Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2002-11-06
This book is great if you're looking for 1-2 page descriptions of plants, animals, trees, lakes, wildflowers, glaciers, canyons, mammals, fish, and deserts of parks in North America. The pictures are wonderful. And there are many national forests, national parks, and national wildlife refuges listed in the book. The map at the beginning of the book clearly pinpoints where each of the parks are located.

Book Description
This is the long-awaited introduction to photosynthesis, with the emphasis on the molecular level.Photosynthesis has long been a paradigm for interdisciplinary science, where physicists, chemists and biologists pool their expertise to understand one of the most important and complex natural processes on Earth. This interdisciplinary aspect is emphasized in the book, and selected topics of chemistry, physics, biology and even geology are included.
Customer Reviews:
an excellent overview of photosynthesis.......2005-09-18
as a graduate student with a background in physical chemistry and now working in biophysical chemistry, i found this book to be an excellent overview of photosynthesis. blankenship clearly outlines broad topics to be covered in the first chapter then delves into well-organized detail in subsequent chapters. this book was recommended as a reference by my advisor, but i found it so well written that i read nearly the entire book and bought a copy for my own. i'd recommend this book to anyone intersted in photosynthestic mechanisms at the molecular level (including light harvesting, water oxidation, protein structures, and carbon fixation).

Book Description
Lipids in Photosynthesis provides readers with a comprehensive view of the structure, function and genetics of lipids in plants, algae and bacteria, with special emphasis on the photosynthetic apparatus in thylakoid membranes. This volume includes the historical background of the field, as well as a full review of our current understanding of the structure and molecular organization of lipids and their role in the functions of photosynthetic membranes. The physical properties of membrane lipids in thylakoid membranes and their relationship to photosynthesis are also discussed. Other topics include the biosynthesis of glycerolipids and triglycerides; reconstitution of photosynthetic structures and activities with lipids; lipid-protein interactions in the import of proteins into chloroplasts; the development of thylakoid membranes as it relates to lipids; genetic engineering of the unsaturation of membrane glycerolipids, with a focus on the ability of the photosynthetic machinery to tolerate temperature stress; and the involvement of chloroplast lipids in the reactions of plants upon exposure to stress. This book is intended for a wide audience and should be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate students and to researchers active in the field, as well as to those scientists whose fields of specialization include the biochemistry, physiology, molecular biology, biophysics and biotechnology of membranes.

The origin of carbonaceous matter in pre-3.0 Ga greenstone terrains: A review and new evidence from the 3.42 Ga Buck Reef Chert [An article from: Earth Science Reviews]
M.M. Tice , and
D.R. Lowe
Manufacturer: Elsevier
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Digital
ASIN: B000P6NT6Q |
Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Earth Science Reviews, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
The geological record of carbonaceous matter from at least 3.5 Ga to the end of the Precambrian is fundamentally continuous in terms of carbonaceous matter structure, composition, environments of deposition/preservation, and abundance in host rocks. No abiotic processes are currently known to be capable of producing continuity in all four of these properties. Although this broad view of the geological record does not prove that life had arisen by 3.5 Ga, the end of the early Archean, it suggests a working hypothesis: most if not all carbonaceous matter present in rocks older than 3.0 Ga was produced by living organisms. This hypothesis must be tested by studies of specific early geological units designed to explore the form, distribution, and origin of enclosed carbonaceous matter. The carbonaceous, environmentally diverse 3416 Ma Buck Reef Chert (BRC) of the Barberton greenstone belt, South Africa, provides an opportunity for such a study. Upward facies progressions in the BRC reflect deposition in environments ranging from shallow marine evaporitic brine ponds to a storm- and wave-active shelf to a deep, low-energy basinal setting below storm wave base. Abundances and ratios of Al"2O"3, Zr, TiO"2, and Cr track inputs of various types of volcaniclastic and terrigenous clastic materials. In particular, Zr/Al"2O"3 and Zr serve as proxies for concentration of windblown dust and, indirectly, as proxies for sedimentation rate. Cu, Zn, Ni, and FeO were concentrated in the most slowly deposited transitional and basinal sediments, inconsistent with a hydrothermal setting but consistent with a normal marine setting. The distribution of microfacies defined by associations and layering of clastic, ferruginous, and carbonaceous grains correlates with facies transitions. Fine carbonaceous laminations, which occur only in shallow platform settings, represent photosynthetic microbial mats. These were ripped up and the debris widely redistributed in shallow and deep water by waves and storms. The isotopic composition of carbonaceous matter ranges from -35%% to -30%% in shallow-water settings and to -20%% in deep-water units. The heavier @d^1^3C in deep-water carbonaceous matter is thought to reflect microbial processing, possibly by fermentation and methanogenesis, of organic matter originally produced in shallow water. Hydrothermal origins for BRC carbonaceous matter are clearly excluded by the inferred depositional setting of the rocks as a whole, an inference supported by field, petrographic, and geochemical analysis. We suggest that the biological model proposed here for BRC carbonaceous matter is the best currently available. The hypothesis that ''at least some carbonaceous matter present in rocks older than 3.0 Ga was produced by living organisms'' should be regarded as likely until extraordinary contradictory evidence is presented.

Description:
We examined the CO"2 exchange of a Kobresia meadow ecosystem on the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau using a chamber system. CO"2 efflux from the ecosystem was strongly dependence on soil surface temperature. The CO"2 efflux-temperature relationship was identical under both light and dark conditions, indicating that no photosynthesis could be detected under light conditions during the measurement period. The temperature sensitivity (Q"1"0) of the CO"2 efflux showed a marked transition around -1.0^oC; Q"1"0 was 2.14 at soil surface temperatures above and equal to -1.0^oC but was 15.3 at temperatures below -1.0^oC. Our findings suggest that soil surface temperature was the major factor controlling winter CO"2 flux for the alpine meadow ecosystem and that freeze-thaw cycles at the soil surface layer play an important role in the temperature dependence of winter CO"2 flux.

Invaluble Guide For Walking Enthusiasts.......2005-11-14
Used this book on a 10 day break from New York City in October. We were yearning for some good day hikes, great food and wine, and an authentic feel for the region. This book helped steer us to all three. We did three walks from the book: Le Cousson (our favorite of the three), North Side of Luberon (entirely covered by mist the day we did it), and La Gambade (Dentelles de Montmirail). The color photos from almost every walk, detailed and interesting walk descriptions, and excellent directions for navigating trails with varying degrees of sign-posting were all very useful. This book is small enough to tote around with you daily, has great tips on town highlights and where best to base yourself for walking, and enticing walks with great, detailed descriptions. I wished we had more time to try more of the walks! The small maps for each walk are only somewhat useful--offshoots of the trail are barely indicated, which can be confusing. Also, we are two moderately fit 30 year-olds, and we found some of the walks a little more vigorous than suggested by Janette. Our times to do each walk were pretty close to those suggested in the book. We stop to take a lot of photos and gawk at views, so in general we erred on the side of taking longer to do each walk than Janette indicates (but not by much). We also relied heavily on "Best Of Provence," a great, general, short-and-sweet guide book for the region. Thanks for a wonderful, unique guide, Janette!
