Book Description
The most comprehensive pictorial fish ID guide ever published for these waters. More than 270 superb color photos in the popular quick-reference format.
Customer Reviews:
Great ID book.......2006-06-01
This book is great for identifying underwater creatures. There are full color photos and it is organized well for easy use. I would suggest this book for any diver or snorkeler as a great resource.
Fabulous reference for California divers!.......2005-09-28
I wish we had bought this book before our recent dive trip to California. The little fish id cards just don't have as much info and the quality of pictures in this book. As a fan of the Humann id book series, I can say that all of his books are the best on the market and any snorkeler or diver should own them all.
Great Resource for Divers.......2001-08-25
As an avid diver in the Puget Sound, I have found this book to be very useful. It features great photos to help me identify the fishes that I encounter while underwater. The format is easy to use because it is geared toward the underwater naturalist. I recommend it to all my diver friends.
Great Book!.......2000-07-31
As a freediver along the coast north and south from San Francisco, I frequently refer to this book for reference of the fish I find in the kelp beds. I am able to find every fish I saw in the water in this book. The color photos are great for that purpose. Other books in my collection are sometime visually vague due to the lack of photographic images (paintings and/or black & white sketches). In ths book the text along with the pictures are also informational: distinctive features, description, abundance & distribution, habitat & behavior, reaction to divers.

Book Description
Far from being a conservative writer endorsing women's domestic role, Agatha Christie's book depicts women as adventurous, independent women who renegotiate sexual relationships along more equal lines. Women are also allowed the dangerous competency to disrupt society and yet the texts refuse to see them as double deviant because of their femininity. This detailed textual analysis of her oeuvre demonstrates exactly how quietly innovatory Christie was in relation to gender, beginning in nineteen twenty and concluding in the early seventies.

Good information but...........2006-07-10
This book provides some really good information about women who lived in ancient times and does not confine itself to Greek and Roman woman some famous and/or infamous Hebrew ladies are included such as Alexandra and Bernice.
However, the plethora of typos detract from the enjoyment of this book.

Book Description
This is the story of a true hero of WWII, a young woman who risked her life fighting the Nazis during the entire war. She was extensively involved in both sabotage and espionage, and later in the sheltering and movement of allied airmen. She was betrayed, tortured, and when she refused to divulge any information she was sentenced to be hanged; but she was saved by the liberation of Antwerp on September 4th, 1944. For the actions she describes in this book, she was later awarded a certificate of merit by General Eisenhower.
Customer Reviews:
Titled Wrong. .......2006-09-11
"The Quest For Freedom" by Yvonne de Ridder Files. Subtitled: "Belgian Resistance In World War II". (which is the subtitle on my copy of the book).
Fithian Press, Santa Barbara, 1991.
Since retirement as an engineer, I have tried to use my MA in History, leading me to the history of World War II. In my limited experience, there appears to be plenty of books on French Resistance in world War II, with the quantity of books on Polish Resistance being in second place (perhaps). It appears that the number of works on the Resistance in Belgium, Denmark and The Netherlands are few and far between. Therefore, I was happy to see the subtitle, "Belgian Resistance In World War II" on this book. I was disappointed. This book does not address the overall Belgian Resistance, but, rather, is the autobiography of one woman who fought hard and long inside the Belgian Resistance.
Having expressed my disappointment, I would not want to belittle nor denigrate the sufferings and sacrifices of Yvonne de Ridder Files. I know that I could never suffer the way that she did and I thank God that as a little boy in world War II, I never had to make real sacrifices.
This book is actually an autobiography of Yvonne de Ridder Files, written in the first person, tracing her life from the early stages of World War II through her last divorce and her latest marriage to Lt. Colonel Roger Files, (USAF), in 1970. The book is replete with photos of the author at various stages of the War, along with photos of some of the Allied fliers (e.g. Max MacGregor and Louis Rabinowitz, page 77) that she and the Resistance helped. Time wise, the author's story begins with May 1940, when the "Sitzkrieg" again became a "Blitzkrieg", and Belgium and The Netherlands rapidly capitulated. Yvonne records how she and her husband fled from Belgium into France, and, one night parked near two big, seemingly brand-new barns. She was afraid that the barns would be mistaken for aircraft hangars, although she spelt the "hangar" as "hanger"(page 12). . Her 1940 husband was a Jew with American citizenship and he flees to America and quietly disappears from the remainder of the book. Most of the book, from page 25 up to page 145, deals with her Resistance efforts, including the hiding of explosives, the protection of Allied airmen and, finally, betrayal, capture and torture by the Nazis. Yvonne never gave away any secrets. From page 145 to the end of the book (p. 171) the author recounts her post war activities, serving the Allied forces as an interpreter.
I found the writing to be sometimes vindictive here and there, as she describes the actions of her step mother and some of her Belgian neighbors. For a misleading title, one star;
for excellent writing and personal reminisces, five stars; for interesting digs at Nazi propaganda, four stars and, finally, for leaving out too much (where's the first husband?) and putting in too many other details, one star. Average 3.5 stars.
Belgian Heroine.......2001-12-21
Easy to read story of the little known Belgian resistance in ww2. Real life stories can be amazing, and fill you full of envy, delight, fear. However, this book is so understated that although the writer did some courageous and amazing things, risking her life daily, she does not portray this, and leaves the reader dissatisfied. Sometimes modesty is not such a virtue.
An excellent account of Belgian resistance, a must have!.......1999-03-04
This is an easy and well written book and first hand biography by a couragious woman, resistance fighter in Belgium during World War II. I am glad to have found this work and finally have been able to read about the Belgian resistance. The simplicity of the biography is what makes it so interesting. The work is filled with small and valuable details. I wish that other Belgians would have found the courage to publish their wartime experiences. Thank you Yvonne de Ridder

