    Book Description

Practical Handbook of Ground Water Monitoring covers the complete spectrum of state-of-the-science technology applied to investigations of ground water quality. The emphasis of the book is on the practical application of current technology, and minimum theory is discussed. The subject of ground water monitoring is covered in great detail, from the Federal regulations that require monitoring to the various direct and indirect methods of investigating the subsurface - to the analysis and interpretations of complex sets of water quality data. All aspects of ground water quality investigations, including site assessment techniques, health and safety considerations and equipment decontamination, are dealt with in a logical order that will allow the reader to follow along in the same thought progression as a field project. The experiences and expertise of more than 30 practicing scientists and engineers combine to make this book the most comprehensive reference compiled on the topic of ground water monitoring.

5 out of 5 stars Use of Book for Litigation Support.......2001-02-01

My firm provides litigation support services to attorneys. We found Dr. Bedient's book to be very useful both as a reference and as a means of educating our clients who typically have limited technical capabilities in the area of groundwater hydrology. The book covers a variety of topics, all in sufficient detail, I believe. It is well written and organized, for easy reference. If the authors write a sequel, I suggest additional case studies that discuss some of the environmental "mysteries" out there!

4 out of 5 stars It works for me.......2001-01-31

I teach a graduate course in groundwater contaminant transport each year, and I have used several texts in the last 15 years. The latest edition of Bedient et al. is the best current overall reference for this course. Few texts mention characterization and remediation at the same level of detail, and this text has the most complete presentation of analytical transport solutions with problems that demonstrate their use. In my course I stress application of computer modeling tools (which I must provide separately), but this text provides a fine foundation to my students' physical and chemical understanding of the available models.

4 out of 5 stars I switched from our own text to this more current version.......2001-01-04

I teach a course at the University of Oklahoma on the topic of this text. Actually, colleagues and I published a now outdated text on the same subject in the early 90s. I compared this text with other available texts and selected it to replace our own volume. While not perfect (what textbook is) I found this revised edition to be a valuable introduction to the subject. I liked the way it covers not only the fundamental processes governing fate and transport but also has sections discussing the applied aspects of the subject (remediation, characterization, etc.). The authors have taken great effort to make sure the updated version is very current -- I can especially speak to this in the specific areas of my research. Admittedly, I did supplement the text in certain areas, but I do this with every class I teach (and did it with our own text). And different professors supplement on different topics in keeping with their personal interests. Based on my experience with the text, and feedback from students, I definitely plan to use it again.

1 out of 5 stars Please, the errors! The errors!.......2000-11-30

If I can speak for myself and my classmates,

We have taken a graduate level contaminant groundwater class at one of the City University of New York branches throughout the last semester. As a group of students that actually read through books and work out problem sets that are provided, we were baffled to see all of the typographical, graphical, and equation errors that abound throughout. How can a book that is supposed to be used by people in groundwater professions not have a scientific editor go through it with a fine toothed comb? In this case, any comb would have been adequate to spot the errors. At a certain level in the sciences, professionals turn to reference texts that will aid them through certain problems. Equations that are crucial for modeling contaminant transport are definitely not made for memorization. Unfortunately, this book has fundamental problems with these equations and will never be part of my professional library. We thought we ran into a short barrier when we found errors in the beginning of the class. We then realized that we were to be plagued by grotesque errors throughout. Save your ninety dollars and buy something by Fetter. Or at least burn this when you are done highlighting and correcting. Better yet, wait for the revised third edition.

        Book Description

Published in 1991, the first edition of The Practical Handbook of Ground-Water Monitoring quickly became the gold standard reference on the topic of ground-water monitoring. But, as in all rapidly evolving fields, regulations change, technology advances, methods improve, and research reveals flaws in prior thinking. As a consequence, books that document the state of the science, even widely acknowledged definitive works, become outdated and need to be rewritten periodically to stay current. Reflecting this and renamed to highlight its wider scope, The Practical Handbook of Environmental Site Characterization and Ground-Water Monitoring, Second Edition provides an updated look at the field. Completely revised, the book contains so much new information that it has doubled in size. Containing the most up-to-date information available, this second edition emphasizes the practical application of current technology. It covers environmental site characterization and ground-water monitoring in great detail, from the federal regulations that govern environmental investigations, to the various direct and indirect methods of investigating and monitoring the subsurface, to the analysis and interpretation of complex sets of environmental data. Cheaper, better, faster was the mantra of the 1990s, resulting in more streamlined approaches to both environmental site characterization and ground-water monitoring, but also pitting the application of good science against the mandate to get a project done as quickly and inexpensively as possible. This book provides unbiased, technical discussions of the tremendously powerful tools developed in the last decade, helping environmental professionals strike a balance between good science and economics.

2 out of 5 stars Some good info, but not enough.......2002-03-25

For the reader who currently knows nothing about water contamination and purification, this is a decent book, since it provides some eye-opening information. However, there are better books out there, depending on what you're looking for.

For specific advice on water contamination and safe water alternatives, including bottled water and home purification, I recommend Colin Ingram's "The Drinking Water Book." It has more information and a better format, including a simple chart that rates the effectiveness of different home purification methods for eliminating different contaminants (something this author didn't include).

If you're looking for something more political, buy "The Sierra Club Guide to Safe Drinking Water." This lists specific steps to improve drinking water on a larger level, including political action and people/agencies to contact. It also includes a list of major U.S. cities and their violations of water purity regulations. Finally, it lists the EPA drinking water standards in an appendix. Of course, it also includes advice on safe water alternatives, but this is not as extensive as the recommendations in The Drinking Water Book (see above).

