Not a Good Book For Canadian Built Cars.......2004-03-22
This book is very good if you have a US built Chevelle. Has no Info on Canadian Built Chevelles. You can find more info on the web than what's in this book.
Great for Everything!.......2000-06-11
We have had this book ever since we restored a 1970 ElCamino. We are currently in the middle of a 1971 Monte Carlo, and although some of the information is different, much of it is accurate for the MC as well. Our friends borrow this book so often we have to sign it out to them. Currently it is invaluable in researching a 1975 Nova. As with the MC, most of the information is the same (paint codes, etc.). I highly recommend this book to anyone researching their car!
The BEST way to properly identify the validity of a car........1999-07-21
This book gives just the right amount of detail to provide the car owner or a buyer with what the numbers really mean. It will also tell you in a hurry whether the equipment on your car is truly "original" I have accurately identified my 71 Elky as well as many others.
It is also a great reference when buying an "original" car. As some options for some cars were not identified by the factory apart from the original build sheet, the book only tells you about the numbers that you can find on various components. As an example, a 1970 SS was not identified by any of the numbers as an SS except on the build sheet. However, as any knowledgable enthusiast knows, the build number of the car (6 digits) is also stamped on the front of the block.
All in all a great book. Excellent for the Classic Chevy enthusiast Library.

Renowned Southern California architectural photographer Julius Shulman began exploring Malibu in 1929. Nearly 80 years later, he is still bringing back pictures of paradiseexcept that the pristine landscape is now a backdrop for luxury homes. In Malibu: A Century of Living by the Sea, more than 300 lush vintage and new photographs by Shulman and his collaborator Juergen Nogai capture the look and feel of a private Shangri-La. While many of the homes were designed by architects with local and international reputations--including James Moore, Frank Gehry and Richard Meier--the book also conveys the quirky flavor of do-it-yourself designs that hark back to the beach town's beginnings. A brief historical section describes how a Massachusetts millionaire's $10-per-acre land purchase was transformed into the Malibu Film Colony. Beginning in 1924, 30-foot-wide oceanfront lots were rented to Hollywood stars, who built modest weekend hideaways. Once ownership restrictions were lifted, the style parade began. In 1948, Modernist architect Welton Becket designed a flat-roofed beach house for his family with broad expanses of glass facing the ocean and a deep roof overhang to protect against the dazzling sun. Twenty years later, John Lautner worked his magic on a narrow lot by designing a towering curved concrete shelllike a surf rider's waveenclosing the floor-to-ceiling glass facade of Stevens House. Before land costs became prohibitive, artists and musicians often designed their own homes in eclectic, personal styles that incorporated local crafts, or even an oak tree growing in the living room. Local architects developed inventive ways of handling difficult sites, the constant threat of fire and the requirements of the California Coastal Commission. And the super-rich built their palaces, ranging from a crenellated monstrosity called The Castle Kashan to an 7,000-square-foot modular compound designed by Bart Prince. Invitingly packaged, except for the hard-to-read gray type, Malibu is above all a showcase for Shulman's signature manipulation of sunlight and shadow to reveal architectural form. -Cathy Curtis
Book Description
In addition to being one of the most recognized places in the world for its long association with celebrities (many of whom live here), Malibu's strikingly beautiful coastline contains a greater concentration of world-class residential architecture than perhaps any other city in the United States, if not the world. This gorgeous book offers a behind-the-scenes view of the most exciting houses built here since 1894-by John Lautner, Richard Meier, and Frank Gehry, among others-presented decade by decade by legendary architectural photographer Julius Shulman and his colleague Juergen Nogai.
Shulman, now 94 years old, first came to Malibu in 1929 and, armed with a Vest-Pocket Kodak, started taking pictures of the landscape and wildlife. He continued to visit for the next 75 years, and his personal archive of pictures from those years-a guided tour of houses that, for the most part, have never been shown to the public-forms the heart of this book. Hollywood historian and best-selling author David Wallace contributes an introductory walk through the history of Malibu and its inseparable relationship with Hollywood glamour. AUTHOR BIO: Julius Shulman is one of the most important and influential architectural photographers of all time. His numerous honors include a lifetime achievement award from the International Center of Photography. Juergen Nogai is an architectural and fine arts photographer based in Santa Monica, California. In 2001 he began a collaborative partnership with Julius Shulman. David Wallace is the author of the best-selling Lost Hollywood and Hollywoodland. Richard Olsen is an editor and writer specializing in architecture and design books. He is the editor of Abrams books such as The Ranch House and The Abrams Guide to American House Styles.

