Book Description
A creature whispers:
If not for the cat,
And the scarcity of cheese,
I could be content.
Who is this creature?
What does it like to eat?
Can you solve the riddle?
Seventeen haiku composed by master poet Jack Prelutsky and illustrated by renowned artist Ted Rand ask you to think about seventeen favorite residents of the animal kingdom in a new way. On these glorious and colorful pages you will meet a mouse, a skunk, a beaver, a hummingbird, ants, bald eagles, jellyfish, and many others. Who is who? The answer is right in front of you. But how can you tell? Think and wonder and look and puzzle it out!
Customer Reviews:
If not for this book / And the witty poems it makes / I would hate haiku.......2005-07-03
For years and years now a curse has been floating over Jack Prelutsky's head. The curse reads, and I am quoting here, "Thou shalt make no silly poem books without being compared, first and foremost, to Shel Silverstein at all times". Mr. Prelutsky has labored under this curse for years, finding his own way to express himself but undoubtedly gritting his teeth whenever someone, however innocently, says, "It's good. But I think I like 'Where the Sidewalk Ends' better". View now Jack Prelutsky's greatest hour. In this, quite possibly the best book of haiku for children, he has teamed with remarkable watercolor artist Ted Rand to bring us one of the most beautiful, most well-written, and most deeply moving books of poetry to hit the market in a long long time. I don't usually bite my cheek in frustration when a book is not awarded a Caldecott Honor after publication, but I do so now (painfully) in spades.
The book contains seventeen sweet and simple haikus. The titular poem reads, "If not for the cat / And the scarcity of cheese / I could be content". This sort of sets the tone for the rest of the book. For once, Prelutsky isn't afraid to bring out the big guns. He throws out large words that kids will learn simply by reading the poems in the context in which they occur. Says a jellyfish of deep blue, "Boneless, translucent / We undulate, undulate, / Gelatinously". The humor of these poems is of a slower sweeter nature than you'll find in books like, "Baby Uggs Are Hatching". A particularly Yoda-like sloth comments with baby on its chest, "I am slow I am / Slowest of the slow I am / In my tree I am". I better stop copying down these poems word for word, but you get the idea. They're all remarkably well-written and some carry a slight philosophical bent. Of these, the sweetest and most meaningful comes from the surprising source of a mother kangaroo and her joey.
The pictures? The pictures are breathtaking. It's no wonder that the image of a hummingbird sipping nectar was taken as the cover of the New York Public Libraries Best Children's Books of 2004. Using a mix of sumi brush drawings in India ink, traditional watercolors, chalk, spatter (no idea), and printmaking techniques on BOTH rag stock watercolor paper and rice paper ... well let's just say a lot of work has gone down here. I could literally flip through this book all day just staring at the images. Whether it's a small delicate white moth nearing a homey if dangerous candle flame or a sweet playful otter cracking red spiky urchins on its tummy, Rand has given us a book that is truly worth reading.
At a certain time of year teachers will enter my library and ask for recommendations of haiku for their children. Before, my suggestions were always half-hearted well-I-heard-this-was-goods. Now I have a book to be excited about. Even if you don't particularly like haiku as a form (like myself) you will adore this book. It brings out the best in its author, its illustrator, and the style itself. One of the few must-purchase picture books currently in stores.
poems on animals.......2005-04-20
This is a collection of haiku poems. There are 17 in all. Each poems is about a different animal. Paired with the poem is a picture of the animal the poems is about.
The book was a great introduction for young students on the haiku style poem.
This would make a great book for teachers to use in the classroom during a poetry unit.
Magnificent!.......2004-12-05
A visual feast.
A literary delight.
(You'll feel for the mouse.)
Haiku is simple enough in theory: it's three lines, each with five syllables, seven and then five again. Here, poet Prelutsky and illustrator Rand show how the simple can be made sublime in the hands of true masters.
A third-grade friend, having looked at the book and heard the 'rules' of Haiku, immediately composed a poem to her pet hamster:
We scurry like mice.
We run from nighttime to dawn.
We are soft and cute.
(I'd mention that my friends are now e-mailing each other in Haiku, but if you hadn't read the book, you wouldn't understand...)
This book is a treasure for children of all ages.
And would someone PLEASE get that poor mouse some cheese!

