Great Environmental Chem Text.......2000-06-20
I took a web-based environmental chem course, and this book was used in lieu of lectures. The author does an outstanding job of presentation and the text is very well-organized. Includes a lot of current information. The problems within the text are very challenging and reflect real world issues (i.e., PCB concentrations in the Great Lakes) My only criticism is that the chapters are sometimes overly long. Other than that, this is one of the best E-chem texts I've come up against, and I certainly learned more from it than I would have from listening to a prof lecturing for a term. Recommended highly!
Good presentation of a broad topic........1999-01-07
I am also a chemistry student and I found the book to be rather easy, but that is because the text is very clearly written with good presentation and concise wording. It is certainly a good place to start in trying to understand an environmental problem, especially if the readers background in chemistry is only on a general and limited organic level.
Informative, easy to understand.......1998-08-24
Environmetal chemistry is a very helpful book for studensts in environmental chemistry studies. But as a pure chemistry student i find some parts of the book too easy, even boring at times, specially the chapters on organic environmental chemistry. On the other hand the chapters on physical environmental chemistry are very good and contain challenging problems.

Book Description
Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Manual & Desk Reference is a straightforward reference and training source designed to provide the site safety and health professional with a comprehensive guide to responding to emergencies involving releases or potential releases of hazardous substances. Important topics are discussed such as: Toxicology, Sampling and Analysis, Personal Protective Clothing, Chemical Incompatibility, Decontamination, Labels, Placards, and Other Identification, and Site Investigation, Control, and Emergency Response.
Designed along the lines of 29CFR 1910.120 (Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response regulation), this manual covers the training requirements of managers, supervisors, and professionals (engineers and scientists) involved in hazardous waste site operations and includes all topics covered in the OSHA-required 40-hour training course.
The CD-ROM contains the book on PDF as well as the NIOSH Chemical Database for 2002. There are blank forms such as: site health and safety plans, checklist, worksheets, sample MSDS sheets, accident report forms, and site visit forms.
The CD also includes sample questions, practice exams and practical field exercises.

A Welcomed Addition To My Reference Library.......2002-05-01
...
Perhaps the most complicated and convoluted set of regulations is those concerning hazardous waste, its handling, disposal, and response to its release. Of course it can be considered that the Federal Government did err by calling process by-products hazardous waste instead of following its performance-based philosophy as demonstrated in the OSHA regulations. Regulatory compliance could have been so much simpler if the definition employed was - this by- product has the potential of being hazardous if miss handled, such miss handling entails the following. Alas, this is not the case and we are burdened with a set of regulations that can turn youth aged overnight.
There is hope however, and a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel can be seen. Coming like Dumas' Three Musketeers of old, galloping into the fray and seeking to make order out of chaos come the Hackmans with their Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response Manual and Desk Reference. Since receiving this volume, it has become a ready and useful reference. It provides 16 chapters along with a CD-ROM of essential compliance information. A true compendium of valuable and useful data, guidance, and analyses.
For example, consider Section 2. Hazardous Waste Defined: Contained therein are the following major topics: The OSHA Definition, EPA Definitions, The DOT Definition and Training Aids and Resources. These are then further broken down into sub topics. Such organization, scope and thoroughness provide a valuable tool when evaluating a particular situation or compliance methodology. Other sections cover such topics as Material Hazards, Chemical Incompatibility, Toxicology, and Sampling and Monitoring to name a few. The most substantial section is entitled Superfund Sites and Brownfields: Site Investigation, Control and Remediation. This alone is broken into 22 subsections, each of which is further subdivided.
Perhaps one of the best technical writers of the last century was Samuel Glasstone. His volumes on Chemistry and Nuclear Engineering were very easy to read, understand, and use. This is because he endeavored to number every new topic so that easy reference could be made. This also provided logic to the subject matter, which assisted in the flow of the information that was providing. The Hackmans have effectively employed this numbering technique, and by doing so have provided not only simple logic and understanding to complex subject matter, but have also provided easy access to the information provided in the text.
The text is enhanced by a Glossary of 91 pages plus a 12-page list of Acronyms. Both of these reference aids are important and necessary because of the complexity of the subject matter and that Federal Regulations breed and feed on acronyms and convoluted terminology. It is almost impossible to maintain understanding and awareness of all of them. In fact, the extensive glossary is a welcome adjunct because of the myriad of technical terms and regulatory definitions a fractioned needs to employ and understand. For example, in this glossary, the term hazardous substance is defined by 7 specific requirements; CERCLA, Federal Water Pollution Control Act, Section 112r of the Clean Air Act, Toxic Substances Control Act, DOT, Solid Waste Disposal Act and OSHA. This depth and breadth is valuable because it enables a comprehensive evaluation of a particular situation and assists in eliminating or at least minimizing the chance of an omission error.
