Book Description

She's A Hot Demon On The Run From Hell-- Which Isn't Easy To Do In Heels.

Once upon a time, Jezebel was a powerful succubus, capable of seducing men and sucking out their souls. But that was before Hell put a bounty on her head. Now her only chance to escape a fate far worse than death is to live as a mortal, losing herself in a sea of unfamiliar humanity, in a place where sinners walk hand-in-hand with saints--a place like Belle's strip club in New York City.

Working as an exotic dancer is a piece of cake for a former demon who once specialized in sex. Taking money from men? Please. It's like leading lawyers to the Lake of Fire. Plus the lingerie is great. But she hadn't counted on meeting sexy Paul Hamilton, a man haunted by his past. Good-bye, succubus; hello, lovestruck. Learning all about how complicated--and pleasurable--love can be, Jezebel thinks she's turned her back on Hell.

But Hell hasn't stopped looking for her. The secrets Jezebel holds are the most dangerous of all, the kind every demon in the Underworld would do their worst to protect. Demons are closing in, which is enough to make Jezebel shiver in her G-string. But it's her love for Paul that's going to have deadly consequences...

Jezebel the succubus has run away from hell. Taking a job as an exotic dancer, she thinks she's made a fresh start. But it's not that easy to put her past behind her.

It's so refreshing to read about a heroine who is completely comfortable in her own skin. Jezebel/Jesse has a sharp wit and a deliciously wicked sense of humour. She's an incredibly sexual creature and revels in being a succubus, so her new career choice of stripping is a natural one for her to make.

Initially it's hard to work out how we can have sympathy for her, she's such a selfish creature of instinct and need. However, once she takes human form, her newfound mortality begins to change her and she begins a slow almost unnoticeable transition from amoral demon to something else. The first experiences Jesse has as a human are incredibly well written and make you realise how strange it must be to see the world for the first time.

There are really two stories being told here; the first is Jesse's flight from hell and how she copes with being a mortal; the second is about the events leading up to her decision to flee hell (told in flashback). Unfortunately the flashbacks (of which there are several) are intercut with the main story and aren't signposted that well (the first happens in Chapter 6). Leaving the reader confused about what is happening, until you get used to the style.

For people who like to know: - this is written in first person, and there is some strong swearing, but this is in context and is something the person who said it would say.

I think it's slightly misleading that this has been marketed as a romance, I believe it's much more of an urban fantasy. The romantic subplot definitely takes second place to Jesse's story. But this shouldn't put readers off - Jezebel is such a rare outspoken heroine, it's worth taking the time to get to know her. (And kudos to Ms. Kessler for using a Ghostbusters reference. :) )

The Road to Hell (Book 2) is released in November 2007.

5 out of 5 stars A soulless demon finds love.......2007-08-22

Jezebel is a 4,000 year old succubus (a demon) whose job is to entice people into hell through horizontal means. However when she goes AWOL from Hell, tricks a witch into making her human (and stealing that witch's form and credit cards/ID) she sets out on life as a newly born human in New York. The author writes her first experiences of being human, drinking coffee, eating muffins, being in public spaces etc excellently - these were really enjoyable parts of the book.

Jezebel, or Jessie, isn't at all a sympathetic character to start with. She steals the witch's identity, doesn't care about other people and seems largely amoral. However her new human nature is clearly changing that part of her character and she starts to care for people and to change. She gets a job as a stripper in a club, Hell's Belles, which suits her skills from her former career admirably. However she's already bumped into Paul and he is about to cause another big change in her life. On the run from other demons who are trying to drag her back to hell, protected merely by her humanity and with the amulet she wears round her neck, can Jessie keep herself safe and out of hell? And what is it that caused her to leave Hell in the first place?

Rather confusingly a few chapters into this book Jessie seemed to be back working as a succubus and leading a man to hell. It became clear eventually that this was a flashback and there were other examples of this in the book - it might have been helpful for the fact this was backstory to be more clear. However these sections, where Jessie is in Hell, were fascinating; somehow the author has written her description of the different levels in Hell and some of the characters in a lighthearted and yet scary way with definite overtones of Dante.

This is an earthy book with fairly explicit descriptions and a woman who is certainly at home with her feminine side. However there is more to this story than just sex as there's an interesting plot and some significant characterisation of Jessie. Paul, the hero, is rather more of a cipher and we almost learn more about the Satyr Daunuan but there are many good side characters in this story which lift it above the average paranormal romance and made it an easy and fun read.

