4 out of 5 stars A Different Sort of Travel Guide: Fascinating Park Trivia.......2007-05-19

This latest Uncle John publication proclaims on its back cover "It's time to hit the Trail!" Hit the history books is more like it. This wonderful little volume is full of fascinating trivia about the national parks and monuments found in the US and Canada. Each chapter is brief enough to be read during a single trip to the throne room of your house, and for the most part the prose is enjoyable enough to keep you coming back. Favorite stories for me were "The Great Pig War" in which the US and England nearly managed to go to war over a dead pig (San Juan Island National Historic Park) and the Mojave National Preserve's "lonely phonebooth."

For the most part the history and folklore seemed accurate enough, though the authors did slip a little when they wrote that Ansel Adams had saved King's Canyon with pictures of its Giant Sequoia Grove. There is no such grove in King's Canyon proper. General Grant Grove is now administered as a part of King's Canyon National Park, but it has been protected since 1890. In any event, King's Canyon was preserved because it so closely resembled Yosemite. On the other hand, virtually every other element of the book is accurate. Indeed, this is one of the few sources I have ever read that correctly notes Hot Springs Arkansas is the oldest National Park, dating back to 1835, long before the Yosemite Grant or the creation of Yellowstone National Park.

So, by all means get this rather unusual travel guide. It probably won't help much with actual trip planning, but it is nice for whiling away the time between trips: especially that portion of the time when you are otherwise preoccupied.

Interesting tid bits about National Parks. Suggest you read this before visiting the parks. You might decide to change your routings, in some cases.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like a Frommer's or Fodor's Guide to the Denali NP Area.......2006-04-11

This book is very thorough in covering everything around Denali National Park, and I mean everything. There is a trade off in that it isn't very deep in any one area, but if you are afraid that you are going to miss out on a hidden gem in the area, get this book. I used it on my last two trips to the find restaurants I never knew of and a better campground to stay in when I couldn't get into the park.

A couple of considerations, there are few illustrations in this book and it really does read like a Fodor's guide, so it is not a thrilling cover to cover read. Also, the information is starting to get a little dated. The information is still valid, although prices and schedules are probably getting out of date. Hopefully a new edition will come out in the next couple of years.

5 out of 5 stars Discover Denali easy way.......2005-08-07

Once you get there, you learn that Alaska is EXPENSIVE, especially mistakes in planning well ahead. As is Denali National Park. And more you know, the better. For those planning a trip to Denali NP a word-of-mouth is probably the best way to go. The book by Dow Scoggins offers a good starting point and a reference for the w.o.m. search. Myself, I bought four guidebooks about Alaska and Denali, three more-or-less useless, rather collections of ads by different operators from the region, and the Scoggins' one. After being there, I can tell you that the book is worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Very Enticing Book: Now I Have To Go There!.......2005-01-09

Discovering Denali by Dow Scroggins is a "Complete Reference Guide to Denali National Park and Mount McKinley, Alaska," and the subtitle says it all. This book is a must for anyone going to Denali National Park area or to attempt climbing Mount McKinley (Denali). Scroggins details the beauties, necessities, delights, and dangers of this Wilderness adventure. He is specific in telling what equipment to bring and what to expect on many different trails. He covers all seasons individually. You'll also find an excellent guide to animals and plants found in this special area of the United States. He has included an interesting history of Denali National Park, driving and transportation information, as well as lodging and restaurants, activities, maps, and calendar of events. This is the best guide we have seen of what you need to know before you go to this vast and beautiful wilderness, whether you are a one day sight-seer, a camper, a back-pack hiker, or an expert mountain climber.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a complete guide to Denali National Park, AK.......2004-01-18

Discovering Denali includes information on how to get to the park, what to see on the way, where to stay (including campsites, bed and breakfasts, hotels, motels), side trips and excursions, and tips for fishing, hiking, flightseeing and even climbing Mt. McKinley (also know as Denali, "the High One"). There are also bits of interesting history and folklore, extensive maps, and some personal insights by the author. It is the first and only source of information that provides detailed descriptions about the 43 individual sections of the park, including backpacking and camping information that heretofore has only been available upon arrival.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a great guide!.......2003-01-11

In my many treks to Denali, I have never Had to search for places and things that I had not explored- until I purchased this guide. The author brings to life the Park, as well as a reason to take the 'trail less traveled', as if there was a passion and connection with with the land that he so describes.

I have used the Canada guide in the past when visiting Banff, but this book provides more in depth coverage of the parks (Banff and Jasper). If your primary visit is to these places, I would recommend this book as an excellent guide!