Malibu.......2005-08-13
I thought that the book was "outstanding" Particulary liked the history part and the progression of Malibu over the years.
Fantastic!.......2005-07-29
Despite reading the "Nice, but not Nice Enough" comment by one reviewer, I purchased this book and considered it for myself. I'm so glad I did. The reviewer misses the point. It's an architecture-oriented lifestyle book about the history of living in Malibu, not a technical book. Which explains why there are no floorplans. It's about the photos that take you thru each decade and each house, and they are gorgeous. The introductory text/concise house-specific texts are well-written and informative. The featured houses are mostly private, which explains why no addresses are provided. The 2 or 3 houses in the book that are open to the public are well known in this area, easily findable for those who have a yellow pages.
Nice, but not nice enough.......2005-07-21
The photography was excellent and commentary was okay. Very few detail images, no floor plans and few, if any, construction details. I'm interested in the details and how to replicate features or at least the materials used....but nothing in this book to help much. There was absolutely no street addresses of the houses mentioned, other architect books do---why not here??? The author did manage to keep very good track of the years of birth and death of the people involved.
Stunning!.......2005-05-11
I got my copy today... and roared through the pages and images... Beautiful and fascinating images of Malibu's past... Paradise Cove in 1890, the Malibu Ranch, The Adamson House. So many interesting stories and images... and lives! And... some great surf shots too. This is a perfect blend of the many lifestyles here in Malibu... all in one book. Educational and informative and with some good humor too. I know what I'm giving for Christmas presents now!
Book Description
The original Getty Museum, housed in a replica of a Roman Villa on a site overlooking the Pacific Ocean, is one of Los Angeles's most treasured landmarks. Closed for almost ten years while renovations were made to the building and the site itself was transformed into a center for the study of
antiquities and conservation, the Getty Villa is now set to open late in 2005.
The Getty Villa is a lively history of the Getty Museum, its renowned antiquities collections, and its growth from a small museum in a ranch house in Malibu to its first home in a building designed to replicate what we know of the Villa dei Papiri, an ancient Roman villa partially uncovered in
Herculaneum. Most engagingly, this book records the ten-year adventure in reconfiguring a beautiful, but topographically challenging, site into one that could continue to accommodate the splendid Museum building and also provide for an outdoor theater, laboratories for conservation work and
research, offices for staff and visiting scholars, and an education program for adults and children.
This is a story of architectural imagination, geographical challenges, and legal hurdles, all of which have resulted in a truly unique and beautiful site. The story is an enlightening and rewarding one for anyone interested in architecture and in the difficulties posed by building on a grand scale
in the twenty-first century. Beautifully illustrated throughout, the book includes 250 reproductions of works of art, photographs of both the old and the new Getty Museum, site plans, and architectural elevations.
Customer Reviews:
nice villa, but it had some drawbacks.......2007-03-25
At one level, this appears like a typical coffeetable art book. Large format, glossy pages and many detailed photos and illustrations. Certainly, you can treat it like that. Giving you several nice views of the Getty Villa over the last 30 years.
But True and her co-authors also provide a detailed history of how the villa was built. From the artistic aspirations of Getty to the legacy he left after his death. If you have already visited the villa, especially before the recent changes, then the text furnishes a neat counterpoint to your experiences. It points out that the villa was severely underserved with parking spaces. A key reason for that annoying requirement that you ring ahead to reserve a space. Another aspect was that entering the villa was often confusing, as the villa lacked a grand entrance.
To ameliorate these and other drawbacks is why the villa was shut for several years. Heavy and necessary upgrades. Plus, the new Getty Center was also being built elsewhere in Los Angeles.
The book has a hilarious anecdote. In 1993, there was a meeting at the Villa, for architects to decide on changes. A presentation was given about the last days of Pompeii and Heculaneum, before they were covered by volcanic ash. The presentation was because the Villa was inspired by excavations at those places. After the meeting, the people went outside, and saw fine white ashes fall from the sky! Was this an omen from the gods? Was Los Angeles to be destroyed by a volcano? Turned out, the ashes were from bushfires around Los Angeles, that had been raging for several days.
Seriously, though. If you are ever in Los Angeles, this book might inspire you to spend a leisurely afternoon at the Villa. It is really nice out there, by the Pacific.

