Customer Reviews:
after reading I purchased copies for all my nature loving friends.......2007-05-17
Have you ever heard of hypnotizing a frog by rubbing its belly? What about staying under 20 degrees above the horizon when trying to observe fish because of the way they see from underwater? What an awesome book for those who want their children to appreciate and participate in nature. Lots of party tricks like attracting fireflies with a flashlight and attracting birds by making a kissing sound on the back of your hand. An easy read, broken into short chapters, that offer lots of opportunities to see nature in a new light.
Recommended for kids and adults.......2007-04-17
If you have kids that are elementary school age, I strongly recommend this book. It will really help get your kids (and you) in tune with nature. Many of the things to do in this book I've discovered as a child on my own exploring nature. I know first-hand that these activities really work, and they're fun! Many of the activities have you interacting with animals in their environment, where you trigger their natural behavior. You (and your kids) become the observer and scientist. In the end, it's a great tool for parents to build a strong bond with their children, as most of the activities can be guided by an adult.
A door into nature.......2006-11-03
If you or a child enjoy the outdoors, this book delivers real surprises. From only one chapter, my daughter spent hours this summer talking to fireflies with their light cues. This purchase was well worth it, and would be a great book to take on camping trips (or anywhere else you will be outside). Any book that makes a teenager forget about computer time or TV is a little miracle, and Duensing's book is a special find.
Take it from a nature teacher!.......2004-01-16
I teach nature to boys in a summer camp and have used this book more than any other in my reference library...the pages are almost worn out! It's perfect in the language it uses and the activities are always fun. I have never recommended a book before, but couldn't pass up the opportunity to share this amazing book with other educators.
A creative collection of nature activities and observations.......1998-08-31
An unusual collection of information and learning activities concerning the world of nature which should appeal to both children and adults. The collection includes in-depth descriptions of many unexpected mysteries underlying seemingly every day natural occurances. Reading this book and participating in the described activities changes the way these events are understood while increasing understanding and enjoyment of observation of and participation in natural events. Good for all ages.

Book Description
From 1843, when the first collections were made, until 1987, when an amateur botanist discovered the only known Iowa site for spring ladies tresses, thirty-two species of orchids have been recorded in Iowa. The state’s wild orchids range in size from the three-inch-tall delicately blossomed nodding pogonia of the eastern woodlands to the three-foot-tall floral spike of the western prairie fringed orchid and in color from whites and pale pastels to buttery yellows and passionate pinks. Flower shapes run the gamut, too, from the tight-lipped parsimony of the fall coral-root to the cheerful roundness of the yellow lady’s-slipper. Along with superb color photographs of all thirty-two species, this latest addition to Iowa’s series of laminated guides includes common and scientific names, habitat (prairie, woodland, wetland) and distribution, height, approximate time of blooming, status, and potential for hybridization. Bill Witt devotes a separate panel to species missing and presumed extirpated; photos of orchids from nearby states illustrate these lost species. Because orchids have highly specific requirements for germination, growth, and reproduction, the conversion of natural lands for agricultural development has resulted in such loss of habitat that all but a handful of orchid species are now considered threatened or endangered; two orchid species are now known to live in just one site each; and three species have likely been wiped out. Orchids in Your Pocket is a welcome reminder of the beauty and fragility of these native species and their prairie, woodland, and wetland homes.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Guide Book for 1st timers and 100th timers!.......2000-04-19
I've been buying Birnbaum's Official Guide to Disneyland since 1995. Every year it gets better and better, and I look forward to a new yearly copy. We go to Disneyland 3-4 times a year so I'm pretty familiar with what attractions to avoid at what times, or where to escape the rain, and when NOT to do your shopping. Every year they make some changes and give you some new tips, or add new attractions or restaruants. Even if it is "official" it's a great guide book and worth reading. There aren't too many bad things to say about Disneyland, so there isn't really a point to buying an "unofficial" guide. I've never been disappointed with any of Birnbaum's Official Guides to Disneyland. They are extremely helpful in planning your day or week at Disneyland
Not as much as I expected........2000-03-07
The tips in the book were helpful, but I did expect more coupons. There were only 4 coupons, and I didn't need any of them. Would appreciate coupons from food places and a discount on daily entrance or 3-day entrance.
Birnbaum's Disneyland 2000.......2000-01-18
The tips in this book saved me over $200 on a Disneyland package by calling the hotel and NOT using a travel agent. This is a great well organized planner.
This was a wonderful book and guide.......1999-11-03
Disneyland is such a large place that i'd get lost without this book. It tells you everything from tips, to prices. This is surely like the Bible for the year 2000 in disneyland
A comprehensive, but homogenized, guide to Disneyland.......1996-09-03
If you've never been to Disneyland, this book is definitely
on the "must buy" list.
HOWEVER, because this book is the "official" blessed guide to
Disneyland, it tends to be uncritical, and doesn't
contain nearly as many useful insider tips as Selinger's
"Unofficial Guide to Disneyland." For a well-rounded
view, get both.