One cool kitty-cat.......2007-09-25
I always fancied Hello Kitty, and my 2-year-old daughter loves cats. So I knew she'd be a big fan of the colorful, whimsical images in this hardcover book. (She also has a habit of tearing colorful pages out of books, but so far I've been able to keep this one intact!) This is really more of a "big girl's" book because of the silly haikus that correspond with the images, but it sure is fun to flip through. Le chat en France? Mais oui!
Not bad....................2007-01-09
Charming and very 'fluffy', its what you would expect ! Aimed more for the younger Kitty fan, its basically nothing more than a selection of cute kitty photos, but good fun.

Book Description
Cats share our homes, our lives, and the sunny spot in our favorite chair. We may like to think we own them, but in reality, they have the upper hand, uh, paw. Alternately maddeningly aloof and irresistibly affectionate, mysterious yet familiar, they always keep us guessing about their inner motives and thoughts. And just how might a cat express its innermost thoughts? Undoubtedly in haiku, the ancient 17-syllable form of poetry from China and Japan. With clever illustrations in the style of traditional Japanese woodcuts, more than 100 witty "catku" are collected into chapters such as "The Way of the Hunter," "Mind/Body/Spirit," "The Path to Enlightenment," and "The Physical World." Each one illuminates the Zen-like nature of the cat.The prudence of the hunter:"Stealthy and silent,I stalk birds-but listen forThe can opener."The vagaries of the physical world:"Seeking solitudeI am locked in the closet. For once I need you."Catku will delight cat lovers who will recognize the feline attitude reflected in these verses and perhaps realize that the so-called lazy cat perched on the back of a favorite chair is really just in deep meditation, seeking the path to enlightenment while composing a few more catku.

What is the Sound of One Cat Lady Giggling.......2005-04-15
If you love cats you'll love this. I've added 2 of the catkus to my signature in my e-mails:
Kittens, butterflies,
And sunsets need no reasons.
Add sardines to that.
You seek fulfillment
Through love, wealth, travel, career.
Have you tried kittens?
I actually read this book several times while waiting for doctor's appointments. Usually a light book like this would not interest me enough to distract me from my nervousness before an appointment. But this one had me giggling. The illustrations are lovely. This one's essential for cat lovers.

Truly Poetry for All Seasons.......2000-04-20
This is one of the most beautiful books of poetry I've ever read, and I've read a lot of poetry collections working in an elementary school library. Children of all ages appreciate these poems, many of them haiku, by Japanese masters of the art of brief imagery. If your kids think poetry isn't really poetry unless it rhymes, share this book with them. Demi's incredibly lovely paintings enhance the beauty and idea of each poem. This sweet book inspires kids to try writing their own poetry.

Book Description
Precocious, endearing, and always battling something they shouldnt, Cat Haiku is a humorous collection of 150 haikus, with accompanying line drawings, that captures the psyche of your favourite puss. This book distills the essence of kitty behaviour in the 5, 7, 5 scheme of classic Japanese poetry.
Customer Reviews:
A psychiatrist reads Cat Haiku.......2006-02-21
CAt Haiku is a wonderful book. I have practiced psychiatry for 45 years and would have trouble explaining my patients as well as Deborah Coates explains her cats. She gets to the essence of being a cat- as far as any human being can. She also makes it fun to be in a room with a cat and to try to figure out which Haiku fits your cat on any given day or hour. William L. Clovis, M. D.
it'll make you smile!.......2005-10-24
It's fun, it's funny/ it's all about cats-what's not/ to like? Get it now!
Sorry but Not Haiku.......2003-05-25
It's a funny idea, but really has nothing to do with Haiku poetry at all. And that, I'm afraid, is VERY disappointing. I recommend checking out "Take A Deep Breath: The Haiku Way to Inner Peace" to anyone who is really interested in understanding and truly enjoying Haiku poetry.
Fantastic, funny, and feline!.......2003-04-06
I found this book in a local 'art shop' and loved it then, but refused to pay full price for it. It was delightful enough to stay in my mind (2 years later), though, and now when I find copies on sale, I buy them to give them as gifts to my literate 'friends-of-cats'.
Weak Imitation.......2003-01-21
If you are going to read cat haiku,
you might want to try other books.
Much of this is similar to other
cat haiku books, but it's not original
in its idea. Personally, I would
recommend Catnips: A Book of Haiku
on Cats. It was first with the idea.

Entertaining and Creative.......2003-01-03
As a Massachusetts teacher, I found this
book excellent in introducing students to
the creative process. Unlike most poetry
it's non-intimidating and an inspiration for
students to explore their own creativity
and love of animals. Best part, though,
is the humor. Kids actually enjoy the poetry.
Not many poetry books can claim that. Recommend
it to other teachers starting creative
writing.
Quaint and sparse.......2001-07-14
I liked a few of the poems, but they don't quite capture the "essence" of cats for me. The haikus lack the discipline of followng the 5-7-5 syllables format. The illustrations are nice.

