5 out of 5 stars For us, best of the bunch.......2007-08-23

Using Amazon and local bookstores, I checked out all the recent Canadian Rockies guidebooks I could find before choosing this one. It has good explanations of geology, flora, and fauna found in this area. We took many of the suggestions for lodging, food and things to do, and was not disappointed with any. I'm not a hiker - I walk - so I can't judge the suggested hikes, with the exception of one, rated "easy" near Banff. Not easy. For un-hikers who want to "hike" I recommend Graeme Pole's "Walks and Easy Hikes in the Canadian Rockies". It rated the Banff walk as "harder" (that is the toughest of his ratings).

5 out of 5 stars Practical Planner for a Canadian Rockies Vacation.......2005-09-29

Moon Travel's "Canadian Rockies Handbook" is packed with the practical information needed to plan a great vacation in the Canadian Rockies. In a well-organized format, the handbook covers how to get there, what to see and do, where to stay, and a nice slice of commentary on the various towns and other sites of interest. The discussion about accomodations includes a decent range of prices and facilities. The focus is on the area in and around Banff and Jasper National Parks, a stunningly beautiful area with endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, sight-seeing, and relaxation. The handbook includes maps and diagram that are sufficiently detailed to enable to visitors to get to the main points of interest. The handbook also provides information on popular hikes, golfing, and white water rafting, among other activities.
This handbook is highly recommended to anyone planning a vacation in the Canadian Rockies, even if they have visited the Rockies before. This handbook provides enough detail in a compact format that it may inform regular visitors on wonders they may have missed on prior trips.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Thorough.......2005-07-25

I'm going to the Canadian Rockies for my honeymoon, and I couldn't ask for a better guide. The author includes every detail one could want. I'm looking forward to using it on the trip. I can tell I've chosen the right place, because the author himself has chosen to live there!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent buy.......2004-10-03

We spent a week in the Canadian Rockies, using this book as our guide. The book gives excellent recommendations for accomodations and activities - we did not go wrong following them. It gives more information that is beyond the basic, "usual", details. It also includes descriptions of many hikes, from 1-hour hikes to full-day hikes, as well as description of road-accessible sites for the non-hikers.

5 out of 5 stars This guide is well-written and exceptionally informative to the insight of the country and it's culture.......2007-08-30

This is an amazing, thorough guide book to Alberta.
Alberta is the heart of western Canada, a place filled with natural wonders and enough adventures to last a lifetime. The unforgetable scene as the first flush of light hits Lake Louise. The thrill of uncovering dinosaur bones. The excitement of a small-town rodeo. Soaking up big-city culture. Marveling at the infrastructure around the world's largest known deposit of oil. Watching the northern lights sparkle across the winter sky. These and hundreds of other reasons make a vacation or permenant move to the prosperous province of Alberta an easy decision.

Sandwiched between the mountains of BC to the west and the prairies of Saskatchewan to the east, the landscape of Alberta encompasses a little of everything. The best known features are the mountains of the Canadian Rockies, which are filled with photogenic lakes and natural wonders made accessible by a well maintained highway network.
While the beauty of Alberta's defined landscapes is undeniable, so is the value of what lies beneath them-a supply of oil and gas that shapes the economy and has created a boomtown mentality not dissimilar to gold rushes of days gone by. The most important reserve is the Athabasca Oil Sands of northern Alberta, the world's single biggest oil reserve. At the reserve itself is the city of Fort McMurray, where the population has increased 2,000 percent in the last 30 years, but the wealth filters down to the the rest of the province, most notable to the two largest cities, Edmonton and Calgary.
Throughout the province, outdoor adventures, wide-open spaces, and accessible wilderness beckon, and big-city culture awaits when you come down from the hills. So whether your interests lean toward high peaks or high tea, you are sure to find plenty to suit you in Alberta.

I have several Moon Handbooks, and they are meant for backpackers and hikers. For that group, these Guides are very good. For others, like me, older and now reasonably handicapped, other guides are better.

