It isn't often that a sumptuous coffee table book is both visually appealing and scientifically packed with well-researched data. Hotspots Revisited hits the mark on both scores. This updated revision of the 1999 edition of Hotspots expands the number of planetary hotspots to 35. This is an information-packed compendium on those areas of our planet that are species-rich and home to the highest levels of species endemism. The book acknowledges that all biodiversity is important and that all nations and communities must do everything possible to protect our planet's rich biological heritage. Life, however, is not evenly distributed around the world and because of this fact, this volume presents a convincing and forceful rationale for adopting the hotspot strategy for prioritizing areas for biological conservation. On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on beans, peas, lentils, and legumes in India face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying beans, peas, lentils, and legumes to India? How important is India compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of beans, peas, lentils, and legumes vary from one country of origin to another in India? On the supply side, India also exports beans, peas, lentils, and legumes. Which countries receive the most exports from India? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for beans, peas, lentils, and legumes in India. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for beans, peas, lentils, and legumes for those countries serving India via exports, or supplying from India via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where India fits into the world market for imported and exported beans, peas, lentils, and legumes. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for India in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that India is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize India compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

This study covers the latent demand outlook for legumes across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 5,000 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of itÂ’s state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-à-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for legumes. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

Why offer this great book if it's out of print?!.......2003-11-08
Help! I am heart-broken!! I saw the ad for this book and gushed with joy- as I plan to get married in Santorini and have my honeymoon in Mykonos. I planned on buying this book for my fiance' for a stocking stuffer, only to see it is out of print. Why do you display this book if it is out of print??
Great Greece, Great guide.......2000-04-06
I used this book to plan a honeymoon, and it was very helpful. Because this book focuses on only two islands, you don't get stuck carrying around information on places you don't plan to see. The content is comprehensive and useful. It gives a lot cultural information, which is great, and the where to stay/where to eat information is more detailed than broader Island books.

Thieves Within the Pages!.......2002-09-23
This books was in the garbage on my third day in Greece. Travel books usually protect you against unscrupulous taverns and hooligans. But this one included a Santorini locale that threw all the underhanded tricks at you: inflated prices and bait-and-switch bar tabs! This book was excellently written, but became usless when I couldn't trust its recommendations for dinner or a night out. If you have it, double-check its recommendations with another travel book. If the other travel book doesn't include the establishment don't go!
the real thing.......2000-03-08
I thought Dana Facaros gave just the information we needed to get the most out of our holiday, and because we did spend a couple of days in Athens before we caught the ferry we were glad to find that section there as well. What I most enjoyed were her insights...being of Greek descent myself (my grandparents came from Naxos) I often had to smile in recognition. Other English writers just don't get it guite right. I too would treat her to an ouzaki any night of the week!

Diana has written a witty, informative and grammatically sound tome. Not too much or too little and with a great feel fo the place itself. And how could you desribe the most emphatic and vivid place on earth? The answer is to do it like Diana does: with knowledge, empathy and a deep understanding of colour, history and human nature. She is the Cyclades to me, and one day l will buy her a drink at a taverna while the sun is setting, and we will discuss our numerous anecdotes that we will share - joyfully, warmly and with great heart!
Title deceiving.......1999-07-10
This book is not a detailed guide to the Cyclades islands as one might expect. I bought this book thinking it would have loads of information on the island of Santorini but was very disappointed to find only 10 pages or so devoted to the island.
In fact the book's title is totally in appropriate. Half the book is devoted to Athens (what's that got to do with Cyclades!) and a quarter to General Info on Greece (History, language etc.) leaving only a quarter to islands coverage (hence the brief descriptions).

My children and I found this book fascinating and full of factual information. There is little written at this level about this man who had such an influence in connecting the west with the east. Reading this interesting and detailed overview will make you want to read more. I couldn't disagree more with the negative editorial review.
Excellent Historical Adventure About Genghis Khan.......2001-06-08
This is an outstanding book that I highly recommend to anyone who wants to read more then the plain dry history texts. Harold Lamb wrote a novel that is contextually accurate and describes events of the period. Of course, the conversations and detailed actions of the individuals are simply speculation, but the style in which they are written is lively and interesting. This is a thoroughly enjoyable book! If the reader has an understanding of the history of this period, and the events that were taking place, then so much the better!!

Lamb's histories all read more like historical fiction. He piques your interest and keeps it from the opening page to the very end. Although not a scholarly study of the Great Khan, the book informs as well as entertains.
History The Way It Should Be Told.......1999-12-05
WOW! This book brings to life the achievements of a man who had his heart set to conquer! The next time you're driving on a highway on your daily commute to work, look forward into the distance and try to picture how it would've been for an entire army to cross the distance from China to Europe on foot, through deserts and mountains! Forget all about the quick conclusions about "the cruelty of the hordes." That may have been the norm for the dark ages and for times of war. Perhaps Temujin (Genghis Khan) was a greater soul than he is oftentimes portrayed to be. This book is about a leader. It depicts an extraordinary man who had vision, acted on his convictions, inspired his people and led them to victory.

A brilliant recounting of the life of a dominating figure of the 13th century. I am very surprised that the events of the Genghis Khan are not thought in schools. Due to this disappointing fact, I highly recommend this book to anyone who appreciates large scale conquests and for those who like to study history.
Good Reading, but Needs More Relevant Maps/Illustrations.......1999-12-01
This was a concise and quite interesting summary of a man who conquered a half of the world. A good attempt was made to examine Genghis Kahn the man, and not get caught up in technical and mechanical details. However, it would've been even nicer if the book contained more maps and relevant illustrations to enliven its content. E.g., a map showing the routes that he and his generals took from Gobi to Persia would be have been a fascinating illustration, a map showing who conquered which territory would've been good, too.
Genghis Khan by Harold Lamb.......1999-11-28
I have read this book twice. I was amazed by the description of military strategies and detailed description of just how far the empire reached. This latter is, I believe not realized by many-the incursions into Russia and Western Europe. The impact was, I believe, much greater than the average reader has had exposure to. The territory was massive and sexual tactics changed the genetic makeup of a huge amount of countries. Average history does not teach the impact of rape and its' obvious effect on ethnic, cultural, and racial genetic pools. One can see modern countries that still reflect this genetic impact.
