Book Description

In the early 1970s, two idealistic young people—Gwen Carpenter Roland and Calvin Voisin—decided to leave civilization and re-create the vanished simple life of their great-grandparents in the heart of Louisiana's million-acre Atchafalaya River Basin Swamp. Armed with a box of crayons and a book called How to Build Your Home in the Woods, they drew up plans to recycle a slave-built structure into a houseboat. Without power tools or building experience they constructed a floating dwelling complete with a brick fireplace. Towed deep into the sleepy waters of Bloody Bayou, it was their home for eight years. This is the tale of the not-so-simple life they made together—days spent fishing, trading, making wine, growing food, and growing up—told by Gwen with grace, economy, and eloquence.

Not long after they took up swamp living, Gwen and Calvin met a young photographer named C. C. Lockwood, who shared their "back to the earth" values. His photographs of the couple going about their daily routine were published in National Geographic magazine, bringing them unexpected fame. More than a quarter of a century later, after Gwen and Calvin had long since parted, one of Lockwood's photos of them appeared in a National Geographic collector's edition entitled 100 Best Pictures Unpublished—and kindled the interest of a new generation. That photo and many others by Lockwood are included here.

With quiet wisdom, Gwen recounts her eight-year voyage of discovery—about swamp life, wildlife, and herself. A keen observer of both the natural world and the ways of human beings, she transports readers to an unfamiliar and exotic place, preserving her great adventure for those who did not make the trip in person.

"I [would write] in the stern of our red and green bateau while Calvin was running nets or lines from the bow. Since ink smears when it gets wet, I used pencils on a yellow legal pad propped against the black Mercury outboard motor. Whenever it was time for me to crank the motor and run us to the next line or net, I'd sit on the pad to keep it from blowing away. . . . During the writing process, we carried on our regular conversations. The stories are almost extensions of those conversations, rising and falling with our voices, capturing the essence of our daily lives like our elderberry wine captured the fragrance of April to be released again in October."—from the prologue

AUTHOR BIO: Gwen Roland is a writer and editor for the Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program at the University of Georgia in Griffin. She is at work on a novel set one hundred years ago in the Atchafalaya Basin.

5 out of 5 stars Loving it!.......2007-08-15

Having lived in Louisiana all my life, this book caught my attention last summer when it was first released. I had wanted to read it on the beach during a family vacation, but after many failed attempts to find it in a Florida Bookstore, I had to give up. So this year it was the first book I thought of when our August beach trip was scheduled for Destin, and this time I found it at the local library. The book has captivated me and makes me think of time spent canoeing the Atchafayala swamp & staying overnight at Betty's Trapper Cabins with aligators at the doorstep. Gwen Roland's writing style envelopes you and pulls you in further with each chapter. You can't help but want to visit the places and meet the people (except most have passed on to the great swamp in the heavens). I now want to see the lpb documentary by Bill Rodman, where he interviews Calvin Voisin & CC Lockwood. And go to CC Lockwoods upcoming book signing. Wow, this book has opened up the floodgates to experiencing more of the mysteries of the Atchafayala. I don't read novels much anymore, and the last book that grabbed me like this one does is about another couple who left NYCity to live on a farm in Novia Scotia. I can see some simularities in these folks fiercely independent spirits. If you liked this book check out :It All Began with Daisy

5 out of 5 stars A new favorite!.......2007-07-31

I absolutely loved this book. I found it in a quaint little book shop in Zebulon, Ga close to Gwen Roland's current home.

It is now on our "library bookshelf" at our lakehouse because I want everyone I know to read it.

The language is glowing, the story beautiful and serene. I was a little disappointed to read that she is currently working on a novel. I wish she would write more non fiction. Surely she has so much more to tell about such a rich life!

4 out of 5 stars Down home goodness :).......2007-05-30

This is a sweet book that will have you longing for a simpler life. A quick, easy read full of colorful language and a peaceful tone. I wanted to run away to the Louisiana Swamp after reading this! Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2006-06-14

It's hard to go wrong with this subject matter, and I would recommend this book wholeheartedly.

But that said, I was a little disappointed in the book, not for what was in it, but for how much more she could have told us. The author has had a rare experience -- who else do you know who has lived on a houseboat in a swamp, without electricity or most modern conveniences, for a decade? Yet I was left feeling that she only related the bare minimum about her years in the swamp. Part of the problem is that the first half of the book appears to contain only her previously-published articles about her life at that time from a small regional magazine, and they are short and lacking a lot of detail. I'm left thinking how much better this book could have been if she had gone back and fleshed those out, adding more information and context. She doesn't discuss how it felt to adjust to such a rustic life, her relationship with the man she shared this life with, or any problems that they encountered, other than their dislike of returning to civilization for supplies every so often. In other words, she doesn't inject much of herself into her descriptions -- her feelings, her hopes or fears.