The Gualenghi d'Este Hours: Art and Devotion in Renaissance Ferrara (Getty Museum Monographs on Illuminated Manuscripts)
ASIN: 0892362847 |
Book Description
Leading French painters in the late medieval period executed miniatures for lavishly illuminated books of hours. In the mid-fifteenth century, Simon de Varie commissioned such a book. Completed in 1455, it included five priceless works by the most eminent French painter of the time, Jean
Fouquet, as well as other striking paintings by two of his contemporaries.
In the seventeenth century, Simon de Varie's book was divided into three sections and sold as separate volumes. Two of these volumes are today in the Royal Library in The Hague. The third volume--thought lost until 1984, when it surfaced in a private collection and was subsequently acquired by
the Getty Museum--contains the first miniatures by Jean Fouquet to have been discovered in eighty years.
This beautiful book will reproduce in color all of the miniatures and historiated initials in the original manuscript, along with selected text pages with secondary decoration. Comparative illustrations also accompany the two essays in the volume. Marrow's text addresses the role of books of
hours in late medieval culture; the contents and form of de Varie's Hours; and the relationship of the miniatures by Fouquet to the rest of the artist's oeuvre. In a related essay, Francois Avril discusses the position of Simon de Varie and his family in mid-fifteenth-century France.
The publication of The Hours of Simon de Varie adds to the Getty's impressive list of publications on illuminated manuscripts begun in 1990 and including the widely acclaimed facsimile Mira calligraphiae monumenta.

If all American literature comes from Huckleberry Finn, all American surf culture comes from Gidget, the ostensible diary of Kathy Kohner, a teensy, gutsy teenage girl who crashed the all-male scene at Malibu Beach north of L.A. in 1957 and earned, from Moondoggie and others, the nickname Gidget, which meant "Girl Midget." Her father, the German immigrant screenwriter Frederick Kohner, fascinated by the beach-shack counterculture, interviewed his perky daughter at length, eavesdropped with permission on her phone calls, fictionalized her adventures, and batted out this influential bestseller. He nailed a tiny subculture's new form of speech ("If you want to know what goes on in Loveville ... Dig Number One: being gone on a boy is more important than having a boy gone on you.") and made it a pop-culture staple. Newly reissued with the real Gidget's picture on the cover (as on the original hardback), the book is very slim (appropriately enough) and historically beguiling. You'll like her--you'll really like her! --Tim Appelo
Book Description
Surf's up!
The classic novel of 1950's American youth-now back in print with rare photos and a new foreword by the "real" Gidget.
Customer Reviews:
A classic teen book.......2006-09-17
One of the best teen books out there - and it still reads liks a totally modern novel even though it was written over 50 years ago. And it's still a good fun read as an adult - it's so full of energy and wit and total honesty and excellent characters. Easy to see why it changed youth culture in AMerica when it came out.
The Magic is Still There...Hang Ten!.......2005-08-12
I never get tired of Gidget stories! This was a great book and I would recommend it highly. In fact, I plan to recommend it to my students this year. It's takes me back to high school and just wanting to be accepted. Even though I grew up in Denver, Colorado, which is far away from the ocean, I could relate to Gidget because of her size. I wish I could find some more Gidget stories to read.
Steffan! Steffan Kalee! You there?.......2004-06-21
I chuckled as I read Steffan's review. So Gidget was named after a porn star, huh? Possible, possible...was this porn star working before 1957, the year that Gidget was first published?
Gidget is a great book (see my niece Tracey Satterthwaite's review); the sequels are entertaining, but that's about it.
No Kooks Allowed.......2004-05-10
Mother Ocean is the Trust of All.
One must be in the Emerald Cathedral.
And... Mickey Dora... DA CAT RULES!
Fun, Fun, Fun.......2003-01-31
It's true this is not a work of a profound and philosophical nature. On the other hand, it is a fun and quick read. The fact that it is at least loosely based on the life of Kathy Kohner and that it was written by her father, who picked up some ideas for the book by eavesdropping on her telephone conversations, only adds to the enjoyment. The beach culture/counterculture presented in this book ushered in not only the Gidget movies but also all of the beach-oriented movies from the early and mid-60s. It's easy enough for anyone who recalls being a teenager to identify with at least some of the teenage angst contained within Gidget. If you're looking for a light, sunny read on a dark winter's day or at any other time, give it a chance.
