Book Description

Foundations of Tropical Forest Biology presents a timely collection of pioneering work in the study of these diverse and fascinating ecosystems. Modeled on the highly successful Foundations of Ecology, this book consists of facsimiles of papers chosen by world experts in tropical biology as the "classics" in the field. The papers are organized into sections on related topics, each introduced with a discussion of their role in triggering subsequent research. Topics covered include ecological and evolutionary perspectives on the origins of tropical diversity; plant-animal interactions; patterns of species diversity and distribution of arthropods, vertebrates, and plants; forest dynamics and ecosystem ecology; conservation biology; and tropical forest management.

Foundations of Tropical Forest Biology makes essential works in the development of tropical biology available in a convenient form to both senior scholars interested in the roots of their discipline and to students encountering the field for the first time, as well as to everyone concerned with tropical conservation.

Book Description

A showcase for the world's most magnificent birds of prey -- eagles, hawks, falcons, owls, and vultures -- this comprehensive volume offers an exciting glimpse into the world of raptors, their unique adaptations, and their remarkable ability to survive despite growing threats to their environment. Compiled from data collected by the author during more than 30 years of researching, tracking, photographing, and writing about birds of prey, the book provides a complete resource on raptor species as a group, with page after page of captivating images and detailed information that go beyond the usual field guides or scientific publications on the subject. Hendrickson's striking, full-color photographs are accompanied by an illuminating text that draws on the author's personal vignettes and intimate portraits of the various species he has followed and studied over the years, as well as revealing statistics that signal a dangerous decline in many raptor populations. ?Naturalists, birders, photographers, and anyone concerned with the survival of these exceptional creatures will find this a compelling and invaluable volume.

5 out of 5 stars A mixture of great photographs and good information.......2005-12-25

I found this book to be very informative about birds of prey, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a general understanding of birds of prey.

Of the books I've read concerning the subject of raptors, this is one of the better books, especially for those who are just getting started on researching the subject.

This book is written particularly well and give the reader a good, solid knowledge base to work from.

5 out of 5 stars Fly With the Falcons!.......2005-03-26

In addition to the extraordinary photographs in this book, the author is clearly someone who respects the subject matter and life in general. That comes through in the work this author has done with the birds and with a camp.

This book is divided neatly into sections that are reader friendly; readers from the professional falconer to the novice who is interested in the subject will come away vastly enriched. This book is like the birds it covers; noble, strong and beautiful. This is a masterpiece.

3 out of 5 stars Photography is some of the best!.......2003-06-18

Raptors: Birds of Prey, by John Hendrickson contains some of the most stunning pictures of Raptors I have ever seen. Many varieties of birds are presented, and one truly gets a feel for the birds in the wild.

The information presented in the book is rather general and does not match the quality of the photographs. Still, a good introductory book into the study of raptors. I would recommend this book for casual bird watchers or for use as a coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars How Much do you really want to know about Raptors?.......1999-02-18

I am a very good friend of Johns, and not only is he a great author and photographer, He also run an outdoor camp for children to teach them about the earth. What a great man. No matter how much you think you know, John can teach you more. Especially with this book. The more you read and look at it, the more you continue to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Photographs alone worth the price of the book.......1998-02-12

According to the blurb on the book cover, the author's interest in raptors "began at an early age when he started birding with his third-grade teacher" and now the author is founder and director of the Calif. Raptor Education Center.

The photographs are exquisite, starting with the photo on the front cover -- a close-up, eye-to-eye view of a bald eagle.

The book has 4 parts:
1) Gifts of Birth (physical characteristics),
2) Struggle to Survive (migration, etc.),
3) Living in Balance (habitat destruction, accidents, etc.) and
4) the Future (which is more of a discussion of present actions being taken to preserve these birds).

Good for beginners (like me!), although a bibliography would have enhanced this book.

        Book Description

Hawks in the Hand is an American treasure. First published in 1939 when the authors, Frank and John Craighead - pioneers of American conservation - were just nineteen years old, this chronicle of their early adventures in falconry and wild-bird photography was a groundbreaking book that propelled the identical twins to long-lasting international fame as ecologists.

Hawks in the Hand is full of the boundless energy and charming honesty of boys becoming intelligent young men, discovering that the natural world that had been their playground could yield fascinating insights about animal behavior, particularly that of the noble birds of prey. While their discoveries are worthy of any budding scientist, their stories and breathtaking adventures are skillfully rendered and wonderfully entertaining.