5 out of 5 stars Moon Handbooks Alberta .......2004-11-16

Moon Handbooks Alberta Including Banff, Jasper, and the Canadian Rockies is the ultimate overview for traveling within Alberta, Canada. This book contains 467 pages of travel information but is still small enough to tuck in a backpack for easy reference. Furthermore, this book has plenty of fairly detailed maps, complete with accurate distance scales, for easy travel planning or reference while you travel.

There are twelve chapters in Moon Handbooks Alberta: Introduction, On the Road, Calgary, Dinosaur Valley, Southern Alberta, West of Calgary, Banff National Park, Jasper National Park, Central Alberta, Edmonton, Northern Alberta, Resources. The introduction chapter contains an overview on Alberta and its various regions. This detailed information includes geology, climate, flora, fauna, history, economy, and the government of the province. The next chapter, On the Road, contains general information and contacts for outdoor recreation; arts and entertainment; accommodations and food; transportation; and information services within the province of Alberta. The Resources chapter contains further information on suggested readings and internet resources.

The rest of the chapters in Moon Handbooks Alberta focus on particular geographical regions within Alberta. The first paragraph or page of each regional section describes a little about the region. After this overview, individual sights, recreation areas, special events, accommodations, food services, information services, and transportation services are depicted in detail. Depending on the size and general amount of facilities in a given region, there may be only one or two entries per category or over a dozen. Each entry contains the location, contacts, costs, and a short paragraph description of the facility or event featured. Several black and white maps accompany each section, clearly marked with the various facilities described in that particular section.

Some facility or event categories are described in extreme detail. For instance, there are six pages about the Calgary Stampede held in Calgary every July. This mini-section reflects the history of the Calgary Stampede and then sets out the events, entertainment, food services, accommodations, and transportation services available during the ten-day event. Specifics such as costs and contacts are also printed under each entry.

Though some medium sized towns are described in Moon Handbooks Alberta, most of this book focuses on cities and larger towns. Thus, not every town in Alberta is discussed in this work. No doubt such a complete book would no linger fit so easily in a backpack for easy reference. Therefore, if you are looking for something to do or some place to stay in a small Alberta town this book will not detail these specifics. Nonetheless, the regional coverage of this work is such that there is probably a pertinent entry or two a short distance from most any small town in Alberta. In this way, entertainment, accommodation, and food are but a short commute away from anywhere in Alberta.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive travel-guide book about Alberta.......2004-05-08

Recently, as I was searching the Internet for travel guidebooks that uniquely deal with Alberta, Canada, I was surprised to discover that my choices were very limited.
However, I did notice a travel-guide book now in its fifth edition, published by Avalon Travel, authored by Andrew Hempstead, entitled Moon Handbooks Alberta: Including Banff, Jasper, and the Canadian Rockies.

Hempstead is very well versed in the subject matter, having traveled, photographed and written about Alberta for many years. In fact, the first book he ever authored was on Alberta.

Turning to the opening pages of the guide, I knew I was in for a wealth of invaluable information, and without doubt I realized that the author really did his homework in providing his readers with countless tips.

The potential for exploring Alberta is unlimited, and unless information is carefully organized, it would be very easy to fall into the trap that many guidebooks slide into- confusion. However, such is not the case with this book.

What immediately caught my eye was that preceding the table of contents is a map page that clearly pin points the various geographical areas of Alberta with boxes telling the reader exactly where in the guidebook he or she can find out more about a particular destination. No doubt, this will save the reader a great deal of time and effort, if, for example, you are only interested in a particular areas of the province.

These areas are divided into nine sections: Northern Alberta, Jasper National Park, Edmonton, Central Alberta, Banff National Park, West of Calgary, Calgary, Dinosaur Valley, and Southern Alberta.
Following the map section is the usual table of contents, which mirrors these same locations and includes a very brief description of each.

Within the first fifty pages, the author incorporates an overview of early settlers, flora and fauna, history, economy and government, the people, outdoor recreation, and getting to Alberta and what to expect once you arrive.

The remainder of the guide- book effectively evokes the beauty of Alberta with its striking Rocky Mountain ranges, pristine glaciers, rushing rivers, magnificent lakes, and National Parks as Banff, Jasper, and Waterton Lakes. As the author states in his introduction: "for most visitors to Alberta, the great out-doors, not the big cities or the fast bucks, is the main draw."