An original and entertaining blend of poetry and cats. These one-liners and three-liners will make you laugh if you believe cats are special.
Catnips is a wonderful book for cat lovers........1998-04-13
Joseph Gustafson truely captures the essence of the feline world in this book. He is indeed a cat lover, and portrays, through haiku poetry, moments of wonder, surprise and fun that cat lovers worldwide understand and appreciate. I particularly liked the haiku form. It is clean and precise. Those of you unfamilar with poetry will not, perhaps, even recognize this as poetry. In any event, Mr. Gustafson does wonderful work. I recommend this book for all cat lovers. The price is right, also making it a great gift.

Book Description
You've gotta learn to defend yourself. Never let your enemy know what you are feeling.
-- The soldier assigned to protect Melba
Please, God, let me learn how to stop being a warrior. Sometimes I just need to be a girl.
-- Melba's diary, on her sixteenth birthday
In 1957 Melba Pattillo turned sixteen. That was also the year she became a warrior on the front lines of a civil rights firestorm. Following the landmark 1954 Supreme Court ruling, Brown v. Board Education, she was one of nine teenagers chosen to integrate Little Rock's Central High School. This is her remarkable story.
You will listen to the cruel taunts of her schoolmates and their parents. You will run with her from the threat of a lynch mob's rope. You will share her terror as she dodges lighted sticks of dynamite, and her pain as she washes away the acid sprayed into her eyes. But most of all you will share Melba's dignity and courage as she refuses to back down.