The second part of the book talks about temporarily working as a cook on a river boat, meeting the man she would later leave Calvin for, and her life since she left the swamp. In many ways, this is the more descriptive part of the book, especially as she details honestly the boredom of riverboat life and the pain of falling in love with another man. I was left imagining what could have been if she had applied the same descriptive style and writing technique to the earlier part of her work.

Again, I am glad I bought this book, but if the author had spent the time beefing up her earlier articles in the first part of the book, when the subject material is far more unusual, I would have given this book a higher rating. There aren't many people who have lived a life like hers, and it's a shame that it isn't more thoroughly described during her swamp years.

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible and bittersweet........2006-05-17

Beautiful, sweet and simple. The topic isn't one I have particular interest in, but the way she writes you can't help but fall in love with her, with Calvin, and with the whole life they create. I read it one night. Definitely recommended for anyone who has ever daydreamed about a quieter life than the one they lead.

        Book Description

From microscopic organisms on tidal rocks to dense marine forests, seaweeds vary widely in size and are amazingly well adapted to both the Arctic and the tropics. David Thomas presents a detailed look at what seaweeds are, how they live, and why humans value them. Seaweeds offer a rich variety of habitats for animals and serve as important food sources. Thomas describes the red, brown, and green classifications that encompass over ten thousand species and emphasizes that seaweeds can be understood as dynamic canopies only by visualizing them under water. He explains how seaweeds get all of their nutrients from the surrounding water, needing roots only to anchor to the sea floor, and how some species use "anti-grazing" strategies to discourage fish by releasing swift doses of unappetizing acids. The economic value of seaweed is astounding. Some species are harvested for $1 billion annually, and seaweed constitutes up to 10 percent of the average diet in Japan. The search continues for compounds in seaweed that may be beneficial as new drugs, antibiotics, and cancer treatments. Not only is seaweed vital to coastal ecosystems, but it is also an important part of everyday life.

                          Book Description

The twentieth century has given us that male phenomenon who, with the wink of an eye and the flash of a gleaming smile, can send whole populations into near-hysteria--the heartthrob. Over the last hundred years the male ideal has shifted through myriad categories, and readers will find them all here in this dazzling array of heart-stopping faces, from Robert Mitchum and Robert Redford to Matt Damon and Leonardo di Caprio.

This lavish photographic celebration is the result of years of combing the finest archives for the best images, many of which have rarely been seen. Personal recollections, written especially for the book by some of the beset-known figures in fashion, film, photography, and literature--including Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Tyson Beckford, Isaac Mizrahi, Geoffrey Beene, Gloria Steinem, Helen Gurley Brown, Nancy Friday, Eileen Ford, and Herb Ritts--explore the allure of the mediagenic male as he has evolved over time.

i thought the pictures of some of the most handsome cutie-pies of the entertainment world were wonderful. i even loved the large colored photo of guy madison in it! gosh, what a great looking man he was!! i wished i was a grown woman back then. i would have dated him in a heart beat! ha! ha! van johnson, robert walker, and woody harrelson pictures were a delight also. this book is a must have for any woman who loves looking at men a lot or "men watcher's". ha!

1 out of 5 stars Picture book without commentary.......2003-04-26

A picture book of 200-odd beautiful male celebrities, mostly movie stars, from the days of Valentino to the days of Leonardo DiCaprio. Most are "glamour" shots, face and torso, with only very occasionally a shirt unbuttoned or removed. Some curious omissions, and some extremely curious inclusions, but I guess beauty is a matter of personal taste.

However, the commentary is terrible. No discussion of the social and cultural trends that impacted concepts of male beauty, just insipid rantings and quotes with no citation. And Reuters is oddly homophobic. Over and over, he tells us about "armies of female fans (and I'm sure a few male)" and "eyes that made women (and a few men) melt." Why are the male fans dismissed over and over in tentative asides in a book marketed specifically to them? How about "armies of male and female fans" and "eyes that made men and women melt?"

It also seems very curious that the biography paragraphs (in such small print that you need a magnifying glass to read them) closet every gay star except Sal Mineo -- even Liberace is merely the subject of "rumors." Does Reuters believe that we won't buy the book if we discover that Liberace, Troy Donahue, Rock Hudson, Ramon Novarro, et al. were gay?