It must be remembered that many practitioners are experts in a particular technical or regulatory area. As such, they need a tool that assists them in understanding and in becoming aware of requirements outside of their area of expertise. The provision of comprehensive definitions and information helps to foster such a broad perspective.
In addition to the book a special CD is provided as an additional resource. According to the authors this CD serves three purposes: It provides downloadable and printable resources for trainers - these include a sample HAZWOPER Worker exam, It provides a selection of NIOSH Databases which includes the NIOSH Manual of Analytical Methods and the NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, and lastly it provides 18 appendices to the text - these appendices include Limits for Air Contaminants ("Z Lists") 29CFR1910.1000 and the OSHA HAZWOPER Standard, 29CFR 1910.120. Just the contents of the CD is worth the purchase price of the text. All in all, according to the contents, the CD covers 33 separate topics.
When dealing with the complex issues that practitioners face every day, the information contained in the CD forms a comprehensive foundation of knowledge, data and information. This is presented in a concise and easily usable format. Also, instead of creating a second volume, the authors wisely chose this option of the CD to compliment the text, thereby producing one volume packed with essential information and resources.
One of the major frustrations a practitioner faces is that it is usually necessary to consult various references in order to address a particular situation. When a volume comes along that provides an encyclopedia of useful and necessary information, it does simplify many other time-consuming information search tasks. The profession has benefited from this work because it provides that simplification. The authors have brought together information from diverse sources into one volume. One volume, that has already proved its value to my practice.
The only shortcoming is that the use of color, especially in the signs and placarding examples would have been useful and would have assisted in making its reference value even greater. Seeing these items in the colors specified by the regulations would have enhanced the understanding of their meaning and employment. Perhaps just a color insert or inside cover display would have served this need adequately.
This volume has become a useful and welcomed addition to my reference library, and well worth the modest price.
Hazardous Waste / CLEAR & SIMPLE.......2002-04-27
We own an environmental contracting company and we are responsible for training our employees. This is the best book that we have seen to date. It is simple to read and easy to use. One of our services is hazardous material training for our client base. We are planning to use this book in the training classes. We enjoy how the book is laid out and how one subject rolls into the next. The subject matter is right on track for our industry. It is about time a book like this was printed. We are planning to generate revenue from the sale of this book and the upcoming classes that we are developing.

Book Description
The latest tested and proven strategies to maintain business resiliency and sustainability for our ever-growing global digital economy
Here is a comprehensive study of the fundamentals of mission critical systems, which are designed to maintain ultra-high reliability, availability, and resiliency of electrical, mechanical, and digital systems and eliminate costly downtime. Readers learn all the skills needed to design, fine tune, operate, and maintain mission critical equipment and systems. Practical in focus, the text helps readers configure and customize their designs to correspond to their organizations' unique needs and risk tolerance. Specific strategies are provided to deal with a wide range of contingencies from power failures to human error to fire. In addition, the author highlights measures that are mandated by policy and regulation.
The author of this text has worked in mission critical facilities engineering for more than twenty years, serving clients in banking, defense, utilities, energy, and education environments. His recommendations for maintaining essential operations are based on firsthand experience of what works and what does not.
Most chapters in this text concentrate on an individual component of the mission critical system, including standby generators, automatic transfer switches, uninterruptible power supplies, and fuel, fire, and battery systems. For each component, the author sets forth applications, available models, design choices, standard operating procedures, emergency action plans, maintenance procedures, and applicable codes and standards. Extensive use of photographs and diagrams illustrates how individual components and integrated systems work.
With the rapid growth of e-commerce and 24/7 business operations, mission critical systems have moved to the forefront of concerns among both private and public operations. Facilities engineers, senior administrators, and business continuity professionals involved in information technology and data center design should consult this text regularly to ensure they have done everything they can to protect and sustain their operations to reduce human error, equipment failures, and other critical events. Adapted from material the author has used in academic and professional training programs, this guide is also an ideal desktop reference and textbook.
