Book Description

Metabolic Man: Ten Thousand Years from Eden describes man's journey from a harmonious co-existence with nature to today's state of nutritional disorder following the agricultural revolution. Leaving Eden and moving into civilization, man has failed to live by nature's laws and throughout the last 10,000 years has paid the price with disease, maladaption and premature death.

The author's perspective of the history of man, his state of health, and the ecological devastation to the planet during the last ten thousand years allows the reader to clearly see where man fits into a downward spiral of ill health and degradation of quality of life.

Extensively documented, Metabolic Man provides the reader with a path to individualizing a personal nutrition tailored to his or her metabolic profile. Metabolic Man clears the mine field of processed food and advertising ploys that are in fact destructive to good health by helping the grocery shopper become a "hunter/gatherer" for specific metabolic body types in the supermarkets of today. AUTHORBIO: Alarmed at the deteriorating health of society in the "advantaged" nations, Charles Heizer Wharton, Ph.D. has devoted much of his time since his retirement in the early 80's to the subject of human nutrition. It is his fervent hope that through understanding their individual heritage and lifestyle, fellow humans can not only improve their own lives, but can help mitigate earth's problems in accommodating an exploding population. Currently he is Affiliate Faculty at the University of Georgia's Institute of Ecology.

The author's consuming interest in nutrition began in 1947, with the care and feeding of rare animals from the Philippines, (Published in National Geographic Magazine) and academically, by a course in nutrition at Cornell. He has Worked with native peoples in such diverse places as the Paraguayan Chaco and Sabah, Borneo. His first expedition to Cambodia was highlighted in the TV series, Investigative Reports (A&E). The National Academy of Sciences sponsored his second trip to Southeast Asia. His interest in early man was whetted by visits with the Leakeys and trips to Africa's Olduvai Gorge and Masai Mara.

Ten Thousand Years From Eden is a unique and highly recommended addition to students of nutrition, human evolution, human ecology, and contemporary food habits in a post-industrial age.

Book Description

The National Museum of Forest Service History presents a charming cookbook that celebrates decades of camp cooking by countless Forest Service agents in the field.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Ideas!.......2007-10-08

This book offers some interesting background and stories plus lots of great recipes - mainly for dutch ovens but also for skillet cooking.

1 out of 5 stars All Mormon.......2007-01-10

I was disappointed that almost all the photos were of Mormons in Utah or Arizona - This book seems to ignore the many other non-Mormon pioneers and history.

5 out of 5 stars Campfire fun.......2006-12-26

This has some good recipes, historical camp photos and stories.
A fun and practical read.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Recipe Book and Much, Much More.......2006-10-24

This delightful book presents a mixture of terrific recipes, historic camp photos and wonderful tales of early days in the Forest Service. The emphasis is on Dutch oven and camp-fire cooking. Inside you will find dozens of interesting recipes: Bean Hole Beans, One-Eyed Buffaloes, Pistol Rock Chicken and Creamy Pumpkin Pie to name just a few.

Far more than just another cookbook, "Camp Cooking: 100 Years" is a real treasure of Forest Service lore. This is one book that always finds its way into our 5th wheel when we hit the road and yet quickly migrates back into the house as soon as we return to our place of sticks and bricks. If there is a better camp cooking book for the money, we don't know what it is.

5 out of 5 stars vintage recipes.......2005-08-31

I highly reccommend this charming book produced by the folks at the National Forest Service non-profit museum in Montana, and chock full of recipes from forest ranger districts all over the country, celebrating 100 years of service. So it is filled with historic stories and photos of early ranger camps and cooks. Some of these vintage recipes have been around for awhile, and are very nostalgic. Most recipes list the contributing ranger, and their district. Spiral binding makes it easy to cook with, as you can keep the book open and flat on the page you need. All cookbooks should be made like that.

Most of these dishes are for cooking on a cabin stove or fire. The recipes rely on heavier fresh, dry, or canned ingredients similar to what you have at home. So any of these recipes can be made in your own kitchen, but are also good for RV and car camping. Starts with dutch oven cooking basics. Has chapters on breads, breakfasts, veggies, main dishes, and desert. Has an index. This book was released in 2004. It is 192 pages in length.

For a look at modern Ranger cooking see "Wilderness Ranger Cookbook", which is a modern ultra-light backpacking recipes cookbook from backcountry Forest Service Wilderness Rangers all across America. It is available at Amazon.