Each chapter contains detailed information about the history of the area, sights, attractions, parks, scenic drives, recreation, accommodations and camping, food, information and services, and transportation.
Interspersed are a selection of black and white maps and photos providing a good sense of the places described.

Throughout are also interesting tidbits replete with invaluable information contained in side- bars or boxes. For example, Jasper has 100 residential homes offering accommodations, or there are dinosaur digs that you can participate in at the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology.
Moreover, wherever practical, phone numbers, hours of operation, price ranges, and addresses are mentioned.

The concluding chapters of this hefty book provide the reader with suggested readings and Internet resources.

For the serious traveler to Alberta, this well researched and well-organized guide will prove to be an invaluable aid, particularly for those individuals who want to learn more about the history, geography and culture of this beautiful province. It certainly goes beyond the usual boring guides that devote a great deal of ink to tourism, hotels, restaurants and shopping, and entertainment, although the guidebook does nevertheless provide ample information pertaining to these topics.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and up to date.......2001-07-17

This book was indispensible for my recent travels through Alberta. It contains detailed descriptions of all the best places to go, including some great small town festivals that I would of otherwise missed. The book also has many hikes included, mostly in the Canadian Rockies. I budgeted to spend around $50 a night for motels, and found that this book described many good choices in this price range but also includes campgrounds and more expensive places. Overall, I found it to be very current, not only for restaurants and the like but also coverage of issues such as overcrowding in the national parks, which I found an interesting addition.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars Plus!.......2000-08-23

This book and its companion volume to British Columbia are undoubtedly the best travel books I have ever used. I just returned from a two-month trip that took me to the Calgary Stampede, through the Rockies, up to Yellowknife and through British Columbia to Vancouver. Alberta is an amazing place to visit and by buying this book I was able to enjoy it all the more. The author has obviously done his homework and describes the region in a colorful style but also with an incredible amount of detail. By using these books I managed to plan my trip before leaving home, even down to where I wanted to eat. The other guide I had with me was rarely used. I also found local information centers sending me along well worn tourist paths, and while this book covers all of that side of Alberta it also led me away from the masses to areas of equal beauty. I highly recommend this book to anyone planning a trip to Canada!!

5 out of 5 stars Don't travel without it!.......2000-01-13

This was an excellent guide for family travel. It provided first rate information on dinosaur adventures in the Red Deer region to Waterton NP to the Canadian Rockies including Banff and Jasper and all points in between. Includes tidbits of local history and written in such a user friendly manner that by the middle of our three week adventure we were fondly refering to it as Mr. Moon, as in, what does Mr. Moon reccommend for dinner. If you are traveling to the Canadian Rockies, the British Colombia guide by this publisher makes an indispensable companion to the Alberta Guide.

5 out of 5 stars An A+ Guide to the Canadian Rockies.......1999-04-02

I couldn't believe all the information that this book contained. It told us of all the great spots in Banff and we didn't miss a one. This was our first time there, but because this book was top notch, we're planning our return within a few months. I would highly recommend this book to anyone traveling in the Canadian Rockies. It's better than the best!!

5 out of 5 stars This book was outstanding!.......1998-06-28

This handbook was packed with great spots to stop. There were many places listed that the AAA guidebook missed, and all were fantastic. The book was sectioned well, breaking up different areas into day-trips. If you are going to Alberta for the first time, this is a MUST BUY!

5 out of 5 stars Postively THE best guide out there! .......2006-09-29

I cannot rave enough about this book. I wandered into a gift shop in Jasper searching for a geological map, but no one knew what that was (I was offered topographic maps by the staff.) Finally, several gift shops later someone suggested this guide. I initially hesitated, since it was more then I had planned to spend. All I wanted was a brief outline of local geology, and I got so much more!
Absolutely fabulous! Entertaining, comprehensive, beautifully illustrated, authoritative and yet written with a sense of humour. I felt fully prepared to pick mushrooms, face bears, or lecture random hikers on the behaviour of gulls. Worth every penny! I am in awe of Mr. Gadd, and I thank him with all my heart for this gem of a book.

