Adding to these challenges, just before their finalsummit, Phil was diagnosed with colon cancer, and theresulting surgeries and complications were expected toend his career. This is Susan and Phil's story: a tale oflove set in the mountains, a story of triumphal highsand devastating lows in quest of a seemingly impossibledream.

5 out of 5 stars REMARKABLE STORY - REMARKABLE COUPLE.......2007-09-04

This book was suggested to us as not only a mountaineering story but a story of life's struggles. We weren't disappointed but very humbled. This dual autobiography (each taking turns telling their story) was a fast-paced read, taking us from childhood to mountain top, leaving out nothing. A very intimately detailed sharing of two full lives. Color photographs support the many stories and stages in the Ershler's lives.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to be inspired, buy this book! .......2007-06-11

I read "Together on Top of the World" in 2 nights - I just could not put it down! Incredible story! The best book that I have read in a while and I'm a voracious reader. Certainly one of the best mountaineering books I have ever read, in part, because it is not just another mountaineering book. It deals realistically and holistically with the lives of two inspirational people - their individual histories, their partnership and love. It's about adventure, highs and lows, overcoming life's seeming insurmountable hurdles, success, vision, goals and dreams. Very motivational! This book has got it all!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Story of Mountains and Love.......2007-06-07

Sue and Phil have created a wonderful tale of mountains, challenges and love. Phil one of the greatest guides in the world and guides people up the worlds great mountains. Sue, shortly after meeting Phil catches the mountain bug and sets the goal of climbing the Seven Summits. While you might think he does all the work, Sue ends up inspiring and encouraging Phil as he battles a life long sickness. You will love the great story.

5 out of 5 stars Not just a climbing story........2007-06-07

This book touches all lives not just climbers. It touched all my senses. I laughed, cried, smiled and got angy. I felt like I could relate to it from my own life, of course on a different level. In the end it is a "feel good" story. Even my 84 year old mother loved it!

5 out of 5 stars An inspiration..........2007-05-18

An inspiring story about love, humility, grace, courage ... and mountaineering. Dreams and adversity are a part of living; Phil and Susan show you how to live.

3 out of 5 stars nice pictures but the stories..........2006-08-22

The concept of this book is great but does suffer in the implementation. Many of the pictures are excellent and provide wonderful imagery for the authors' related experiences. One of its most interesting aspects comes at the beginning with the revelation that the Carstensz Pyramid is a part of Asia yet Morrow still insists that it is the continent of Australia's highest peak... simply due to proximity, how bizarre? With the exception of the stories from Doug Scott and Gerry Roach I found the others of moderate interest, often ending with the feeling that these peaks were beneath their capabilities and were climbed simply for their commercial value. Overall interesting yet somewhat disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars From the summits of the world to the coffeetable.......2002-04-23

The 7summits have become a modern queste to escape the fast world. But it's not just wealthy business men 'buying' themselves to the summit, all kinds of people from many countries are on the infamous list.

Steve Bell has doen a thorough job of compiling the different viewpoints about 'what is the 7th summit', Carstensz Pyramid in Irian Jaya or Kosciuszko in Australia.
The book is filled with useful general info about the mountains, route sketches but most of all inspiring stories from the climbers themselves, coupled with breathtaking and unique pictures.
At the end is also a list with all the details of the first 60+ climbers and other statistics, but the problem is ofcourse that these are outdated right away (the current 23-april-02 list is 91 persons long and can be found online.

Whether you are a climber yourself and aspire to summit these great peaks or you are an armchair mountaineer who likes to have something wonderful too look at on the coffetable, this book is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book full of awe-inspiring accounts and photos.......2001-04-21

This review is based on the Mitchell Beazley, UK edition.

Seven Summits is a fantastic book by Steve Bell (a superb British mountaineer) all about the highest mountains on each continent. For each mountain there's detailed explanation about the various climbing routes, the best climbing season, flora and fauna, weather, statistical information, etc. The mountains of focus, if you didn't know them already, are Everest, Asia, 8848m; Aconcagua, South America, 6960m; McKinley, North America, 6194; Kilimanjaro, Africa, 5895m; Elbrus, Europe, 5642m; Vinson, Antarctica, 4897m; and Kosciusko, Australia, 2228m/Carstenz, Oceania, 4884m. Most of the book is comprised of touching personal accounts from climbers who have reached the summit of a particular mountain; even diary entries, such as Jasuko Namba's whilst she was on Everest on the 10th May, 1996: her last diary entry before a freak storm killed her and 7 other climbers in one of Everest's worst disasters. The back of the book includes diary contributions with short bios of the contributors, as well as a table of all of the successful `seven summiteers'. Seven Summits is a very classy and professional book, as you would expect from this specialist non-fiction genre. Photos are plentiful, and always outstanding. The writing style (presumably Steve Bell's) is superb, and captures the emotions that these mountains evoke wonderfully. It is worth noting that the Editor, Steve Bell, is the director of a superb mountaineering expeditions company called Jagged Globe, based in Sheffield, UK; so if this book inspires you enough (and it probably will), head for www.jagged-globe.com.