                          2 out of 5 stars Sorely disappointed.......2002-03-27

The gorgeous Guy Madison on the cover was the sole reason for my purchase of this book on this website. Photos of this actor seem to be very rare, especially from here in Singapore and I'd been thinking about buying this book for the longest time, hoping to see more of Guy. The only thing that made me hesitate was that I had recalled flipping through it once before when I saw it in a bookshop in New York last year and decided against buying it, although I had forgotten exactly why.

When I received the book a few weeks ago after I'd ordered it, I remembered why I didn't buy it... This book, to me, is an inconsistent and insubstantial collection of photos of the men of Hollywood. Admittedly, there are some very interesting and rare photos and portraits, particularly from the 30's to the 70's, but that took up perhaps only 50 percent of the content. The other half was mostly filled with out-of-focus (Richard Chamberlain in mid-stride - I'm sure there are sexier pictures than this one), common (Leonardo DeCaprio in a tux at some awards dinner - how common is that), fanzine pictures that were sadly & disappointingly included. In his introduction, Donald Reuter mentioned that it was difficult to include too many pictures in this book because "... it would either be twice as big (and expensive), or the pictures would have to be the size of postage stamps..." But, looking at the (poor) layout, it seems that there could have been so many more photos that could have been added; for instance, only 2 pictures illustrated the "Golden Boy" section! It is also surprising that Donald Reuter, whose resume includes being creative director, illustrator and designer, can produce such an amateurishly designed book (for all who are short sighted, the captions are TINY-- probably 2 or 3 point text!!)

This book could have been a wonderful tribute to the men of Hollywood, but it is lacking in so many aspects... and there were only 2 pictures of Guy Madison - including the one on the cover!

4 out of 5 stars Some Very Beautiful Men.......2000-08-03

On the plus side, this book has photos of all of the beautiful men in show business and even a few outside of show business. Thus, everyone will find some picture they love. Mine is a shot of Gregory Peck, which I had never seen before, in "To Kill A Mockingbird", in which he is absolutely beautiful. I've seen this movie several times and this shot is not in the movie. It must have been a still. On the negative side, however, unlike most photography books, there is nothing cohesive or uniting about this book other than a huge range of men who were or are heartthrobs. This is especially true since all different photographers took the pictures throughout much of the twentieth century. If you are looking for a specific heartthrob, the odds vary on how well you'll do because there is only one shot per person. I could have used fewer men with more portraits of those few but, of course, I'd want to pick who the fewer men were!

4 out of 5 stars A great book on the Greats!.......2000-03-27

This was a very nice book, and absolutely worth having. I wish the writer included more text. This is particularly so regarding Guy Madison (the cover) whose face, I am sure, sold most of the books before they were even opened. The writer could have mentioned the official Guy Madison Web Site and the web sites for the other subjects in his beautiful book if he wanted to limit text to that extent. In any case, this book is a must for those who love movie culture.

                          Book Description

From the earliest daguerreotypes and cartes de visite to captivating portraits from photographers on the forefront of today's art scene, the images in The Dog: 100 Years of Classic Photography are as stunning as the dogs are endearing. Just as dog lovers have long been aware that man's best friend is among the most naturally photogenic of subjects, contemporary greats such as Keith Carter and Sally Mann have also picked up on the undeniable chemistry that exists between canines and the camera. But in The Dog: 100 Years of Classic Photography from the editor of the landmark The Dog Observed, it's apparent that the masters from the earlier part of the century were also well-acquainted with the dog-as-subject genre. In Robert Capa's Rome (1943) a young soldier gingerly places a small puppy in his combat helmet. Protection, loyalty, camaraderie—all themes associated with war are evoked in a single photograph of a boy and a dog. Likewise, Robert Doisneau brings to light a Paris that is at once familiar without being trite, simply by photographing a dog looking into the camera while his master turns away on the Pont des Arts. Each photograph in this remarkable collection reflects a unique moment in time, and the sometimes surprising, occasionally humorous, always intimate relationship people have with their dogs. Whether it's the fine art photography buff or the most dedicated of dog lovers, The Dog: 100 Years of Classic Photography is guaranteed to set more than just a few tails wagging.

First published in 1986 to wide critical accalaim, The Sexual Perspective broke new ground by bringing together and discussing the painting, sculpture and photography of artist who were lesbian/gay/queer/bisexual. The lavishingly and seductively illustrated new edition examines the increased lesbian visibility within the visual arts as well as artists' responses to the AIDS epidemic. Emmanuel Cooper places the art in its artistic, social and legal contexts, making it an impressively vital contribution to current debates about art, gender, identity and sexuality.