Customer Reviews:
Our Debt to Our Heroes.......2003-08-25
It is frustrating at times to mention the names of men like "Manila John" Basilone or "Silent Lew" Walt in conversation, only to be met with blank stares. Sadly, America all too often forgets her heroes.
The Encyclopedia of American Heroes is an excellent source for rectifying that situation. Author Bruce H. Norton, who has seen the face of battle, has put together a fine book describing the
deeds of men our nation owes a debt of gratitude to.
Clearly written, this book is an ideal gift for young people and adults.
Heroes are not only to be honored from afar, but are examples of courage, loyalty, dedication, honor and leadership, to name a few. This book is a fine resource for learning those lessons.
A "wake-up" call for American youth!.......2002-11-11
There is little doubt that the United States will soon be engaged in a land, sea and air war with Iraq. The current operational information given to us civilians will have a "green light" for action by mid-March. I would hope that anyone giving serious thought to serving in our Armed Forces would take the time to read what it takes, in the form of personal courage to being an infantry-man or Marine.
This encyclopedia is full of the descriptive citations which detail hazardous situations. The thought of having to sacrifice
one's life to save fellow soldiers is vividly described in this fine work.
I would hope that this book is bought and circulated through every high-school library in the USA. It not only describes what it takes to become a "war hero," but it transcends four hundred years of American guts and glory on the battlefield.
There are numerous accounts of individual heroism that literally bring tears to my eyes. The price these men and women have paid is unbelievable.
I, for one, am glad the Major Norton has taken the time to remind us of exactly what it takes to become an American war hero.
I highly recommend this book.
At a Time When We Need to Learn About Heroes!.......2002-10-10
I have just finished re-reading Encyclopedia of American War Heroes, by Major Bruce Norton, USMC, (Ret.), and I must say that I will read it again and again. This book describes the heroic deeds of American men and women in mortal combat from 1600- to present. Some names will not be new, but there are many individuals cited who are not generally known to the American public. This is the kind of book that will be on every American veteran's coffee-table for years to come. While we have been inundated, lately, with images of "heroes" (police and fire-fighters) surrounding the 9/11 trajedy, this work covers 300 years of heroic achievement by our Nation's military. Many of the citations will make the reader pause and think about what it takes to be a "real" hero. The incredible exploits of men such as Chamberlain, Coffman, Day, Fox, Millett, Paige and Williams will bring tears to eyes of any proud American veteran. Major Norton has done a valuable service in creating this marvelous book. I hope that there will be additional volumes to come. A great and valuable book.
A tribute to those that gave all.......2002-09-23
This book should be in every school library. Honoring war heroics doesn't glorify war but pays respect to those who do the most to bring war to a just end. Reading this book is like going to a party and finding all your favorite people are there, you also meet people that you didn't know, but find that you like. And there are a few ladies there too. All the legends are there, there's John Paul Jones, U.S. Grant, Sgt. York, Audie Murphy, Chesty Puller, and Roger H.C. Donlon. There are also plenty of unknown legends, heroes that are known to their peers but not well known to the public. This book includes