Customer Reviews:
Light on content, disorganized.......2007-06-04
This book has some good sections, which are fine by themselves. However, I found the power chapters in the first part of the book to be disorganized and poorly written. The diagrams are not clear at all, and many have a lot of information in them that should have been removed. Almost like they did cut and paste without making them relevant to the text. Many diagrams are missing labels and annotations as well. There is a chapter on power quality that starts with a very dubious analogy about grades of gasoline and sports cars and the importance of using high quality power. Then the start of the next chapter says that modern equipment can use a large range of voltages and really power quality isn't important, availability of power is. Uh...great. So, I feel the continuity of the book was poor. I haven't finished everything, but so far, I am not impressed.
As far as the content that is there, I don't feel this is really an engineering oriented book. I didn't feel there were enough methods to really made decisions about availability or reliability, just general ideas, which we all have anyway (downtime is bad, uptime is good, etc).
I don't feel it really helps you understand WHY things are, mainly it rehashes industry best practices, which in many cases are driven by the vendors who are selling products used to increase services availability. There is an interesting appendix about the national power infrastructure, but it covers a lot of things that are already in the book, which is kinda strange. This is a collection of articles, not a book really.

Book Description
The contamination of soils and groundwater by petroleum is a growing problem, not only for the oil-producing countries. This book describes the possible approaches for preventing such pollution or, if it occurs, for its reclamation. It combines the knowledge and experience of scientists - providing scientific methods - on the one hand, and engineers - to show what is feasible taking costs into account - on the other. For the various approaches and processes, the experimental analysis, computer model development, and field implementation are discussed. Also considered is the migration of petroleum in soils, and its interaction with the soil and with bacteria.
Book Description
Offering a full coverage of all exam objectives in a systematic approach, so you can be confident that you’re getting the instruction you need to take Microsoft’s new MCTS exam (70-620), this book is packed with practical guidance and hands-on exercises to reinforce critical skills. Exclusive WinSim Vista Simulator allows you to perform a number of the exercises in a simulated environment, real-world scenarios put what you’ve learned in the context of actual job roles, and challenging review questions in each chapter prepare you for exam day.
Customer Reviews:
Good guide, easy to read.......2007-09-14
This book is easy to follow and understand. I passed the test with an 884. My biggest problem with this book is the WinSim program. That was basically a few movie clips showing how to do a few steps. The clips were from the easy exercises. There were a couple of ones where you got to click where they told you to. Basically that part was a complete waste of time and a big disappointment to me. There are 2 test on the cd (50 questions each) plus all the questions in the book. There is also some flashcards. It is a good book and if you only used this book you could probably still pass but I would recommend using other material as well. Overall this is a good book and I would recommend it (despite the WinSim issue).
Does the job... a little too well.......2007-09-11
This is a well-written guide. It's very readable and informative and you should have no problem passing the exam after reading this guide. All of the information that you need is there.
The only reason why I give this 4 stars instead of 5 is that a lot of information that you *don't* need is in the book, as well. There are whole topics that you won't find on the exam. It turns out that those topics are on the 70-622 exam (the Vista Enterprise Support exam). If you plan to take 70-622 next, you could probably kill two birds with one stone by reading this guide. If you don't plan to take 70-622 next, you'll waste a lot of time reading and studying topics that you won't be tested on in 70-620. Some of those topics include automatic deployment (Windows Deployment Services, ImageX, unattend.xml, etc.), user profile types (mandatory, roaming, super-mandatory), Group Policies (local, password, audit, inheritance), file/share permissions, dynamic storage types and security protocols (PPTP, L2TP, MS-CHAPv2, EAP etc.). Those account for a sizable portion of the guide. Basically, all of those harder topics that you usually find only in workplace/domain environments, you won't find on 70-620 (which is completely consumer/home-oriented). You can see what I mean by looking at the exam objectives at Microsoft's website.
So, the only fault of this guide is that it throws way more information at you than you need for the exam. Depending on your goals, that may be a non-issue... or it may be important to you if you don't have much time to waste. Either way, it does do the job of helping you pass the exam, and that's the most important thing, I'd say.
A Really Good Vista Book & Excellent CD.......2007-09-10
I have been using this book for studying the 70-621 exam (instead of the 70-620) since there weren't any books at the time for the 70-621. I have already been deploying Vista Business & Ultimate in our work domain after using Business & Enterprise at home (Technet Subscription was a really good idea).