5 out of 5 stars One hell of a story........2007-07-29

I had a good time reading this book, and it is obvious that first-time author Jackie Kessler did the same in writing it. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Ms. Kessler writes in a clear, straightforward fashion that makes the reading a pleasure. Also, I very much liked the plot and the characters. What fun! I highly recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars 2.5 to 3 stars.......2007-07-22

This book is an easy read, but it is not one that will accompany you once you close the back cover. The book is fun, light but I feel it lackes force or something...

If you like easy reads that don't defy standards, this one is a good book to pass the time. If you want something stronger, pick another book.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the prudish, for sure.......2007-07-09

If you think a book titled "Hell's Belles" -- starring a succubus named Jezebel and taking place largely inside a New York City strip club, no less -- might dip into areas of a sexual nature, you'd be right. First-time author Jackie Kessler is unabashedly lascivious in her writing, so much so one wonders exactly what lies in the depths of her untapped imagination. But "Hell's Belles" exceeds the bounds of lusty paranormal romances, in part by making Jez's love interest one of the least interesting aspects of the story.

Far more appealing is Jezebel's flight from Hell, where her job was the seduction and disposal of evil men. But big changes are afoot in the underworld -- saying what, exactly, would be telling too much -- and Jez has fled to the world above to shed her demon skin and lose herself among the mortals in New York City's thriving sex trade.

But "demon" isn't a job that comes with a cozy retirement plan, and Hell's minions are still trying to track Jesse down and bring her back to the fold. Meanwhile, changes in Hell itself are revealed to readers slowly, leading to far more intelligent theological philosophy than I ever expected to see here.

But yeah, there's a lot of sex, talk about sex, thought about sex and sexual innuendoes, too, so prudes need not apply.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars walking the talk.......2000-01-10

This book is essentially a complete users manual on how to apply essential oils in a manner consistent with Ayurvedic healing. From start to finish this book radiates sincerity and hands on knowledge. We immediately believe that the authors are not simply talking the talk but are walking the talk.

The book opens with an introduction to Ayurveda, including the 5 elements, 3 doshas and 6 tastes. The 15 subdoshas are described along with a description of typical symptoms of imbalances and essential oils that balance those doshas. The authors provide a novel analysis of the effects of essential oils using two of the three taste polarities:1) hot-cold and 2)wet-dry. This allows them to classify the essential oils in terms of their effects on the doshas.

The chapters describing the history and manufacture of essential oils are informative and full of interesting anedotes.

Other useful features include: how to apply essential oils with compress, in the bath, inhalation etc.: methods on how to choose essentials oils; a complete list of herbs and their healing attributes; a list of Ayurvedic healing centers; a list of suppliers of essential oils; and references to explore further the concepts and methods presented.

Anyone interested in a practical introduction to Ayurveda, Aromatherapy or both is likely to benefit from a study of this book. (1/10/2000).

A powerful truth-in-myth about the women of the Sisterhood of the Sun who have carried the light codes of consciousness for the coming Golden Age. The book has been a source of deep healing for the wounded feminine spirit - a call to all women to learn from the powerful archetypes it portrays.

This series of twelve stories includes the lives of Mary Magdalen, Lilith, Isis, Morgaine, and a young woman, Isabel, whose tragic life ends in the fires of the Inquisition. The loss of the Codes of Light with her death is offset by their presence in the lives of the Priestesses of the Sun in the Inca lineage. An activating account of the enduring feminine spirit, The Lineage of the Codes of Light is a must-read for all conscious women and men.

    5 out of 5 stars A Deep Knowing.......2006-09-01

"This book is fiction...unless, of course it isn't!" If youre called to this book in the first place then you're definitely open and aware of certain key truths already. On the path so to speak. The contents of the pages in this book are designed to open and awaken powerful truths within us. I recommend this book for both Women and Men. But this is the story of the sacred feminine and the unbroken lineage of women who have held the light codes for humanity since zep-tepi (the begining of the new star seeding on this planet). I've done extensive research on all topics this book touches on and I have never come across such a powerful "truth-in-myth" book that ties all intuitively discerned truths together.

    3 out of 5 stars hmmmm!?.......2005-12-29

The quote, "This book is fiction, unless it isn't..." is laughable because this book is very definitely fiction. This is a very thinnly veiled attempt to pass off a colletion of, self-prescribed "Channelings" as truth, and while there most certainly is truth in this book, it is still fiction. I must say that these singular tales are interesting even if untrue and there is a quality of activation within them that is uplifting. Not a waste of my time at all.

