4 out of 5 stars Swedish Botantist.......2000-02-18

I enjoyed reading about this Swedish botantist who worked out a system for classifying plants. I didn't realize that Linnaeus was also the one who came up with cultured pearls after watching pearl fishermen open several thousand mussels to find one pearl.

Linnaeus organized huge nature walks on Saturdays with as many as 150 people. He was a very popular lecturer at the university. Those who keep travel journals or nature diaries will find its black coat and white waistcoat, its wrinkled forehead and hooked nose and the effect it gives of wearing spectacles, it looks extremely comical when it walks..."

The last chapter provides activities for the budding botantist (no pun intended) like making a flower press and collecting seeds.

5 out of 5 stars The best "local" guide book written for the true hiker!!!.......2006-06-27

I purchased this book in 1996 while moving to attend UNM in New Mexico and learning (by asking) as a fairly new comer where to go and how strenuous the hikes were for a Jersey transplant. While building up my lung capacity on the Sandia Crest hike, I referred to this book over and over again to plan my hikes and really see this beautiful State from the trails. And I still recommend it to those folks traveling to New Mexico for the first or the 10th time. It is the best book written by a local devout hiker and used by local devout hikers. You can not go wrong with this book-it will show your topo maps, truly rate the hikes and give you the details needed to plan, it will be a treasured addition to your library and a good travel companion for beginners and seasoned hikers. Don't forget your water & happy trails, enjoy!!!!

                      4 out of 5 stars Very valuable.......2005-11-12

There are several books available on hiking in New Mexico. This was the one I wound up using the most on a recent trip to the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Others, such as Parent's book, were also useful and I would therefore suggest having a look at all available guides. However, Hill's work includes legible photocopies of USGS topographic maps, and most of the newer hiking guides tend to feature homemade maps which give the user far less information.
In my particular case, the material on trails in and around the Guadalupe Reef was most helpful, as Bill Schneider's recently re-released book on the Guadalupe Mtns and Carlsbad Caverns National Parks doesn't include information on the trails in that part of the Reef in between these two parks, certainly worth visiting for those who are lucky enough to get to this area.
That the book is ten years old is an obvious drawback; things happen, even in a state like New Mexico that has so much public land. For example, a very hot fire had burned up most of the north face of Capitan by Roswell, rendering the trail up the NE side pretty faint. But of course, if you're not willing to ask questions of the locals in this fairly genial state, and do a bit of poking about yourself, you probably don't belong in a place with such rough and potentially lethal geography anyway.

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide!.......2000-08-01

My fiancée and I bought this book before we moved to New Mexico in March of 2000. It has proven to be a fantastic guide and we believe that it's the only book you need to explore the state on foot. Well organized by area with great trail descriptions and maps. A wonderful book!

A well-researched sustainability rating highlights lodgings that are active in protecting an environmental, economic, and cultural balance.

The book offers complete coverage of sights, lodging, dining, and outdoor adventures, including wildlife viewing, parks and reserves, surfing, fishing, horseback riding, and diving. --Kathryn True

                              Book Description

This is the classic guide to Costa Rica that blazed the trail for adventure travel. This guide was not written by a team of "experts" nor by a writer who has 10 different guides to 10 different locations. It is written by two women who have a deep understanding, love and concern for Costa Rica. It offers the insights and hints that only a local can pass along. The best elements of a travel guide, including hotel and restaurant reviews, are combined with ecotourism information. The most popular areas are covered in detail, yet areas of pristine wilderness are not neglected - the book extensively surveys the country's wildlife. Two foldout color maps of the country and capital city, and complete details on outdoor adventures are included. "This book takes absolutely no shortcuts." - San Diego Union-Tribune; "Brings the traveler closer to the local culture." - San Antonio Express-News.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for CR relocators!.......2007-05-14

We have been to CR for a visit and are now considering the BIG move. This book covers every you would need to know and surprises you with information you didn't think of. We have even shared this information with our family that has lived there for 5 years and it has helped them. It also gave a brief but interesting history of Costa Rica as well as current government, economics and culture. Does a good job of explaining the cultural differences which are most important to the person considering a move anywhere! One thing I might stress... the author states several times that English is taught in the schools. This might lead you to believe that you will have little problem with communication. In our trip last year to the Central Valley and the Pacific Coast we did not meet one person that understood us or could speak to us in English. I highly advise, begin you Spanish Lessons before your anticipated trip!