Book Description
Beach Houses are the first survey of the glamorous beachfront lifestyle and distinctive architecture and design for which Southern California is so famous. The houses featured in this book are located on the coast between Malibu and Laguna and range from common generic types-- New England, Mediterranean and ranch designs-- to high-style homes by well-known architects such as John Lautner, Richard Meier, Frank Gehry, and others.
Beaches and beach houses have played an important part in the historical and cultural development of Southern California, beginning in the 1880s when land speculators wanted to attract home-buyers, and especially during the 1920s when the motion picture community and other nouveau riche built lavish houses and clubs on the shore.
Architectural writer Elizabeth McMillian has selected a stunning array of Southern California beach residences that receive high marks for appearance, comfort, and sensitivity to the environment. Every beach house designer faces similar constraints and challenges: small lots, low-key street facades, enclosed sidewalls, narrow paths to the ocean, and glass-walled and terraced oceanfronts. If a beach house is designed with sensitivity, living on the beach can be an experience that is close to perfection.
Photographer Melba Levick has dramatically captured the California beach house in its enviable seaside context and has focused on interiors that bring the sights and sounds of the ocean into the home by way of glass walls, open courtyards, terraces, and towers.
Interviews with the architects, interior designers, and owners of these fabulous California houses reveal the inspirational dimension embodied in this special architecture.
"A beach house is often the fulfillment of a dream, as well as a quest for the sensual varieties of site, sound, and touch-- the opportunity to feel gentle sea breezes, warm to the reassuring rays of the sun, and hear the lulling, rhythmic sound of wind and waves," explains McMillian.

good repair manual.......2007-08-14
This book is a typical Haynes manual. If you do repair on your own vehicles, then you have probably used one at some point in time. They do a great job of covering 99% of the repair jobs you might encounter. There is also a part that covers troubleshooting of problems and a small section that explains a little bit about the options. After market products, of course, aren't covered in these nor is this a book for the total novice. It does assume some knowledge about the way a car works and an understanding of basic mechanical procedures. But definitely a must for anyone that wants to do any kind of work on a vehicle on your own. These books are a bargain for the information that they have in them.
Excellent book, provided that you know how to use it........2007-05-25
I've always been an avid user of the Haynes and Chilton's manuals; I purchased this one at Amazon because none of my local parts stores carried the manual for my car (a 2003 Chevy Malibu).
If you're familiar with the Haynes/Chilton's books, then you will not be disappointed. The terminology is advanced, so if you know nothing about cars and are hoping for a basic-language, easy-read instruction manual, this won't help. However, if you're familiar with cars (which I would hope you are, if you're attempting to repair one yourself), this book is exactly what you need to get the job done.

I rec'd this item very fast. It will help me maintain my car on my own. Thanks for the speedy service.
Book Description
Twin sisters Kerry and Terry McAfee are well on their way to becoming Los Angeles’s most notorious PIs. With their bright red hair, canine sidekicks, and preferred mode of transportation--a hot-pink Harley--the girls are quickly getting a reputation for more than just sleuthing skills. So after nabbing the Butcher of Beverly Hills, they decide to take some time off and lay low for a while.
But then the girls’ rich Aunt Reba calls with the news that she’s found a decapitated body in her new Malibu beach house. Kerry insists that they call the police—partly because she hopes to catch a glimpse of her former flame, the hunky Detective John Boatwright. But no sooner do the cops begin investigating than Reba and the girls are shocked by the arrival of their Cousin Robert—carrying a blond-haired head in a mesh bag with no memory of where he’s been.
Now it’s up to the twins to find the real killer, as Reba and Robert face the prospect of life behind bars. As they search for clues, Kerry and Terry find themselves dealing with Mafia movie producers, wacko cultists, has-been actresses, and even visitors from outer space. With a razor-sharp wit that brilliantly brings to life L.A.’s most eccentric personalities, The Mangler of Malibu Canyon is fast-paced, sexy, and more fun than a ride down the Pacific Coast Highway.
Customer Reviews:
Fun, fun fun!.......2007-07-25
After enjoying The Butcher of Beverly Hills so much, I couldn't wait to read this book. I hoped Colt wouldn't lose her touch, and she doesn't disappoint. She's a clever plotter and a pro at creating realistic dialogue and quirky characters. The fun starts immediately and never lets up, keeping you guessing the whole time. I look forward to The Vampire of Venice Beach, and hope that Colt has more Kerry and Terry adventures in store for her readers. Fans of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series will find plenty to like here, but Colt has created an original series that can stand on its own merits. Skeptics might also enjoy the plot's zings at certain well-funded alien-centric Hollywood religions...