3 out of 5 stars An important Prequel.......2005-09-18

Rating this book with stars (appropriate, given the subject matter) is difficult as the rating depends on who is reading it and why.

As literature, 3 stars, as it is not particularly well written, although it becomes somewhat better as the book progresses. It also covers ground that is already well known and explored within the metaphysical community.

However, for someone unfamiliar with the concepts, it is a good basic introduction, so 4 stars.

I recommend the book as it will prepare the reader for the more complex and much better written companion book, Brotherhood of the Magi, which I rate at 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Are you ready for this?.......2005-03-05

I am awed at Jessie Ayani's skill in telling the story of the Sisterhood and imbuing it with such potent energy. I may be one of the pickiest people in the world when it comes to writing, and even the need for better editing in this book couldn't dampen the pure magic of it for me. I read this book slowly, rationing it so that I could extract the most out of it. I read most of it while exercising, and that really seemed to help me easily integrate the energy shifts this powerful book catalyzes.

Truly, if you are meant to read this book, and are ready for it, you will be drawn into it. You will feel new openings within you, deep memories surfacing, greater activation of the Codes of Light within you, and new realizations about who you are and why you are here. You will feel more empowered, and know you are a part of something wondrous. If it's not for you, or you're not ready to read it, you will not be attracted. But if you are, be ready to expand!

2 out of 5 stars A good idea badly written.......2004-01-06

I wanted to like this book. It sounded like a great concept. But I couldn't get past the first 50 pages. When I read fiction I want to get caught up in the story and enjoy it. This book was irritating. It's a series of stories written in third person, a la Mother Goose, interspersed with ridiculous scenes of "Mother Goose" talking to her listeners. Actually, the author has her laughing her sentences rather than saying them. God does she need an editor. "'New codes are begging to be opened within me and I need to turn my attention to the attainment of their frequency. In other words, I have to get to work on myself!' The whole group laughed at Leah's last remark and the matter-of-fact way she stated it. She joined them, then asked if they had any questions or if there was any additional background information they felt they might need. Katy cleared her throat and ventured forth with a question." Ugh.

5 out of 5 stars Fear Not! The Return of the Light is here!.......2007-10-08

Even though this project has ended in an abrupt way, there is still hope and much to be learned from this book. I bought this book 3 years ago and to the best of my knowledge and understanding, I believe this book has transformed me for the better. Yes discernment is key when reading or channeling these higher beings but the open soul, heart, and spirit knows what is light and what is dark. I would still recommend this book because there are a lot of powerful tools if used correctly with an good intention will bring light to those who ask for it. One must be protected at all times since there are a lot of opposing forces that will try everything they can to stop you from returning to the light. Listen to your God-self and be the judge of what this message can bring to your life. Also, read many books out there... Expand you faith, trust in God, once you find the your truth and "reality" it will become clearer to you. Welcome to the next level.

Latest News (September 21, 2007) from Karen Kirschbaum written why she ending "The return of the Light Project. http://www.returnoflight.com/

Extracted from her site "..The purpose of this communication at this time is to conclude The Return Of Light. I have been a long time in coming to this conclusion, but this venture was deeply flawed from its start and inevitably ended in failure.
I cannot speak for Elora other than to say that both of us met in a wounded place, and created this teaching from a lack of wholeness. I can tell you of my part in this. Trauma created in me a deep need to give away my own power. I don't know when this happened as Spirit hasn't shown me the specifics, but it was long before I came to Earth. This need to not own my power left a gaping hole in me that allowed distortion to enter.
The bottom line is that we got hold of the wrong Heru - an impostor. He disappeared the day Elora died and hasn't been seen since. I have had a little contact with the real Heru, and believe me when I tell you that I am not all that welcoming to him. That he was so ineffectual in not stopping something in his name has made me question the benefit of working with any of the "gods." I certainly won't be channeling any time in the near future."...
"I recommended that you discard the books and do whatever it takes to deprogram your self from all of this....."

2 out of 5 stars Stream of conciousness.......2007-06-27

I'm dissapointed in this book. I wanted to understand, continue to want to understand. But the explanations in this book are breathless - very quickly presented with little in the way of justification or exploration of why... or some of the alternatives. I don't doubt the sincerity of the writer, but I don't find it credible compared to say the Lost Key of the Budha or the Dissapearing Universe. Or even Journey of Souls.