5 out of 5 stars Very Scary! Excellent Read! A Must for Every Nutritionist.......2000-07-24

I just got finished reading this book in between classes, and all I can say is WOW! Be aware, and beware of your tap water. If these statistics are correct, then the EPA and the U.S. government are not concerned with protecting your right to clean water, and therefore, you must educate yourself in order to protect against degenerative disease.

[ 1991-1992 EPA records showed that the nations water systems committed over 250,000 violations of the Safe Drinking Water Act, affecting more than 100 million Americans - and 10% of those exceeded the MCL (Max Contaminant Level) of the EPA. ]

This book is a great start finding out the truth of the matter. Toxins are everywhere! We all need to learn where they exist and remove them for our own and our childrens sake.

Someday, a high ranking official on TV may review this book, or a similar subject and try and spin these numbers a certain way to make it not sound so bad, but don't be fooled. Statistics seldom lie. Only politicians do. Politicians can come from any field, not just government. Politicians come from industry, medicine, lobby, and big business etc. Be a detective, and look for anything that doesn't make sense.

"The Truth is Obvious, Everything Else is Questionable"

5 out of 5 stars Read this book! It contains vital information........1999-08-17

This book is certainly a very factual and "blunt" book about the seriousness of our domestic water quality. With the coming "Y2K" event on the horizon, I believe Lono A'o's comments are even more appropriate and noteworthy. I have given this book a 5 star and I am giving serious thought to making this book a required reading for all the students in my Environmental Studies class at New England College. That's how serious I believe the issue is.

4 out of 5 stars Very thorough about current water filtration methods.......1998-08-28

If you ever plan on buying a water filter of any kind -- this is the book to read. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that I wish it would have given more specific information regarding name brand water filtration systems available and where to get testing information etc.

        Book Description

THE DRINKING WATER BOOK takes a level-headed look at the serious issues surrounding America's drinking water supply. Unlike water purifier manufacturers and public health officials, Ingram presents unbiased reporting on what's in your water and how to drink safely. Featuring all the latest scientific research, the book evaluates the different kinds of filters and bottled waters and rates specific products on the market.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Why Should I Be Concerned About My Drinking Water?.......2006-09-26

Colin Ingram pulls the reader into his book by offering "Ten Quick Tips" to "wet" your appetite for the valuable detailed information that follows.

Ingram, who has years of experience as a scientific writer, articulates with clarity in this comprehensive guide to the importance of pure drinking water for maintaining optimum health. The chapter on water pollutants and the risk to health was startling. There is a logical order to the book as the next chapter deals with water testing and finding out what is in your water, and the best drinking water for good health. I was amazed to discover the various sources of commercial water suppliers and the number and variety of their products.

Several chapters deal with water purifiers and how they work. They include information on filters, distillers, alternative methods, and suggestions for combining types of purifiers. Ingram included suggestions on how to evaluate these systems, types of installations, a cost comparison of purifiers, and a comparison of the cost of bottled water versus that of a purifier.

I found the chapter summaries and author's recommendations especially helpful. He not only introduced primary and alternative methods, and combinations of purifiers, but also pros and cons of various views being expounded by vendors, environmentalists, and politicians.

The appendix, glossary, and index add to this compact, comprehensive manual on how to insure you are drinking safer water.

This is an important, informative, guidebook, calling for imperative action steps to do something about the water you are drinking.

5 out of 5 stars Simple, common sense information.......2006-09-18

I've had an interest in safe drinking water for many years. The market is flooded (pun intended) with advertising and claims. Mr. Ingram has made a difficult field very understandable. So much so, that you can make an intelligent decision on how to ensure safe drinking water for your family. I bought more copies and have given them as gifts.
He claims to be totally independent and from the book, it seems he is.
I am a new author, finishing my book Common Sense, The Joy of Living Smarter. I am listing this book in my reference chapter.

5 out of 5 stars A Candid Review by the Author.......2006-07-31

I wrote this book because after extensive communication with government agencies, universities, non-profit organizations and private sector manufacturers, I simply could not find objective information about drinking water safety and consumer options. Since I have been a professional writer and editor for over four decades, I decided to bite the bullet and do it myself. I spent five years researching material for this book and I have no axes to grind; just the desire for truth. This is the 2nd edition of this book. The 1st edition was hailed as the definitive consumer book on drinking water, and I believe this book is even better. You'll find that it contains the most objective, complete and easy-to-understand information on drinking water that is available, and this opinion has been confirmed by many authorities in the field of drinking water safety. Thanks for your time, Colin Ingram.

5 out of 5 stars The best drinking water book you can buy.......2002-03-25

This book is well named, since it is the definitive book on drinking water. It includes extensive information on water contaminants, water testing, bottled water, and home purification systems. The information is well-researched, easy to read, and well-formatted, with simple charts and diagrams supplementing the text where necessary. I bought several books on drinking water at the same time, and this one was clearly superior to all the others. Don't waste time and money; buy this book first!

3 out of 5 stars Good guide, but..........2000-03-04

This book is certainly a good guide for people living in the US who have to face polluted drinking water in their homes, but if you are a scientist working for some time already in the field of water treatment I recommend that you keep your fingers off this book. This book is certainly written for the broad public and doesn't offer much news for the experienced reader. Especially if you live outside the US this book is not very suitable. It's just a shame that "real" engineering books are always so expensive.

            Book Description

This valuable reference delineates the ground water quality concerns associated with the planning and usage of septic tank systems. Septic tank systems represent a significant source of ground water pollution in the United States. Since many existing systems are exceeding their design life by several-fold, the usage of synthetic organic chemicals in the household and for system cleaning is increasing, and larger-scale systems are being designed and used.
