4 out of 5 stars Great Historical/ Environmental Read.......2007-03-21

Ages 10+
Follows the life of a river from Native American time through present and details the story of human destruction of a river and the human renewal of the resource. Definitely a read for grades 5+ due to the "urgency" of environmental destruction*we don't want to scare the kids to help them appreciate the resource*

5 out of 5 stars This book is fantastic for third graders!.......1998-08-23

I used this book with my third grade class when they were studying the effects of water pollution on a large body of water. They had already studied Native Americans in second grade and this book just blended the two subjects together. The step by step portrayal of man's harm to the Nashua River helped my children learn about how they were harming the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Lynne Cherry is a fantastic author and presents two great subjects that are highly interesting to children. Any teacher that teaches either Native Americans or water pollution should include this book in their lessons!

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the greatest books ever written........1997-12-24

This book was given to me at age 12. I am now 17 and it is still my favorite. I will never outgrow the beautiful pictures, or the very important lesson it teaches. Every page is expertly laid out, with exquisite paintings depicting the river and the era being discussed. The message of environmental conservation and protection is inspiring. Lynne Cherry makes this vital part of our existence understandable to young children, and even adults, often the harder group to reach. I highly reccommend this book for anyone who wants their children to appreciate the world around them and learn that they can, and should, do their best to save it.

5 out of 5 stars Scenic AND educational!.......1997-03-16

This is a beautiful book! The illustrations are breathtaking and it follows an almost "illuminated" type of text structure, similar to that found in "The Mitten" by Jan Brett. Each page is bordered by illustrations of items pertaining to the period in history that the page is depicting - the implements used by Native peoples, animals that live by the river, inventions of the Industrial Revolution, etc. There is much more to talk about on each page than just the environmental theme of the book. This book would fit well in units about Native people, progress/inventions, ecology, water habitats, etc. A must-have for classrooms, homes, and teachers

5 out of 5 stars A Field Guide to Western Wildflowers.......2005-06-12

Personally, I think the Peterson Guides are far more helpful than the Audobon publications. As mentioned in other reviews, Peterson uses illustrations organized by color and flower configuration. The illustrations are very well done. Audobon uses photos. The idea is that you match your specimen to the photo it most closely matches and follow further identification from there. The books are complimetary and work well together; however, if you can only choose one-- get the Peterson book. Overall, I have had much better success keying out plants with Peterson and repeatedly have found the plant I am looking for overlooked in the Audobon text. The truth be known, I doubt I will ever buy a Audobon plant book again-- perhaps they are better with birds.

5 out of 5 stars Pacific States Wildflowers........2001-06-22

I like the book and the topic, however the binding is is such bad shape that the book is useless in the field or for a more robust usage. Can this be fixed?

4 out of 5 stars A Useful Tool.......2000-04-04

Though this title may be a little pricy, it is a must have for residents of California, Oregon, and Washington. At any rate, any family within which there is a flower collecter, should have a copy of this excellent resource. Though my family originally purchased this title because of a biology project assigned to my daughter, it has since opened up an interesting world of the natural plant life of this area and even those farther away.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Field Guide to help identify Wildflowers.......1999-07-06

I take this guide (and the Audobon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers-- west) on all my field trips to identify wildflowers. Though Peterson has fewer real photos, it does have better aids to identify specific wildflowers, as it is organized by color, as well as number and types of petals. The sketches help me do a preliminary id on the wildflower.

Book Description

In pursuit of their animal subjects, artists Olly & Suzi start by situating themselves in the subject's natural habitat--the wild. They approach as closely as possible and, working in tandem, quickly capture their prey on paper, using the day's particular combination of paints, brushes, burnt sticks, natural pigments, even blood, and then offer up the finished portrait to be paw-printed, tooth-bitten, or otherwise marked by the animal for authentication. Their collaborators have included anacondas, crocodiles, polar bears, and great white sharks. Of course, occasionally a leopard decides to rip apart its own image, or a rhino devours the canvas whole. While their art yields paintings of extraordinary beauty and power, Olly & Suzi consider it performance-based and site-specific: sometimes the only thing they come away with from an expedition is their lives.

