Landscapes in Relief: Carving Techniques and Patterns
Lora S. Irish Manufacturer: Fox Chapel Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1565231279 |
Book Description
Country landscape scenes featuring barns, churches, rustic mills, and mountain valleys are especially attractive when executed in the relief style of woodcarving. This guide features 32 patterns and step-by-step instructions for carving them. How to map out levels in a pattern, trace pattern levels onto the blank, work roughed-out levels, and carve texture for foliage and buildings are explained with accompanying illustrations to clarify each technique. Also included are ways to create three-dimensional foreground elements and dry brush finished carvings with oil paints.Customer Reviews:

What you see is not quite what you get.......2003-08-17
Now, in her defense, Lora Irish does cover the basics of relief carving, however, I found it to be too general for a beginner. Also, I often found myself tripping over slight contradictions between what the author instructs you to do and what she actually does. This is especially a problem if you use the picture on the back cover for reference, which is a slightly different version of this project. Carvers more familiar with the process might not have a problem here, but for a beginner who hangs on every detail of the example, like myself, he or she might become frustrated.
Lastly, I would have preferred that the entire lesson's scene been included in the process (the waterwheel, water, and reflection elements are left out) so as to have an opportunity to get familiar with creating the water's illusion of depth and the use of reflections. The good news is, the picture on the back cover is the full scene, you'll just have to figure out how to do the waterwheel yourself.
In conclusion, if you have a bit of carving experience and are looking for a refresher course or beautifully illustrated patterns this book is worth looking into; if you are looking for a beginner's guide to relief carving, you might want to look elsewhere.

A Bridge to Landscape Quilts
Mary L. Hackett Manufacturer: American Quilter's Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1574328565 |
Book Description
You are invited on a journey into making landscape quilts and providing a bridge from traditional quiltmaking to scenic interpretation. The author leads you through a series of simple exercises designed to help you really see what you are looking at, to decide which images you favor, and to interpret them in fabric. Various simple quiltmaking techniques are combined in a building-block manner to make a fabric picture. Traditionally pieced blocks, whether sewn by hand or machine, are used to create large areas of a landscape. Sky, water, and land masses are made of these pieced sections, and the wonderful geometric shapes lend a subtle texture. She then shows how to add appliqu shapes and details to the background. In Your First Project, a very simple composition of trees, she takes you step by step through the process, then shows you how to add the 'Wow Factors,' those components that fool the eye into accepting illusion. 80 pages + large pull-out pattern section. AUTHORBIO: Mary's work hangs in private and public collections around the United States and Japan, and she has received recognition locally and nationally. Her quilts have been exhibited in numerous quilt shows and art shows from coast to coast, and she has pieces in the permanent collections of the White House and the Museum of the American Quilter's Society. Mary writes articles on technique, inspiration, and other professional topics, but her favorite creative activity is making quilted landscapes.Customer Reviews:

great wearable art ideas.......2001-07-29
I ran out today and purchased fabrics to make a woodland scene and can't wait to get started. I also happen to be lucky enough to have a top of the line sewing and embroidery machine, so I can use it to further embellish my landscape quilt. But to be honest, with all the great ideas, techniques, thread and fabric suggestions the author has given, you do not need one of these fancy machines to make a work of art. This is a neat, neat book!

Impressive & inspirational quilts, beautiful.......2000-05-03
First the basic method is demonstrated in detail including many illustrations. The main technique used to make the quilts is string piecing. Six beautiful projects follow. Patterns for each are found in the back.
The book places a lot of emphasis on embellishment. Textured yarns, metallic threads, and fusible web as well as organzas & tuttle overlays help to decorate the quilts. Fabric painting and pieced applique are also used.
As both a paper crafter and a quilter I also found this book a great inspiration for making collages. The tips on color & selecting a scene were very helpful. The large gallery in the middle is worth the price of the book alone.

A Fresh New Look at Quilting.......2000-03-24
On the other hand, the text makes great reading. The author is more into the artistic side of quilting, which allows for less technical perfection. I like that.
Using pre-sewn strips of fabric cut into pieces which are then pieced together, very interesting skies and scenery are created. The method is efficient and neat. Fabric weaving is another of many facets of this interesting book.
This book contains many different techniques on adding details to your quilts from frayed rough fabric (grasses and bushes) to chopped up fabric pieces held into place with tulle.
Detailed instructions are included with many Artist's Tips. I found these especially helpful.
The illustrations are very clear and helpful and the overall tone of the book is encouraging and inspirational. I feel as if the author is indeed with me as a teacher in a personal class.
I fell in love with this book when I saw it and although I was overwhelmed with the pictures at first, after reading it, I am anxious to start creating my fabric world as soon as I can.
If you are looking for something a little different than usual quilting books that allows for great creativity to express yourself, this book is for you!

Landscape Ecology in Theory and Practice: Pattern and Process
Monica Turner , R. H. Gardner , and R. V. O'Neill Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
Accessories:
ASIN: 0387951237 |
Book Description
This is a new text aimed expressly at the student taking a course in landscape ecology, written by very well-known practitioners and pioneers in this new field of ecological analysis. Landscape ecology has emerged during the past two decades as a new and exciting level of ecological study. Environmental problems such as global climate change, land use change, habitat fragmentation and loss of biodiversity have required ecologists to expand their traditional spatial and temporal scales and the widespread availability of remote imagery, geographic information systems, and desk top computing has permitted the development of spatially explicit analyses. In this new text book this new field of landscape ecology is given the first fully integrated treatment suitable for the student. Throughout, the theoretical developments, modeling approaches and results, and empirical data are merged together, so as not to introduce barriers to the synthesis of the various approaches that constitute an effective ecological synthesis. The book also emphasizes selected topic areas in which landscape ecology has made the most contributions to our understanding of ecological processes, as well as identifying areas where its contributions have been limited. Each chapter features questions for discussion as well as recommended reading.Customer Reviews:
