Book Description
Complete in one volume, the five books that created the modern American crime novel
In a few years of extraordinary creative energy, Dashiell Hammett invented the modern American crime novel. In the words of Raymond Chandler, "Hammett gave murder back to the kind of people that commit it for reasons, not just to provide a corpse.... He put these people down on paper as they were, and he made them talk and think in the language they customarily used for these purposes."
The five novels that Hammett published between 1929 and 1934, collected here in one volume, have become part of modern American culture, creating archetypal characters and establishing the ground rules and characteristic tone for a whole tradition of hardboiled writing. Drawing on his own experiences as a Pinkerton detective, Hammett gave a harshly realistic edge to novels that were at the same time infused with a spirit of romantic adventure. His lean and deliberately simplified prose won admiration from such contemporaries as Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, and William Faulkner.
Each novel is distinct in mood and structure. Red Harvest (1929) epitomizes the violence and momentum of his Black Mask stories about the anonymous detective the Continental Op, in a raucous and nightmarish evocation of political corruption and gang warfare in a western mining town. In The Dain Curse (1929) the Op returns in a more melodramatic tale involving jewel theft, drugs, and a religious cult. With The Maltese Falcon (1930) and its protagonist Sam Spade, Hammett achieved his most enduring popular success, a tightly constructed quest story shot through with a sense of disillusionment and the arbitrariness of personal destiny. The Glass Key (1931) is a further exploration of city politics at their most scurrilous. His last novel was The Thin Man (1934), a ruefully comic tale paying homage to the traditional mystery form and featuring Nick and Nora Charles, the sophisticated inebriates who would enjoy a long afterlife in the movies.

The Maltese Falcon.......2006-11-07
An intriguing plot with just the right blend of wry humor, sex and secrets.
Very exciting and convenient.......2006-06-19
I do like these stories, though they are so rough! It is very helpful to be able to have them all together in this one good volume, I think. But it is dangerous to read them late at night, because you either get too excited to sleep, or you dream of bad men with their car headlamps switched off in the dark!
The first benchmark.......2005-08-19
Very nice edition of the master's novels. In addition to my love of Hammett's prose, I am fascinated by the subtle political aspects of his work: he was the first crime writer to question the status quo so frankly. K. C. Constantine said, "The crime writer is society's stoolie", and Hammett is still a reliable informant.
A classic.......2004-08-26
"A Classic"
What makes a classic? In the case of a detective novel, it is a book that can be read and reread and that gives pleasure on each reading. The Maltese Falcon is now seventy-five years old, yet it continues to amaze, to amuse, to engage.
You may know the plot, but you still can't remember every twist and turn of the unfolding story, and you are surprised by details here and there you did not previously notice, or had forgotten. You may know the principal characters-the cynical detective Sam Spade, the seductive adventuress Brigid O'Shaughnessy, the exotic Joel Cairo, the crafty Caspar Gutman. But they are so expertly drawn, so powerfully realized, that you learn more about them on each reading.
You may already have committed some of the most famous lines of dialog to heart ("The cheaper the crook the gaudier the patter"-- "You're good. You're very good. It's chiefly your eyes, I think, and that throb you get into your voice when you say things like `Be generous, Mr. Spade'"). Yet you continue to discover more, and you continue on each reading to relish the bite, the humor, the intelligence of Hammett's prose.
It's practically impossible to read this book without thinking of the motion picture starring Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, and Sydney Greenstreet. Don't try. John Huston's script departs here and there from the story line of the novel, but not in any serious way. Most of the changes are efforts to streamline the story and make it fit the standard (for 1941) length of a screenplay. And the best lines spoken by Bogart, Astor, Lorre, and Greenstreet are pure Hammett. The movie is true to the spirit of the book, and if you are familiar with both you can love them both.
At age seventy-five, The Maltese Falcon is a classic, and there is good reason to believe that in another seventy-five years it will still be one.
Well worth the time........2004-07-28
I have read all five novels at least twice. Will go for three times when winter arrives.

Customer Reviews:
If your eyes can take it, read this book.......2002-01-28
This is the 3rd book I've read on the Maltese breed. Unlike the other 2 books, this one was ALL about Maltese instead of adding general information on puppy training ect. The book gave some more advanced information on grooming, and more impressively featured serious discussions on showing and breeding your Maltese. The only peeve I have with this book is the extreamily small print..my eyes are still burning! I'd recommend picking up a magnifying glass if you buy this book :) On the positive side, there is a lot of info packed into an 80 page book! Happy Reading.
Great Basic Maltese Book.......2001-10-04
This is one of the best Basic Maltese books you can read. It gives clear, consise information that the new Maltese owner can understand. I give one of these books to everyone I sell a puppy to.
Another outstanding dog reference from Barrons........1999-07-31
A comprehensive, no-nonsense approach to the care and keeping of the Maltese. Anyone who knows the breed at all will delight in the information presented by the author, the lovely photos selected by the publisher, and the exquisite illustrations by Michelle Earl-Bridges. An Excellent review of the Maltese standard, with a realistic approach to breeding and puppy care. The history of the breed is a stunning synopsis of the Maltese background. Affordable and informative. "Well done author and publisher!"
Not complete.......1999-02-28
Overall, this book gives you a general idea of owning a Maltese. However it is far from informative. Compared to the books from the same publisher but of different breeds, this book does not contain sufficient information. Some pictures are cute, but some others merely does not reflect the beauty and the elegance of the Maltese breed. A few pictures were so yellowish that it seemed like the Maltese has a yellow coat, which is misleading to owners who are not familiar with the Maltese breed. This book does not contain sufficient information on the topic of breeding and preparation. The author spent over 3 pages just to talk about the history of the Maltese breed. The author gives unrelated info, such as the AKC standard of the Poodle. This book needs to be revised.
Readable and organized resource on Maltese with many photos........1998-08-29
This is an affordable and informative book to recommend for new or prospective Maltese owners. It is very readable and enjoyable with a variety of photos- including conformation shows, field trials and puppies, puppies, puppies. Fulda organizes the book well, starting with a history of the breed and detailing the steps to successfully purchasing and caring for a healthy Maltese true to the breed standard.

Fascinating Mysteries.......2001-03-16
Dashiell Hammett's novels have fascinating mystery plots and the essential elements of film noir: dangerous dames, wise-cracking "ops" (= operative = P.I.), cagey crime orgasnisers, and trigger-happy "muggs".
Hammett's novels include The Maltese Falcon (#3) and The Thin Man(#5), which are great films but they are missing some of the intrigue of the real stories. For instance, there's another angle of Sam Spade involving Iva Archer that doesn't quite make it to the film version . . . .
The Red Harvest (#1) reveals shocking corruption in city politics as the Continental Op (literally) wades through bootleg liquor and tries to keep track of the soaring body count.
The Dain Curse (#2) is a confusing compound of drug use, a religious cult, and a family's vicious criminal record. It isn't a neat, fictionalised detective story, but rather the slough of deceit Hammett must have seen while working for Pinkerton.
The Glass Key (#4) also deals with city-level political corruption, but there's another message: think of trying to use a glass key . . . .
When fortifying myself for a six hour layover and a trans-Atlantic flight, I stumbled upon this book quite by accident, but I couldn't have made a better choice. Hammett's novels make excellent reading: interesting plots, clever wording and some of those "lines" film noir can't do without. I can't resist giving an example "line" (from The Glass Key):
"'A copper found you crawling on all fours up the middle of Colman Street at three in the morning leaving a trail of blood behind you.'
'I think of funny things to do,' Ned Beaumont said."

Best Maltese Book .......2005-03-11
This is, by far, the best book on the lovely Maltese breed that I've ever read. Nicholas Cutillo covers it all. I only wish there was an updated version on the different lines. The chapters on the history and grooming are invaluable. If I could only have one book in my library regarding my beloved breed, it would be this one.
Best Breed/Grooming Advice, Background Info.......2004-06-28
This book devotes more to grooming directions than anything else I've read about the breed (and I've read a LOT!), as well as the different lines (so you'll know if your dog's pedigree includes good dogs). I wholeheartedly agree with the previous reviewers; this is most important book a new Maltese fancier can get, and it should return to print!!
Complete describes it well.......2001-12-25
The book contains 14 chapters 338 pages. Discusses the origins of the breed, who's who in the fancy, the standard, selecting, grooming, showing, breeding.Lots of black and white pictures. I wish these were color.A very good book worth owning. If I got only one book this is the own I would buy.
For Serious Maltese Dog Fanciers.......1999-01-04
This informative book is a must have on the shelves of Maltese breeders, show-people, and others who wish to know all there is to know about these pretty little white dogs! There is much information to be learned from this book, as well as a very comprehensive list of the "who is who" in the Maltese dog world. This book should go back in to print!

Not good for vocabulary........2006-06-13
This book explains the grammar well, but learning the vocabulary is difficult with it. Clearly it is implied that you should learn the words introduced in the grammar, but some of them are not then used in the exercises, so you get no practice with them.
The vowel length is not explained well, the author claims that all vowels are long when followed by one consonant and carry the stress. Yet the book has examples that contradict this rule, like bahar, nefah, wasa', xita. Clearly the length is not predictable from the written form, many words from Arabic are counterexamples to this rule. That is why the Maltese dictionary and phrasebook by Falzon has the pronunciation for every word. But Aquilina's textbook does not.
Also his textbook has no dictionary. But at least it has answers to the exercises.
The author claims Maltese is easier than Arabic, but I doubt it. Maltese has unpredictable comparative of adjectives, the dual is more difficult, there is the assimilation of t, and complex rules for adding object suffixes to verbs.
This book is useful to linguists like me, but not very good for learning the language.
Title And Content Do Not Match.......2006-05-31
I was having hard times rating this book because its title and content do not match at all. This book is called Teach Yourself - A Complete Course for Beginners. Yet this is a typical grammar reference book designed for students of comparative Arabic dialectology as it says in the forword. This book has no dialogs or texts. It only reviews parts of speech and has a total of 31 excerces with kyes in the end. Neither has it a vocabulary.
Exercise 1, for instance, has a list of approximately a dozen of Maltese words and tells you to memorize them and then use the with the definite article. No phrases or sentences. And that's how it goes through the entire book. THIS BOOK IS NOT A MANUAL OF THE MALTESE LANGUAGE, IT IS JUST A REFERENCE GRAMMAR (WITHOUT ANY VOCABULARY) FOR THOSE WHO KNOW SOME ARABIC.
Great for Linguists.......2005-09-22
I greatly enjoyed this book on Maltese. The book was arranged according to grammatical concepts, such as nouns, verbs, etc, which I liked. The book uses linguistic terms to explain the pronunciation of the alphabet, and all throughout: So beware if you are not heavily versed in linguistics. I also took note that this book is more of a reference grammar than a text; there was not much practise after a concept was explained. I recommend this book for anyone interested in an overall thorough review of Maltese.
Needs overhaul.......2005-06-28
This book has not be updated or revised since the first printing in 1965.
It is a good book for linguists or intellectual reference but brutally unintelligble for the beginner. There is no conversational usage at all, just grammar, grammar, and more dry grammar. Granted the language is fairly complex, but a much better job could be done with explaining that complexity (look at Pollard's "Teach Yourself Turkish" for an excellent example of how to succesfully present a complex language with ease and simplicity)
The verbal description is thorough but at the same time fairly useless as most verb examples are given in the third-person singular ("he...") form.
The book could do with an English-Maltese / Maltese-English vocabulary at the back, as words are introduced during text - which is beyond aggrivating to the learner if you're trying to find the meaning of the word "tmintax" and never recall seeing it used before in an earlier excercise.
Sadly, this is probably one of the few decent works on the Maltese language available.
Five stars if you are a descriptive linguist........2005-01-28
My copy of this book was published before 1999 and I do not know whether changes have been made, but the title is misleading. As a student of linguistics for eleven years, I believe that the book was not written for people who want to learn Maltese; it was written for linguists who wish to fit the language into its proper place among other forms of colloquial Arabic. This is the reason for complaints about its terminology. The book is excellent, but the title gives an inaccurate statement of its objective.
For learning to speak Maltese, see "Beginning Maltese," also listed on this site.

Good book for travel with children.......2007-05-30
We used only parts of this book for two full days in SF, and found those parts very helpful. We liked the suggested itineraries and the neighborhood walking tours. Would have liked to see more, and larger scaled, maps of the neighborhoods. Highly recommended.
easy to follow with excellent information.......2007-03-12
We used this book like a San Francisco bible. It had great recomendations that were also enjoyable for the adults. We will keep this one for future trips!
Great book.......2004-05-28
I love this book! I brought my 1 1/2 year old and 4 year old with me on this trip and used this book exclusively. It was very informative. We had a lot of fun! The only thing I would warn you about this book is the recommended places to eat...don't go to them.
This was the first time we took the kids to San Francisco..........2003-08-21
With the use of this guide, we were able to find the inside scoop on all the favorite family attractions, ranging from Fisherman's Wharf, to the Exploratorium, and even the cable cars. The author obviously had children of her own and knew all the hot spots for families. The planning guides, colored maps, and reviews on hotels and restaurants made our first trip memorable!