This guide was the better of the two I bought....and the other one was Fodor's. New Key was accurate, impartial, and covered lots of different kinds of stuff....

                              5 out of 5 stars Invaluable - ultra-reliable eco-tourism guide.......2007-03-06

I used this book, and the community-based eco-tourism agency recommended in this book, to plan a two-week trip. I was alone, female, and non-Spanish speaking. I had the time of my life. Everything went off without a hitch. Great people, waterfalls, food, views, and adventures galore. Thanks to the author. None of the other guidebooks came close to the insight and accuracy of this guide.

[...]The 18th edition of New Key to Costa Rica improves upon a veritable classic.

2006 marks the 30th anniversary of the guidebook which guides travelers toward
tasteful family-run lodgings and communities that are actively protecting the rural environment.

Written in a style that feels like a conversation with a travel guide, the New Key provides countless insights about the culture, the environment and the people of Costa Rica.

First authored by Jane Wallace, the book was then updated by her daughter Beatrice Blake and Anne Becher. Beatrice prepared this edition alone, but it is easy to see that the text has been guided by a number of joyful souls.

In 1992 this book was the first guidebook to use a green-rating system. In this edition, the rating system is downplayed in favor of focusing on community efforts.

Focusing on family farm visits allows Blake to show travelers the connections among organic agriculture, appropriate energy technology and diverse ecosystems. She writes: "By visiting these communities, not only will you meet some lovely people, but you will be inspired by their ability to put innovative principles into practice."

For travelers wishing to experience tropical nature, there is no better immersion than visiting the communities that are at the forefront of conservation.

Exciting adventure sports are not omitted. One of the highlights of the book is a review of the country's best canopy tours. Additional "adventure reports" showcase innovative efforts throughout the country.

Among the informative sidebars are capsule reviews of the Talamanca Ecotourism Network, the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center and turtle watching at Ostional Wildlife Refuge.

New Key to Costa Rica covers all the bases - from the practical details of deciding when and where to go to tips on learning Spanish and volunteer vacations. For those seeking an eco trip, this book is a must.

5 out of 5 stars This is it, the real thing.......2006-04-25

Absolutely the best of the four (you can guess the other three) books we took, because this on focuses on the off-beat and the green. Use it to locate the indepth Costa Rica, the one that gets you away from everyone else and makes you feel happy about it.

For more than a decade, locals and outlanders alike have praised Stephen Metzger's New Mexico Handbook as the definitive guide to the Land of Enchantment. This edition provides lively coverage of both familiar haunts and new attractions. Enhanced maps and an expanded table of contents accent the thoroughly updated coverage of food, lodging, and other fundamentals.

Moon Handbooks' New Mexico Guidebook (6th Edition) was the second Moon Handbook that I purchased. The first one I purchased was Nevada by Deke Castleman (also 6th Edition) - which is very helpful and fun to read, by the way. Unfortunately, it was obvious while reading the New Mexico guidebook that the author, Stephen Metzger, does not live in New Mexico, and often seems unfamiliar with the state throughout the book. I really would have liked to have more information about the city of Rio Rancho (only one page for a city of about 66,000 people!). I have traveled to New Mexico twice since purchasing this book and have discovered a lot of beautiful places, good restaurants, and unusual retail establishments that were not mentioned. Although it does have some good information (better than most about New Mexico), this book barely scratches the surface.

4 out of 5 stars Great Single State Guide for History Buffs.......2003-12-17

I recently, for 10 days, drove around New Mexico (5th largest State among the 50), seeking this and experiencing that, and I took with me five guides (Moon's, Fodor's, Off the Beaten Path, Roadside History and N.M. Sanctuaries, Retreats, and Sacred Places). Though Fodor's was the best guide for selecting accommodations and eateries, Moon's guide excelled in historical and tidbit descriptions.