the stories of highly decorated men like Lloyd "Scooter" Burke, Ola Mize, Lewis Millett and Matt Urban. These men survivied a sustained record of valor beyond the glow of the public's praise. Like any party there are no shows. Any military buff will note ommissions that they feel should be included in this book. Men that I felt should have been included are Tony Herbert, the Korean War's most decorated soldier, and Vietnam's most decorated heroes Robert Howard and Joe Hooper. These tough as nails NCOs gave it all to win and then gave care to their captured enemy. Another no show at this party is Mike Thornton. Mike Thornton is the only enlisted Navy Seal to recieve the Medal of Honor and it is because of him that the Seals can claim to have never left a man behind. No Seal walks taller than Mike Thornton, I suppose. Another no show is Doc Bruce Norton, the only Navy Corpsman to be a team leader of a USMC Force Recon Team. This book is a national treasure.
A "Must Have" for every American Veteran!.......2002-09-12
I have just finished reading Encyclopedia of American War Heroes and I'm very pleased to have bought it. Major Norton has done a great job in presenting a "historic sampling" of many of our Nation's military heroes. With approximately 400 entires and numerous photographs to support the work, this reference book will be a welcomed addition to any military reader's library. The names and faces of many selected heroes are new and interesting. Major Norton has produced a "fair-share" of soldiers, sailors, Marines and Airman. The work covers entries from as early as 1650 through 2001. Additionally, those entries include, female Union/Confederate spies, Native Americans, Mexican-Americans, Hispanics and African-Americans.
While we have been inundated, lately, by media coverage of recent "heroes;" those NYPD, FDNY and Emergency Medical Technicians who were killed on 9/11, this encyclopedia is a refreshing addition and a historical tribute to those brave men and women who dared to do great things on our Nation's battlefields during the last 400 years. These military men and women are the real "role models" that the youth of America should recognize and salute.
I know that this reference book will be well-received, as it should make every veteran proud of his or her military heritage. Another well-written and well-researched book by Major 'Doc' Norton, USMC. Well done!

Book Description
This biographical dictionary covers all who have held this esteemed "office," including current First Lady Laura Bush. An in-depth introductory essay traces the history of the first lady, including changes in the conception of what a president's wife should do and be, and how these perceptions have been affected by changes in society overall. The book also offers intriguing vital statistics, such as presidents who had no wives during their presidencies, wives who devoted themselves to purely domestic duties, and wives who died during their husbands' terms in office.
Arranged chronologically by term of presidency, each biographical entry includes a detailed biography with an emphasis on life during the presidency, a chronology, and suggestions for further reading about that first lady.

Book Description
How cozy are Agatha Christie's novels? They may seem to depict a stable world of respect for tradition, shared culture, settled gender and class roles, political conservatism and unambiguous morality, in which reason suffices to control disorder. But this world is threatened by modernity and uncertainty: war, social mobility, extremist politics, moral liberalization. Prominent citizens may be criminals, detectives are not wholly unlike murderers, social life is largely theatrical, and violence can bring about harmony.
