Product Description
While living in northern Illinois and Wisconsin, Carter began to feel the soul of the Earth and the exquisite divinity of Mother Nature. He shares his personal essays, beautifully illustrated by Carolyn Kenney, describing the alienation of humans from the very planet that sustains them. Cabin Fever is a heartfelt wake-up call to reconnect with that which provides the life of all things.

Wildlife essays from Illinois and Wisconsin.......2002-08-02
Chicagoans and other northern Illinois natives have an innate migration instinct: they *must* vacation in Wisconsin. It is the dream devoutly to be wished, and God help anyone who trys to buck border traffic on I-90 and I-94 on a Friday or Sunday afternoon. Carter follows this trend, and even though some of these essays show that his interest in nature begins in Illinois -- with a trip down the Des Plaines River and one through the Skokie Lagoons -- it's the title essay and his experiences with Wisconsin land ownership that are the most personal.
Door County is the armlike peninsula that stretches northeastward into Lake Michigan. It could be considered to be the Cape Cod of the Midwest. Carter was inspired to first visit that part of Wisconsin by the work of landscape architect Jens Jensen. Then Carter himself bought some property there, cleared it a little, and sat in the middle of it on a folding chair. Eventually he decided a homemade cabin would be more practical. In Thoreauvian style, he lets us in on the building process. And he shares his encounters with the animals and plants around him. His words are accompanied by the exquisite pencil drawings of Carolyn Kenney. The pictures alone are worth the price of the volume.
It might be difficult to get hold of this book, but naturalists living in either IL or WI would benefit from owning their own copies. [This reviewer was an Illinois resident when these comments were written.]

Book Description
Plants in the Getty's Central Garden is Jim Duggan's sequel to the book Robert Irwin Getty Garden, Lawrence Weschler's account of the making of the Central Garden at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Designed by contemporary artist Robert Irwin, this "sculpture in the form of a garden aspiring
to be art" draws thousands of visitors each year.
One of the key collaborators who helped Irwin realize his vision, Jim Duggan is, in his own words, a "hands-on gardener." His knowledge and experience were invaluable as Irwin selected the plants that would make up the interwoven "tapestry" of the Central Garden.
This colorful guide brings together informative descriptions of the growing habits and characteristics of nearly four hundred individual plants, with beautiful images by noted garden photographer Becky Cohen. Duggan provides suggestions for cultivating the plants, many of which will be unfamiliar to
gardeners in Southern California. Also included in the book are a foreword by Robert Irwin; three essays by Duggan tracing his involvement with the project; a map of the Central Garden; a plant location guide; and an index of scientific and common names.
Customer Reviews:
great guide to the plants in the garden.......2006-05-15
After visiting the Getty, I had to know more about the plants in that garden. This is a straightforward listing, with pictures, of many of those plants. There is also some information about Robert Irwin's design concepts which I found interesting because I was particularly struck by the color in the garden, which made sense after reading that Irwin is an artist. The only criticism I have of this book is that some of the pictures look nothing like the plants do in real life-- for example some plants that look almost black in the garden are hard to recognize because the small picture doesn't really do them justice. And not all of the plants in the garden are listed here, because they change. Overall though, I found this book very informative and inspiring!

Book Description
For Rebecca Bushnell, English gardening books tell a fascinating tale of the human love for plants and our will to make them do as we wish. These books powerfully evoke the desires of gardeners: they show us gardeners who, like poets, imagine not just what is but what should be. In particular, the earliest English garden books, such as Thomas Hill's The Gardeners Labyrinth or Hugh Platt's Floraes Paradise, mix magical practices with mundane recipes even when the authors insist that they rely completely on their own experience in these matters. Like early modern "books of secrets," early gardening manuals often promise the reader power to alter the essential properties of plants: to make the gillyflower double, to change the lily's hue, or to grow a cherry without a stone.
Green Desire describes the innovative design of the old manuals, examining how writers and printers marketed them as fiction as well as practical advice for aspiring gardeners. Along with this attention to the delights of reading, it analyzes the strange dignity and pleasure of garden labor and the division of men's and women's roles in creating garden art. The book ends by recounting the heated debate over how much people could do to create marvels in their own gardens. For writers and readers alike, these green desires inspired dreams of power and self-improvement, fantasies of beauty achieved without work, and hopes for order in an unpredictable worldnot so different from the dreams of gardeners today.