Maybe there is some reality in this - but it doesn't come across. Reads like the teacher was teaching on automatic pilot, and genuine teaching seems more grounded.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating, thought provoking read........2007-07-27

I couldn't put this book down!
As he explains the many fascinating sky and optical phenomena, Minnaert basically forces the reader to figure out for themselves as they read along with his explanations. It's very rare for a science book to pull together the big picture without losing sight of the underlying physics. This book wonderfully shows the workings of a scientist's mind, and the author's enthusiasm and creativity is infectious. Astronomers, artists and anyone with a passion for the beauty of the outdoors will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars old but important.......2006-11-10

I met this book while studying the work of the artist James Turrell; Turrell mentioned it because of his huge importance on the facts concerning the psychology of vision.
Maybe some theories appear now old, but it remains a fundamental text for understanding how we look at the world (and at the sky!), and - quoting Mr. Turrell - for beginning to "see ourselves see". For example, you will now understand why the moon seems somethimes very big or very small.
I higly recommend also Craig Adcock's book about James Turrell, because it gives many other scientifical (not to speak about artistical!) inputs about the matter.

4 out of 5 stars Still up to date fascinating book.......1999-03-12

Explains many of the phenomena occuring in nature regarding both light and colour. Encourages active exploration by yourself. Good reference work but sometimes long.

4 out of 5 stars Very readable description of optical effects seen outdoors........1997-12-03

Hundreds of optical phenomena visible to the naked eye are described in this classic text, ranging from colors in rainbows, halos, "sun-dogs" and other effects from water droplets and ice crystals in the atmosphere, to the iridescent colors of an oil spill and the visual effects of wet branches in front of street lamps. Explanations are aimed at the layman. Many line drawings and some b+w photographs accompany the sometimes wonderfully old-fashioned text. If you have ever wondered what some of the puzzling optical effects are that you see outdoors, then this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars scientific optical classic in an economy edition.......1997-06-27

It is impossible to truly review this book. Well over its 40 years old, it has become a classic. It attempts to explain, with little math but excellent science, everything we see from the appearance of the horizon, to the rainbow, to the light shining of telephone cables. This edition is old fashioned in appearance, there are no fancy full color spreads. It is a well written book, clearly organized that shows a grasp of the subject and a deep affection for it

Uncertainty stalks Octavio Paz. In Light of India is Paz's return to issues addressed in his poems of India that were inspired by his residence there three decades earlier. The paradoxes of a troubled nation are persistent, and Paz revisits the unfathomable facets of India with an eye on his Mexican homeland. Beneath the sensuous veneer of modern India lies a complex lattice of religious tendrils that reach into and influence Indian history, society, literature, and art. Paz follows these tendrils as well as anyone can, piecing together a nation of beauty, profundity, and enigma. Profundity aside, if Paz were writing about dust particles, he'd be worth reading.

    Book Description

“One of the most brilliant and original essayists in any language” (Washington Post Book World) reflects on the six years he spent in India as Mexican ambassador-and reveals how the people and culture of that extraordinary land changed his life. Translated by Eliot Weinberger.

5 out of 5 stars Lyrical remembrance of time spent in India by a poet.......2007-07-08

This book is a lyrical remembrance of the time spent in India by Octavio Paz, a celebrated poet, who served briefly as an attaché in the Mexican embassy in India. It is a fascinating exposition of the country's landscape, history and the rich tapestry of culture. In spite of being caught between two worlds, his native Mexico and India, which assumes mythic proportions, he notices such a plethora of details.

"The Antipodes of Coming and Going" is a poetic journal of his days in India. He notices with such clarity the extraordinary richness of sight, sound, smells and effect of India. "Religions, Castes, Language" gives an overview of India but has some factual errors. The occassional factual errors like "The British Empire, for the first time in Indian history, united all the people under its domain, something their predecessors-the Maurya, the Guptas, the Mughals-could never achieve" doesn't bother at all.

"A Project of Nationhood" is where Paz compares Islamic,Hindu and Western civilization in their relation to India. This and the last section "The Full and the Empty" where he celebrates the soul of India - these two sections reveal the genius of Paz.

His last question "In what time do we live"? is ever relevant in India.

