"Ask yourself how you feel about cockroaches. Do you shiver at the mere mention of their name? Could you kill one with your bare hand? Would you rather not be talking about this?" Even if the answer to all these questions from David George Gordon's The Compleat Cockroach is "EEUGHH" (meaning "yes, indeed"), you might want to get this book for your lawyer, landlord, or 10-year-old. Strong-stomached adults will find it a trove of information on every aspect of cockroach biology, control strategies, literary cockroaches, and cockroach song and dance--not to mention cockroaches in art, as pets, or (gulp) as cuisine.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent comprehensive guide...from the educational point of view!.......2006-03-19
Recently, I conducted a spring cleaning of my personal library & found a number of interesting books (some seemingly trivia, some really nonesensical) which I have totally forgotten about.
This is one of those books, seemingly trivial in content & yet educational in scope. Here, from this one amazing volume, I did not realise that I could learn so much about what I have always considered to be Planet Earth's most hated creature!
The author, a biologist by training, thinks otherwise & sets out to change my belief. According to him, cockroaches are intelligent, hard-working, & well-groomed (Can you believe that?), as well as being one of the oldest & most successful beings on Planet Earth (340 millions old, & able to withstand a nuclear blast!).
I have even learned from the author that they have made appearances on the Apollo XII command vehicle.
This book really tells it all:
- the life history of the cockroach, including what they eat (just about anything), where they live (everywhere from tropical cabes to microwave ovens), & the steamy details of their sex lives (antenna fencing, anyone?);
- cockroaches in human culture - from La Cucaracha to Joe's Apartment (the song & dance routines), & even cuisine (they are three times as protein rich as chicken & taste like shrimp (Can you believe that?);
- home cockroach control - what works, what doesn't, & why;
& much, much more...
Since young, I have always been fascinated by nature history as I grew up in a 'kampong' (a local term for village) on the southern end of the Malaysian peninsula, heavily surrounded by forests and grasslands. [In the 1950's, these were the battlegrounds of the communist insurgents during British Crown rule]. I recall it was the subtitle of the book, which goes like this 'Step into a World That Until Now You've Only Stepped on' that finally sealed my decision to buy the book during the mid-90s.
I really enjoy reading this book again! On the whole, & in conclusion, I would like to rate this book to be an excellent comprehensive guide!
PSOCID CORNER.......2000-12-19
Greetings and salutations once again , before I get to this issue's review I just wanted to say thanks to those of you who have sent in comments or suggestions. At first I was going to review "The Roaches Have No King " by Daniel Evan Weiss A good book but definitely not for children of all ages. It tells the story from the roaches perspective and in fact is narrated by two roaches Numbers and Bismarck. Other roaches are named Ajax , Argo and Julia Childs , which gives you an idea of the wit. Although the book gets your attention if you are terminally proper or sans an open sense of humor you might want to skip it. Ergo I have decided to send you to a book which is kind of like a web site for "roachabilia" it's also how I learned of the a fore mentioned novel. The book is "The Compleat Cockroach" by David George Gordon. I originally met Dave Gordon at a NY Entomological Society meeting back in 1997. At the time he was on a book tour and following his presentation I picked up a copy or four. The book opens with a well presented biology lesson of the insects 340 million year presence. While we have for the most part developed a negative view of roaches we are reminded of some of the other roles they play , such as the removal and recycling of dead plant and animal life in forests. Their vital niche in the food chain as well as their role as pollinators in rain forests and desert areas. With this information in mind we begin to understand how roaches enter the field as key cultural entomological figures. With a presence so varied and international their interactions and escapades easily enter human culture. Several quick references would be, "Metamorphosis" by Franz Kafka ( yes I know it's probably a beetle but everyone else thinks it a roach) , Don Marquis's famous "Archy" circa 1920 and of course the Mexican revolution song entitled "La Cucaracha". Several years ago a friend of mine had this song played at my birthday party in a Mexican restaurant by a miriachi band , boy did I get some weird looks but everyone knew the words even the little guys under the table. Most recently the MTV movie "Joe's Apartment" demonstrated that roaches out sing and dance Disney's cricket. In addition Mr. Gordon tackles the topics of observation and control dating back to ancient Egypt to some modern methods or fiasco you may recall with the use of fungi (Bio-Path). This book is fascinating with tid bits and references galore. I urge you to pick up a copy , you probably won't put it down. You will also find yourself repeating the phrase " I didn't know that" several times. Well with a good book to read let me take the opportunity to wish you all A Happy and Healthy Holiday season and oh yeah enjoy the roach nog.
Terrific for Research as well as Light Reading.......2000-10-06
I thought this book was TERRIFIC! It was alot of fun to read. The style was casule and informative. Read it, you'll learn all you ever need to know about cockroaches. Not only does it give you the basics on anatomy, behavior and reproduction of these creatures. The book provides a more complete picture of these 340 million year old pests and their role in human art, culture, society, and (alas) cuisine. Funny, fast paced, great for a report.

"The Complete Cockroach," by biologist David George Gordon, is an exceptional reference on cockroaches: from etomology to popular culture. Two pages are devoted to "Kafka on Cockroaches" (129-30); students found this information useful when writing on "The Metamorphosis."

