see just how much time he has devoted to explaining and describing the experience of a roundeyed galoot in the Land of the Rising Sun.
It's worth the time and money. Of course, having an autographed copy might make me a tad biased, but if this book stunk, I'd certainly tell you so. It's 240 or so pages of interesting and unseful information on what it's like to live in Japan as a westerner. While geared toward the British by its verbiage, it's still clear, understandable, and, as I've said, a good read. I finished it in two just-before-bed sessions, and was a real page-turner. Birnbaum sucks. Go Bramble!
PS - A note to Sean: I *WILL* bat Pee Wee Reese third, whether you like it or not. Nyaah!!
Negative!!!.......2006-08-22
This *is* in reference to the P. Sean Bramble version. It's awful. I don't know why they would hire someone so disdainful to write a book about another culture. I find myself skimming this book just to find one comment that DOESN'T bash the Japanese. I read this book because I was excited to move to Japan and I think I am going to stop reading it because it is having the complete opposite affect on me. The author finds the need to commment endlessley on his opinions on Japan, which are 99% negative. I am reading the entertianment section now where he drones on about how much he hates Anime (um, I think most of the population disagrees with you there!) and how stupid Japanese TV shows are (as if American news is not as biased and gossipy as Japanese). Seriously, don't buy this book unless you want to be talked out of going to Japan!
Author doesn't seem to like Japan very much.......2006-05-16
I'm an American, and I spent a few months living in Japan on my own a few years ago. I'm going back for a month-long trip soon. I picked up this book, thinking it would be helpful. Well, it does have some helpful information that you don't get from the usual Japan guides (such as the difference between uchi and soto), which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1 star. My complaint is that the author (P. Sean Bramble) doesn't seem to like Japan very much. The book is extremely negative about the Japanese. Yes, every culture has some downsides and Japan is no exception, but I found most of the book to be focused on the negative with very little written on the positive. I didn't realize it until I was 75% through the book and thought, "Why am I going to this awful place again?" Then it hit me, what a downer this book has been! I flipped back through what I had read and was surprised to see how much the author focused solely on negative aspects of Japan. So the problem is that I don't think he presents a realistic view of Japan and the Japanese culture - by overemphasizing the negative, he doesn't present a balanced view. For example, after you read the health care section (which says doctors suck and pharmacists are a joke and the dentists are awful), you would think Japan would be the worst place in the world for health care. That's simply not true - Japanese health care is excellent despite its flaws. Perhaps he was trying to injecting a little reality into the normally too-sunny descriptions of Japanese culture, but he goes too far the other way and in the process loses his ability to describe Japan accurately. I also question his ability to appreciate the nuances and beauty of Japanese culture -- this quote tells it all: "When people ask me to explain the real reason I've stayed here all these years, I shrug, scratch my head, and say 'Beer.'"
Clarification re multiple editions.......2006-03-22
Note P. Sean Bramble's comment that his authorship of this book began in 2004. Amazon has scrambled his edition with what seems to be a previous edition by Rex Shelley in 1992. The images and the "look inside" links take you back and forth to wrong web pages... The Shelley book, which seems to be the one to avoid, is ISBN 1558680713.
I will order what I hope is the Bramble book, and hope that Amazon straightens out this mess.

Book Description
Be IN THE KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Doing business across borders is very different from doing business across town–subtle and not-so-subtle differences in attitudes and etiquette play a big role.
Did you know?
• Bowing in Japan isn’t just bending at the waist; where you put your hands and how deep you bow makes a big difference!
• Don’t give gifts in groups of four or nine. “Four” and “nine” are unlucky because the words sound like “death” and “hardship” in Japanese.
• Don’t expect Japanese colleagues to come out and say “no.” They will usually say “maybe.”
In the Know in Japan helps you:
• Fit right in by understanding local manners, etiquette, and behaviors
• Navigate through everyday life with tips for the whole family
• Get an insider’s perspective on the social and business environment
The book includes a FREE 60-minute CD with the key phrases you need to make a great impression.
Customer Reviews:
Indispensible, yes, and an enjoyable work to read........2005-02-13
Reading this book will help prepare expatriates know about the culture and subcultures of the Japanese. The text comes with a 60-minute CD that can be read along with to practice some common and practical Japanese words/phrases.
This book does not prepare readers for writing or understanding kanji characters, but it can let you know how to say things like: Where are the restrooms? : Toire wa doko desu ka?, as well as times, calendar terms, business jargon and a bit more.
I think the value of this book lies in the fact that it is comprehensive. It begins with a nice little history lesson about the eastern archipelago. It progresses into conversational but well-written explanations of transportation, lodging, etiquette, politics and the psychological aspects of entering (and eventually leaving) such a different culture. It also has a nice little black-and-white map printed on the inside front cover.
This book is ideal for students, travellers, TEFL teachers and people who just want to learn about a very interesting society.
I enjoyed reading it and I think it's worth its price.