3 out of 5 stars In search of India -- through the lens of a Mexican poet.......2003-07-31

This book is an odd medley of genres and has a distinct "entre deux mondes" quality. It briefly starts as a travelogue, as Octavio Paz, describes his sea journey during the 1950s from his diplomatic posting at the Mexican Embassy in Paris to his first assignment in India where he would later return, in the 1960s, as Mexican ambassador. In many ways, I enjoyed these thirty odd first pages, replete with images from the crossing of the Suez Canal to the docks of Bombay and over rail tracks to Delhi, much more than the rest of the book.

The bulk of the book is an impressionistic, enigmatic, and often confusing essay on Indian society, religion, castes, languages, and cosmology. Many of these difficult topics are treated too superficially for this book to be a serious historical or sociological analysis of India. While not the central thrust of this book, comparisons between Indian and Mexican history become inevitable as, for example, when Paz considers different outcomes from what he sees as a common experience in Mexico and India of an indigenous polytheistic culture colliding with an invading monotheistic faith. Or when he analyzes the impact of what he sees as two secular institutions supposedly brought to India and Mexico by colonizing forces - the civil service and army. It is rare for two important, but spatially and historically distant civilizations, to be analyzed next to each other in such a personal way. The reader will not escape a sense of forced comparisons by the author of very different historical and social settings.

But the author does not claim rigor in his analysis of India, acknowledging that "this is not a systematic study, but a more or less ordered gathering of the reflections, impressions, and objections that India provoked in me." For the reader who can view these impressions of India from a Mexican diplomat and Nobel laureate in literature on a less obvious level, this self-conscious disavowal of profound insight into India makes the book intriguing. The author may shed less light on India than he does on his native Mexico,or Latin America, more generally. Perhaps, this is his real intention.

The final pages return to the biographical style at the beginning of the book, giving glimpses into how Octavio Paz historically situates demands for political reforms which were emerging in Mexico in the late 1960s, from his vantage point in India. Ultimately, these political convulsions in Mexico, notably the student riots, culminate in his resignation as a representative of the Mexican Government in India. "I decided I could no longer represent a government that was operating in a manner so clearly opposite to my way of thinking."

Readers of his classic on Mexican society "The Labyrinth of Solitude" will sense echoes in "Light of India" which Octavio Paz concludes with a short and tender poetic swan song to his diplomatic assignment in India, invoking the Hindu deities Shiva and Parvati.

    5 out of 5 stars A poetic Journey.......2001-07-08

Octavio Paz has recorded his experience in India in a great way. I simply call it poetic. Because of the great distance between Mexcio and India, there has been very little interaction between these countries. The linguistic difference has not helped either. Therfore a book by Paz on India from his eyes as a Mexcican, is welcomme addition to the literature. It is definitley a book to have and cherish.

5 out of 5 stars A book that bridges continents.......2000-12-22

"In Light of India" is a book-length, multi-part essay in which Mexican poet Octavio Paz discusses the complex political, religious, and artistic worlds of India. Paz, who had served as his nation's ambassador to India, writes with insight and obvious affection for his subject.

Paz is a masterful prose writer. His style is smooth and clear, and full of sage-like statements. Consider this observation: "Dialogue between a poet and a saint is difficult because a poet, before speaking, must hear others--that is to say, the language, which belongs to everyone and to no one. A saint speaks with God or with himself, two forms of silence" (p. 118).

Paz covers many topics: India's ancient history, the conflict between Hindus and Muslims, the caste system, classical Sanskrit poetry, and more. But, as he notes, the book is not meant to be an exhaustive scholarly treatise. Rather, it is a very personal view of India: "this book. . . is the child not of knowledge but of love" (33). And as such, the book is rich in interesting anecdotes and fascinating insights, from Paz' account of his meeting with the guru Mother Ananda Mai to his reflection on the influence of Rabindranath Tagore upon Pablo Neruda.

"In Light of India" is a marvelous companion volume to Salman Rushdie's "The Jaguar Smile": in that volume of essays, a writer from the Indian subcontinent reflects upon a Latin American country (the reverse of Paz' project). But on its own, Paz' book is a wonderful volume both for fans of Latin American literature and for those interested in India.

    5 out of 5 stars Just brilliant........1999-10-25

A welcome change to see things through a great poet's eye. Brilliant comparisons of the cultures of two great countries Mexico and India, a culture that died and a culture that still lives and is thriving.

    Book Description

The first story collection by Roberto Bolaño —"the real thing and the rarest" (Susan Sontag).