Book Description
This book provides a broad overview of solute transport in plants. It first determines what solutes are present in plants and what roles they play. The physical bases of ion and water movement are considered. The volume then discusses the ways in which solutes are moved across individual membranes, within and between cells, and around the plant. Having dealt with the role of plant solutes in 'normal ' conditions, the volume proceeds to examine how the use of solutes has been adapted to more extreme environments such as hot, dry deserts, freezing mountains and saline marshes. A crucial stage in the life cycle of most plants, the internally-controlled dehydration concomitant with seed formation, is also addressed.Throughout the volume the authors link our increasing understanding of the cellular and molecular bases of solute movement with the roles that these fulfil in the whole plant under both ideal and stressful conditions, showing how these are dictated by the physical laws that govern solute and water movement. The book is directed at postgraduates, researchers and professionals in plant physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology.

Customer Reviews:
I love this book!.......2005-05-12
This guide is not only helpful, it's absolutely hilarious. The writing is of a much higher level than you'd expect in a standard guide. It's smart, it's brutally honest (when they don't like something, they let you KNOW), and it doesn't pull any punches. New Orleans is a strange and wonderful place, and all guidebooks to it should be this good. But since they aren't, buy this one.
Absolutely the best.......2002-03-28
Travel guides are always a hit or miss affair: who can tell whether the editors came to town with the same mentality as you? Too many are geared for the lowest form of tourist: the pathetic sheep following the herd. Not so with this guide to New Orleans, which has been our touchstone on four separate trips to the Big Easy.
Thorough, up-to-date, and above all HONEST. Strongly recommended for anyone visiting for the first time, and especially for anyone returning for a more "refined" visit to the city.l
Don't leave home without it!!!.......1998-12-13
I have been an eternal fan and grateful reader of the Time Out series for years. From their books to their magazines (NYC, Amsterdam & London), they have made my visits quite enjoyable. In Time Out New Orleans they have offerred invaluable choices from food to music to where to get a good cup of "joe." I can't emphasize enough how much one would benefit to heed their suggestions. I just returned from NO in early Dec '98, lucky me that the book came out in time.

ýCommunity, Identity and Stability'.......2000-10-29
Aldous Huxley's `Brave New World' takes place in Europe, in 625 after Ford (people started a new era in 1908, the year in which the American industrialist Henry Ford produced his first Model-T car). There is a New World society. People are no longer born the natural way, but the state creates and conditions them. Humans are being mass produced and preconditioned to become members of one of the social classes, ranging from Alpha plus to Epsilon minus. People are going to work and get their soma. They get their education at their level and they get sleep teaching. It's a totally arranged life.
Aldous Huxley was born at Godalming in 1894, into a prominent family of scientists. The nearly blind man was educated at Eton and Oxford and writer of many novels, short stories, essays, drama and verse, but `Brave New World' has proved to be his most lastingly popular work. The title was taken from Shakespeare's `The Tempest', in which Miranda, when seeing the first glimpse of the world outside the island on which she grew up, speaks the words: "O brave new world that has such people in it."
In this novel-of-ideas and dystopia, or in other words, a savage criticism of the scientific future, the motto is Community, Identity and Stability. There is no love, no individualism and people do not have emotions. Everybody belongs to one big group. No one is alone, because everybody is the same. The motto is, off course, an ironic contrast with the battlecry of the French Revolution: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. It's obvious that Huxley wants to point out the dangerous aspects of the advancement of science. People will abuse the results of investigations, which will make the individual disappear.
The link of the motto with the battlecry of the French Revolution is not the only one. Many of the character's names are composed by use of the names of historical heroes. For example Benito Hoover, is made of Benito Mussolini and Herbert Hoover. This way the writer is parodying all the time.
The story starts at the London Hatchery and Conditioning Centre, where the Director explains some students how humans are being made by the Bokanovski-process. Eggs divide again and again (sometimes even 96 humans are beings hatch from one egg). When the Director asks a student whether he knows what a parent is, he answers: `"Human beings used to be." he hesitated; the blood rushed to his cheeks. "Well, they used to be viviparous."'
Bernard Marx is different from others. Something went wrong when he was in his bottle. He turned out to be, although he is, too small for an Alpha. He doesn't look like and has more emotions than other Alphas, which makes him not belonging to the big group. He and his colleague Lenina, a very pretty girl, who is very popular among the Alphas, go to New Mexico, to the Savages. Here the people haven't been scientifically produced. They meet John and his mother and take them to their world, which John really likes. He would love to see the New World. John hasn't been manipulated, so he's still able to have strong feelings....
A real pessimist can only think of a world like this. Therefore I think it's amazing how Huxley made up this story. It's been a great pleasure reading it, and it makes you start thinking about what the world will be in the future. Next to that, there's another, an educational aspect in the book. People have to be aware of abusers of knowledge. Huxley sure makes clear what he wants to say. It's a perfect novel.
Everyone should be required to read Brave New World!.......1999-05-21
Everyone should be required to read Brave New World. Huxley provides great insight into the effects of science dominating the human race. He shows that life in the Utopia is more efficient in many respects, however it lacks the deep human emotions that give meaning to life other than "constant consumption." Although first published in 1932, it is amazingly close to reality of life today. Brave New World's vivid descriptions and lively commentaries will hold your attention throughout the entire book. Once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down!
A Shocking Glance At The Future.......1999-05-05
This was a great book. Huxley's view of a future "Utopian" state is very shocking, and it says a lot about society and technology. It really makes you think, and I like that. It is also very straightforward and it's hard to miss the point Huxley is making. If you like science fiction this book is a must! Definitely worth your time.