Spare, vibrant, and lyrical, the works that have survived Olly & Suzi's 15 years of adventures in such remote locales as Siberia, the North Pole, and the Galapagos Islands fill the pages of this equally boundary-defying book. Accompanied by dazzling photographs that document the pair's unique process, these paintings take the reader on a dynamic journey to the world's remaining, though endangered, wild places.

TO DISCOVER immediatly... once you open this book, it is an absolute NECESSITY to keep on look to it... i loooooooooove them !

5 out of 5 stars Olly and Suzi: Awesome, Display, Of, Jenius!.......2004-04-20

thank goodness we don't all listen to reviews like that below.... this book is anything BUT pretentious twaddle!
how can i describe it?.... it gives you so much - amazing photography, beautiful art, fascinating stories - and leaves you feeling positively up-lifted, excited by the world we live in and inspired to travel and take an interest in activities such as conservation.
olly and suzi are true artists, clearly passionate about the subject of their work. the work itself displays raw talent, honesty and beauty. couple this with the other wonderful elements of this book and you have a truly awesome document that i defy anyone not to appreciate.

2 out of 5 stars pretentious twaddle.......2004-03-12

art is always subjective and individual views such as my own should only be taken in this context but these two pair of chancers really seem to take the biscuit.

forget your damien hursts this self promoting pair and their various hangers-on just seem to continue to exist in the ongoing absence of any real interest in their work.

for completists/students only i would suggest this book, a collection of childike daubings seems to me like emptiness masquarading as 'art' by a couple of pretty talentless pretentious students with travelust and a penchant for the goodlife beyond their ability to pay for it. i might well be wrong and they may be wonderful people.

to me stuff like this remains aesthetically empty unless associated with some spurious idea of post modernism (yet another art world scam to get your money). painting wise its just rot.

unless you're some kind of USA based tree hugger with a liking for wearing t-shirts emblazoned with lone wolves (sic) and grizzly bears then this humble reader strongly suggests you keep your money in your pocket!

remember when painters used to able to actually paint as opposed to come up with a 'big concept'? or at least remember when the 'big concept' was actually heartfelt and not some careerist blag on a way to climb the art worlds social ladder and live the life you really have no ability to pay for thru through the sale of your work and demand for it from the public?

or maybe, i'm just too much of an old cynic..

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Coffee Table Book.......2003-06-10

I have been a fan of Olly and Suzi's work for several years since their exhibit at the Natural History Museum in London. This book provides a tremendous story to accompany the amazing art and photos. Ideal for adventurers, art enthusiasts, and animal lovers. Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars i want to hang out with olly and suzi.......2003-06-04

Simply put, this is an extraordinary book. A friend gave it to me and I do not know whether it is more a art, travel, nature, wilderness adventure, or photography book, because it defies classification, but in any event, it is a serious page-turner. I dont know where to start...the images from all over the coolest and most exotic places on earth, of some of the funkiest and loveliest paintings ever, are captivating. These guys live most children's dreams, they travel around, hang out with rare species of animals (some dangerous, some not), paint them and then get the animals to interact with the art - so they are at one with nature, creating stunning images and at the same time living at one with nature. A perfect gift for kids, visual artists, performance artists, photographers, or people with a sense of adventure or wanderlust.

Book Description

Expanding on the author's year-long study of the shrimp and salmon aquaculture industries as an Alicia Patterson Foundation Fellow, the book lays out the rationale behind aquaculture development: increasing the world food supply and creating jobs in areas hard hit by declining landings in wild fisheries. However, reality is something else entirely: ravaged ecosystems and bankrupted local economies. The author expands on his existing case studies, near his homes in eastern Maine, and Sonora, Mexico, and links them to events in other parts of the world.
The author's 30 years experience in fisheries and aquaculture qualifies him to weigh the rhetoric and sift out the truth of this story. In six years as a freelance journalist, writing for the New York Times, Yankee, National Fisherman, and other publications, he has managed to describe complex material in an interesting and palatable style.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty informative .......2007-04-18

Molyneaux has decided to take up the banner and raise awareness about the possabilities of aquaculture as a means of sustainance for the worlds population. He mostly focuses on the bad elements of the aquaculture revolution and points out the destruction and impact on lives that this emerging industry has brought with it.

