1 out of 5 stars Poor Editing.......2007-06-15

It is time for Ted Andrews to take his share of responsibility for the poor quality of book produced by Dragonhawk Publishing (which I suspect is his own label). This book is so poorly edited that information at times becomes incomprehensible and/or inaccurate. His Animal Wise Tarot suffered from the same problem. This is an insult to readers. I respect the author's knowledge but will never buy another copy of any book he publishes under Dragonhawk; readers work hard for their money and deserve more respect than what Mr. Andrews is showing. How spiritually correct is that?

4 out of 5 stars Very Informative Book!.......2007-05-09

This book has alot of very useful information. I'm sure I will be using it as a reference book for a long while.

4 out of 5 stars A great work.......2007-04-15

I really really liked this book. It was relatively aimed at Wiccans and Pagans, but it had very nice information, both of a spiritual nature, and scientifically so, about all sorts of herbs, flowers, and trees. Some of the exercises seemed a little weird to me, but to each his own- someone might really benefit from these. I see the outdoors as an even more beautiful place after reading this book. Its definately worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars Finding Spiritual in Everyday Life.......2007-01-03

After reading this book, you will not look at the world the same. Andrews points out simple ways to find the Divine in the everyday. A simple walk outside in your yard can be an act of worship!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you could ask about Nature's symbolism (to you).......2006-02-27

I was on vacation in NW Canada Rockies area and discovered this book in a little shop, and I couldn't leave the country without it (just in case I couldn't find it quick enough in the US). It's beyond "plants" you ID with. There's ceremonies (like making a staff -- or celebrating Solstice etc), a dictionary of landscapes (why are you drawn to oceans), magical rhythms (like seasons, angels, etc) ... even the meaning of numbers in nature (why did you plant two birches?) And of course the expected definition of plants, trees, flowers, etc. (Marigold: "keynote: words have healing power; sacrifice out of love if necessary." "It is a flower of love and sacrifice")

Book Description

A collection of images and impressions captured by those who have listened to the earth with their hearts --- John Muir, Walt Whitman, Annie Dillard, John Burroughs, Rachel Carson, Aldo Leopold, Henry David Thoreau, and more...

The Earth Speaks can be read by individuals in moments of solitude, shared among friends around a trailside campfire, and used by leaders to help their learners develop a love for life and the systems of the earth that sustain it.

Brought to life by the beautiful block prints of Gwen Frostic, this book contains the writings of naturalists and natives, poets and philosophers, plus ordinary people who were able to capture in words some of the magic and meaning of the earth's marvels.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful nature writing.......2007-08-16

This book is appropriate for random reading, mediation and just to experience nature. Many of the selections make the reader appreciate nature more and also be more observant of the small and subtle beauty around them.

5 out of 5 stars Good for Interfaith Worship.......2006-08-28

In designing an interfaith worship service for a scout outing, I was able to use many materials from this book. There are also things in it that are not necessarily suitable for a worship service, but certainly inspirational in respect to Nature and the Earth and our role in preserving them.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to environmental literature!.......2005-11-02

I read from this book to my 6th grade science class on a daily basis. It introduces them to classic environmental literature and fosters a deep appreciation of our earth.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome peaceful beautiful book.......2000-09-06

I remember at camp our councelors read this a bedtime, and i used sit there and think about what was read. Then at closing ceremony they read a paragraph, this book has a tremendus effect on the way you think about life and the earth when your done reading it. I would recomend this to anyone not just environmentalists.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely, peaceful little book...........2000-08-23

I first bought this book a few years ago when, by good fortune, I was in the middle of Denali National Park in Alaska in cabins with nothing around us for about 100 miles - true wilderness as I have never experienced it before or since. And, to me, this book brings me back to that peaceful, transcendent, truly wild place. I use it as a meditation book in the early morning. I have five that I read - the first four are about peace for me, human person, and they certainly have their place. But this little book I read last because it puts things in perspective and reminds me that I am not the center of anything at all. I buy them in quantity and give them away. It is such a beautiful book. The quotes are outstanding and are from some of our most eloquent naturalists, et al, and the peace that emanates from every reading can only be experienced, not described. It's wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Tao to Earth and How it BecameThe Confirmation of my Essence.......2000-08-22

When I first read Tao to Earth, I was already a firm believer of our divine selves (Essence) choosing our parents. This book became my bible and reconfirmation of self in every sense of the word.

Now with the reminders in this book (we only remember what we have forgotten, because our divine selves already knows all) I continue to see my relationships in a broader sense, and more importantly, everyone I meet fulfills my life's goals--which is to complete my growth in this incarnation and eventually my spirit's reawakening into the tao (all that is).

Book Description

The true story of a young boy growing up in Jamaica who meets a holy man named Bredda Man. Bredda Man was one of the elders in the remote Maroon community of Jamaica still practicing the "old ways." The Maroon traditions were said to come from secret meetings in the bush with wise elders of early African medicine people, European kabbalists, and masons. Thus the teachings evolved into an esoteric shamanism focusing on self-knowledge through reverent communication with nature. For centuries, this powerful teaching helped produce a people who were feared and respected as warriors and equally sought after as healers.