If you're ever going to buy a book just for the pictures, look no further. Not only does "The Sexual Perspective" provide an open and thorough history of homoerotic art of the last few centuries, but it continues to fascinate the reader with alternative views of conventional and popular art. As for the pictures, it's certainly not porn, but I'd advise you to keep it on the top shelf of the bookcase. This is not for grade-school eyes. As far as textbook-style reads go, it's definitely a keeper.

I've been a fan of National Geographic since I was just a little boy, the captivating photographs and well written articles of The National Geographic Society have never ceased to amaze me.
When I bought this book a week ago, I was reluctant to believe that I had made a wise decision in buying it. But after it arrived in the mail and I saw those wonderful photographs and read the articles of this book, I realized just how wrong I had been! I usually dont buy the newer publications of National Geographic due to the decline in the quality of the articles over the years. These days, the articles published in the pages of National Geographic magazine are sub-par when compared to the articles of the 80's & 90's. What ever happened to the writers whos articles inspired me to become a Journalist? Anyway, I was worried that this book would be lacking in the quality of it's articles, but I was glad to discover that I was wrong! This is one of the best National Geographic books that I have ever read! It contains some of the best writing that I've ever seen, not to mention the breath-taking photography that has always made National Geographic such an icon among books and magazines!
If you're a fan of National Geographic, then I highly recommend adding this book to your collection!
And if you're a fan of fine photography then I highly recommend buying this book! It's packed full of more than 400 full color and black & white photographs!
And at the price that they're selling it for, they're practically giving it away! Buy it now, you wont be disappointed!

For those of us unable to travel to such exotic locations or live during the time periods profiled, this monumental book offers such an opportunity.

                            Book Description

100 YEARS OF HARLEY-DAVIDSON ADVERTISING takes the reader through a century of the premier motorcycle company's witty and eye-catching print advertisements. The colorful and sometimes provocative ads reflect the creative spirit and the unique culture of Harley-Davidson--and America--over the last century. The book revisits famous campaigns, laid out decade by decade, from the "Gee Dad! Buy me a Harley-Davidson" campaign of the 1920s to "I Am Woman. Hear Me Roar" in the '80s, showing how Harley-Davidson has remained in tune with the times--and often ahead of its time. The perfect companion to Willie G. Davidson's 100 Years of Harley-Davidson, this book will become an instant collector's item.

                              Book Description

London of One Hundred Years Ago gives a vivid insight into the life of the metropolis in the late Victorian and Edwardian era. A fascinating selection of early photographs and other illustrations, combined with memorable quotations from the writing of the day, recall a lost generation of Londoners and their great city. The book recaptures the spirit of a past age. The London that had so hugely expanded during the nineteenth century excited a wide range of intense responses. Its sheer size and variety, and its extremes of grandeur and ugliness, poverty and extraordinary wealth, provoked astonished reactions from visitors and provided an inexhaustible topic for writers who knew the capital well. Their accounts recall the stink and congestion of the streets, the sprawl of new building, the burgeoning population, the masses of commuters and shoppers, the undercurrents of disorder and crime, and the sometimes worthy attempts made by the city's governors and benefactors to improve social conditions and to enhance the appearance of the principal capital of the British Empire.

The fine selection of illustrations that have been brought together for this book record the startling contrasts of the time. The pictures show royalty and the aristocracy, the professionals and the growing middle class, the office-workers and street-sellers and the vast working population. They also offer an unforgettable glimpse of trends in fashion and entertainment, and recall changing modes of transport and types of work at the beginning of the twentieth century. The accompanying text reveals, too, the attitudes, opinions and habits of Londoners and brings their ordinary concerns and activities back to life.

London of One Hundred Years Ago will appeal to everyone who is keen to learn more about the city's history and about England in an age which now seems so remote. The book creates a powerful impression of this period of unprecedented developments, but it also illustrates the strength of an underlying culture that has resisted change and is recognizable today.

3 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent introduction to American history.......1999-03-07

George Sullivan brings together some striking images in this well thought out book. There is a wealth of information here about the last century of American history, supported by photographs of everything from sporting events to politicians. I found this book informative and easy to read. It did not concentrate on any one aspect of American history, but instead presented a balanced overview of many topics. As an amateur photographer I found the format very pleasing. The photographs tell the story well, and help to make it a book that is ideal both for adults and schoolchildren alike. It is an excellent introduction to American history.