My review is a note to the author!
Dear Karma Wilson,
Thank-you! We love bear, mouse, badger, wren, raven, hare, owl, mole and any other amazing critters we have forgotten. Your bear stories have beautiful rhythm. My daughter got her first bear books at the age of 4, and at 7 she still loves them.
Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Bear book!!!.......2007-10-01

I love the Bear books and I have every one in the series. I started getting them for my older son when the series first started with Bear Snores On and now I'm reading them all to my younger son as well. Sometimes we have a Bear Book Marathon and read all of them right in a row, it's so much fun! I definitely recommend not only this book but the entire Bear Book series - Bear Snores On, Bear Wants More, Bear Stays up for Christmas, Bear's New Friend and Bear Feels Sick.

5 out of 5 stars Love that Bear!.......2007-09-28

My 22 month old son and I love this book. We started with Bear Snores On and we really enjoy Karma Wilson's beautiful verse, which can be read in so many different ways. My son (being sick right now) can really empathize with Bear and his friends. Our favorite part about this book is that when the tables inevitably turn, Bear is enthusiastic about taking care of his friends too. Beautifully illustrated by Jane Chapman again!

5 out of 5 stars Another adorable bear book.......2007-09-15

All of Karma Wilson's bear books are sweet and endearing and teach about friendship. Her books are about the only ones I trust to read to my son without previewing ahead of time for inappropriate content. In this one, bear's friends take care of him when he feels ill and he returns the favor when they become sick. It's wonderful that "Bear's New Friend" owl is here. The illustrations by Jane Chapman are lovely. These books are classics and should be a part of every young child's library.

5 out of 5 stars love the bear books!!!!.......2007-09-08

can't get enough of the bear books! loved seeing the owl in this one... my kids pointed him out straight away. thanks karma! now get to writing some more adventures for bear and his clan!

Amazon's description is very accurate, these 4 short stories are indeed a modern Frog and Toad, with much more colorful illustrations. The font is large and the wording is simple. The suspense in "Waving" had my 4 and 7 yr olds on the edge of their seats. Every first and second grade classroom should have a copy of Pinwheel Days; hopefully the author will start a series.

    Book Description

Guided by Voices was one of the most popular indie-rock bands of the 1990s. Critics internationally have lauded the band’s brain trust, Robert Pollard, as a once-in-a-generation artist. Pollard has been compared by The New York Times to Mozart, Rossini, and Paul McCartney (in the same sentence) and everyone from P. J. Harvey, Radiohead, R.E.M., the Strokes, and U2 has sung his praises and cited his music as an influence. But it all started rather prosaically when Pollard, a fourth-grade teacher in his early thirties from Dayton, Ohio, began recording songs with drinking buddies in his basement. James Greer, an acclaimed music writer and former Spin editor, enjoys a unique advantage in having played in the band for two years. This personal connection grants him unparalleled insight and complete access to the workings of Pollard’s muse.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Robert Pollard and his Band! .......2007-03-01

I was excited to read this book since being turned onto Guided By Voices about 5 years ago. I was reluctant in a way to read this because a bandmate of mine who is the biggest GBV fan I know said after he read it he hated Robert Pollard. I was taken back a bit but after reading this book I can see why. On the other hand I can see why he was the way he is and why he's the songwriting genius he is today. The book should be called "Robert Pollard and his Band of Friends or Enemies." The guy was a stuck up jerk at times but did things his own way and if it wasn't done his way you're out. Its a great book to get an insight from band members, label heads and desriptions of shows from beginning to GBV's very end. A great band and book depicting what they were about during recording, rehearsals and live gigs. Who was with it and who wasn't. Most of all its a look into the life of Robert Pollard and his loytalty to his friends and the integrity of the band whoever was in it at at the time. If your fan of the band check it out. Only downfall is the 30 pages waisted on the list numerous GBV records and other releases. Overkill if you ask me.

5 out of 5 stars No better coverage is available........2007-01-07

Guided By Voices' Robert Pollard has been involved in the rock scene for over twenty years, has been compared to Paul McCartney to Rossini, and has staged live rock performances which stand out from the crowd. Written with exclusive cooperation from Pollard, GUIDED BY VOICES: A BRIEF HISTORY delves into his music and the vast circle of rock musicians which have contributed to his development. From the band's many incarnations to Pollard's constantly changing sound, no better coverage is available.

    4 out of 5 stars Human amusements.......2006-03-09

This is a pretty good book, sez this non-obsessed GBV fan. Greer's intro was too cute by half, and fortunately he tones his writing down a bit for most of the book. Unlike other reviewers, I found Greer's fawning was balanced by many examples showing that Robert Pollard is a flawed individual. I enjoyed the contributions by Pollard's son. I didn't think much of the analysis of songs because Bob's answer for half of them is that they were about nothing. One correction for the author: The Denver show at which Buffalo fell off the stage was not held at night or in a club; it was held in late afternoon in a parking lot. I was there.