What set this guide apart is the history, superior maps (especially compared to Fodor's) and Stephen Metzger's straightforward, clear, writing style. Metzger's introduction to New Mexico section is outstanding (The Land, Flora and Fauna, History, Economy and the People). This is an important contribution to understanding the State completely skipped by Fodor's. Also, Metzger's history of regions, cities, towns and pueblos is exemplary.

Where the guide falters is the weak descriptions of accommodations and restaurants, IE "The hotel is distinctly decorated" or "a discreet little inn with 12 rooms on an alleyway". After reading Fodor's vivid descriptions this was a serious step back. Also few, if any, website addresses for lodgings are found, and in a 2003 publication that is a serious omission. (Fodor's has website addresses).

If you are primarily interested in finding the best dining experiences and great accommodations Fodor's is my pick. But, for a State guide that is strong on overview and excellent in the history are you can't beat Metzger (however, also check out Roadside History of New Mexico). Strongly Recommended

5 out of 5 stars Slight mistake in one of the reviews.......2002-08-20

As the author of this book, I feel compelled to respond to the reviewer from San Diego (May 29, 2002), who claimed that my Carlsbad research was poor, that I recommended White's City, which the locals call a "laughing stock," and that I failed to mention the Stevens Motel. One needn't look too closely at the book to see that I call White's City a "touristy and gimmicky souvenir stop" and do in fact recommend the Stevens Motel (though under accommodations, not under food). Both of these references are on page 194 of the current edition. Thank you.

4 out of 5 stars Treasure Hunt or Tourist Guide?.......2001-01-13

For the past nine years, my husband and I have driven from Southern California to and sometimes throgh New Mexico to visit his folks for the holidays. This year we had the pleasure of driving through some of the pueblos around Albuquerque. However, for whatever reason, some of the historical landmark signs were illegible. Not to be outdone, we stopped at the Flagstaff, Arizona library to see if there was a guidebook available which would contain this information. After searching the holdings, the very helpful librarian tried Amazon.com and lo and behold, found the first and only book of it type was just published this year. Considering that, as the book points out, people have lived in New Mexico for more than 12,000 years, it is interesting that it has taken this long. This book is a comphrensive listing of over 1700 New Mexican registrar sites made more accessible for the first time. Previously, one had to go to the New Mexico Historic Preservation Division in Santa Fe to obtain this information. It is a remarkable achievement. However, I can't help but compare it to two other state historic place guides which we have enjoyed, CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL LANDMARKS (1990, 11th edition) published by the California Department of Parks and Recreation and ROADSIDE HISTORY OF ARIZONA (1986) by Marshall Trimble which we found in a used bookstore several years ago. Each guide has a slightly different organization. NEW MEXICO'S HISTORIC PLACES divides the state into six regions and then lists the national and state register sites alphabetically by town or city without a map of towns or cities in each county. Although the sites are listed alphabetically in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, that does not seen to be the case for all cities. The editor, Marci Riskin lists nine steps on "How to Use This Guidebook." That about seven steps too many on a road trip. CALIFORNIA HISTORICAL LANDMARKS is organized alphabetically by county preceeded by a map of the cities and highways in that county. Within each county, the landmarks are listed numerically by date of registration. Trimble, on the other hand, divides Arizona into five areas with a map of cities and subheadings according to highways. This format, of course, is the easiest to read on a road trip. So, unless you are very familiar with the geography of New Mexico, make sure you have an OFFICIAL HIGHWAY MAP OF NEW MEXICO issued by the New Mexico State Highway and Transportation Department and the New Mexico Department of Tourism. Perhaps the next edition of NEW MEXICO'S HISTORIC PLACES will be a bit more user friendly, dividing each region by county, with town, city and highway maps, and also providing historic walking tour maps(or where to find them).
