Book Description
Edible wild plants, mushrooms, fruits, and nuts grow wild along roadsides, in country fields, and in urban parks. All manner of leafy greens, mushrooms, and herbs that command hefty prices at the market are bountiful outdoors and absolutely free for the taking. But to enjoy them you must know, when to harvest, how to recognize, and how to prepare and eat them. The Complete Guide to Edible Wild Plants, Mushrooms, Fruits, and Nuts provides everything you need to know about these wild treasures. Included is information on the most commonly found of these wild comestibles, going beyond a field guide's description to provide folklore and mouth-watering recipes for each entry, such as wild asparagus pizza, fiddlehead soup, blackberry mousse, and elderberry pie.
This fully illustrated guide is the perfect companion for hikers, campers, and anyone who enjoys eating the good food of the earth. With The Complete Guide to Edible Wild Plants, Mushrooms, Fruits, and Nuts in hand, you'll never walk through a field again without casting your eyes about with dinner in mind.

Completely incomplete.......2005-01-16
It's amazing how 195 pages can contain information about all wild foods (of North America?) complete with descriptions and from field identification to its uses to the kitchen. Makes no mention of ethical harvesting (photos of ginseng and her stories of the market price of ginseng actually work against the spirit of wild foods) nor warnings of poisonous lookalikes (rendering the book dangerous). Never to be bought or caught holding a copy, so please be discreet if you want to find out for yourself in a library or bookstore.
Book Description
There is no easy was to identify grasses. And no one understood this better than H.D. Harrington, who observed thousands of students struggle and learn. His clear, concise, and well-organized guide will continue to be a basic and essential text for use in the classroom or in the field. The book contains over 500 drawings and an illustrated glossary.

Poor book.......2007-08-29
With this book, you will know all about how to identify a grass, and not be able to identify a single one. It reminds me of the new husband who sits on the edge of the bed and tells his new wife how wonderful it is going to be, but never gets around to it.
I returned the book.
Harrington Guides.......2007-07-15
There are a lot of plants that become colorful on the earth.
The plant that occupies the majority of Holocene place is a grasses and grasslike plants.
However, if it is not a specialist, the grasses and grasslike plant are not distinguished easily.
I am a farmer. The grasses and grasslikes were an annoying weed in me.
This book is a book that gave me new feeling to the grasses and grasslikes. It is not an interpretation weed in me any further any longer. I give my thanks to Doctor Harrington.
This book is as splendid as "Peterson first guides".
I call this book and "How to identify plants" "HARRINGTON MANUALS" !
A lot of information in nearly pocket size book.......2007-03-03
I finally bought a copy of this book for myself after having to borrow it from my plant friends and professors. They would not permit it out of their sight! Anyway it is a very good start to getting accustomed to grasses. They can be quite challenging to identify but this book is very helpful. It is pretty basic, to the point and recommended. It may be a bit challenging for a newbie, but really there is no easy way to learn plant terminology. This one is a good ice breaker!
How to Identify Grasses & Grasslike Plants.......2003-04-10
This book is practical and systematic. The topic is difficult, at best, and the author gives all the tools and understanding needed to build up your skills. As a consultant that works with native plant materials, I have found this book to be a useful field reference in separating out invasive species.
Best glossary.......2002-03-13
Not especially useful for beginner grass identification because concentrates on structural detail rather than overall appearance of growth. However, I recommend it for its excellent illustrated glossary.

Wildflower photos sets new standard for genre.......1999-09-13
Adams and Casstevens combine top-notch botanical briefs for each of the featured species with superb photographs. The botanical data is sufficient for appropriate identification and interesting notes about the plants are plentiful. The authors are commended for recognizing the importance of the composition of the photographs. They are not only useful for identification purposes, they are each masterpieces of photographic art. Adams teaches how to create similar photographs. Clearly this book was not just thrown together, but was carefully crafted by geniuses.
Book Description
First issued in 1957 by Swallow Press, this classic guide to the art of plant identification is now familiar to an entire generation of students. Harrington who was Professor of Botany and Curator of the Herbarium at Colorado State University, gives step-by-step instructions and definitions to help readers recognize and classify plants. The new printing has been reset and reformatted, and L.W. Durrell's drawings and glossary—more than 500 images—have been digitally enhanced for clarity.

a great book for amateurs and experts alike.......2007-03-24
I really liked this book and found it very reader-friendly and helpful. So it is not the newest book on the shelves, but that doesn't mean it is not a realiable and very useful resource. I had to buy this book for a class and never sold it back. Since that class I have used countless other guides on the same subject and when friends ask me what is a good starter guide book, with no hesitation I reply with How to Identify Plants by H.D. Harrington. Even today I still go back and reference it when using other field guides. This book sould be in every botanist's collection and makes a great starter for beginners.
Does the job -- but there are better books available.......2000-03-17
From the copyright date, this book was written in the fifties. The quality of the black and white photos is consistent with this guess, as is the rather pedantic style. There are also chapters on the structure of the nomenclature system, which is probably already well-known by most of the likely readers, and on how to collect plants, which may not be a good idea these days, at least for the rarer species.
For $6 more, I'd go for the similar book by James/Melinda Harris. More focussed; better illustrations; less pedantic style.
Book Description
A handy guide that uses flower structures, floral diagrams, and the floral formula technique to illustrate the elements common to the genera in more than 100 plant families native to North America or found here as introduced ornamental species. It is widely used both in the classroom and in the field.

Having a passion for plants I felt I needed to take it to the next level by being able to understand what I was really purchasing at garden nurseries. Most identifying tags on plants for sale list their family names which I did not understand so I had no idea what I was really buying! This book was easy to comprehend, making it easy for me to retain and use the information. This book has made me a more knowledgeable consumer not to mention that I can impress my friends!

Book Description
The forests of the earth are not only the source of a wealth of products such as timber, pulp, and charcoal, but are also of great importance in the absorption of carbon dioxide. Therefore, it takes little consideration to understand the dangers of overexploitation caused by economic development and population growth. With an eye on forest conservation and increasing carbon dioxide fixation, exploration of the extension of product life and the expansion of product recycling plays an important role in the sustainable utilization of forest products. To that end, technology must be developed both to make use of and to preserve the forests. The arguments put forward in this book are broad and diverse, but the contributors have a common goal - the sustainable exploitation of forest resources in tandem with a greater awareness of the environment. This approach is sure to be valuable to all those who are concerned with making the best possible use of the worldâs forest resources.

Better than other guidebooks.......2007-07-05
The National Geographic guidebooks for Madrid and Barcelona are better than other guidebooks. They are more fun to read before the trip because they give more in-depth information. They also provide walking tour directions and maps of interesting areas; for example, a walking tour of ancient Roman ruins in Barcelona.