Highly Recommended!.......2001-04-17
Diana Rowland has written the classic guide to Japanese business etiquette and to the impact of Japanese culture on business and social interaction. Extremely thorough and fascinating, this guide covers all the traditions you need to understand to do business with the Japanese, in Japan or around the world. A good read even if you are just culturally curious, the book includes Japanese office layouts, diagrams showing where business guests should sit around the dinner table, and information on interpreting gestures at business meetings. Rowland covers the business and social roles of women and the difference between the real truth and the public truth. The book's final 50 pages provide a wide range of helpful, general resources, including important phone numbers and a glossary. We from getAbstract recommend this book to anyone doing business with the Japanese, anyone who plans to visit Japan for business or pleasure, and anyone who's just curious.

Book Description
In recent years, Japanese food has become a welcome part of the Western eating experience, adding a new and pleasurable dimension both to dining out and cooking at home. Yet while many Westerners have eaten Japanese food and have come to appreciate it for its attractive presentation and light, delicate flavors, relatively few are well acquainted with its origins and development, how it is traditionally served and eaten, and how it has evolved through history to fit into the life and culture of the Japanese people.
In this informative and gracefully written volume, renowned author and critic Donald Richie provides a lively examination of the popular foods of Japan, including not only well-established Western favorites like sushi, tempura, and sukiyaki, but more esoteric fare. Oikefugu, the highly-prized blowfish that can be deadly if not prepared properly, and unagi, the delicate grilled eel that represents one of the pinnacles of Japanese cuisine. The unlikely reasons for the popularity of deep fried pork cutlets (tonkatsu) in a non-meat-eating culture, the special place of noodles in the Japanese food pantheon, the varieties of forms in which rice can be found, from stuffed riceballs (onigiri) to pounded cakes (mochi)--all these and more are revealed in Donald Richie's engaging anecdotal style. Sections on Japanese pickles, sweets, sake, and tea complete this captivating survey of the delights of the Japanese table.
Whether you are contemplating a trip to Japan, a visit to the nearest Japanese restaurant, or a foray into cooking with Japanese ingredients yourself, these fourteen excursions into the world of Japanese food make it possible for you to approach its varied delights with confidence, understanding, and unending pleasure.

Japanese Food Explained.......2007-02-17
Donald Richie first went to Japan in 1947 as part of the American Occupation Forces. He soon fell in love with Japanese culture and decided to make Japan his home. Richie has lived in Japan for more than fifty years and is best known as the foremost Western critic of Japanese Cinema.
Donald Richie has carved out a niche as the great "explainer" of Japanese culture. "A Taste of Japan" is Richie's attempt to explain Japanese food to a Western Audience. He dedicates chapters to such topics as Sushi, Tonkatsu, Fugu and Tempura. Each chapter tries to explain what each of these foods means to the Japanese. If you are looking for a cook book or an etiquette guide, this book is not for you. The value of this slim and entertaining volume is as guide to food and its relationship to the the Japanese people.
Not just sushi!.......2006-06-17
I was introduced to this book during a course that was an overview of Japanese food. I find it to be quite readable, and the photography to be incredibly helpful with the explantions. Some of the information is slightly dated at this point, especially in the sections on sushi and sashimi. This book was so helpful to me, that I gave it to my parents as reading material as they were convinced I would eat nothing but sushi while studying in Japan.
Graceful essays.......2001-01-01
A long-time resident of Japan, Donald Richie fondly explores the relationship of Japanese foods to Japanese history and culture in a series of graceful, eminently readable essays. If you want to know how tempura came to Japan, why the Japanese play Russian roulette with fugu (blowfish), or why riceballs are standard picnic fare, this is the book for you. (Note: This book does not contain any recipes.)
Fabulous introduction to Japanese eating culture.......1997-07-24
This book is a great introduction to the culture
of eating and drinking in Japan. The colour
photographs are sensational and the text is clear
and well laid out. By reading this book I have
been able to get much greater pleasure from
eating and preparing Japanese food.
