Book Description
Including hikes near Anniston, Gadsden, Cullman, and Tuscaloosa, 60 Hikes within 60 Miles: Birmingham reaches out to provide the best day hikes within an hour's drive of the Magic City. From mine-riddled Ruffner Mountain in the Eastwood/Irondale area to the blast furnaces of Tannehill State Park, area hiking paths cross hidden ore shafts, pass over vast deposits of coal, and circle immense limestone quarries. In fact, hiking in Birmingham almost always leads back to three things: iron, coal, and limestone-the history of the Birmingham area and all facets of its growth are welded to its vast mineral wealth. Those hikes, though, that have a minimal connection to iron and steel, such as the wild trails of Talladega National Forest, stake their reputation on a fourth natural resource: rugged physical beauty.
Customer Reviews:
Well written but missing crucial GPS information.......2004-09-10
This book is very well written and gives great trail descriptions of some of my favorite hikes and some hikes that are sure to become my favorites.
I bought it but returned it to my local store when I discovered that the author did not include any GPS waypoint coordinates. This is unfortunate because the book description states that it contains GPS based maps. It does contain maps that were created using what must have been the author's GPS tracks/waypoints, but I am disappointed that the author did not share the GPS waypoints with his readers.
In this day and age, any new trail guide really needs to take advantage of the incredible capabilites of GPS technology and share waypoints with the reader. If the next edition of this book includes waypoints, then I will certainly buy it. If you do not use a GPS then you will find this book very helpful. If you do use GPS, you will feel somewhat disappointed that the author did not share his GPS waypoints.
Portico Birmingham Magazine.......2004-02-24
From our local publisher, Menasha Ridge Press, this is a welcome book for all nature-lovers in Birmingham. You'll find rural and urban hikes, wildlife hikes, historic hikes and more. There are ample illustrations and the book is attractive enough to lure you out of the house to get out and make use of the great weather we enjoy neary year-round (the dog-days of July and August not included).
Finally!.......2004-01-13
As a new citizen to Birmingham I was anxious to explore the city and its surroundings. After conquering the trails of Oak Mountain, Ruffner Mountain and Little River, I was eager to move on to bigger, better more!
A good compilation of local trails in detail. The difficult choice now is which one do I tackle next weekend?

Good book to orient yourself on many trails in Alabama.......1998-02-27
Probably the best, if not the only, book availiable on trails in the state. I have met Patricia and she is a very informed person on the state of our trails in the state. This book is a good book to carry with you in a backpack though it could have been a little smaller for better packing. If you plan on hiking any trails in AL, I recommend you buy this book first.

Stolen Continents: The "New World" Through Indian Eyes
ASIN: 0618492402 |
Book Description
Powerful and passionate, Stolen Continents is a history of the Americas unlike any other. This incisive single-volume report tells the stories of the conquest and survival of five great American cultures — Aztec, Maya, Inca, Cherokee, and Iroquois. Through their eloquent words, we relive their strange, tragic experiences — including, in a new epilogue, incidents that bring us up to the twenty-first century.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best.......2007-01-01
Wright's focus on five native groups- following their history from European contact until the present day- is an ingenious technique, allowing him to serves to create a narrative which is both sweeping yet full of personal detail. The groups also illustrate the extraordinary diversity of indigenous America. As the subtitle indicates- Wright uses native sources as much as possible, uncovering some rare material- such as a dialogue between Aztec priests and the Catholic Spanish establishment. Iv'e read many works on Native history; this was unique in how it juxtaposed such seemingly diverse images; from Spanish friars burning Mayan manuscripts to the Cherokee developing their own script and newspapers through white influence...
An interestingly different take on accepted history.......2006-10-31
This is a great book, make no mistake. It is very easy to follow without dumbing down at all.
The book looks at the histories of five peoples of North and South America since Columbus landed in 1492: these are the Aztec, Inca, Maya, Iroquois and Cherokee. The book is divided into three parts, namely 'Invasion', 'Resistance' and 'Rebellion'. Each part is then divided into five chapters, each detailing the role of each indigenous nation in each aspect (Invasion etc).
Ronald wright has uncovered a variety of sources that are barely known, most probably because wherever possible he tried to cite native sources rather than European ones. His very valid point of view is that the people of European descent have been telling the stories for long enough and it's time the indigenous peoples should tell their own histories.
The books covers ground most people are familiar with in terms of the history of the Americas; the 'conquests' of Mexico and Peru by Cortez and Pizarro in particular: but we hear it from the side of the Aztecs and Incas wherever possible. The fall of Tenochtitlan is particularly moving in the same way that the resistance of Manco Inca is particularly rousing. Where the book detracts from most other histories is that it openly states that the 'conquests' were and still are ongoing to varying degrees - it didn't all end after a few battles.
The 'Resistance' part of the book is very interesting as it deals with the current day: how if Guatemala were truly democratic it would be a Mayan republic (no the Mayans didn't disappear); modern Peru is a shoddy European infrastructure built upon an abiding native base. The politics of contemporary USA and even more remarkably Canada leave a lot to be desired given the history of very recent rebellion (1990) of the Mohawk (part of the Iroquois Confederacy).
This book is a very good introduction to someone wanting an alternative and perhaps more honest version of the history of parts of the Western Hemisphere over the last 500-odd years.
So What's New.......2006-03-03
A reasonably straight relating of the remaining history of the rape of two continents. I found the Epilogue and the Afterword the most interesting parts of the book. It is unfortunate that the practises of the past are still being perpetrated by the governments of the various major powers