I thought I learned quite a bit from the hands on, but I was pleasantly surprised how much this book covered in great detail. I almost always chunk the CD in the back of most books but the authors did a superb job on this CD. Excellent chapter tests of 20 questions each and two bonus sets of 50 questions each. Only problem I had was the WinSim when it showed a Movie section. I didn't get any sound but I wasn't sure I was suppose to, but either sub titles or sound informing me what tasks it wanted to take would have been helpful as it plays a little quick, so you have to replay it a few times to figure out what the scenario was about. Flashcards - I generally HATE flashcards, but this was fantastic, it didn't bore the heck out of me like 99% of them do.
Of course, the whole book is on the cd as well and I found I like reading it better than lugging around that heavy book since I can enlarge the print for easier reading.
Of course it helps to know the background of a couple of the guys (authors) who helped write this book - Michael Aldridge and Josh Evitt. They used to work for Transcender and I met Michael after he left there and have had lunch with him on a few occasions. Really good people and always willing to help/advise people on their careers and certifications (see certcities.com & mcmcse.com). Michael and Josh now currently work for Boson. Looking forward to buying products they produce for them as I know it'll be good.
For the Exam 70-620, I don't think you can do any better than this book. It's just plain easy reading (Sybex has always been good about that style) and straightforward and I almost maxed the client section of the 70-621 (just need more work on the enterprise section now). Good luck with your 70-620 exam, but with this book - you won't really need luck, just some study time.
Excellent Vista Resource.......2007-08-09
I used this book along with hands-on experience with Vista Ultimate to pass the exam with flying colors! Although the exam itself is on the easy side, this book serves as a great resource for all things Vista. This is also a very well-written book, and it is very easy to read.
As for the previous reviewer rating this a 1 star because they couldn't get the CD to work...no comment!
Good book for an easy test.......2007-08-08
First, this book is really good introduction to the Vista operating system. It takes you through all the necessary features for you to begin to understand Vista and perform the actions the tech for whom the exam geared. I have more prior enterprise experience than expected exam-knowledge level and was taking 70-620 as an excuse to learn Vista and of course get another certification. Studying for the exam (using strictly this book and real life experience) only achieved one of those goals. I did pass the exam with a 930. The exam "rigorously" tested one's knowledge of RSS, media center, Internet Explorer 7, and wireless.
If you are looking at obtaining knowledge to pass the exam and about the new features of Vista, this book is recommended. If you are looking for Vista in your enterprise (which is admittedly the next exam), I would recommend another book.

Customer Reviews:
Useful and interesting - STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.......2005-02-08
Despite the intimidating name and size of this tome, I found it fascinating to read. It covers everything from light bulb selection to rooftop chiller maintenance. The depth and breath of coverage is amazing.
This is not a hippie guide to backwoods eco-conservation. It is a practical manual, firmly grounded in science and economics that explains different strategies for maximizing comfort while minimizing energy use. In every case, the author examines both the pros and cons of the measure, and calculates the expected payback term. It is so helpful to have a book that is realistic in its treatment of energy conservation. Lots of books outline promising energy saving techniques, none I've read before talk so frankly about the problems you will encounter when you implement them.
Quite technical in many places, the text excels at explaining important concepts that are often ignored in other texts. I have a background in physics, but not until reading this book did I have a good grasp of the operation of absorption coolers or how the spectrum of a light bulb affects the visual comfort of the scene it illuminates. The concise overview of heat transfer mechanisms is more thorough than any thermodynamics textbook I've ever read.
Most important of all is the practical advice that is clearly based on a huge body of real experience. As the book so frequently points out, energy saving measures are useless if they break or are defeated by building occupants. Hundreds of (non-obvious) examples of these failures are given, with pictures.
This book would be great for anyone with responsibility for designing or maintaining buildings of any size. If you are hesitant to pay the high price, find it at a local library. I don't write many Amazon reviews, but after reading this book I felt compelled to strongly recommend it.
Superlative! A must have!.......2003-12-08
Superlative! The ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL by Donald Wulfinghoff is a "must have" for professionals, libraries, facility managers, policy makers, homeowners, and anyone else who is serious about saving energy and cashing in on lower energy bills. It is the ultimate energy saving resource for businesses, industry, and government. PLUS, it will save money and reduce pollution, satisfying corporate bottom lines, policy makers, and environmentalists all at the same time. This book is unique. Highly informative, illustration-rich, and user-friendly, it is treasure trove of everything you need to know about energy efficiency from A to Z. Don't bother looking elsewhere -- the ENERGY EFFICIENCY MANUAL simply has it all. This book will pay for itself almost as fast as you can spot a hot air leak or install an energy-efficient light bulb!
