I was very happy with this book. I loved it and so did my class. I plan to use it for many years to come.

This book is about a girl who saves a caterpillar
from a hungry blue jay. The girl keeps the caterpilar until it is a butterfly. My favorite part is when they make the caterpillar's little house. I LOVE the illustrations.I'd recommend this book to people who like butterflies.

5 out of 5 stars A very warm celebration........1999-10-04

I saw a copy of BUTTERFLY HOUSE and bought it right away because I was attracted to the love and warmth that the book radiates through its story and illustrations on one of my favorite subjects, the butterfly. Butterfly lovers can look for MALINDA MARTHA MEETS MARIPOSA too, different in that it features the Monarch rather than the Painted Lady and different again in that it offers the dimension of acting out the life-cycle as a play. Similar is the love for the butterfly that the children will experience in each book. One doesn't seem complete without the other. Together a child will build a life-time of love and knowledge on this subject.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful story of a girl her grandfather and butterflies........1999-05-02

This was a delightful book written by Eve Bunting highlighting her wonderful style of writing. This book caught my eye at first by the beautiful cover but then I was spell bound by the wonderful illustrations and the delightful story. I was also attracted to this book because of the butterflies. I am a teacher and my first grade class just raised painted lady butterflies, just like in the book. It was a wonderful book to share with my students, especially on the day we released our own butterflies. The book helped explain that it was okay to cry but to be happy at their new found freedom. I would recommend this book to anyone at any age.

Good book for younger generation. Arrived on time, and in good condition. Thanks!

5 out of 5 stars Finally - the butterfly book I've been looking for!.......2007-05-25

My youngest is an avid lepidopterist, but all the guidebooks I had found before this only showed one part of the life cycle (caterpillars or butterflies/moths). This one's got the breeding range, pictures of the eggs, larva, pupa and adult and descriptions of their nectar and host plants. The adults have full color photos enlarged to show detail, along with a measure below the photo showing actual size. Tons of instructions for creating outdoor and indoor habitats and even raising your own. Just an excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Good information source.......2007-03-19

This book is exactly what I was looking for. The author gives plenty of details about everything from simply enjoying butterflies, to raising them, to raising them as a business. Whatever your level of interest, you'll likely find something helpful here.

5 out of 5 stars A. D. Tarbox, Freelance Reviewer for Midwest Book Review.......2005-12-12

THE FAMILY BUTTERFLY BOOK is very informative and the illustrations are vivid. Butterfly expert Rick Mikula does a fantastic job of explaining in his book how to attract, identify and raise butterflies. I found his book very helpful when I was raising butterflies for an elementary school project. I even contacted him and he came to my children's school as an author visit. His credentials are amazing. He has been in People magazine, on Animal Planet, designed gardens for Hershey Gardens, Dollywood and he is the author of several other books on butterflies. He owns Hole-in-Hand Butterfly Farm in Pennsylvania and raises butterflies for special events like weddings.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Raising Butterflies.......2005-09-09

After seeing a friend's book, I ordered my own copy right away. This book contains both good information and beautiful photos and drawings.

What I like most about The Family Butterfly Book is that it not only shows you what the butterflies look like but, unlike most butterfly books, it also shows pictures of the egg, caterpillar, and chrysalis of about 40 of the more common butterflies of North America. It also lists which plants the various caterpillars eat so you know where to look for them and what to feed them if you want to raise your own.

The book was not written as an comprehenive guide to butterfly identification. Its purpose is to teach you how to raise some of the butterflies you are more likely to find close to home.

This book is great for all ages.

Book Description

In this moving narrative poem, Bob Carlisle and his daughter Brooke recapture the emotions so eloquently expressed in Bob's hit song which reached the top of the pop, country, Christian, and adult contemporary song music charts. Told in conversational verse between father and daughter, Butterfly Kisses celebrates the shared love, trust, and hope that create a unique bond between father and daughter. This Little Golden Book is a must-have for every daughter's bookshelf.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars I guess I was the only one.......2006-03-31

I don't listen to country or cristian, so maybe in song form it is better, but I found the story as well as the illustrations to be rather creepy. Daddy is the king and Daugher is the QUEEN? eeeewwwwwww. I know it had to rhyme and whatnot, but this whole poem/song/story is icky to me. there is a line in it about loving you no matter how much you squirm or something equally blech. even where it isn't sort of inappropriate, it is sickningly shmaltzy and when my child takes this golden book from the bookcase, i have to hold back the bile, while trying to make up new words for the charachters to say. and the illustrations are nasty. the people look like marionettes, there isn't much about this book I can recommend. I keep meaning to chuck it.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming!.......2005-06-15