The contents of this anthology might tempt one to ask: Sylvia Plath in a gardening book? Aren't gardening books supposed to be lightweight affairs? Not so, proclaim editors Charles Dean and Clyde Wachsberger, who have assembled an impressive set of poems and short stories to address what they see as "the profound passions and wild obsessions that motivate gardeners." In Plath's work, "Fable of the Rhododendron Stealers," the poet steals a small bud from a public rose garden. Carrying it home and placing it in water, she hopes to keep it alive a little longer: "I considered the poetry I rescued / from blind air, from complete eclipse." The longing in this poem is part of the book's moody atmosphere--in a powerful story by John Updike, a self-absorbed and fearful narrator sees in leaf shadows "innumerable barbaric suggestions of scimitars, flanged spears, prongs, and menacing helmets." Although it's interspersed with soothing illustrations, obviously this book is no Chicken Soup for the Gardener's Soul. Including poems by Billy Collins and Mark Doty, as well as stories by William Saroyan and Kate Chopin, the one glaring omission is Jamaica Kincaid. Her work would fit perfectly into this collection of writers who see gardens as complex metaphors, or endlessly evocative dreamscapes. --Emily White
Book Description
Winner of the 2002 Garden Writers Association of America's Garden GlobeAward for Illustration. A literary anthology that summons up the profound passions and wild obsessions of gardening. The answers to many gardening questions can be found in how-to manuals and essays, but who can fathom the passions behind the obsession? Why do we get down on our hands and knees in the mud in March or return to the garden for one last look before dark? Only the storytellers and poets can tell us. The twelve short stories and twelve poems collected here celebrate the irresistible emotions that plants inspire. A beautiful flower arouses the desire to possess in "The Lily" by H. E. Bates and "The Fable of the Rhododendron Stealers" by Sylvia Plath. In William Saroyan's "The Pomegranate Trees" a man plants fruit trees from his native Armenia and then goes to extremes to keep them alive in the California desert. Robert Graves's humorous story, "Earth to Earth," is set during the Second World War and reveals the secret ingredient in uniquely potent compost; and in Billy Collins's "Bonsai" a miniature tree changes our perspective on the whole world. Also included are Mary Austin, Kate Chopin, Amy Clampitt, Eugenia Collier, Mark Doty, Robert Frost, O. Henry, Josephine Jacobsen, Sarah Orne Jewett, Howard Nemerov, Kathleen Raine, Christopher Reid, Saki, James Schuyler, John Updike, Arturo Vivante, Alice Walker, William Carlos Williams, and Cynthia Zarin. Twelve elegant black-and-white sumi paintings of plants by Clyde Wachsberger enhance the collection. There is no better way to cultivate a gardener's passions during the long winter months than through this beautiful and moving book. 12 black and white illustrations, preface, biographical notes.
Customer Reviews:
Classy collection of essays and poems...........2001-12-16
I'd hardly call this book of essays and poems soothing. Some of these folks are mighty disturbed. I don't think John Updike ever wrote anything I could call delightful--provocative, beautiful--but not delightful. And true to form, his essay is about the aftermath of a decision to divorce and his "farewell" to some leaves he's become intimately involved with via his study window is both beautiful and sad. Sylvia Plath scares the heck out of me and her essay "Fable of the Rhododendron Stealers" is a signature piece. Then we have Alice Walker's poem "Revolutionary Petunias" about a backwoods woman who raised a George, a Martha, a Jackie and a Kennedy, and Josephine Jacobson's "Jack Frost" is a bit nippy. Robert Graves (I, Claudius and The White Goddess) addresses the behaviour of avid composters in "Earth to Earth".
No, this book is definitely not restful, but, it's really, really good. If you're a fan of the short story, particularly those with a twist you will like this book (including the O'Henry tale, "The Last Leaf"). If you're a fan of good poetry (Billy Collins anyone) you'll like this book. LEAF AND FLOWER is not about gardening per se, though gardeners like the old woman who attempts to bring beauty into sordid surroundings in Eugenia Collier's "Marigolds" are sometimes featured.
If I had to assign an organizing principle to this work, I would say this...every human life intersects with a plant at some critical juncture. OF LEAF AND FLOWER contains one of the most artistically assembled sets of essays and poems on the importance of flora for human beings.
AN UPLIFT TO THE SPIRIT.......2001-10-14
WHAT A WONDERFUL COLLECTION OF STORIES TO UPLIFT YOUR SPIRITS IN THESE DISTURBING AND TERRIBLE TIMES. WHETHER YOU ARE A GARDENER OR NOT THESE STORIES ARE A DELIGHTFUL WAY TO LOOSE YOURSELF FOR A FEW HOURS. WOULD MAKE A GREAT CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR THE GARDENERS IN YOUR LIFE - THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND VERY SUBTLE.
ALL IN ALL A 1ST RATE COLLECTION AND A JOY TO READ AND A NICE BOOK TO HAVE AROUND TO PICK UP FROM TIME TO TIME AND REREAD.