Double The Fun And Murder.......2007-03-13
Double the fun! Twin sisters Kerry and Terry McAfee are PIs in Los Angeles. You can't miss them with their bright red hair and hot-pink Harley. They are a hoot!
Their rich aunt Reba finds a decapitated body in her new Malibu beach house. Detective John Boatright, the hunky detective Kerry is interested in, arrives to investigate. Then in walks their cousin Robert with a blonde-haired head in a mesh bag. He has no idea where he's been. Soon both Robert and Reba are confessing to the murder and end up in jail.
Terry and Kerry know they have to find the murderer to clear their cousin and aunt. In the process, they end up involved with Malibu movie producers, actors, cultists, and visitors from outer space. Can they sort through all the possible suspects and find the killer without putting themselves in danger and before Robert and Reba are convicted?
This series is fabulous. I just discovered it and can't wait to read the next book, The Vampire Of Venice Beach. There's also the first in the series, The Butcher Of Beverly Hills. I hope these girls will be around a long time. The writer has such great wit. I ended up laughing out loud many times from their antics. Kerry and Terry are quite different and that's what makes this work so well.
I highly recommend this book and series.
5 stars and Two thumbs up for Terry & Kerry a la Mangler........2007-01-23
I absolutely LOVED round two with the twins. The plot was creative... surprising, compelling-- and just beyond my radar. The characters all grow but still have the same great dynamic. I was kept guessing, and laughing all the way through. I thought I had it-- then, No. But it always twisted better than I could have guessed. The dialogue is fast paced, clever and kind of liberating. The girls ride around on a pink Harley and get things done. I found myself smiling outloud (if one can do that) many times throughout. ;-)
The McAfee twins are at it again!.......2006-08-12
Mystery is not generally my genre of choice - I tend to stick to plain old chick lit or historical fiction - yet the McAfee twins somehow manage to tear me away from my usual "fluff" novels. I immensely enjoyed the first novel in this new series, and loved this second book even more, as I think the author's writing has improved since writing her first book. Colt has once again displayed her talent for creating an intelligent and complex plot about mysterious murders, and yet giving us a funny, and light-hearted novel that is as entertaining as it is perplexing. I whole-heartedly recommend "The Mangler of Malibu Canyon", as well as the previous novel, "The Butcher of Beverly Hills", and I look forward to many more great novels from Jennifer Colt!
The Author Rocks Too!.......2006-07-28
I picked up the first book The Butcher of Bev. Hills and LOVED it! I could not wait for the second one and I was not disappointed in the least! If you love Janet Evanovich then you will love Jennifer Colt! I also emailed the author to let her know how much I was enjoying Mangler and she wrote back to say thanks! Not too many do that and that ranks high in my (pardon the pun) book! LOL Can't wait for the Vampire of Venice Beach!

Great coffee table book.......2007-08-26
Not only will you enjoy using this book for reference, but it is a lovely book you and guests will want to look through over and over.
Interesting.......2007-03-28
The book combines the strikingly beautiful world of pottery with the history of the early days of the Malibu area. The rise and fall of the family pottery business was a sign of the times as the country fought through the depression. The color pictures are wonderful and the family black and white bring life to that era. This is a very entertaining coffee table or study book.
Wonderful on many levels.......2003-01-31
A fabulous book for artists, history buffs, and others. Beautifully tells and illustrates the brief but engaging history of the Malibu Potteries. Along with full color examples of the designs, finished tiles and installations, the book takes the reader back to the time and place through personal stories and archival photographs. Each time I pick up this book it inspires me. Highly recommended!
Beautiful.......1999-11-11
A wonderful book of color pictures of the tiles made at the Malibu Potteries. The book provides a history of the pottery, bios of many of the employees and fabulous pictures of malibu tile installtions.
I love the colorful tile designs, but there are also Aztecian terra cotta designs that are inspirational as well. It's all here.
Highly recommended for tile makers and historians.
Fantastic background on a beautiful art........1998-12-29
This book is a must have reference for all potters, interior designers, tile makers and setters, graphic artists and color lovers. Malibu Potteries is a group of people that never should have passed on by. This book covers it all with beautiful pictures of the some of their work, along with the information on how it came together. I wish....to go back in time and somehow stop the fire!