My dy wanted this book to read to our dd as she grows up. I read it and decided to order another copy to give to my dad for Fathers Day. It reflects beautifully the loving relationship that is unique to a Daddy and his little girl.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and gentle story to share with your child.......2004-04-11

Golden Books were popular in the seventies, then somehow faded away with the popularity of the large, glossy and super colorful books of today. This little Golden Book takes you back to that special time when cuddling up next to Mom and Dad for a story was the highlight of the day. This beautiful story is from a father telling his little daughter how very much he is blessed to have her, just how much he loves her and how someday, though she will grow up and wear a wedding dress and leave him, he will always have her in his heart. Any young child will love this book, the soft illustrations and meaningful verses. Share this with your special little someone, it will become a treasured favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Daddies Girl.......2003-05-17

This book is amazing!! I give it 5 stars up. It touched me soo much. I mean we as kids never realize how fast our lives go by. We think it takes a thousand years but to our parents it goes by so fast, i mean one day were a baby coming home from the hospital and the next were getting married and leaving the house. Its about a fathers story of his daughters life and how he sees it. It starts off when she comes home from the hospital and ends at her wedding. This book was inspired by a song by Bob Carlise and even though im only 14 i have already picked it to be my father-daughter dnace song at my wedding! I think everyone should read it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Touched my heart.......2002-05-23

Four years ago we purchased this book as a gift for our friends when they had their second baby girl. As I read a few of the stories in the bookstore I had to swallow deep to hold back tears. I was touched by the thoughtfullness of the stories, relationships and memories. Now as my husband will be celebrating his first Father's Day as a loving father of our new baby girl I couldn't think of anything more special to give him than this book. I am so pleased I found it.

I make this wish on wings of love
And send into the sky above
That Mother holds me every day
And never, ever goes away.

Young Ella never forgets the wish she made upon the wings of a butterfly, even as the years pass by. Ella's mother also makes a butterfly wish, full of strength and love. With Irena Roman's timeless watercolor illustrations, Kathy-jo Wargin's touching story shows that the bond between mother and daughter is as unbreakable as it is tender.

5 out of 5 stars There is no stronger bond........2006-05-16

What a beautiful story... both the text and the wonderful illustrations. A perfect depiction of a child's need to hold on and a mother's need to give her child wings. I gave this book to my daughter and her 6 year daughter for Mother's Day.
My grandaughter loved the pictures, especially the butterflies.
My daughter was brought to tears by the challenge she knows she will face some day. I bought a spare...I know I will find a perfect home for it.

5 out of 5 stars The warmth of the illustrations make this book magical.......2006-05-14

What a wonderful book, with such an important message of the bond between mother and daugher. Irena Roman's sweet illustrations will melt your heart, while the story gently reminds readers that love truly is forever. If you're a mom of a young child, spend a few minutes connecting with A Mother's Wish.

5 out of 5 stars A Mother's Wish.......2006-05-14

Sweet story. The illustrations carry this book through a generation with life and light. These watercolors are soft, yet intense, and convey the strong bond between mother and daughter. Because of these beautiful paintings, this story takes on a life and attitude of its own. Kudos to the author and illustrator. I would love to see Ms. Roman's work in person. She has amazing talent and the ability to take us to special places. You should buy this book for your daughter, and yourself. It can take you to a special place, with memories and love.

Book Description

This 180-page journal, beautifully illustrates the miracle of pregnancy with grace and charm. Each month contains thought-provoking questions that prompts the new mother-to-be (and father!) to capture the most important moments of pregnancy. There is plenty of room to record practitioner visits, baby's development, the physical changes and symptoms, special circumstances during pregnancy and room for pictures, if desired!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Love this journal.......2007-06-12

This journal asks the questions you'd love to see your responses to when your children are much older. I really like this journal. Someone gave me one when I had my first child. And I ended up buying one for my second pregnancy. If you enjoy guided journals (where they ask tons of questions throughout the entire 9 months), you'll be pleased with this one.