As a student of aquaculture I was disheartend to read this book as my view is that aquaculture is indeed the only way forward for us if we want to consume any type of fish without doing irreverseible damage to the worlds rivers and oceans. While I agree with Molyneaux that there is significant drawbacks to the practices that we have followed so far, and that big industry needs to be monitired and forced to play by the rules, I still feel that this industry is in its infancy and does hold hope for the world.

The book is punctuated by bad spelling and formatting of paragraphs and at the end there is a disclaimer that they ran out of time. There were a number of times through the reading of the book where these errors made me think of stopping my reading of the book but I carried on and I am glad I did. Molyneaux did some great research when writing the book but there is one quote by a captain from Gloucester, MA whose last name was James and I didnt see him referenced in the sources at the end of the book. The quote was about the Captains views on trawling at the time (1920's). If anyone knows what this quote was sourced from can you let me know as I would like to read it.

Anyhow this is my first review on AMAZON and I do recommend this book, as its important that people understand the challanges faced with bringing that slab of salmon or pound of shrimp to your table.

5 out of 5 stars For All Global Citizens: A Courageous Stand.......2007-03-15

I have finished "Swimming in Circles" and it has made a difference for me in understanding many arenas. I have a clearer understanding of the battle being waged between technocrats and naturalists. I am far more aware of the impact economic motivators are having on our ecosystem and their threat to sustainability. I believe Molyneaux has successfully balanced diplomatic protocol with journalistic responsibility. It is important to raise consciousness and at the same time I see, now, there is also a sense of urgency in doing so.

Molyneaux's writing is an example of what is possible when a wild and youthful Kerouacian grows beyond young paradigms and doesn't sell out, but rather he builds on top of the worlds he has known and creates new models for enlightened living, freedom and fulfillment.

It is more for lower elementary, Grades K, 1, and 2.

National parks, it has been said, are "the best idea America ever had." With the advent of national marine sanctuaries, the United States has taken this good idea underwater. Prominent marine biologist Sylvia Earle and underwater photographer Wolcott Henry take readers on a breathtaking grand tour of America's undersea parks in Wild Ocean. With big, gorgeous color photographs on nearly every page and enlightening text to enhance the reader's sense of each location, the book is a must-see for ocean enthusiasts. From the tropical splendor of coral reefs to the magnificence of northern rocky coasts, marine sanctuaries are national treasures, snatched from the jaws of pollution and development just in time to ensure that people will always have an opportunity to appreciate the ocean's beauty. Earle and Wolcott take you under the waves with whales, sea turtles, sharks, and other marine creatures to show how worthy these fragile environments are of protection and even expansion. The political message here is clear: these places are worth the taxpayers' money--see for yourself. Wild Ocean is an impassioned plea for preservation of America's seas. --Therese Littleton

    Book Description

Discover the best kept secrets of our natural heritage, the 12 national sanctuaries created to safeguard pristine marine environments, protect precious oceanic species and historic sites, and provide a dramatic, unforgettably magical realm beneath the waves. From New England's Stellwagen Bank to the Channel Islands of Southern California, from Florida's vivid coral reefs to the craggy coast of the Pacific Northwest, and on to Hawaii and American Samoa, Wild Ocean is a submarine voyage of discovery that will take you places few Americans have ever been, with a world-renowned marine scientist and a gifted underwater photographer and their colleagues as your guides. Sea otters, manatees, and majestic whales...an underwater canyon...reefs alive with manta rays, parrotfish, and sharks...a sunken Civil War ironclad -- Wild Ocean offers all these seldom-seen treasures and much, much more, in an endlessly informative, visually arresting tour of America's undersea preserves.