3 out of 5 stars a nice resource for the unobsessed.......2006-03-02

It is interesting to read the different reviews here. I think the criticisms reveal more about the critics than the book. I agree with the following shortcomings: not enough about the musical process, approach, and details of album making. (Bee 1000 is a masterpiece and it is good to hear from Pollard's website that a scholar is devoting a single work to the album.) Even if Greer is a "yesman" as a reviewer suggests, he still provides fruitful insights and titillating minutae that the lay-listener enjoys (see the praising reviews). Of course, the worshippers and indie-obsessor's already know all of these minutae and so are rather demanding. So, another book, less "inside," is certainly in order; one that reveals more about the specifics of Pollard's musical process. But give Greer a break! He's provided a nice resource for the unobsessed.

    1 out of 5 stars Sigh.......2006-02-21

"Hunting Accidents" is a poorly written, poorly researched and poorly structured disappointment from a sychophant former band member. Robert Pollard is a great songwriter and musician, and based on a handful of encounters I've had with the man, a very nice guy. But he is not Jesus Christ. Whether James Greer is unaware of this this, or Pollard's camp wouldn't allow a more balanced portrait, I don't know. But the sickening level of butt-kissing on display here makes it impossible to take even the good bits seriously.

Not that I need dirt neccesarily, though the trail of ex-friends Pollard has left in his wake suggest a selfish streak Greer is unwilling to follow. I'd just like more information on Pollard's art and less about his group of jockish drinking buddies back in Dayton. (Seriously, Jim, are you trying to impress us with your seat at the cool kid's table?)

How does Bob write songs? How often does he write them? What inspires him? How did he adjust to touring after living in one place for so long? How will he approach his art as his 50th birthday looms? I don't know, because Greer doesn't delve into these (seemingly) important topics with any depth. Also, why take Pollard's "I'm not an alcoholic, I'm a drunk" fuzzy logic at face value? Shouldn't a biographer push a little more, and try to find out what lies beneath the subject's claims?

Have I mentioned how poorly this is written? Never have I read a book where the author tries so pathetically to justify his own cliches. (Heres's a tip, Jim: Don't mock your crappy writing, improve on it in the editing process.)

Again, I think GBV is a great band. But this book is indicative of how Pollard surrounds himself with yesmen rather than honest critics that will prod him to do better.

    The Rainforest Grew All Around

Yum, a rainforest cookie recipe, informative sidebars, and luscious illustrations, make this lovely book a keeper! The text by author Susan K. Mitchell is a cumulative rhyme that takes the reader through life in the rainforest from giant trees to tiny insects and frogs. It highlights both plants and animals.

Connie McLennan's illustrations are both rich and informative. Children will enjoy the variations of subject and texture in the paintings, perhaps discovering small plants and insects not mentioned in the text. The book is a marvelous blend of text and illustration. Besides the recipe there are two matching games at the back. The verse is adapted from the old English cumulative folk song, "The Tree In The Wood." Children ages 3 to 7 will delight in this book, which will be enjoyed for years to come in both home and classroom libraries.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful images in words and illustrations.......2007-05-02

Sylvan Dell Publishing has provided yet another great educational tool with The Rainforest Grew All Around by Susan K. Mitchell, illustrated by Connie McLennan. The main text of this colorful children's book tells the cycle of creation of a rainforest, from seed to seed. This part of the story is meant to be sung to the tune of "The Green Grass Grows All Around." Colorful illustrations of different aspects of rainforest life highlight each verse. In addition, the main text is bordered with sidebars full of more in-depth information about the rainforest features each verse introduces.

As in all Sylvan Dell books, the story is followed up with engaging activities. There are several matching games, thoughtful questions, and a recipe for Rainforest Cookies. The activity pages can be downloaded from the Sylvan Dell website for easy use. The Rainforest Grew All Around can be a springboard for discussion with children about other life cycles and ecosystems, as it will inevitably pique their interest.

The author, Susan K. Mitchell, is a preschool teacher inspired to write the story by her class's reaction to the "Green Grass" song. She is the author of Stone Pizza, a modern take on the Stone Soup tale and Kersplatypus, a future Sylvan Dell release.

Connie McLennan created the beautiful illustrations in the picture book, and has illustrated various other Sylvan Dell releases, including Water Beds: Sleeping in the Ocean and Octavia and Her Purple Ink Cloud.