5 out of 5 stars Great Monthly Pregnancy Journal.......2006-02-25

I wanted a "pregnancy" journal to document key events during my pregnancy and found exactly what I was looking for in Butterflies & Hiccups. Initially, I considered a "daily" journal but in reviewing some of the pregnancy journals online, I was impressed with Butterflies & Hiccups. It is a "monthly" journal, which really turned out to be perfect... daily would have been overkill, especially since there are many days that pass where there's really nothing to document. This journal has excellent preprinted questions as well a blank page for each month for documenting additional information, perhaps not covered by the preprinted questions. Each month, the journal covers topics such as changes/symptoms, doctor visits, and has a page for placing a photo to track pregnancy progress (and more). It goes up to nine months then continues on to the "Birth" with a checklist of what to pack in the hospital bag, preprinted birth questions, a photo page for picture with baby, a page for baby info (name, date/time of birth, height/length, etc). It also contains a section to document the Baby Shower. The journal contains a 'Baby Keepsake' pocket, perfect for holding ultrasound pictures. There's also an attached ribbon bookmarker so that you can go straight to the page where you left without having to flip through the journal... and it's spiral bound. Highly recommended PREGNANCY journal... this is NOT a BABY journal.

4 out of 5 stars A memorable journal that I will always treasure!!!.......2005-11-02

I was very happy when I finally received my journal. I used it during the full nine months of my pregnancy and it even has a section for after you give birth. This is just so that you can always look back and remember how you felt during every stage of your pregnancy. It does take time to fill out because it is so detailed but that is exactly what I like about it, the details that sometimes we take for granted.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference for future pregnancies!.......2005-10-17

The journal was great at asking questions about things to comment on that I would have forgotten to include in just a plan journal. This will be a great resource to have when the next pregnancy comes along.

5 out of 5 stars Focused Journaling.......2005-05-21

It was such a neat gift to receive Butterflies and Hiccups. I am not one to journal, but with 2 boys and number 3 on the way, it will be helpful to put some of my thoughts down on paper so I will always have the memory. I highly recommend this journal to all pregnant mothers!

Book Description

Sarah is a flower girl in Aunt Robin's wedding! She gets to wear a swirly, twirly dress and carry a basketful of flowers. How exciting!

And scary.
What if she trips?
What if she drops her basket?
What if she throws the flowers all wrong?
Everyone will be watching.

Sarah doesn't want to let Aunt Robin down, but she gets butterflies in her tummy just thinking about it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a First Time Flower Girl.......2006-06-26

My little one was put at ease about the huge responsibility of being a flower girl after several readings of this book.
She knew just what to expect and how to handle "Flower Girl Butterflies".

4 out of 5 stars wedding time.......2005-02-09

There is going to be a wedding and the little girl who is the main character in the story has been asked to be the flower girl! She is really excited. She gets to dress up in a pretty dress and walk down the aisle in front of her aunt. It's a very important job. She starts to think that it might be to hard. She thinks she might not to a good enough good. She gets scared. She talks with her family about it and they make her feel much better.
The little girl shared her feelings with her aunt about being scared. This shows kids that when you have scared feelings it's ok to talk with a grown up about them.
I would recommend this book families who are getiing ready to have weddings. The book will be a great way to bring up discussions on lots of wedding matters like mammers and feelings about weddings.

3 out of 5 stars The Big Day.......2004-10-10

FLOWER GIRL BUTTERFLIES tells all about Sarah's preparations to be a flower girl in her Aunt Robin's wedding. She picks out her dress, prepares for visiting family, and attends the wedding rehearsal. Throughout all of these experiences she shares her feelings, at times she is excited and at others she is very nervous. When the big day arrives will she be ready?

Little girls in particular are sure to enjoy this book. The illustrations for the story are absolutely beautiful and really complement the story well. I also enjoyed the fact that Sarah shared her feelings; she described what she was feeling and then labeled it. This modeling is an excellent way for young readers to learn to identify and label their own feelings. However, there was no build up in anticipation of the big wedding day and as a result, the story lacks excitement and read more like a "to do" list for flower girls at times.