Whether you're a elite mountaineer or just simply interested in mountains, this book is well worth buying. A similar highly recommended book is `On Top of The World' by Richard Sale & John Cleare, which documents the world's 14 highest mountains, all in the Himalayas. It's similar to Seven Summits but a little bigger; but of course it doesn't capture the delights of other mountain ranges around the world like what Seven Summits does. Go on, buy it; buy both! You won't be disappointed!

Dick Bass was a successful entrepreneur. Frank Wells was a Hollywood studio president. Together they set out to accomplish what no one else ever had: climbing the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. The fact that both men had so little climbing experience turned out to be their greatest strength: since they had no idea what they were in for, they never considered their task out of reach.

Rick Ridgeway, an accomplished climber in his own right, chronicles their journey, allowing readers to decide if these adventures are the result of midlife crisis or simply about men pursuing a dream with unshakeable resolve. Whatever the case, Ridgeway's fast-paced adventure provides gripping descriptions of the world's tallest peaks. We see the logistical nightmares of Antarctica's Mt. Vinson, the unpredictable weather of McKinley, and the extreme altitude of Everest's 8,848 meters. Ridgeway continues up Aconcagua, Elbrus, Kilimanjaro, and Kosciusko with lively accounts that capture the day-to-day operations of expedition life, and more intriguingly, the growing bond between two driven men. --Ben Tiffany

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2007-05-01

I had a different take on the story than many of the previous reviewers. I never felt that Bass and Wells tried to hide their wealth or the fact that they were novice climbers. What I found most inspiring was the fact that they rarely let failure deter them. I'm sure true mountaneers will gain little from the book, but "outsiders" will gain a great deal of knowledge about the sport without having to interpret technical descriptions.

5 out of 5 stars A different outlook on Mountain Climbing!!.......2006-11-17

I really enjoyed this book, and despite it not being as descriptive as other Mountaineering books. If you take this as a story of two men who have little climbing experience achieve a goal of climbing the highest Mountains in each Continent, 7 summits in total. I found it an amazing book of self determination, motivation and true friendship.
Yes it is true, they couldn't have otherwise succeeded at this unless they had the money to do so, but the book never denies the reader that insight.
This booked had me routing for them from their first Everest adventure, I just wanted them to achieve their goals.
For those who are wanting a descriptive mountain climbing book this isn't for you, but those who want to read about a great challenging adventure over coming multiple diffculties this is an excellant read.

2 out of 5 stars Less Mountains, More Sap.......2006-03-28

This book is definitely not one to purchase if you are looking for detailed accounts of climbing these mountains. We read far more about the planning and personal lives of these men; neither of whom is interesting enough to command this attention. The dialogue between the two men is incredibly canned and sappy and Ridgeway tries in vain to capture the true feelings resulting from these ascents. You would probably be better off reading individual guides if you want to get a feel for these climbs. There are definitely better books on the subject.

1 out of 5 stars What Money Can Buy.......2005-07-13

This book, in the main, is nothing more than hubris in print. Wells and Bass typify the attitude of today's wealthy elitists: the belief that because they have lots of money, they are somehow ennobled and entitled to everything the world has, including the world's highest mountain peaks.

Skip this book. If you want to read good mountaineering lore, try "Annapurna" by Maurice Herzog, or Hillary's account of his climb of Everest.

2 out of 5 stars Poorly written.......2005-07-03

This book reminds me of athlete biographies written for kids. All the characters are presented as totally one-dimensional cliches-- business leaders who refuse to lose, tough-acting butchy women with hearts of gold-- all your favorites are here! You're forced to read page after page of detailed conversations that are clearly fictionalized. The author bends over backwards in an effort to elevate Bass and Wells to superhero status. All of this can get very annoying! The bottom line, as I understand it, is that Bass and Wells did something that they should be very proud of. By treating their adventure as a world-class mountaineering accomplishment (which it clearly was not) the author actually detracts from the story.

Understanding new institutions, like building them, takes sensitivity, wisdom and patience. Sir Nicholas Bayne has those assets in abundance, and in this new history of the annual Western economic summits he deploys them with great skill. No other observer can match Bayne's combination of extensive personal knowledge and sophisticated interpretive skill. This book surveys the first quarter century of summitry against the wider backdrop of globalization and institutional change. A must-have for anyone interested in contemporary global political economy.