3 out of 5 stars Good reference guide.......2007-08-27

I used this, along with Best Easy Day Hikes to plan a trip to Glacier. I wouldn't necessarily use it as the only reference guide, but it was a good start and was helpful for mileage and difficulty ratings for each trail. I also generally do quite a bit of research for my trips on the internet. This did come in handy one day we were trying to fill an afternoon with a shorter hike, though. It was good to have more detailed information about each trail to assist in that decision.

One thing to be warned about at Glacier - especially if you go early in the season (we went 1st week of July)- information from Rangers is not always accurate or up to date. We were told several trails were closed due to snow that we found out too late weren't. We missed one very good hike due to this. We also were told the Highline trail would only take us a couple of hours. When we got to Granite Park Chalet (4.5 hours later) we found out the trail generally takes at least 4 hours. You will want to add in time for picture taking and possible traffic jams (by mountain goats and such) and if you go early in the season, crossing of snow fields. We also found out that several people were advised not to hike the Highline when we did due to some dangerous snow fields (narrow trail covered in slick snow with a sure to be dead drop off if you should slip). I guess my suggestion would be to ask several people instead of relying on advice from just one. It is a beautiful park that everyone should see once - I would recommend the Highline, Swiftcurrent, and Hidden Lake trails.

Pretty much all the information is present in Canada's great
topographical maps, but those are available only when you're there...

1 out of 5 stars A Big Let Down.......2005-08-02

I have used Lonely Planet travel guides for years. Yet, I am sorry to say that this one is a real let down. The lay out is not user friendly. The print styles are very difficult to read. The book is not directed to the outdoors person as was the hallmark of the series. I was throughly dissappointed in this guide. The Moon guide is a vastly superior guide to this area.

4 out of 5 stars great all around bk.......2004-07-26

maybe b/c we're hikers, we wish there was even more info on hiking in these parks! but the hiking info in the bks we thought very helpful. we thought the bk did a great job hitting all different tourists' needs. we especially appreciated all the little charts of "must see's," the basic info (post offices, laundry, etc.), the many well-laid out maps, etc.
our only complaint is that it seems the authors put more passionate energy into the canadian parks. the descriptions in Glacier were a little more blah. in all, a great help though! well worn on our trip.

1 out of 5 stars For Hikers Only.......2004-07-25

I own and use several Lonely Planet Guides. I have come to trust these books as thorough, authoritative and helpful in planning and implementing trips. The Banff, Jasper & Glacier National Parks book is an exception and meets none of these criteria unless you sole focus is hiking. This book is for hikers and has little information for others. Furthermore, of the 280 pages of actual information, only 57 pages are devoted to Glacier National Park. Information concerning lodging, restaurants and other activities such as cycling is sparse. The few maps that are included detail mainly hiking trails. If this book had been titled A Hikers Guide, I would highly recommended it.

5 out of 5 stars A worthy companion for these parks.......2004-07-08

Just the kind of book I'd want wandering these Parks for the first time. Along with lodging and eating ideas, this book includes maps of the parks, hiking routes and descriptions, and my particular favorite, the section near the end which gave background of the geological, flora and fauna aspects of this region. It was well organized and easily utilized. I carried it my bag and referred to it often, and was able to astound (or annoy) my companions with countless facts.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars For us, best of the bunch.......2007-08-23

Using Amazon and local bookstores, I checked out all the recent Canadian Rockies guidebooks I could find before choosing this one. It has good explanations of geology, flora, and fauna found in this area. We took many of the suggestions for lodging, food and things to do, and was not disappointed with any. I'm not a hiker - I walk - so I can't judge the suggested hikes, with the exception of one, rated "easy" near Banff. Not easy. For un-hikers who want to "hike" I recommend Graeme Pole's "Walks and Easy Hikes in the Canadian Rockies". It rated the Banff walk as "harder" (that is the toughest of his ratings).

Book Description

Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park is home to a vast network of hiking trails. But if you're only going to be in Glacier and Waterton national parks for a day or two, have time for only one or two short hikes, and you're looking for trails that are not too physically demanding, which trails should you choose? This book answers that question. Best Easy Day Hikes Glacier & Waterton Lakes contains short descriptions and maps of the author's favorite easy day hikes in Glacier and Waterton. All of the hikes in this little book are relatively short, on well-defined, easy-to-follow trails that take you to some of the area's most spectacular scenery—without taking you to physical extremes. Features 28 hikes.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Trail Guide.......2007-06-25

Best Easy Day Hikes for Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks is a bit misleading as a title. While there are easy hikes, some are far from it. For example, one hike is nine miles long with a 1200-foot climb while another is over 14 miles long. Fortunately, the distances and elevation changes are clearly marked in the description so it is easy to select those you are willing and able to tackle while leaving the others for the more adventurous. There are also maps for each hike but it sometimes took me a while to use them. The actual trail wasn't always well defined within the larger area portrayed on the map and I often found the trailheads especially difficult to spot. It was not a major problem as I always worked it out in the end but it is an area that could use a bit of improvement.