-- Amy Vickers
A secret weapon for the energy auditor.......2003-07-01
As an energy auditor I'd almost call the Energy Efficiency Manual a secret weapon, except it has so many good ideas that I can't help but show it to many of the customers and prospective customers I meet. The diagrams are very useful, as is the self contained but well cross-referenced way in which each improvement measure has been written. For example, talking to the maintenance manager of a hospital, we looked at the diagrams of hot/cold deck multi-zone systems while discussing the pros and cons of upgrading a constant volume air conditioning system to a variable volume system. It is by far the most useful book on energy management that I have ever read (well, in the case of the Energy Efficiency Manual, that I have partially read - its an enormously large book!), and the ratings of each of the measures are particularly useful, along with the practical, no-nonsense approach. The book is extremely well cross referenced and Wulfinghoff has covered an enormous body of knowledge in writing the book. As someone fairly new to the field I'm grateful that he went to the effort of documenting and making available his knowledge and 30 odd years experience in the Energy Efficiency Manual.
Everything you always wanted to know, in plain English.......2001-04-25
I nodded my head in agreement while reading Wulfinghoff's philosophy about energy savings in commercial and light industrial facilities. He distills 20+ years of experience in this field with practical, no-nonsense how-tos to gain energy and dollar savings in a wide variety of facilities and end-uses: lighting, water use, steam systems, space heating, water heating, air conditioning, scheduling, pumps, energy management controls: its all here in a well-written, well-illustrated book.
Perhaps best of all, the author goes beyond theoretical considerations of high-tech efficiency products, with precautions of what works and what might fall short. He also reminds facility managers to be mindful of the human factors that can foil our best efforts. He offers suggestions on how to plan and manage efficiency upgrades complete with information for building operators and occupants, so that the savings persist.
Highly recommended for anyone managing energy use in facilities, ranging from individual buildings to college campuses to government facilities. [I am a local government energy manager myself.]
Provides practical advice for avoiding pitfalls.......2001-02-04
Donald Wulfinghoff's Energy Efficiency Manual is a massive, 1,536-page reference work that is organized to guide the reader quickly to the right information for their particular energy project, problem, or inquiry. The first part of this "user friend" manual has 400 logically grouped activities for improving energy efficiency. each activity begins with Ratings and a Selection Scorecard to help the reader judge the merits and difficulties of that particular activity. "Economics" sidebars estimates the savings, cost, and payback period. The "Traps & Tricks" sidebars provides practical advice for avoiding pitfalls plaguing energy conservation efforts. Energy Efficiency Manual will earn back its cover price over and over again and is an essential, core reference for personal, professional, and community library energy conservation and energy efficiency reference book collections.

Customer Reviews:
Better books are available.......2007-06-16
I must say that this book is not up to the standard I've come to expect from recent APress titles on .NET. I'd love to give you details, but the simple fact is that I haven't found it to be of much use as a reference.
While it could be a little better, I recommend Programming WCF Services (Programming) instead. It serves well as a reference and a reader.
terrible.......2007-05-31
This book's puslisher cannot be Apress.
you don't buy definitely. You can read msdn instead of this book.
Noot good enough.......2007-05-25
Finding couple of articles in MSDN Magazine will be much clearer than reading this book.
lots of fluff.......2007-05-21
if only you realize this book is written by a group of so-called consultants in a single company that pushes its own product. you can do far better by browsing the free docs on msdn.
Get's you up and running fast with WCF.......2007-04-15
It gave me the rapid startup on WCF that I needed. All the other books prior to this one where out of date by 1+ years. This is the book that you want to get the rapid view of WCF. If you want a deep dive on "parts" of this, then Juval Lowy's book gives you details that are missed. There are a few details in Pro WCF that are definitely not in the MSDN documentation, but might be out on the web in a blog somewhere. So, you make the choice, but a book that brings it to you in a readable view with sample code, or go hunting an pecking - I'd rather save the time. This book, while not 5 stars, is probably the best at giving more senior folks a rapid overview of major capabilities within WCF. It's definitely tailored towards more senior folks that don't want to sit and stare at 100% code or API documentation, but want to see the features used in scenarios that what we deal with each day in our enterprises. Mostly integration, using existing applications, as they're probably hosted in COM or Java/J2EE environments.