These two ingenuous storytellers introduce a cast of unforgettable characters: their friends and partners in adventure - human, canine, and avian - including Comet, the Cooper's hawk, one of their first birds trained to the fist; Bad Boy, the friendly American kestrel; Ulysses, a peregrine falcon; Cactus, the adorable burrowing owl; and Handsome, the osprey, who takes up a surprising friendship with a little skimmer.

In this edition, the first since its original publication, the authors have included dozens of additional photographs as well as excerpts from the log notes that provided the material for their book. Today, Hawks in the Hand is as relevant as ever: an important reminder of how much there is to learn from all wild things and how vital is the connection to the natural world for people of all ages.

        5 out of 5 stars An Inspiration.......2001-03-11

A very inspirational and interesting book. Written from the journals of each of the authors, this book will never let go of your imagination. This book not only makes you want to become a falconer like the Craigheads, but to LIVE falconry like they did. As Stephen Bodio in the introduction puts it: " ...[the book]made me and children like me want to go and do, just just passivley watch."

        A must have.

        HAWKS IN THE HAND

        by John and Frank Craighead

First published in 1939, HAWKS IN THE HAND was one of my favorite books growing up. Reading it (again and again) definitely fueled my passion for birds of prey and inspired my interest in bird photography. It's good to see this fascinating book in print again, now that most copies of the original edition have long since vanished from libraries and used book stores.

Although twin brothers Frank and John Craighead are perhaps most renowned now for their work studying grizzly bears in the Yellowstone region, they began their scientific careers as ornithologists. Indeed, their 1956 book, HAWKS, OWLS, AND WILDLIFE was a seminal work in the fields of raptor ecology, examining in detail the intricate relationship between predatory birds and their prey. But long before they became professional biologists, the Craigheads were studying, photographing, and writing about birds of prey. They were audacious enough, while still in their teens, to submit an article and photographs to NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine-and it was published. The recognition they received from the article led to commissions for more articles and eventually to the publication of HAWKS IN THE HAND.

It is interesting that HAWKS IN THE HAND was reissued in the same year that Kenn Kaufman's KINGBIRD HIGHWAY was published. In some ways, the books have a lot in common. They are both, in a sense, coming of age stories about young Americans who have an overriding passion for birds-a passion that they follow unbridled, crossing and recrossing the continent to study birds. And yet the birding travels that the Craigheads and Kaufman took occurred more than 30 years apart. It was a vastly different world in the 1930s. At that time, a native population of Peregrine Falcons still nested across the East, and the Craigheads visited many of their eyries, photographing the eggs, young, and adults-decades later this would provide vital documentation on numerous traditional falcon eyrie sites that had been lost due to DDT and other environmental contaminants. But all was certainly not well in those times. In a poignant 1933 entry in the boys' journal (which was added to this edition), they described an autumn day spent at Cape May, New Jersey. Unlike most fall days now, few bird watchers were present to witness the spectacular stream of migrating hawks passing over. Instead, scores of hunters stood shoulder to shoulder, shooting at every raptor that passed over. "Shells were piled all over the road and hawks were piled all over the running boards of cars and scattered throughout the woods, for no one bothered getting a hawk that fell anywhere but in the road," they wrote. "It seems a crime that they should be so slaughtered."

The equipment available for rock climbing and photography was also much different from what's available today. You won't see any helmets, carabiners, or fancy synthetic climbing ropes in this book. These guys rappelled down sheer cliff, dizzyingly high above the ground, using ordinary manila ropes to reach falcon nests or climbed massive tree trunks with telephone lineman spurs to reach Bald Eagle or hawk nests. One day some nervous spectators, who were viewing the boys climbing to a Peregrine Falcon nest on a lofty cliff, called an ambulance, which parked below them for the entire time they were there. Frank joked, "To heck with them. If we fall, a broom is what we'll need, not an ambulance." And for all their photography, they used 4x5 press cameras-which are about as heavy, awkward, and unwieldy as you can get-but the pictures they took were great.

When I read this book again recently-for the first time in 25 years-I was amazed how well it held up. I highly recommend it.

                Description:
Two nematode species (Cruznema tripartitum and Acrobeloides bodenheimeri) were selected to test the hypotheses that bacterial-feeding nematodes affect bacterial biomass and activity and that this feedback effect varies with nematode species and population size. For each species, nematodes of three initial population sizes were inoculated onto bacterial colonies in separate microcosms. Nematode population, bacterial biomass and CO"2 production were monitored in parallel microcosm settings. The responses of bacterial biomass to nematode species were different. Bacterial biomass increased significantly on d 8 in the presence of Acrobeloides when its initial numbers were 20 and 100 per microcosm; and bacterial biomass increased significantly on d 4 in the presence of Cruznema when its initial numbers were 5 and 20 per microcosm. Daily CO"2 production of the microcosms with initial population sizes of 5, 20 and 100 Cruznema or of 5 and 100 Acrobeloides was significantly greater than that in microcosms without nematodes. However, the CO"2 production of the microcosms with initial population of 20 Acrobeloides was not significantly different from that of the microcosms without nematodes. The increase in daily CO"2 production per microcosm by Cruznema was generally greater than that by Acrobeloides for the first few days of the experiment. Nevertheless, the increase in daily CO"2 production by an individual nematode was similar for both species and was a decreasing function of the initial nematode numbers. The feedback effect of each nematode species on its bacterial prey was estimated by fitting both bacterial biomass and CO"2 production data to a model. Model outputs demonstrated that the feedback effect of Cruznema on bacteria was greater than that of Acrobeloides during the course of the experiment and the feedback effect of each species was not linearly correlated to initial nematode population sizes. Cruznema increased bacterial biomass and activity by a factor of 3.75-4.55 over the first 4 d, while Acrobeloides increased it by a factor between 1.97 and 3.40.

2 out of 5 stars GPS Coordinates wrong...........2005-07-17

I have never found one of the sites listed in this book. Very upset at the wasted time on sandy bottoms.

                Don't buy.

4 out of 5 stars GPS numbers not accurate, and who uses Loran C anymore?.......2004-08-22

Great overall guide, but sent me on several wild goose chases after SE Florida GPS numbers. Suggest the author/publisher invest in getting these numbers verified, or at least add a notice indicating which GPS numbers have and have not been verified. Also, why bother listing Loran-C numbers. Who uses that anymore?

Hope the 11the edition just out is better, but I'm not buying until I see changes in the bad GPS numbers.

2 out of 5 stars Useless GPS Coordinates.......2003-08-08

Though I am a cavern diver, I have not tried to use this book for this purpose. I have tried to use it for finding dive sites in SE Florida. In this regard, the book is nearly useless. Many (if not most) of the GPS coordinates provided are just plain wrong. Obviously the author is relying on outdated (at best) or totally unreliable third party information. I frankly doubt that the author has ever been to most of the SE Florida open water dive sites written up in this book. This book is a waste of money for open water divers.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good- Wish the GPS numbers were better.......2003-06-28

I bought this book as a way of finding new GPS coordinates in the Tampa area to dive. This book was pretty good, with a great description of each site. However, the GPS coordinates are pretty much run of the mill numbers, you'll find every local charter dive boat and fishing boat there, but not a bad place to start. Where the book starts to fall apart though is when it starts telling you, Place X is 1.7 miles on a 335 course north of point Y. That info. does you no good. When you are looking for a ledge the size of a small car, close doesn't count. Also, it seemed like all the more interesting sites were given in Loran numbers. Anyone who knows GPS knows that you can't accurately convert Loran to GPS, so those numbers are worthless for all but the 3 people in the world still using Loran.
Overall, a great book for people just learning a new area to fish or dive, but expect everyone in that area to have that number. Good book with good info. For those looking for more GPS numbers, try nauticalcharts.com... VERY GOOD MAPS.

If you dive and live in florida YOU MUST OWN THIS BOOK. There is no better diving guide around. Hundreds of sites, most with GPS coordinates. Inside this book you'll find the hidden spots some of the locals don't even know about.

                        Book Description

Two communicate underwater a diver needs one of two things, expensive underwater communication equipment or a creative imagination. Scuba Talk has solved the problem with a system of hand signals to relay the sighting of marine life with speed, ease and accuracy. This book provides a diagram of each hand signal, which is accompanied by a spectacular color photograph, useful facts, plus diving advice for commonly seen aquatic animals in the Florida, Bahamas and Caribbean region.

It's a very cute, compact, spiral bound book with striking photographs. However, I was disappointed with my purchase.

I had anticipated that the book would focus on hand signals to be used as an underwater language for divers.
However, the book focuses primarily on hand signals for the identification of fish.

There are 70+ pages in the book and only two pages are designated for (extremely basic) hand signals for scuba divers.

If you want to communicate the id of a fish to your dive buddy, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to communicating underwater.......2000-11-04

A great book for someone who is new to the diving experience. Great visuals.

                        3 out of 5 stars Basically, it's a kid's book. Use a dive slate!.......1999-07-24

serious divers will likely think this complex system is pretty silly. A slate works really well. But for kids, or for a few basic communiques, the book has some good signals. It would take a good knowledge of the marine creatures before the signals would make sense. It does go far beyond the simple hand signals from your PADI classes. It would be a neat gift to give a Junior Open Water graduate.