Roberto Bolaño's story collection Last Evenings on Earth was acclaimed by Francine Prose in The New York Times Book Review as "something extraordinarily beautiful and (at least to me) entirely new.... Reading Roberto Bolaño is like hearing the secret story, being shown the fabric of the particular, watching the tracks of art and life merge at the horizon and linger there like a dream from which we awake inspired to look more attentively at the world."

"The melancholy folklore of exile," as Bolaño once put it, pervades these fourteen haunting stories. His narrators are usually writers living on the margins and grappling with private (and often unlucky) quests. Set in the Chilean exile diaspora of Latin American and Europe, and peopled by Bolano's beloved "failed generation," these stories are unimaginably gripping. One story begins: "Mauricio Silva, also known as 'The Eye,' always tried to avoid violence, even at the risk of being considered a coward, but violence, real violence, is unavoidable, at least for those of us born in Latin America during the fifties and sixties and were about twenty years old at the time of Salvador Allende's death." Last Evenings on Earth has been hailed as "sheer brilliance" (The San Francisco Chronicle), "vaguely, pervasively frightening" (The Nation) and "brilliant" (Kirkus Reviews). The stories, as Publishers Weekly noted, are "perfectly calibrated: Bolaño limns the capacity of a voice to carry despair without shading into bitterness."

5 out of 5 stars bolano wrote great stories.......2007-06-03

The title of this review sums it up fairly succinctly. There are no two ways about it; Roberto Bolano wrote really compelling short stories. Familiar elements crop up in each story: poor, unsuccessful, mostly exiled writers, looking for something--sometimes old friends, other writers, family--generally being haunted by the violence which defined their lives. Despite the seeming homogeneity of subject matter, each story manages to compel. I suppose one must credit Bolano's poetic sensibility as well as Chris Andrews's translations which have helped us to experience the poetry in English.

    5 out of 5 stars a literary stud.......2006-11-03

nobody writes likes this guy. the prose is delicious, hypnotic. Bolano makes you glad you can read. check out his work, including the two presently translated novels (they're both incredible); savor the language; be thankful for Chris Andrews, his amazing translator.

5 out of 5 stars A loss for world literature.......2006-08-28

When Chilean writer Roberto Bolano prematurely died at the age of 50 a few years ago it was a loss to world literature. By many considered as one of the most interesting of new latin american writers, Bolano in his lifetime published several novels and collections of short stories. Very little has, so far, been translated into english. For those interested in getting to know Bolanos work, Last Evenings on Earth offers an ideal starting point. These enigmatic, haunted stories will stay in your mind long after you've read them. So, while waiting for translations of Bolano masterpieces Los detectives salvajes, and 2666, allow yourself to be seduced by these magnificent short stories. Bolano novels distant Star and By Night in Chile are also available in english and are highly recommended.

    4 out of 5 stars A Latin American Master.......2006-06-09

Fourteen stories are included in this collection, by the author who died at age 50. He considered himself a poet primarily, and wrote fiction to support his family. The characters in "Last Evenings" invariably suffer early death by illness or suicide. Few, if any, of his characters achieve what Bolano calls the three highest goals of a man of letters: "fame, wealth and a large readership." Yet they toil away regardless, because they have no other choice. Bolano has a prose style utterly distinct from Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the other Latin American masters of the sixties, seventies and eighties. Bolano's style, in contrast, is flat and unornamented, like a police report; one can sense the influence of Jorge Luis Borges in Bolano's precision and clarity, and also an amalgamation of genre fiction writers of North America, like Phillip K. Dick and James Ellroy. Bolano melds these influences into something all his own, a sort of pan-Latin American voice, without any distinct national identity.

    4 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-04-05

Obviously, with a collection of the top photos from the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, it's got to be good. Many photographers who have been published in the BBC series are lesser-known, and sometimes one-hit-wonders. These images show why it takes more than a camera and a sponsor to create a stunning image. Gone are the static portraits and cluttered landscapes. These images are some of the best efforts from some of the best talents - not just showing nature, but conveying it with feeling.

    5 out of 5 stars exquisite images.......2006-12-17

The images in LIght on Earth are the best of the best from the BBC's annual wildlife photography competition. Anyone can enter the contest, and the images that come out of it are amazing. The editorial staff have a knack for picking emotionally powerful, visually stunning images that weave together like a complex tapestry- to have the best of the images is one place is priceless.
I would also recommend checking out the actual competition, which can be viewed online, to see some of the ones that got away.