Shortly before her death, a little Mexican's girl's grandmother (who is also her best friend) takes her to the Magic Circle of oyamel fir trees to say goodbye to the monarch butterflies as they prepare for their migration north. Even after a butterfly that has landed on the girl's arm flies away, her arm still tickles. "That's because they carry the souls of the old ones, and the old ones never really leave," Grandmother says. After Grandmother dies, all the sad little girl can think about is that her arm doesn't feel the tickle anymore, and her grandmother's scent of cornmeal and roses is fading as well. It's not until the season for the Days of the Dead, the time to remember the old ones, that the girl discovers the truth of her beloved grandmother's words.

Giselle Potter, illustrator of Kate and the Beanstalk and other intriguing picture books, applies her unique, naive artistic style in muted earth tones to Barbara M. Joosse's narrative: the oval-faced grandmother and granddaughter work tortilla dough together, hold hands under the butterfly-covered trees, and keep the imaginary nighttime monsters at bay. Joosse's poetic tale celebrates the magic of remembrance in a way that will speak to every child who has loved--and lost--someone special. Details about the legendary 2,000-mile migration of monarch butterflies and about the Mexican Days of the Dead add an exotic twist to this delicate, touching story. Joosse is the author of many wonderful books for children, including the award-winning Mama, Do You Love Me?. (Ages 5 to 8) --Emilie Coulter

Book Description

Set in Mexico amidst the monarch butterflies' annual migration and during the Days of the Dead, Ghost Wings, written by Barbara M. Joosse, author of the best-selling Mama, Do You Love Me?, and illustrated with the luminescent artwork of Giselle Potter, is the touching story of a little girl whose very best friend is her grandmother. But one spring, Grandmother becomes thin as smoke. When she dies, Papa says, "When you love someone they never really leave." But to the little girl, Grandmother seems impossibly far away. Who will sing to her? Who will chase the monsters from under her bed? Then, during the Days of the Dead, something extraordinary happens that brings Papa's words vividly to life. Ideal for one-on-one sharing as well as a group discussion, Ghost Wings' poignant message of the endurance of love and the power of memory is sure to linger long after the book is closed. A discussion guide is included.

5 out of 5 stars Remembering Grandmother.......2004-05-21

I stumbled upon Ghost Wings at the public library a week after the death of my mother-in-law. I was trying to find a book that would help my four-year-old deal with the loss. Ghost Wings is an amazing book. Its illustrations are gorgeous, but it is the story that captures the essence of a child's confusion and pain. It also deals with the acceptance stage of the grieving process. Although we aren't there yet, this magical story has made it possible for my daughter to understand that her grandma will never truly be gone, that "the old ones" are never far away. Every time we see a butterfly, monarch or otherwise, we are reminded of the spirits of those we have lost.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful story and illustrations.......2001-11-26

This book takes the reader into the beautiful world of Mexican culture through a sweet story and amazing illustrations. I read Ghost Wings to a first grade art class and they really enjoyed learning about Los Dias de los Muertos and how the little girl in the story participated in the festivities. The full page illustrations perfectly bring the poetic story to life. At the end of the book there are some interesting projects and ideas that can be done with children. There is also a helpful explaination section, full of details about the Day of the Dead holiday and Mexican culture. I think every children's library should have a copy of this book.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Book for a father to give his "Baby Girl"!.......2002-07-12

I found this book when my daughter was 2 years old. I have been writing in it since. She is now 5 years old going on 16, and I know that the time will fly by. I plan on giving this completed book of her life through my eyes to my daughter on her wedding day. Every Father with a little baby girl, whatever her age, should get this book and share his thoughts with her.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2002-02-07

It seems cheesy but it really did provide a way for my dad and I to share a lot of our thoughts and feelings. I'll treasure it always.

5 out of 5 stars It took my dad and I to a whole new level of closeness........1999-09-16

My dad and I live apart. We haven't seen each other in 2 years. I bought this book for him on his birthday and it brought us closer together than we have ever been. There are just so many things that go unsaid and this book was the perfect way for us each to express them. Often times it is easier to write your feelings down opposed to saying them, this book has all the right topics to get those feelings out. Knowing exactly how we feel about each other is almost magical, I only wish I had found this book sooner. I absoluely loved it, actually, we both did.

5 out of 5 stars A very special way of sharing hard to express feelings........1998-12-09

This book was given to me by my father for my birthday. It made me cry. He turned 50 Thanksgiving day, and I returned it to him, sharing my feelings. It made him cry, and he never cries! So many things you need to hear, so many things you always wondered, and a way to say, "You are a great person!" A very special book!