Customer Reviews:
Handy, Compact and Fun!.......2007-07-16
My husband and I used this travel sized book for our first trip to Bermuda and found it very useful! It seems to be difficult to find any travel book or publication that has every detail completely acurate and perfect due to how quickly some things change. We travel quite oftena nd to various locations and found this one to be as reliable as any Auto Club or other Fodor's publication. SInce it can be very frustrating to plan an activity based on a travel book and then find it unavailable, we've found that a good rule of thumb is to always, always phone ahead to make sure of availability.
INACCURATE, OUTDATED, and FULL OF WILD-GOOSE CHASES.......2002-06-09
This book is composed of listings from businesses who have CLEARLY paid off Fodor's editors. Every single establishment that it recommended was described inacurrately, in an obvious attempt to make restaurants and hotels sound better than they are. This book RUINED our vacation, because I was stupid enough to trust it. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water, Gettysburg, Ben Franklin's inventions, the Liberty Bell -- there is so much to learn about Pennsylvania's history and geography. K is for Keystone is a wonderful introduction to many of Pennsylvania's unique features for readers young and old.
"E is for Easton
A town where you can see,
The birthplace of crayons and markers,
In the Crayola© FACTORY."
"The word Crayola© comes from the French word craie (chalk) and the first part of the word oleaginous (an oily paraffin wax). In 1903 cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith created an overnight success with their Crayola© crayons made for school use. Seventy-five years later Crayola© markers were produced. The Crayola© FACTORY in Easton, Pennsylvania, includes a hands-on discovery center and offers demonstrations that show how crayons and markers are made."

Book Description
The first family guide to the Poconos details hundreds of things to do with kids. Covers entertainment, lodging, outdoor activities, sports, festivals and celebrations. Includes websites, coded for wheelchair and stroller access plus birthday party facilities. A must for families who travel as well as those who live there.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book for People of All Ages.......2000-02-18
I visited the Poconos with my parents as a youngster and continue to do so with my family because we enjoy all of the activities this area offers to everyone regardless of age. The book "Discover the Poconos with Kids" contains a wealth of information which prior to its publication was not available to families. It provides excellent concise and informative articles on activities for the young and old. In fact, I just took my family to the Poconos in January as my older granddaughter wanted to learn how to ski. Before taking the trip I reviewed the book to up date my knowledge on the various ski resorts and other points of interest for my younger granddaughter. I highly recommend this book to anyone planning a trip to the Poconos whether it be in the winter, spring, summer or fall as the book details family activities for all seasons.
Great For Grandparents On The Go.......2000-02-06
Now retired, my husband and I enjoy day trips with our four grandchildren or two great-grandchildren. One of our fondest destinations is the Pocono Mountains. Ms. Strunk's book was a hot birthday gift last summer, and we've all reaped the benefits of its wealth of information during our many treks during numerous seasons. Thank you, Ms. Strunk, for making our visit so easy! This book is a wonderful compilation of the multitude of activities available for children of all ages - even Clair and I as we approach our late 70s! Our younger counterparts seem to enjoy our every adventure to any of the quaint and friendly communities in the Poconos, specifically when we can plan our trip as we drive out there. Over these past months, we've developed some favorite stops, thanks to this book, but we're always prepared to try something new that will make our journey memorable. Ms. Strunk's hard work makes our visits easy and fun. Thus far, the information she's provided us with has been invaluable and right on the money. We purchased copies of this book as Christmas gifts this year for some of our friends and each of our children's families. We're hoping they will find the same delight amid the pages of this great guide.
A Waste of Paper.......2000-01-09
I purchased the book because I live about 1 1/2 hours from the Poconos, and I am always looking for activities with two active outdoor type boys. I expected to recieve a book with information and ideas beyond the basic brochure rack and highway sign type information. What I received was not even as good as a large pile of brochures. It was simply a list of the different attractions in the Poconos with bare bones descriptions. There were no ratings, opinions, or commentaries of any kind regarding the places and activities. This book is not a "Guide" to the Poconos, it is a "List" of the Poconos.
If you were expecting anything that resembles a travel book, such as Lonley Planet or Fodor's, which helps you decide what to do, not just list the names and addresses of attractions, keep looking (I know I still am).