Chet Alexander is a contemporary teacher of kabbalistic shamanism. He met and was apprenticed to Bredda Man while a young boy growing up in Jamaica as the grandson of a wealthy landowner.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars layers of identity.......2006-03-27

Chet Alexander's book combines a sensuous attention to detail of the Jamaican natural flora, colour, and local language, with an impressive self-disciplined approach (in the personified form of the strong "Bredda" man) to the training and mysticism of finding oneself (in the story, a youth who he befriends)- the work of their encounters being to align in harmony with the surrounding nature and so become one with universal laws.
In particular, the letting go of wrong habits, including for a young man, his hero worship of the older, wiser man, is seen as a holy process of return to the soul's knowledge. Stones, plants, animals and humans are able to interact with respect for life, and in honour of a higher knowledge which guides, if allowed to. The local herbs which are used hark back to ancestral/indigenous abilities, and do not belong to the better known "rasta" variety.
The book should continue! Another volume, expanding on the Jamaican cultural moments of marketing, street and conversations, and giving more examples of the training. It would also lend itself nicely to a film, with self-discovery happening as a theme in the younger generation, not in rebellion, but in the return to personal strength experienced with one's identity with nature, rather than in power over it.

Book Description

Earth Moves, Bernard Cache's first major work, conceptualizes a series of architectural images as vehicles for two important developments. First, he offers a new understanding of the architectural image itself. Following Gilles Deleuze and Henri Bergson, he develops an account of the image that is nonrepresentational and constructive--images as constituents of a primary, image world, of which subjectivity itself is a special kind of image. Second, Cache redefines architecture beyond building proper to include cinematic, pictoral, and other framings.

Complementary to this classification, Cache offers what is to date the only Deleuzean architectural development of the "fold," a form and concept that has become important over the last few years. For Cache, as for Deleuze, what is significant about the fold is that it provides a way to rethink the relationship between interior and exterior, between past and present, and between architecture and the urban.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars spatial thinking in flattened space.......2000-10-28

i found this text to be a significant resource in thinking about practice and design, and their blending of intentions. using furniture as a medium for thinking about architectural space, the author identifies methodologies of investigation that are forward but readable. this book is not about furniture, it is about spatial movement, its architecture in the broad sense of spatiality. its a good resource for anyone interested in layering, trans-anything, and folding concepts.

    Book Description

How Nature Speaks illustrates the convergence of complexity theory in the biophysical and social sciences and the implications of the science of complexity for environmental politics and practice. This collection of essays focuses on uncertainty, surprise, and positionality—situated rather than absolute knowledge—in studies of nature by people embedded within the very thing they purport to study from the outside. The contributors address the complicated relationship between scientists and nature as part of a broader reassessment of how we conceive of ourselves, knowledge, and the world that we both inhabit and shape.

Exploring ways of conceiving the complexity and multiplicity of humans’ many interactive relationships with the environment, the contributors provide in-depth case studies of the interweaving of culture and nature in socio-historical processes. The case studies focus on the origin of environmental movements, the politicization of environmental issues in city politics, the development of a local energy production system, and the convergence of forest management practices toward a dominant scheme. They are supported by explorations of big-picture issues: recurring themes in studies of social and environmental dynamics, the difficulties of deliberative democracy, and the potential gains for socio-ecological research offered by developmental systems theory and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of intentionality.

How Nature Speaks includes a helpful primer, “On Thinking Dynamically about the Human Ecological Condition,” which explains the basic principles of complexity and nonlinear thinking.

Earth's channelling that completes and ilustrates anothers, but that rejects many, many others as well. Some New Age's metaphisycians, ecologists, politicians, economists, publishers- can be annoyed by her words. Gaia says: "[...] you cannot destroy what you did not create. [...]. In order to destroy the Earth, humanity would have to destroy itself. Hummans cannot and will not destroy themselves [...]" (p. 113).
Certainly, a best-seller for this year. Certainly, a complete revision of New Age's history.

    Book Description

Taking the lead from John F. Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize winning Profiles in Courage, Steven McFadden presents the stories and thinking of 17 Native American spiritual elders. As our existing culture shifts, what do the ancient ones who have been trained in the sacred traditions of Turtle Island (America) have to say to us? With this question and others, journalist McFadden begins his quest to speak with contemporary Native American elders. The elders offer penetrating and poetic insight on a host of crucial matters.

    Book Description

A heartfelt combination of spiritual discovery, environmental observations, and journal writing, The Wise Earth Speaks to Your Spirit offers readers a 52-week cycle of themed essays and related questions about the natural world. Entries on night and sky and parakeets, wind and mud and rain, snakes and tea and thistle, among others. In addition to folklore, myths, stories, and symbols connected to each theme, Janell Moon includes inspirational quotes from well-known writers - among them E. B. White, Ursula K. LeGuin, Gertrude Stein, and Mother Theresa - and shares her original poetry and personal experiences with the natural world. As she writes in the introduction, "It is my wish that through the telling of these stories, and the deepening of your own connections through your writing, that you will better enjoy a rainbow or a tree with angel's wings in a storm." "In this era of mechanization and cultural disintegration, Moon calls us back to our source, our strength, our refuge: the earth from which we draw our very existence. From the strands of myth, folklore, symbolism, and her own personal stories, she weaves 52 essays that carry us through a year's worth of inspired journaling. She proves, beyond a doubt, that we can go home again, that we can reconnect with earth's sacredness, and that the journey is well worth the effort." - Mari Messer, workshop presenter and author of Pencil Dancing: New Ways to Free Your Creative Spirit

Full of wonderful quotations, anecdotes and exercises, "The Wise Earth" harvests the wisdom found within our internal worlds--and reminds us anew of the beauty found in our external world.

I was expecting more depth from a book like this. Instead we have some simple meditations and exercises that don't quite resonate with my need for deep ecological connection with the earth. I'm still reading, but what I've read so far hasn't gotten me any closer to where I want to be or hasn't taken me anywhere new.