5 out of 5 stars The definitive all-in-one guidebook.......2003-08-28

The third printing of the second edition has been updated for 2003. This book is the definitive all-in-one guidebook to the Canadian Rockies. It can replace a flower guide, a plant guide, an animal guide, an insect guide, a bird guide, a fish guide, a geology guide, a history book, a trail guide and even a road map! It is divided into sections for each of these topics and is well illustrated with colour photos and drawings. It is the most comprehensive and useful guide to the Rockies that I have encountered and I have lived here for over 25 years. If you are only buying one guidebook to the Rockies make it this one.

5 out of 5 stars Cheaper in Canada!.......1999-04-14

An excellent, broadranging book that includes anything and everything about the Canadian Rockies. One suggestion, however, buy the book in Canada. It's available in any regular bookstore up there for $35 Can, which is about $24 US.

5 out of 5 stars Don't go to the Canadian Rockies without it!.......1998-10-09

Gadd's book is an excellent resource for anyone who wants more knowledge and information on the splendor of the Candaian Rockies. Detailed, yet easy reading information is presented on flora, fauna, geology, climate, and hiking.

In our recent trip to the Canadian Rockies my wife and I referred to it often whether in the car or on a Mt. trail. Whatever bird, flower, or geological formation you wanted to know about, Gadd's book provided all the information.

    5 out of 5 stars B.C. Handbook.......2006-07-18

Excellent book for travel to BC. We have used other Moon Books on travel and have been very pleased with all of them

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Help.......2004-01-14

This was the first of the Moon books I'd ever used and I was very impressed. There was a ton of useful information on general Canadian travel, but the bulk of the book is devoted to the various regions and the best of what there is to see and do. In places like Vancouver, where there are lots of museums, he discusses these; on Vancouver Island he tells all you'll need to know about water activities; in the Okanagan Valley he chooses his favorite wineries, etc. I'd been to BC previously, but visited a few great spots that I wouldn't have found without this book. The author concentrates on 3 or 4 places to stay and a similiar number of restaurants in each town and he has obviously done his research well as I couldn't find fault with the recommendations that cover all price ranges.

Also importantly, the book is very well organized and the maps were very helpful. I also liked the thorough bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite guidebook for British Columbia.......2002-06-24

I know of no better book to my home province of British Columbia than this Moon guide. On my travels as a semi-retired geologist, I also carry copies of the Lonely Planet and Frommer's book and have reviewed both of them and others at Amazon.com, but Moon Handbooks British Columbia stands alone for its usefulness. The other books have their good points, but this one encapsulates everything one needs to enjoy the wonders of the province, whether it's their first trip or they live here. It covers every single corner of BC and is thorough and up to date.

The Moon guide is cleverly written and arranged to appeal to all budgets. The bulk of the text relates to towns and parks of BC, with informative coverage of everything from museums to fishing opportunities and wildlife viewing. Each section ends with details of the best places to stay and recommendations for dining. If you're camping out or RVing I'd suggest also getting a campground guide, but the Moon book suggests at least one campground in each town, each of which the author has obviously visited. Motels are also detailed, and over previous editions I'm yet to find fault with the author's choices. Ditto for bed and breakfasts and restaurants.

In my opinion, thois is definitely the best allround guidebook for British Columbia

4 out of 5 stars Great, but previous edition better........2002-06-01

This is indeed a terrific guidebook for B.C. Previous editions, however, included Banff and Jasper National Parks, which admittedly are in Alberta, not B.C., but are usually included in Canadian Rockies travel itineraries. There's no excuse including Yoho (which is just over the border) but not Banff and Jasper, except to sell more books. So this is not an improvement.

5 out of 5 stars Moon Handbooks rule!.......2001-09-27

I've used Moon Handbooks for years and they are simply the best! I have the Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Alberta, and now the British Columbia book, and I've never been disappointed. These books include the usual stuff, such as lodging, restaurants, and recreation, but they also include local history and cultural information that makes them far superior to most guides. Buy a Moon Handbook that covers the state you live in--you will be surprised at how much you can learn. If you're going traveling, they are indispensable.
