Book Description

Since Roy Bedichek's influential Adventures with a Texas Naturalist, no book has attempted to explore the uniqueness of Texas nature, or reflected the changes in the human landscape that have accelerated since Bedichek's time. Pride of Place updates Bedichek's discussion by acknowledging the increased urbanization and the loss of wildspace in today's state. It joins other recent collections of regional nature writing while demonstrating what makes Texas uniquely diverse. These fourteen essays are held together by the story of Texas pride-the sense that from West Texas to the Coastal Plains, the people and the landscape are bold and unique.

This book addresses all the major regions of Texas. Beginning with Roy Bedichek's essay "Still Water," it includes Carol Cullar and Barbara "Barney" Nelson on the Rio Grande region of West Texas, John Graves's evocative "Kindred Spirits" on Central Texas, Joe Nick Patoski's celebration of Hill Country springs, Pete Gunter on the Piney Woods, David Taylor on North Texas, Gary Clark and Gerald Thurmond on the Coastal Plains, Ray Gonzales and Marian Haddad on El Paso, Stephen Harrigan and Wyman Meinzer on West Texas, and Naomi Shihab Nye on urban San Antonio.

This anthology will appeal not only to those interested in regional history, natural history, and the environmental issues Texans face, but also to all who say gladly, "I'm from Texas."

      4 out of 5 stars Amazing Designs, So-So Instructions.......2006-05-09

I own both the 1st and 2nd book from these authors. I've made 4 different leis from the first book, and am starting to get a feel for the techniques. The instructions really could be better, but they've been adequate for my needs. It would be nice if the authors could have included more step-by-step close-up photographs, and as already suggested in another review, more sources for the supplies and materials. (In my case, I've just substituted regular needles and nylon fishing line for the special needles and thread). I was able to find the recommended brand of ribbon from an online source (www.jkmribbon.com), for anyone who's having trouble locating the stuff. Since the book doesn't include difficulty ratings for each design, I can only suggest that the reader look closely at the instructions, and choose his/her first project carefully. I'm not a serious crafter, but I've been able to create really impressive leis on my first attempts. Since these books are about the only ones dealing with this type of project, I feel they're worth the reasonable purchase price.

3 out of 5 stars Great instruction - but impossible to find supplies!.......2005-10-31

I bought both books 1 & 2 and I really love them the instruction is uncomplicated & easy to follow. However finding the supplies you need (if you don't live in Hawaii) is not easy!

I was very frustrated searching online, I went to craft store after craft store & couldn't find beeding needles that looked like what they had a picture of, with a magnifying glass I was able to get the number off the package in the picture. I only found one place that sold these needles online (but was thrilled!)

I still am unable to locate the Aoyama Tape (all purpose double sided tape used to join ribbons) my searches for "Aoyama" don't come up with any kind of tape.... it would be great to know if any 2 sided tape will work?

Same with the nylon beeding thread again I'm not able to locate what is in the picture I'm assuming size matters as it must fit though the eye of the beeding needle but no size is listed.

I'm also having a hard time finding the specific embroidery needles in the sizes listed...

It would have been EXTREMELY HELPFUL to have more information about the supplies listed. The only store listed is in Hawaii you can't order online but you can mail order. The address is listed but not the phone number.

The only other help was call you craft stores???? yeah have fun with that one I visited craft stores & they had no idea what I was talking about.

I really can't wait to start making lei's & hope that someday in the next few months I can finally find & receive all the supplies I need!

The books though are beautiful & the Leis magnificent!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great book for those interested in this craft!.......2004-11-25

I belong to a hula halau and recently we were each required to make ribbon leis for a fundraiser. I thought this book was very useful in instructing me on how to make more unique kinds of leis versus the most simple and common technique. The designs included in this book are wonderful and made my leis bestsellers! Using your creativity, you can use different types of ribbons to create interesting textures and looks. Great pictures, easy instructions, all around good book!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful journey to Hawaii.......2007-03-21

This award-winning book is a treasure for anyone who loves Hawaii, flowers, or great writing. The pictures are stunning - you can almost feel the texture of the plants and smell the flowers. The literary quotes show how Hawaii and its flora have inspired the great writers who have lived and visited here, and give us a new way to see the plants through their eyes. There is just the right amount of technical information about the plants. Most of all, this book transports you to Hawaii. The book received a Ka Po'okela Palapala Award from the Hawaii Book Publishers Association for design.

I loved this book! I was having a luau birthday party and I wanted all the guests to have real lei's, but the price I found were crazy ($40-$80 a per lei!). So when a friend of mine bought this book for me I was VERY happy. After I got into it and discovered how easy it was, I couldn't imagine my luck! If you are into Hawaiian stuff or having a party, this is the book for you!

              Book Description

Although its emphasis is on getting a good deal, this no-nonsense guide steers people firmly away from no-frills travel and points them toward the wonders of first-class accommodations and preferential treatment. Readers will acquire an intimate knowledge of the art of luxury travel: how and when to visit the most desirable destinations; the role frequent-user programs play; the importance of building long-term relationships with elite travel companies; avoiding scams; and finding shortcuts through the labyrinth of airline and hotel rules. The result? Exceptional service and amenities, hotel and airline upgrades, and the sense of empowerment and freedom that comes from avoiding inhospitable employees and the annoying hassles regularly inflicted on the masses. Written in a refreshingly down-to-earth style, the book explains exactly what to do and how to do it, and is filled with engaging true-life travel anecdotes. Appendices list important phone numbers and websites, and compare major frequent-user programs.

