Customer Reviews:
A delight to find.......2005-08-01
I was delighted to find this book in the Hovenweep National Monument visitor centre bookstore. I had already photographed the wild flowers of Arches, Canyonlands and Colorado for my website. Now I could identify them. The book organises the flowers by colour which is good for an amateur like me. Now, I have to admit that I could not identify all the species I photographed, but I was pleased when I could. A big thank you to Damian Fagan for this book, I thought I might be a little bit too excentric hunting for new wild flowers in Canyondlands and Arches National Parks, even worse photographing wild flowers during my lunch hour while working in Colorado.
Absolutely delightful.......2000-06-22
The Colorado Plateau country of southern Utah, western Colorado, and northern Arizona is justifiably famous for its magnificent scenery, but the stunning wildflowers are less widely appreciated. Fagan's "Canyon Country Wildflowers" is the best guide to these treasures that I've yet seen. The photographs are absolutely top-notch (sometimes I browse the guide, just daydreaming...), often showing the entire plant in its natural habitat. Likewise, the collection is relatively complete. Flowers are organized by colors and typically easy to find. To top it off, the book is relatively compact and durable in the field. Nowadays, I don't head south without it. -William Adair, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Utah State University

Book Description
Swedish artist and sculptor Karl Momen, while driving through Utah on Highway 80 en route to California, saw a "vision" of a Tree in the midst of that barren desert. He put his "vision" to art form and during 1982-1986 created an 87' high sculpture in that desert and called it The Tree of Utah. He then donated his "Tree of Utah" to the State of Utah. Full color.
Seventy-Five full color photos accompany the written and photographic story of the creation of Tree of Utah. A portion of the proceeds from this book, both hard and soft cover, are being donated to the State of Utah for the ongoing care of the sculpture, a project in cooperation with the Utah Arts Council.
Momen's Tree of Utah is located in the barren wasteland where the crew of the Enola Gay practiced their bombing runs before proceeding on to Hiroshima, and where members of the ill-fated Donner Party were tragically delayed before their awful demise in the Sierra Nevada mountains. It is into this heroic and severe environment that Momen introduced his bold work. Ultimately it could be said that the Tree of Utah was created by an unlikely visitor from a foreign land, who, through his indomitable spirit and creative talent, paid a unique and unexpected tribute to the beauty of the Great Western Desert.

Sheds light on strange sculpure.......2005-06-17
26 miles away from the Utah/Nevada border, stands a sculpture that motorist drive by to look at. I always asked people what the sculpture was about. Researching it, I found this book that explained the history and the artist associated with it. The sculpture always seemed mysterious to me driving by it and not knowing what the heck it was. It's not the best looking thing (a tree with tennis balls?) but knowing the history behind it finally helped me out. This a good book for my collection.

Book Description
"You can lose yourself in a guide, but you won't get lost in the city." -- Town & Country
Once the most powerful city in the world, the heart of an empire that stretched from northern Africa to England, the Rome of today stands as an unforgettable reminder of the birth of Western civilization. Rome is a city unsurpassed in its legacy of art and architecture, yet its nightclubs and fantastic restaurants such has Alfredo's (with its signature fettucine) prove there is still plenty of life in this city that sits along the banks of the Tiber.
Everything you want to know about Rome is here: the Vatican ceremonies, secret gardens from a by-gone era, and walking tours from the breathtaking Piazza Novana to the Forum and Trastevere. Discover the beautifully proportioned piazzas, centuries-old churches, magnificent palazzos, and unsurpassed displays of mosaics, frescoes and statues, as well as the sidewalk cafes and shops along the Via Condotti. Enjoy the city's charm -- palm trees against crumbling ochre-colored walls, the golden vista of obelisks and domes at sunset, cats asleep in the Teatro Pompeii where Julius Caesar met his fate in 44 BC -- and marvel at its modern-day brio.
Customer Reviews:
Best comprehensive Rome travel book.......2003-01-27
As I stated in the review to the Paris Knopf guide, this set of books, for cities, is the best. This book has good maps of the Forums, and the Coliseum areas, and incredible amounts of historical information about almost every nook and cranny of the City. As I stated for this book-set before.
1) Go get a Michelin or other similar urban map, or buy one when you get to the City.
2) Dont use the hotels/restaraunts section of the book. Info is dated, but this is to be expected.
3) Get Rick Steves for tricks and shortcuts, the Knopf book wont give you these.
Enjoy!
Pretty and interesting, but not particularly useful.......2001-04-01
On a recent trip to Italy, we used four Knopf books (Italy, Venice, Rome and Florence). Each was lovely and beautifully illustrated. While they contained wonderful historic information they were pretty much useless for our travels. They contained little in the way of useful and practical information. I'll try Fodor's or others for future travels.
An Excellent Book, but Choose Wisely.......2000-02-17
This book is an excellent SUPPLEMENTAL guidebook to Roma. I've been twice now, and I'm about to go back again (this time with my wife!). The first time I went I took a Let's Go guidebook, the second time both LG & the Knopf guide. The Knopf guide is far superior in terms of background and relevance for the sites you will see, but if you're making reservations yourself you'll need another resource. I suggest Lonely Planet. (That Let's Go attitude only works so long - I've become disenchanted with the entire series, and have jumped ship to Lonely Planet - they're much more adult in presentation and style. I would not recommend Let's Go to anyone, even college students.)
Guidebook for the mind.......1998-07-16
Excellent historical and cultural introduction to the fountainhead of civilization. Great information on self-conducted walks filled with photographs, dates and erudite summary. The perfect companion to the intelligent visitor, or even resident! The only drawback to this atypical guidebook is precisely that; to those looking for where to eat, and which nightclub to go, look at the LetsGo.