An indespensable guide for all students of this subject, from the man who probably knows more about its history than anyone else.

3 out of 5 stars Summits: Climbing the Seven Summits Solo.......1999-11-26

This book about a quest to climb the 7 summits (highest mountain on each of 7 contingents) solo is a mixed bag. The photography is stunning, and rates this book right up there with any coffee table travelogue. This book is in large format and is indeed a coffee table type. The photography expands well beyond the typical mountaineering subjects and focuses as much on the travel and locales as it does on the mountain climbing.

The mountain climbing and the text is the weak link. Perhaps it should be excused by the format, which isn't conducive to extended text. But the brevity of the text leads to problems including lack of exposition and in some cases, apparent truncation of the story.

All in all, this is a book worth having, but it isn't a mountaineering read.

Peak of a climber's career

7 Summits Solo, (Summit, USA) by Robert Mads Anderson To Everest via Antarctica, Robert Mads Anderson Reviewed by Neil Nelson, The Evening Standard, Wellington, New Zealand Saturday, February 24, 1996

Having spent the past 20 years scaling some of the world's most difficult peaks, American-born Aucklander Robert Anderson set himself a new challenge: to climb the highest peak on each of the world's seven continents.

As an added challenge, he elected to climb them solo.

Ultimately, he failed in his bid, with Everest getting the better of him on two separate occasions. But failure to stand on the top of the world's highest peak doesn't diminish Anderson's achievement or the highly readable accounts he has written of his adventures.

As the price tags would suggest, the two books which have resulted from his seven summits project are totally different.

7 Summits Solo is a large-format, lavishly produced, 160-page volume which includes dozens of superb colour photographs taken by Joe Blackburn during the expedition (Note, nearly all photos in the book are Anderson's).

Anderson's account of the expedition is essentially a précis of the story he tells in To Everest via Antarctica. The 220 page Penguin book (Stackpole Books, USA) contains just a handful of photographs, but includes a far more detailed account of Anderson's adventures.

During the past decade or so, I've read numerous accounts of climbing expeditions: this one rates as one of the best.

Unlike some mountaineers, who feel compelled to describe in minute detail everything they did during the expedition, Anderson concentrates more on the adventures he had actually getting to the mountain.

He admits it is more of a travel book than a book about climbing and that he wrote it for a broader market.

Some chapters have little to do with climbing at all. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in Anderson's descriptions of his travels in Russia, late in 1992, after conquering Mt Elbrus, Europe's highest peak. With Elbrus out of the way, and three weeks left on his Russian visa, Anderson decided the opportunity to see some of Russia was too good an opportunity to miss.

With the Russia of old rapidly being split into a series of new countries, and new border crossings appearing at random, it was decided a large bus would be the easiest way of moving around. One was soon found and with several companions Anderson set off for a fascinating tour of parts of Russia which had seldom seen Western tourists. The tales he relates of his journey make for absorbing and humorous reading.

With a degree in writing and a career spent mainly in the advertising industry - the business he set up in New Zealand and subsequently sold helped fund his seven summits project - Anderson wastes few words. He has an economical, easy-to-read style and knows how to tell a good story.

While the price of 7 Summits Solo means it's unlikely to appear on best-seller lists, To Everest via Antarctica deserves to be. One of the most enjoyable books I read in 1995, I look forward to reading of Anderson's further adventures.

Mee is a playwright and a historian, among other things, and I found his view and dramatic, descriptive powers to be very useful in re-enacting these events.

I bought the book because of a debate with an intellectual friend about the aftermath of ww ii in eastern europe, thus I was focusing on the chapter on the conference at yalta. It is particulary interesting that Mee subtitled this chapter with reference to the problems of unintended consequences (the inevitability of which is the foundation of the libertarian tendency toward minimalism in government -- and in foreign policy, for that matter).

Not only did the yalta chapter teach me much more about yalta than I expected, each of the other 6 crucial moments were richly rewarding.

The only two quibbles I have are with the sub-title. Being a zeitgeist believer, I don't believe out-of-hand in "great men," even when churchill and roosevelt are involved. Somewhat contradictorily, I don't believe in the idea of "fateful," so much as crucial. And from reading Mee, I believe he would let me edit the sub-title accordingly, once he got to know me better.

The Pacific Northwest has its own version of the seven summits: Hood, Adams, St. Helens, Rainier, Glacier, Shuksan, and Baker, stunning peaks that crown the Cascade Range. Art Wolfe captures their untamed beauty from near and far in breathtaking images that reveal high snowfields, lush old-growth forests, and the haunting blue light of glaciers. These striking photographs convey the many moods of these untamed mountains, which for many people represent the last pure and wild places on the planet. Michael Lanza's text includes fascinating little-known facts about each of the seven summits.