There are 28 hikes listed and they are broken down into 5 geographic areas of the two parks. My wife and I did 2-3 hikes from each area and found the descriptions to be both helpful and largely accurate. The book is small enough to easily fit in a hip pocket and held up very well during a full week of heavy usage. Color photos would have been a nice addition but that would have made the book both larger and heavier which is not ideal for a pocket guide. Overall, this was a great purchase at an extremely reasonable price.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good for the Money.......1999-12-12

Its construction is not as durable as one would like for a reference to carry with you while hiking, but what can one expect for that small an asking price? However, the descriptions and maps for each hike are easy to understand--even for the novice hiker. 25 easy hikes are included in the book, with distance, degree of difficulty, time required, and elevation change included. There are no pictures in the book, but still its very well done.

5 out of 5 stars Very good guide.......2007-09-11

5 out of 5 stars Practical Planner for a Canadian Rockies Vacation.......2005-09-29

Moon Travel's "Canadian Rockies Handbook" is packed with the practical information needed to plan a great vacation in the Canadian Rockies. In a well-organized format, the handbook covers how to get there, what to see and do, where to stay, and a nice slice of commentary on the various towns and other sites of interest. The discussion about accomodations includes a decent range of prices and facilities. The focus is on the area in and around Banff and Jasper National Parks, a stunningly beautiful area with endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, sight-seeing, and relaxation. The handbook includes maps and diagram that are sufficiently detailed to enable to visitors to get to the main points of interest. The handbook also provides information on popular hikes, golfing, and white water rafting, among other activities.
This handbook is highly recommended to anyone planning a vacation in the Canadian Rockies, even if they have visited the Rockies before. This handbook provides enough detail in a compact format that it may inform regular visitors on wonders they may have missed on prior trips.

5 out of 5 stars Best, most practical guide.......2005-08-09

Best and most useful information for trip. Well written and concise. Much better and more useful than Frommer.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Thorough.......2005-07-25

I'm going to the Canadian Rockies for my honeymoon, and I couldn't ask for a better guide. The author includes every detail one could want. I'm looking forward to using it on the trip. I can tell I've chosen the right place, because the author himself has chosen to live there!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent buy.......2004-10-03

We spent a week in the Canadian Rockies, using this book as our guide. The book gives excellent recommendations for accomodations and activities - we did not go wrong following them. It gives more information that is beyond the basic, "usual", details. It also includes descriptions of many hikes, from 1-hour hikes to full-day hikes, as well as description of road-accessible sites for the non-hikers.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for hikes.......2003-08-04

Just got back from GNP and used this book extensively for hikes. Great descriptions and format allow you to quickly narrow in on the best choices for the time you have and area of the park you are at. Also has a number of good descriptions of bike paths, although the author's advice on biking along Going-To-The-Sun Road (p.66) is really a bad idea. It's way too narrow and congested to be safe for bikes.

1 out of 5 stars Complete??.......2003-02-28

Only the first twenty pages mention ANYTHING about recreation or facilities. The rest is simply a hiking guide. No color pictures.

2 out of 5 stars No Color Photos.......2002-08-04

I bought this book along with the Falcon Guide book and was very disappointed with both books. This one offers good descriptions of the hikes and what to expect, but no color photos. A nice general overview of the hike, length, elevation change, difficulty, and some color photos of the highlights were all I wanted, and neither book fit this description. You would only need one or the other, and really either would suffice, but if you want color photos pass on both.

5 out of 5 stars The best all-around guide on Glacier NP........2001-09-05

I bought both this book and the Falcon Guide to Glacier NP. Although a little out of date, I really preferred this book. I found its hiking maps to be far superior -- they're drawings with dimension that gives you a really good idea of what the hike is going to be like, and the author actually expresses some opinions and preferences, which is rare in a guide book like this. Most important, I agreed with her judgements.

5 out of 5 stars Glacier National Park and Waterton Lakes National Park.......2000-06-01

Nice size for backpack. Concise profiles of the various hiking, biking, skiing trails with needed info re length, difficulty, elevation gain, sights along the way as well as the locale of each. There are small maps to give you an idea of each trail and a selection of photos. Included in the intro are suggestions of where to stay, the amenities of the area and important safety tips.