Simply a "must" read.......2004-10-28
Simply a "must" read for the Americans (talking about the whole continent for those who are geographically challenged LOL), the Europeans and anybody else interested in the "discovery" of America.
Well-researched and full of interesting facts concentrating on the 5 significant native cultures of the Americas: The Aztecs, the Mayas, the Incas, the Cherokees and the Iroquois. It is easy to read as well !!!
IMO it should be part of every high school history curriculum. Guaranteed to dispel many of the myths that are taught in schools today and reinforced by Hollywood.
Bravo Mr. Wright !!!!
hi.......2002-07-19
Although the material in this book is probably covered in greater detail elsewhere, it is pretty unique that the experiences of indigenous groups as diverse as the Iroquois and Incas, are presented here with equal detail. One learns interesting facts about each of them. While I knew about Manco Inca's revolt and establishing a mini-Inca state in the jungle, I had no idea that this was followed by a sort of "Inca Renaissance," with plays, histories and poems written in Quechua. In addition, the five groups that Wright chose either had their own written language or quickly learned one after European contact (and the Cherokee even had their own newspaper), so this history is genuinely "through Indian eyes." The unifying thread (in addition to the resilience of all 5 groups) is that the colonization of the New World by Europeans was not significantly different that of Africa and Asia- without the disease factor, the Americas might today be wholly governed by their original inhabitants.
Add this to your Curriculum.......2001-03-26
My emotions, while reading this book, ranged from disbelief to outrage. Do not read this book on a full stomach.
For me, Ronald Wright exposed the faulty notion of America's 'virgin wilderness'. Before I read this I did not appreciate the size or sophistication the Native American nations he has profiled in 'Stolen Continents'.
Though this is a tragic history, it is one that should be told. The section on 'Rebirth' is encouraging, for some nations. For others it seems like the relentless attacks, that have deprived so many of so much, will never end.
I hope Mr. Wright profiles other aboriginal nations with this all too rare perspective.
Very accurate history.......1998-07-14
I can't speak for the history of all the five nations, but my wife is Cherokee. Her family predates the arrival of the white race. She has a big thick book documenting the family genealogy compiled by her father, a true researcher. The words of Dragging Canoe, a realitive, are comprehensive and exact. Some quotes are new to the family, so Mr. Wright really did his research.
Mr. Wright painted an eye opening view of the real American Indian history, not what I learned in school and saw on TV.
An essential book in the history of the Americas.......1998-05-19
As a native American whose people came perilously close to being wiped out completely, I welcome and applaud the care, consideration and integrity with which Ronald Wright has addressed the history of five native nations in the Americas--the Aztecs, Maya, Inca, Iroquois and Cherokee. By selecting cultures from north, central and south America, he shows, unequivocally, how pervasive disease and the voracious appetite for gold, land and vassals were in the nearly total devastation of the peoples of this land.
This book should be a "must" read for high school and college students in every nation in the Americas. It is phenomenal in its exploration of past and current circumstances of native Americans.

Book Description
Like her father before her, Bette Husted grew up on stolen land. The bench land above the Clearwater River in north-central Idaho had been a home for the Nez Perce Indians until the Dawes Act opened their reservation to settlement in 1895. As a child on the family homestead, Husted felt the presence of the Nez Perce: "But they were always just out of sight, like a smoky shadow behind me that I couldn?t quite turn around quickly enough to catch."
Above the Clearwater chronicles her family's history on the land, revealing their joys and sorrows, their triumphs and tragedies. In a series of graceful and moving essays, Husted traces this intimate history, from her Cold War childhood to her struggles as a parent and finally to her life as a woman and teacher in the rural West. Her family's stories echo those of countless other families in the American West: the conflicts with guns, the struggles over land ownership and water rights, the isolation of women, the separations by race and class, the family secrets of mental illness and suicide.
With a powerful, poetic voice, Husted illuminates the tangled relationship between the history of a particular place and the history of the families who inhabit that place over time. As Above the Clearwater explores one family's search for a home on land taken from its original inhabitants, it quietly asks all readers to examine their own homes in the same light.
Customer Reviews:
A fearless and stunning memoir!.......2006-01-19
This is a courageous and beautiful book. Bette Husted traverses the inner territories of soul as fearlessly as she takes the reader across the physical landscape which shaped her life. I was moved by this author's ability to capture with such pathos and understatement, issues of great loss and learning.
Eloquently written .......2005-10-07
I enjoyed this book very much. It is writing in a manner not commonly seen in the post modern era. The author has a capacity with the language that is lost on most modern readers. There is a lot of heart in this book and it shows in every page. If you like stories about exemplary everyday people you should read this book.

Customer Reviews:
the most astonishing autobiography I ever read.......2001-07-13
This book is one volume in a series of books that form the autobiography of Ved Mehta. Mehta started with two biographies of his mother and father (Mamaji and Daddyji) and then started to write about his own life. It's an astonishing, deeply moving story of a boy gone blind at a very early age, who goes to America to study, and later to England (Oxford) and Harvard, to become a staff writer for The New Yorker. It's a shame and a disgrace that most of these books are out of print, because I consider them as Great Literature. He not only tells his own life, he also gives you insight into different cultures (starting with the lives of his mother and father, who had a totally different background, then the separation of India and Pakistan, then the difference between East and West, and finally between America and Europe). Warning: If you read one part of his autobiography, you'll want to read them all!