Book Description
Feast your eyes on these amazing creatures before they disappear. This stampede of wild animals, from Chinese Alligator to Grevy’s Zebra, are so rare, they're all endangered. David McLiman’s bold and playful illustrations transform each letter into a work of art, graphically rendered with animal characteristics. Scales, horns, even insect wings transform the alphabet into animated life.
Once you take this eye-opening safari, you'll never look at letters or animals with the same way again. A striking work of art and a zoological adventure, Gone Wild is sure to be loved by children and adults alike.
Customer Reviews:
My baby loves the book.......2007-10-10
My 16 months old really enjoyed the book. She likes the graphics - which is done in black and white. We adults enjoyed the actual reading portion. The information is very educational. I can see my baby reading this book with a different perspective when she is older.
Beautiful Book.......2007-09-29
A truly beautiful and creative book that reminds us of those great typography designers such as Aldus Manutius, Nicolas Jenson or Claude Garamond. My child loved discovering wild (and sadly endangered) animals through the pages of Gone Wild.
Boring to children.......2007-09-11
This book was totally uninteresting to my grandchildren. It's a book that adults think will catch the interest of little ones and does not.
wild and wonderful.......2007-05-22
this is a wonderfuly illustrated book that manages to incorporate the many species of endangered animals names with the letters of the alphabet. While I bought it for my grandson(2) he is too young to appreciate it, so I have put it away for him to enjoy in the years ahead. I recommend it for the art work and for all the information that is on each page.
Worthwhile addition to the home or school library.......2007-04-13
Ostensibly about the alphabet, this book teaches so much more. Through clever illustrations, McLimans introduces children (and adults!) to a variety of endangered animals. Each page contains a stylized black-and-white illustration of the animal in the form of a letter along with a separate stylized red illustration of the animal. For instance, the head of the bald-headed Ukari is integrated into the shape of the letter U, while the entire animal is portrayed in red next to the letter design. Each page also contains facts about the animal (such as its natural habitat and potential threats).
Students, teachers, and parents interested in exotic or unusual animals or becoming more aware of environmental issues will find this book worthwhile. This book is appropriate for families or classrooms of mixed ages since younger children can practice their letters while older children can learn about these unusual and endangered animals.

Book Description
"Things are going wrong with our environment," writes John Terborgh, "even the parts of it that are nominally protected. If we wait until all the answers are in, we may find ourselves in a much worse predicament than if we had taken notice of the problem earlier. By waiting, one risks being too late; on the other hand, there can be no such thing as being too early." Terborgh's warnings are essential reading for all who care about migratory birds and our natural environment. Why are tropical migrant species disappearing from our forests? Can we save the birds that are left? Terborgh takes a more comprehensive view of migratory birds than is usual--by asking how they spend their lives during the half-year they reside in the tropics. By scrutinizing ill-planned urban and suburban development in the United States and the tropical deforestation of Central and South America, he summarizes our knowledge of the subtle combination of circumstances that is devastating our bird populations. This work is pervaded by Terborgh's love for the thrushes, warblers, vireos, cuckoos, flycatchers, and tanagers that inhabited his family's woodland acreage while he was growing upbirds that no longer live there, in spite of the preservation of those same woods as part of a county park. The book is a tour of topics as varied as ecological monitoring, the plight of the Chesapeake wetlands, the survival struggle of Central American subsistence farmers, and the management of commercial forests.
Customer Reviews:
The Real Silent Spring .......2007-06-14
Dry statistics such as the research showing 60% fewer migrant songbirds returning from the tropics have little impact when told even to conservation minded people. John Terborgh writes the description of the forests, fields and shores as they have changed with the decline in bird populations so that the loss is graphic based on the ground with field observations. This is more painfull and effective in impact and yet he provides inspiration to do something about it. This is a non-fiction book written by a biologist but he writes as well as any novelist creating an easily read, interesting and informative book.
Many of the chapters explain what is changing in areas that the birds from North America spend the winter. There are suggestions on how to promote better conservation practices as exist in countries like Costa Rica and what could be done to assist countries such as El Salvadore and Haiti where almost no natural habitat remains.
This book has had a major impact in my life and after reading it I have dedicated much time, energy and funding to projects that help people protect habitat. I have been suprised that many people that I have strongly recommended this book to have declined to read it fearing that they would be too depressed about the population and habitat studies that Terbough relates in this book. Don't make that mistake, this book will arm you with the information and the motivation you may need to make a positive contribution.