Fantastic reference for first time vistors!.......2002-02-14
If you have never been to Disneyland in Anaheim, CA, this book by Birnbaum is a nice, concise way to quickly get up to speed on the resort. After a major expansion in 2000-2001, Disney Imagineers have transformed the Walt Disney's original "Magic Kingdom" into a multiple-theme-park resort. Truly an insider's perspective, the book provides easy to follow (albiet optional) itineraries to both Disneyland and Disney's California Adventure; provides cost and recommendations for the restaurants in and around the parks; and lays out the various lodging options, both Disney and non-Disney. Returning Disney guests will most likely not find anything new or revealing in this volume; however, it serves as a wonderful refresher to what has changed since the last visit.
It is not accurate.......1999-12-14
I have been buying this book since 1992. They say in the book they are not in anyway writing their reviews under the eye of Disney. That is not true. There is nothing negative in the book. I am a regular visitor to Disneyland & there is alot of negative things to say about it...long lines, closed up restaurants, rides, shops, high prices, etc. I enjoy the book, but make it more correct & be honest!
Sold In Disneyland!.......1999-08-23
This is the in-house guidebook to Disneyland, the Happiest Place On Earth. As a result, it tends to be biased, uncritical, and unadventurous. Has some good information on rides and attractions that are not found elsewhere.
I kinda agree with the reader from Vancouver........1999-02-15
It's your average Disneyland book. Informative, with special attention to details. I have to admit, I agree that after reading this book, and Bob Sehlinger's Unofficial Guide to Disneyland 99' I liked the Unofficial Guide better, as it was more informative and helpful. Readers, if you are stuck trying to decide which of these two books to buy, go with the Unofficial Guide; I garentee your satisfaction. E-mail me with comments about which book you chose, and whether or not you liked it.
Helpful and very informative........1999-02-07
This series of books on both Walt Disney World and Disneyland by Birnbaum are excelent reference books for anyone planning to visit either place. It gives you an idea of how much it will cost for meals, logding and entertainment. As a long time, returning visitor to both WDW and Disneyland, I still find the books handy in planning my visits.
Book Description
This remarkable reconstruction of the sedentary, agricultural, but warlike life of the Huron underscores the importance of studying Huron life, since the Huron were wiped out by other Iroquoians in the 17th Century.
Customer Reviews:
A great study of the Huron Indians.......2004-02-09
This book was first published in 1969 as part of the Case Studies in Cultural Anthropology series. It is essentially an overview of all anthropolgical information known about the Huron Indians, who at the time of contact with Europeans in the early 1600's were settled in a relatively small tract of land between Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay. There are three main sources of contemporary information on the Huron, the writings of: 1) Samuel Champlain; 2) Gabriel Sagard; 3) The Jesuits (on the Jesuit Relations). All of these writings are incomplete in their observations and tainted by bias. But regardless of this, they provide us with a rare glimpse into the lives of Native Americans who had been little disrupted by direct contact with Europeans. Trigger does an excellent job of summarizing and interpreting the information from these sources, and does so in a highly readable manner. This book is by no means a dry academic work, but is rather a very accesable social and historical study, one that should be read by anyone with an interest in Canadian or Ontarian history.

The Huron Carol
ASIN: 0888997116 |
Book Description
One of the loveliest of all carols, the Huron Carol was written by Father Jean de Brébeuf, a French Catholic priest who settled among the Huron people in the early 1600s. Despite his missionary zeal, Brébeuf was sensitive to the Hurons's beliefs. He wrote the carol in Huron and incorporated the Huron landscape and flora and fauna into the telling of the Christmas story. Ian Wallace brings his gorgeous landscapes and cultural sensitivity to this beautiful and unusual Christmas song, which makes a thoughtful gift for both children and adults.

changes in Native American worldviews .......2005-03-29
Carpenter follows the various ways the Hurons and Iroquois tribes adapted to the activities and growing power, and in some cases the example, of the French and English in northeastern America and southern Canada in the early period of contact between them. Carpenter gets behind the devastating effects of alcohol, disease, warfare, and displacement to disclose and understand how these tribes tried to make sense of and adjust to these by modifications of their mythologies and related cultural factors. For instance, when the Indians became involved in fur trading, they "had to transform the beaver from a creature they accorded a measure of respect" because of its place in their myths and lore into a commodity. Similarly, the author goes into how Christianity affected the Indians' outlook when they did not convert outright to this religion spread by French Jesuits. The coming of the Europeans also changed the Indians' manner of warfare, from mostly skirmishes with little loss of life to an form of total war where villages were destroyed and their inhabitants taken into captivity. Carpenter is an assistant professor of history at Canada's U. of Saskatchewan whose work sheds light on the impact of Europeans on the minds and behavior of Native American tribes. Most of the scholarship in this area has looked to the external consequences such as drunkenness or migration; whereas Carpenter's gets to the changes in the fundamentals of the Native American's culture.

As good as it gets.......2003-10-01
This weighty book is superb reading. It covers the short and tragic history of the Huron people of the eastern great lakes from prehistory to their first contacts with the French in the early 17th century to their destruction as an independent people by Iroquois raids in 1649.
For anyone interested in the early contacts between native peoples and Europeans, the very early fur trade, early missionaries in the Americas, the conflict between new religions and old traditions this is essential reading.