5 out of 5 stars A book that helped me to travel in the style to which I would like to be accustomed.......2006-06-04

You might find this note from a reader helpful:

Thank you. I read your book about almost two years ago, but I didn't believe that I could really travel in luxury on the cheap. Well your book helped me. I have been travelling for years and I always though frequent flyer programs were just gimmicks. After reading your book I signed up for the frequent flyer program of the airline I always fly-American and I can't believe it!!!! A year later I was flying first class without even paying for the full fare coach ticket. I have never been a big fan of self-service so when American got those new kiosks in front of their ticket counters, I was a little irritated. Then one day I was in a hurry and I used the dreaded thing. I was offered an upgrade to first class for a hundred dollars! Of course, I jumped at the deal. Since I could not afford the full fare coach ticket to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. There was a net saver special for Milwaukee round-trip for $178. I was offered the upgrade on both segments so I paid $378 for a first-class trip to Milwaukee. That's a few hundred less than full-fare coach and several hundred less than a first-class ticket if I purchased it out right. In the year that I have been travelling first class through this method, I have only not been offered an upgrade one time. I arrived at the airport late.

As for hotels, I'm being offered suites for the price of regular rooms and I haven't earned my gold status yet. It's great and I have you to thank.

1 out of 5 stars Five Pages of Information and Endless Egotism.......2005-10-04

All of the useful information in this book could have been condensed into a travel magazine article. The remainder of the book is comprised of the author bragging about his free upgrades.

The author has the annoying habit of constantly stating that he's about to divulge a secret to discount luxury travel; then, the author (a) fails to provide any tips on the topic, (b) provides general common sense advice (make friends with the gate agents) or (c) provides anecdotes too specific to his situation to be applicable to most readers.

This is a revised edition of a previous book. Yet the author will occassionally imply that the earlier edition contains additional luxury travel secrets -- so you should run out and buy that book, too.

I was not at all surprised to find on this web page a series of content-less yet five-star reviews which read suspiciously like the book itself.

Avoid. Your time is better invested learning the details of actual frequent flyer and hotel loyalty programs on the various web pages devoted to the topics.

              5 out of 5 stars Groundbreaking.......2004-09-12

Although many books proclaim to be unique and groundbreaking, this one really is. All previous attempts to understand travel and upgrading psychology and its importance simply pale beside this work.

              5 out of 5 stars Great Tips.......2004-07-28

I used the authors bargaining techniques at The Pierre (New York) last week, and beat the Internet price, and got an upgrade and free breakfast. Thanks for the tips!!!

Who says loyalty isn't appreciated? Follow the advice laid out in The Penny Pincher's Passport to Luxury Travel and you may find yourself wallowing in the pleasures of luxury without breaking the bank--especially if you travel often and stick like glue to one company. Grateful airlines and hotels often respond to such brand loyalty with free seat or room upgrades, the first steps towards living the life of Riley at the same cost as those Joes cramped behind in coach. Widzer--with a business degree from Pepperdine, a career in marketing, and a million-mile award from his chosen airline--knows all the ropes when it comes to the business side of traveling in comfort, and explains how to ask the appropriate questions to get the desired results. If you're paying full price because you booked last minute, for example, asking for perks often gets you luxury extras. Widzer shares strategies for saving money depending on if the dollar is strong or weak; regularly obtaining airline seat, hotel room, and car rental upgrades; effectively voicing (and being compensated for) complaints, as well as knowing whom to tip when. With an appendix of travel resources, this is the book for those willing to do their homework to win the prize. --Stephanie Gold

2 out of 5 stars There are more practical ways.......2007-01-16

I agree with most comments, it is disappointing and a let down from the expectations I had about this book. Particularly in this day and age of 5 star hotels costing $500 per night and upwards.
I found it takes more than being a loyal customer to get good rates at luxury resorts.

              1 out of 5 stars If I could give it 0 stars I would.......2006-02-21

Save your time & money and stay away from this book. If you really want to know what is in it here goes
              1. Be nice
              2. Be loyal
              3. Ask for upgrades (yeah right)
Gimme a break. This book is full of useless information that may be pertinent for the traveler in like the 1960's. Speaking of the 60's, this book was published in 1999, I had to consider that before buying, but even in 1999, a rate for Ritz-Carlton and Four Seasons was more than $125 a night (as the author states). I believe that the positive reviews are friends of the author himself. He should be ashamed. What a waste of paper.

              5 out of 5 stars What a concept!.......2004-06-22

5 out of 5 stars The reader of 6-20 misses the point.......2004-06-21

A reviewer on June 20th, points out that the writer switch hotels because he got a better rate and therefore was not loyal. What this reviewer failed to point out was that the author had loyalty with both hotel chains, and used another one of his technique-using the competitive nature of the marketplace to get the best deals.
Overall I thought the book was great and give it 5-stars.

1 out of 5 stars Why are so many of the positive reviews from Brentwood, CA?.......2004-06-21

I thought this book was dreadful. First of all, most of the author's experience applies only to the top-elite travelers in airline & hotel loyalty clubs. He claims it applies to everyone - but if it applied to everyone, the different levels of elite status would be meaningless.

Secondly, he contradicts his own advice. In one chapter, he drills home the important point that travelers should stick to one airline/hotel chain. Later, he tells an anecdote about how he ditched the lovely Starwood-branded Prince de Galles in Paris for another hotel because they matched the rate. So much for his loyalty to Starwood.