THE definitive introduction to America's 'Parks Under the Sea'.

Beautifully illustrated with photographs from a virtual who's who of underwater/nature photography -- Wolcott Henry, David Doubilet, Frans Lanting, Gary Ellis, Stephen Frink, Norbert Wu ...

From the slow-moving Manatee in the caribbean waters off Florida to playful sea lions in the Channel Islands off the California coast, this book takes you on a whirlwind journey through what may be America's last and greatest wild places. Sylvia Earle's unique perspective as America's foremost underwater explorer makes her the ideal tour guide for this sweeping journey.

There's something here for everyone -- armchair travelers, experienced divers, nature lovers, adventurous spirits. The one book you really ought to own if you have an interest in exploring the vast wealth and staggering diversity of our national underwater heritage. More mysterious, more alluring, even more diverse than our National Park System, the National Marine Sanctuary System is the adventureland of tomorrow.

I thoroughly enjoyed every page and often find myself reaching to the bookshelf to "go back" to places that one day I hope I'll have a chance to visit. This book gets my highest recommendation.

      Book Description

In the dark days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, a unique bond developed between Lieutenant John Bulkeley and larger-than-life General Douglas MacArthur. 'Wild Man' Bulkeley's small fleet of PT boats were, after all, virtually the only force capable of carrying out offensive action against the overwhelming Japanese attack. This unlikely relationship forged in the midst of catastrophe culminated in one of the most thrilling moments of World War II-the escape from Corregidor related in this powerful book. MacArthur's Escape recreates the drama and danger of March 12, 1942, when, under cover of darkness, four PT boats under Bulkeley's command slipped out of Manila Bay to run the Japanese blockade on a harrowing two-day, 600-mile trip to Mindanao-where long range bombers waited to carry the general to Australia to begin the long hard road back to the Philippines.

5 out of 5 stars PT Equals PLENTY TOUGH.......2005-05-25

I am pleased to say that I have now just finished the Book. I thought it was very good with wonderful sources of information. In reading the Book, I too went back to the Philippines at a time of desperation and the feeling of being deserted by my Country.

The feeling of hunger, the thirst for Torpedoes, Engines, Spare Parts, and Ammo stayed with me thru-out the Book. I tried to close my eyes and feel the horror of knowing that I was fighting a no win Battle. I came away feeling that MacArthur was a true Toot your own Horn type Commander, whose Ego was larger then the Japanese Troops surrounding the Island.

Some Higher Brass in the States were really angry that MacArthur was rescued and had hoped he might perish on the Rock. I felt a true sense of anger that MacArthur did not visit his troops more and that his every move was a type of Chess Move to Crown Himself King when all was said and done. The heroics of the PT Boat Boys should never be underestimated. They took the fight to the enemy with odds that no Bookmaker would dare take. Fighting with Tired Engines, Bad Gas, and Horrible World War One Vintage Torpedoes, they did our Navy Proud.

The book shows that PT not only stood for Patrol Torpedo Boat, but PLENTY TOUGH. It is true that Bulkeley loved to toot his own horn and was a master Talker and promoter of himself. But one thing is for sure, Bulkeley believed in the PT Boat as a fighting weapon, and believed in the men who stood on her decks. No one can ever take that away from the man. I would have to rate the Book on a scale of ten as an 11. It was informative and kept me wanting to go back and read more. Nice Job...........

      3 out of 5 stars MacArthur's Escape.......2005-04-13

MacArthur's Escape, by George W. Smith, is the story of General Douglas MacArthur's escape from Corregidor by PT boat. In my opinion the book does not break any new ground with respect to this episode. However, it still is exciting to read. The only shortcoming is the author's use of clichés throughout the book. Other than that, this book is a quick and interesting read and I recommend it to anyone interested in World War II.