I T CAME TO PASS.......2007-08-13
sO MUCH OUR RACE OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN THROUGH , AND THE BOOK TELLS A LOT OF THE TRIUMPHS WE WENT THROUGH, AND STILL SOME OF THOSE THINGS STILL ARE GOING ON TODAy. So the title it came to pass is the right title because god said in his word nothing but the rightous.
Repetition Galore.......2007-07-05
Melba Pattillo Beals' "Warriors Don't Cry" was amateur at best. While the purpose of the memoir is inspiring, Beals just appeared to be a broken record.
Upon reading other reviews, I thought this memoir was going to be heartbreaking and inspiring. Yet as I began to read, a pattern developed. The book dragged on and on yet there seemed to be no progression. I found myself void of emotion throughout the whole recount. Needless to say, this was a disappointment, and extremely poorly written.
Warriors Don't Cry.......2007-06-27
We are coming up on the 50th anniversary of the integration of Central High in Little Rock. This book is written by one of the courageous students who braved a racist mob to claim the equality and justice we are all promised in a democracy. The photographs of one student, Elizabeth Eckford, facing the abusive and threatening crowds became iconic, part of history and public memory. What is not as well known is what life was like for the nine students inside the school everyday. Everyday they were threatened, physically attacked, suffered abusive language and attitudes from the white, segregationist students. The author, Melba Patillo Beals, is an extraordinary writer, storyteller and she is blazingly honest. As a way of celebrating July 4th, read this book and give it to every young person over the age of 10 that you know.
"With All Deliberate Speed . . .".......2007-05-15
Melba Joy Pattillo Beals was at the heart of a vortex of history as one of the "Little Rock Nine" who integrated Arkansas' preeminent public school in 1957. In the wake of the landmark 1954 Supreme Court decision, "Brown v. Board of Education," schools throughout the United States were ordered to integrate "with all deliberate speed."
Violent opposition to the integration of Central High led to the garrisoning of Little Rock by the 101st Airborne Division, the first (and thus far only) active-engagement use of Federal troops in the South since Reconstruction.
Ms. Beals (now a journalist) has a journalist's eye as she recalls her experiences at Central High that year. Drawing on her memories and on the copious and detailed diaries she kept, Ms. Beals puts us right into her well-shined saddle shoes, and right into the halls of Central.
At first glance, Melba Pattillo would have seemed to be the wrong sort of person to be on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement. At fifteen, she was a girl given to romantic daydreams, a girl seemingly perfectly content to listen to Buddy Holly on the radio while cuddling with her stuffed animal collection amidst her flouncy white comforter and matching pillows.
But deep inside, Melba Pattillo had a core of steel. Her mother held an advanced degree in Education, and her gentle, stern, and unyielding Grandmother India had an unshakeable faith both in God, and in Melba, a faith which she transmitted almost by osmosis to her granddaughter---"God's warriors don't cry, child."
If other members of Melba's family and community did not share these ideas, ideals, and values, at least they all understood that this remarkable young lady (and her eight fellow classmates) was doing something that needed to be done, something that portended a sea change in the world.
But for all the fine rhetoric, life at Central was a hell of crowded corridors, shadowy stairwells, and constant terror. From day one, avowed segregationists in the school, in the community, and in the government (including Governor Orval Faubus) tried to break the back of the integration by means foul and fouler. Adult members of Little Rock's White Citizens Council educated their charges at Central in the ways and means of torture.
Anyone stunned by the constant reports of current-day "violence in our schools" will be shattered by Ms. Beals' seemingly endless recitation of the horrors inflicted upon the Little Rock Nine in the halls of Central High. Being cursed at, spat upon, and called a "N****r" was nothing much; open threats with weapons, violent beatings and stompings, stabbings, scaldings with near-boiling hot water, dousings with unspeakable liquids, strangulations, attempts at immolation, and acid sprays in the eyes were commonplace. These were not just hurtful acts. They were often life-threatening, and the passivity (or even gleeful acquiescence) of most of the CHS school officials in the face of such ongoing abuse of these children put in their care is enough to enrage the reader.
The lack of direct adult interest in what the Little Rock Nine were going through is paralyzing to consider. Little was done to protect them, even by their supporters. The 101st was pulled out of Little Rock in a deal brokered by Beltway Bandits, and what was actually happening to the Little Rock Nine was abstract to the politicians. The price these nine black teens paid for our freedom is beyond valuation.
And if the constancy of the violence portrayed in the telling of the tale somewhat blunts the reader's emotions after a time, it is harder to feel blunted when Melba Beals talks about the wrenching changes that went on within herself. Her fame (or notoriety among segregationists) meant that her home became a fortress-prison from which she could rarely escape. Drive-by shootings and bomb threats kept most of the lifelong friends she had made among "our people" (as she calls the blacks in her community) far away, and she was not invited to parties and outings. Holidays passed without the usual gaggle of friends and relations. The sad retelling of her unattended Sweet Sixteen Party is a heartbreaking moment in time, and her sorrow still reaches across the years to touch the reader.
But there are the finer moments as well: Every day spent at Central is at the end a day of victory; her meetings with remarkable men such as Thurgood Marshall are treasured moments in her life; her gratitude to the brave men of the 101st Airborne and the task they undertook to uphold the law of the land just so a girl could go to school where she chose, is inspiring; her first few tentative friendships with some white Central High students gives us cause for hope. Melba Pattillo traded her childhood for adulthood too soon, and her innocence for a hard-honed survival instinct by force.
We live in a far different society today, and in part that is due to Melba Beals. We can thank whatever Spirit moves us that she was given the talent to write this incredible memoir. This is an essential read.
Very good book.......2007-03-30
I loved this book. It was very sad to hear about all the hardships that the 9 students had to endure to integrate Central High. I think it made them better people and I feel sorry that they had to go through those things. The description used by Melba Pattillo Beals was excellent and very useful when you were trying to get a feel for how they felt. You almost felt as if you were there with them and were going through the same things. I would definetly recommend this book to other readers. I would avise that the reader be a little bit older so that they can understand the things that the blacks were going through. Other than being a harsh book because of the things that needed to be describe it was an amazing book.

Recommended for public and grade school library collections........2006-11-06
Written by Stephanie Fitzgerald, The Little Rock Nine: Struggle for Integration is a historical accounting for young adults about the integration of the all-white Central High School of Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957. The pioneering efforts of the students would open the way to greater equality in America's educational system, and show the power of freedom to all Americans. Black-and-white vintage photographs illustrate the straightforward narration of a vital turning point in history. Recommended for public and grade school library collections.

Customer Reviews:
Little Rock Nine.......2004-05-10
The book is a history book, about the Little Rock Nine. I only read the first 3 chapters (which I may add were full with facts for my research paper), but they were good. Factual. :)
Customer Reviews:
arkansas history for young people.......2007-05-22
excellent background history of Arkansas. It is directed and elementary children, but is entertaing and informative with alot of good pictures. I would have liked a little more specifics on the american native people. Particularly their names, as I have toured Arkansas and ther are alot of memorials to specific people such a Sarricin or Saracen in Pine bluff. Also, arkasas was pivito durin the wartime for WW2.
